When will Pakistan cricket finally move on from Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez?

These guys have been around for donkey yrs and don't seem to go away. With the emergence of the likes of Mohammad Nawaz , who looks like a fine all-round cricketer..have we finally found a replacement?
 
Hafeez is good, scores consistently. Played well in the ODIs against NZ and England.

Malik won't be going away anytime soon, after all, he made big runs against mighty Zimbabwe.
 
Hafeez? He's our best ODI bat since more than an year. Has scored against quality bowling as well and our best bat in NZ.

Malik is another story. Same old issues against any top 8 side, learnt nothing except Social Media in 17 years of cricket.

Can't score if the opposition is not Zimbabwe and struggles against any good pace bowler. But the sad thing is Haroon loves him and he isn't going anywhere until he loses us another tournie.
 
Hafeez is amongst the top all rounders in LO Cricket. Soon he will be back bowling and will add balance to the side.

Shohaib just scored 200 against a team that outplayed the no1 ranked team. He is a useful off spinning all rounder

Yes they are both technically deficient in some areas but the sad fact about their apparent lack of improvement is that the game of cricket itself has changed remarkably since their debut 12-15 years ago. Hafeez and Shohaib have remained who they are but with ballooning strike rates and innovations in LO cricket it is pak cricket as a whole that needs to catch up.
 
What is wrong in Hafeez and Malik they are doing their job as good as anyone.

I dont understand how the hell Shoaib Malik managtes to get into
the national team even though he is rubbish. He bashed Zimbabwe
on home pitches and some people praise him like he's the next Bradman.
 
Now what they have done...Malik is a good T20 player and yes he should only play in this format. Its Azhar ali yaarian brought him back in ODI. Sooner malik is kicked out the better it is so more deserving ppl can get a chance.

What a lovely , classy , stylish , eyecatchy innings hafeez played in the 3rd odi against NZ. A treat to watch. Scintillating shots with zero slog. Babar refused him a clear single he got angry and lost focus. Next ball swept and gone of 79 (61). Babar also played a superb knock. The best odi partnership of last 5 years between hafeez and Babar Azam.

Malik after ages justified his comeback by being top odi run getter of the year.


If you are bored of them don't see them. See some other sports or cricket match. It's all about performance.

Hafeez is no yousuf , Saeed Anwar or Inzimam in terms of performances or consistency. Yet who has scored most odi runs in last 5 years for Pakistan? Who has scored most odi centuries for Pakistan in last 5 years ? Did hafeez tie the hands of other openers or number 4,5,6 & 7 of Pakistan team ?

Hafeez and malik are in pakistan team on merit.

Please don't quote the single odi malik played in new Zealand after coming back from injury. Neither the minnows mantra. Just talk about last year's odi performances of Malik and last 5 years odi performances of Hafeez.

Also identify batsman with better technique , temperament, short range etc in pakistan domestic cricket who should replace hafeez & Malik since you don't like them personally.
 
well, they're the 2 best batsmen in the ODI team and 2 of top 3 batsmen in T20I team

so not sure what you want to move on to...

as for Nawaz, he's competing with Imad Wasim (and guys like Fakhar Zaman) for the all-rounder spot
 
Malik is a liability against good attacks. Should just play minnows in Asia.

Hafeez is handy player at the top of the order. Has been proficient since bowling ban

But yeah, Nawaz is the future, need to nurture him for future. Hope he plays Wt20 to start of
 
Wow what a hate against Malik and Hafeez.
What would you say, Waqar is the only coach who give chances to the most youngsters yet he himself is blamed for the failure of Pakistan.
Sharjeel, Mukhtar, Imad etc they are all failed to perform and our so called talented Ahmed Shahzad and Umar Akmal consistently getting selected either due to the social media pressure or some inside contacts.
If Sohaib is the minnow basher why everyone else can't do the same.
Few months back I may drop Hafeez but not now, since his ban he has improved alot in his batting .

Pakistan cricket is cursed with the epitome of mediocrity in the form these two players, don't know when will they get rid of these viruses, Hafeez more than Shoaib.
 
Hafeez averages 50 odd since the bowling ban, he deserve to selected on merit.
 
Players like Azhar Ali, Ahmed Shehzad, and Shoaib Maqsood need to be discarded first. All three are liability in the side.
 
hope Psl will open the selectors eyes and they can see there is talent in Pakistan and they can finally have the guts to drop Shahzad, Hafeez, Maqsood, Gul, Anwar Ali and Azhar Ali. And selector players like M. Nawaz, Ashgar, Kamran Ghulam, Zia-ul-haq, Nauman Anwar, Hammad Azam, Sadaf Hussain and Usama Mir.
 
Drop the likes of Azhar Ali and Sohaib Maqsood first. If you drop Hafeez, and to an extent, Malik, you've lost the core around which the current odi and t20 batting line ups function.
 
Show me all the stats you want about hafeez batting since his ban but fact is he is a mediocre batsmen. He never and you will see it again in the world T20 delivers on the big stage. We have had many timid batsmen lately but this guy is the leader. He starts sweating before a ball is bowled.

Malik well he is even worse and people saying he has good pr skills dont know pr skills are. He makes a fool of himself. He cant even properly express him self and repeats same lines every other day.

The day hafeez, malik, afridi etc leave pak cricket we can finally get a move on.

I can tolerate Malik to some extent since he has the class of quitting when he realizes his worth in the team and one should applaud him for his selfless attitude for the greater good of Pakistan team, he could well have carried on in Tests post his contribution with bat in first Test and with ball throughout the series but instead decided to hang up his boots after the series concluded which reflects his decency and humble nature, but you can't expect the same from Hafeez.
 
Let your domestic first produce a couple of good batsmen and then we'll talk.

Unfortunately the batsmen in our current domestic system are worse than Hafeez and Malik.

Hafeez is Pakistan's best batsman at the moment across all three formats. Malik has been very good for a year, international performance should take precedence over PSL. He should get a few more series and if his form drops, he should be axed.
 
Hafeez? Average of 40 at a strike rate of 80 over last five years is poor? Not one other Pakistani batsman has batted better than him in ODIs. He should be the first name on the dheet.

Internationally Malik has failed barring 2 performances against Zimbabwe.. his time is up. Should stick to Sialkot stallions and maybe take up a coaching job.. He cannot sustain any sort of pressure and his captaincy is as spineless as his batting against any decent pacer

All of that might be true, but he has earned a few more chances based on his form post-World Cup and he will get it.

Premature thread. Don't know what's with all these knee jerk threads these days with no scope or sense of reality.

Malik is an absolute must to win the world t20. If Rizwan was x factor then Malik is xyz factor
 
This is what you get with these so called experienced seniors. Pathetic.
 
Apart from may be one or two players these are the best players we have got , its just that we are just not good enough to be consider a good team.
 
With Hafeez, when we are playing overseas, he fails and get dropped from 1/2 games, then we are back in the UAE, we need his bowling so he is back in the side.

He really shouldn't even be playing the T20 format, he's pathetic and cant cope with any pressure and is totally useless now as he cant even bowl
 
It is difficult to understand. After all, we have Steve Smiths and Joe Roots itching to get a place in the team.
 
Malik looks a tailender with the form he's in. Not sure how he'll make the team with such returns in future

Wish Afridi had more guts to bench him for someone more promising like Nawaz in the Wt20
 
Good question. These two are wasting two slots of batsmen. We need proper batsmen in place of these two pseudo batsmen. How can you rely on all rounders to steady your upper order? Ridiculous.

Kohli got many difficult balls from quicker bowlers, but point being if you are good enough and have a technique as good as Kohli or Amla let's say, you take facing such difficult bowling as a challenge to test your ability.

It can't be just coincidental that against difficult bowling, in difficult situations, on difficult wickets - Hafeez fails time and time again. As does Shoaib Malik for that matter, but in between they do enough to cement their places and build their fan clubs.

A team being captained by a donosaur who didn't deserve to play more than 50 matches to begin with, and you are questioning two half decents in comparison. Pakistan cricket set up is rotten from top to bottom, and fans have to share part of the blame.

I like your bench mark of Kohli.

If Kohli is the bench mark for selecting pakistan playing eleven for Asia Cup & World T20 than we should recall our squad from these two tournaments.


Hafeez is one of the best batsman we have with international experience. In the last 5 years he has performed better than most batsman we have had.

Yes he has issues outside offstump but we don't have any better player than him to take his place in the squad or playing eleven.

Apart from Babar Azam, Hafeez & Umar Akmal we don't have any single dynamic versatile batsman floating around Pakistan or pakistan A team.

That was a difficult delivery to negotiate and might be kohli would have survived that ball and Hafeez could not.

You almost always refer Fakhar Zaman and Husain Talat.

Hafeez has been poor with bat in T20s for a while now and needs to get the boot in this format and malik hasnt been that great either. Two so called senior players need to step up to plate and start performing for the team more regularly.

Both Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik's names should be written in the list of players which will never be selected again. And that list should be part of constitution of PCB so that no selectors can select them even if they want to.

No I don't rate hussain tallat at all. He has huge technical issues in his batting. I rate Hasan Raza jnr, Saad Ali & Saud Shakeel better than him with Saud being the best.

Fakhar Zaman yes is good. He may not be a dynamic or versatile stroke maker but he is consistent rungetter and his List A Ave of 53 SR of 94 and his T20 Ave of 31.31 SR of 134 are better than Khurram Manzoor. Also his performances against England Lions were better than Khurram Manzoor.

Now you may ask that whether he is better than Sharjeel Khan or not ?

Well Sharjeel Khan is less consistent but more destructive batsman. Whereas Fakhar is more consistent and less destructive than Sharjeel Khan.

But Fakhar is better than Khurram.


Hafeez is also inconsistent but not very inconsistent and when he settles than there aren't many better stroke makers than Hafeez in Pakistan but than against top 5 bowling line ups 80 % of times he struggles.


Lastly none of Saud Shakeel, Saad Ali, Hussain Tallat or Hasan Raza jnr deserve to be in pakistan T20i team neither they are contenders but Fakhar should have been there ahead of Khurram.
 
Morally, ethically, logically - PCB selectors has no grounds to drop Malik, MoHa, Irfan & Sami on the grounds of age, fitness, mistakes by senior/experience players, poor performance or as an excuse of introducing new blood - AS LONG AS THEY PERSIST WITH AFRIDI AS CAPTAIN.

When your Captain is offender of all 5 issues & you are ready to allow him a free ride, how can we point fingers to players, who are not the worst performers of the team?

Hafeez talks about moral stuff etc. If he would have had some self respect he would have retired long time ago.

He cant play big games. Heck this was not even a big game. Just am opening game at the asia cup yet his face looked like he was at a court hearing!

Who will you make captain after Afridi is gone? He makes the team 'fight'? He is brave, aggresive, won the most man of the matches for Pakistan. Any such player who has done that for 20 years? He is the last of a dying breed of cricketers. Who knew how to 'fight'
 
Well you can't blame the selectors they find and bring in some new players they get injured.
People keep complaining about how we have such good talent not playing well where were they in the PSL.
Haris Sohail probably is someone that should have replaced Hafeez or Malik but he got injured another is Babar Azam who I believe is injured. Sharjeel the young newbie didn't do anything nor did UAkmal.
Thing is that we need to improve our first class cricket as these are the best we have and as you can see they are crap.

1. Ahmed Shehzad
2. Hafeez
3. Babar Azam
4. Umar Akmal
5. Nawaz
6. Sarfaraz Ahmed
7. Afridi
8. Wahab Riaz
9. Sami
10. Asghar
11. Amir
 
Surprised you included them but not Afridi. Hafeez has done more than Afridi in international cricket in recent times
 
When Hafeez is the man Pakistan rely on you know desperate the state of cricket is in Pakistan.
This is the worst Pakistan team in my lifetime but I'm not surprised as this would happen to any nation that was starved of the game. Good luck boys

Except Hafeez has delivered more than Afridi in international cricket in recent times. But not a word against Afridi which shows more about the mindset to me
 
Mark my words. These two will come good vs india in wc. Reason being both are good vs spin. If anyone deserves to get dropped, its Afridi. The way he ran today, it displays that he is not fit. And he tried to take on arm of arguably best fielder and keeper in the world today. Pathetic was from him. Hafeez and malik did not throw their wicket away like him.
 
I haven't read all the replies here, but I know that everyone will jump on the bandwagon without actually thinking why selectors are forced to rely on these established names.

It's simple: as the PSL has confirmed, there aren't many quality batsmen around in Pakistan. There are a few but you cannot just put them in for the WC especially when your batting is already in tatters and you do not have the best coaches around.

I am not a fan of Hafeez, but he has been pretty consistent in the last few years even if it was on flat tracks and against B quality bowlers. He got the runs whereas others struggled.

Malik is struggling these days especially on tracks where there is something for the pace bowlers, but he also has done well last year. Not to forget that he gets in because of his bowling as well.

For the moment this is what we have till we get a fully fit Haris and a better T20 Babar.

Shoaib Malik - Whats his role now in Pakistan team?

I really dont understand this person

what he is doing in the team ..... the most shocking to see is this person taking care of our middle order :facepalm:

He failed in PSL ... while other team and players were enjoying he was the only person to create problem in Karachi Kings.

With below average batting performance he is selected for Asia cup and WT20.

Last day he was involve in runout and just after he thrown his wicket...

with Malik and umar akmal in our middle order , we really cant survive good bowling conditions.
 
how dare you point finger on him . he is best cricketing brain in Pakistan .
when he will enjoy playing for Pakistan only then he will perform . no one can force him . it depends on his mood .
 
Can we not drop Hafeez, Malik and Afridi from the WC squad, we are woefully pathetic as it is, might as well give some youngster a chance. Can't do much worse than these three
 
Not much on these type of wicket - it's tough for him to survive simply as a batsman on the wicket IND-PAK match took place & his bowling won't be required either. However, he has a big role to play in WC in IND as a No. 4/5 batsman & back-up spinner. Problem for PAK is, as long as WY is in charge (& Afridi/Azhar) - "Horses for courses" is an alien word.
 
He is really out of form and should be dropped but problem is that his replacements are Imad Wasim who doesnt look in any great form, Mohammad Nawaz who hasnt really shined with the bat either and Ifthikar Ahmed well the less said about him the better.

Iftikhar is a batsman and deserves a chance. He will do well. Imad and Nawaz aren't batsmen. But I will stick with him and drop Hafeez instead.
 
He should be demoted to number 5 while hafeez should be demoted to number 3 where he is most comfortable and Umar Akmal at number 4.

Khurram should open next game since dropping him after one game won't be justified plus he was second highest run getter Hehehe.


Malik's role should be to milk the spinners and medium pacers :-)


If he fails in next game or the 3rd game aswell than bring Nawaz or Imad in the playing eleven.


Hopefully Malik would perform against UAE :-)
 
He's playing a good samaritan !

Dont see him contributing in any other way, body language is down, confidence is zero, he couldnt handle a league like PSL, how's he going to flare at international level?

Just another mentally weak cricketer !

I have not yet seen Iftikhar play one proper cricket shot. Also, it doesnt help that he has already been dropped from the World T20
 
I believe his key job was to ensure Aamir is settled in the team. I am sure he believes he has done that.
Honestly a bit disappointed by him. Was hoping he will carry the confidence of bashing Zimbabwe in to the bigger matches.
