What's new

Where does Stuart Broad rank amongst England's best-ever Test bowlers?

This has been such poor bowling by England it almost seems deliberate.

Broad laughing during his 35 run over doesn’t help either

So not content with conceding 36 runs in white ball cricket, he'll be gutted missed out by just one run in Test cricket. He can try again in the 2nd inns though. :91:

Of course he's a great bowler to have taken 550 Test wickets, but he is not in the conversation with the players around him on that wicket-takers list.

I have always disliked his attitude as well. The only bowler that would be laughing as a tailender smashes him for the most expensive over in Test history.

Bet when he gets dropped soon he will start whining about selection again, as if he even deserves to have played the 156 matches he has. That's literally the 2nd most Tests ever played by a bowler (behind Anderson). As a previous poster said, if he was from any other he would have barely played half of that.

Now has the record for most runs conceded in an over in T20Is and Tests :)

Not as pleasing As yuvraj’s carnage but still valuable runs for ICT.

Extremely overrated bowler his record outside of Eng is pathetic.

With the record of most runs leaked in a T20's he now holds the record of leaking most runs in tests as well. Some bowler 🤣🤣🤣

English Selectors are being mistaken that just because Anderson managed to play for two decades at the age of 40 so can Broad. Broad has been very poor for a while now.

Never compare Broad with Anderson. The latter is clearly superior. Broad should have been dropped for good 4-5 years ago. This should be his last season in an England shirt.

He's been poor only for a year and a bit. However, he looks done to be honest and I dont see him turning it around.

I think he looked tired at Headingley in the second innings. He is too old to play four Test matches in quick succession. J Overton should have played here instead of him.

In fact Broad's last five years with the ball have been better than his previous ten, averaging 27 (25 home, 30 away) instead of 28 overall.

Surely the most undeserving bowler ever to play more than 100 tests. Is worse than mediocre in 75% of the games he played

Legend England fast bowler Stuart Broad added yet another accolade to an already acclaimed international career at Lord's on day two of England's Test against South Africa.

Dismissing Kyle Verreynne with an edge behind to Ben Foakes, Broad became the second player to take 100 Test wickets at the venue, joining long-time sparring partner James Anderson, who was on-field to welcome him in celebration.

Broad with the record becomes the fourth person to take 100 Test wickets at a single venue, entering an exclusive group with his teammate as well as Sri Lankan pair Muttiah Muralitharan and Rangana Herath. Unsurprisingly, Muralitharan has achieved the feat at three venues: Galle, Kandy and the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo.

The feat is just another glowing achievement in the sport for Broad, who is approaching Glenn McGrath’s fifth spot on the all-time Test wicket-taking list.

Broad (553*) is ten scalps away from equalling his Ashes rival, and could well pass him by the end of the current series. In terms of quick bowlers, Anderson (658*) would be the only man separating Broad at the top once overtaking the Australian.

Despite the best efforts of Broad and the bowlers, it was South Africa’s day at Lord’s, storming to a strong first innings lead and building on day one dominance.

The wicket to dismiss Kyle Verreynne meant the tourists sat precariously at 210/6, though the Proteas lower order fought to arrest control of the match once more.

Perhaps in a counter-attacking move like that of their adversaries in recent months, Marco Jansen was promoted in the batting order, hitting four fours and a six in a flurry of 41* (57). At the other end was Keshav Maharaj, who played an aggressive knock of his own with a 49-ball 41.

The Proteas take a lead of 124 runs into day three.

Players to take 100 Test wickets at a single venue

Muttiah Muralitharan - Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo - 166
Muttiah Muralitharan - Asgiriya Stadium, Kandy - 117
James Anderson - Lord’s, London - 117*
Muttiah Muralitharan - Galle International Stadium, Galle - 111
Rangana Herath - Galle International Stadium, Galle - 100
Stuart Broad - Lord’s, London - 100*

Stats correct as of Friday 19 August 2022

He blows cold every 2/3 match he plays. His stats when he hasn't taken a 4 for in an innings is abysmal. Almost certain to go for a lot of runs

Apart from his dreadful tour of India, he has done well over the last 24 months.

He was used badly by Stokes in this test, bowling bang-in stuff when he would have cleaned up had he pitched it up like the Saffers.

Stuart Broad has 42 wickets @ 18.76, strike rate 38, in 18 Test bowling inns at Old Trafford.

Another day out in Manchester for Stuart today.

Most Test wickets:

Muralitharan: 800
Warne: 708
Anderson: 666*
Kumble: 619
Broad: 564*

I remember when he stopped trying to be the "enforcer" and started aiming for the top of off like McGrath.

Now he has passed that great Australian.

A wonderful career with a very high aggregate due to starting early in his cricket life and staying fit.

His finest hour remains the 8-15 against Australia in 2015.

29 wickets this summer at 27 apiece.

Just about sums him up.

He's tough- played all 7 tests and held up. Longevity. Pretty effective without being incredible: 4 wkts per Test, 27 average. He's bowled some great spells amidst that, don't get me wrong. But they don't come often.

English great. yes. World great? Maybe no.

Do you have him in your atg England XI?

2nd England atg XI?

Yep pretty good, though I do think that Stokes gets into at the least the second XI; and I would promote Swann into the first team, as he was probably our best spin bowler ever considering the pitches that he had to bowl on — most batsman friendly era that there has been (arguably).

I never liked to see Stewie as keeper. It was such a waste of his prodigious batting ability. Two centuries in a match in WI as opener. Smashing Waqar & Wasim about.

Robin Smith stood up to the best pace attack of the day - arguably of any day - and smashed it.

You've got six bowlers there. Greig was better than Stokes in both departments, and a brilliant catcher too. And he won a test in WI bowling off-breaks.

Swann benefitted from the change in the lbw law though - Unders never got a lbw unless he bowled on the line of the stumps.

Greig was a high class batsman but definitely not a better bowler than Stokes. Stokes is a pure match winner on his day.

Greig will be more useful in subcontinent and Stokes outside subcontinent.

Veteran England seamer Stuart Broad has revealed he could miss the upcoming Test series against Pakistan this winter.

The tour will be a historic one, with England set to play Test cricket in Pakistan for the first time in 17 years. England will first play seven T20Is there, before returning for three Test matches in December following the T20 World Cup.

However, Broad could be absent from the tour as his fiancee, former Saturdays singer and BBC Radio 1 presenter Mollie King, is due to give birth to the couple's first child in November. In his latest column for the Daily Mail, Broad admitted his availability for the series is "yet to be decided" but he will "want to be at home deep into November".

The first Test is set to begin on December 1 at Rawalpindi, but England will begin their preparation in Abu Dhabi from November 18 with a three-day warm-up game against the England Lions planned.

"All I am thinking about is entering the next Test match I play, the fittest I've ever been," Broad wrote. "At 36, that's quite a big thing to say.

"I'm going to be training five, six days a week specifically for fast bowling. So that whenever I'm next selected, I am in great condition.

"Normally I do technical work, and I made a tweak at the Oval, twisting my shoulders a little, like Dominic Cork used to, to get my wrist position better on release. It helped me swing the ball. But when the calendar ticks on to October 1, I will plunge into a new fitness regime.

"Not long after, selection for the Pakistan Test series will take place and whether I make that tour is yet to be decided. I will obviously want to be at home deep into November when Mollie and I are expecting our first child, so that will form part of selection discussions.

"My job is to make sure I am ready whenever I am called upon again and I look forward to that with an enthusiasm that has reached another level these past few weeks."

Salute to ECB for persisting with Broad had he been a Pakistan and after Joburg 36er in 2007 Broad would have been no way near the national team specially Test cricket because PCB selectors are masters at throwing someone out

There will be a greater need for rotation of the English seamers in Pakistan than at home, because in the subcontinent the weather is dryer and hotter & there are more overs to bowl. But I’m hoping that despite wanting to spend time with his newborn child this winter (totally understandable) that Broad can get over for at least one of the Test matches.

Stuart Broad will not tour Pakistan this winter after informing the selectors he is unavailable for personal reasons.

England are due to play three Tests in Pakistan in December but Broad, 36, and his partner Mollie King are expecting their first child in mid-November and The Mail on Sunday understands he has put family first.

The baby’s due date clashes with a training camp in Abu Dhabi, and missing that warm-up period — which includes a game between England and England Lions — would mean he would not be match-ready for a series that will be hosted in Rawalpindi, Multan and Karachi from December 1.

Broad is understood to have thought long and hard about his decision, not least because he enjoyed a resurgent summer with England in which he finished as the leading wicket-taker in a Test team that won six out of seven matches.

His 29-wicket haul took him to a career tally of 566, surpassing Australian great Glenn McGrath’s return, leaving him fifth in the all-time standings and second only to new-ball partner Jimmy Anderson among seamers.

The Nottinghamshire player hinted he was swaying towards withdrawing his name in The Mail on Sunday last month when he said there was a decision to be made, having prioritised his public job with England over his private life throughout a 15-year international career.

Although his final days in an England shirt will see that balance altered, he intends to have plenty of those left, with next spring’s two-Test tour of New Zealand and the 2023 Ashes very much on his radar.

And he was clearly confident of being picked for the Pakistan trip given his status and influence on a side that has changed its image and results drastically since beginning last summer on a woeful run of one win in 17.

Broad’s enthusiasm to remain an integral member of Ben Stokes’ team contrasts with his feelings just six months ago when his omission from the 1-0 series defeat in the Caribbean by an interim selection panel led to the bowler considering retirement.

However, the regime change under Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum reinvigorated the 159-cap veteran and he even excelled in his new role as first change when the recalled Ollie Robinson was thrown the new ball for the final two Tests of the summer.

But confirmation that Broad has followed Moeen Ali by ruling himself out will officially come next weekend when England name their squad to return to Pakistan.

Moeen reneged on his summer revelation that he had reversed his Test retirement after feeling uneasy about the prospect of being cooped up in hotels again, having spent three weeks with heavy security and restrictions on freedom while captaining England to a 4-3 Twenty20 win over the Pakistanis.

That trip thankfully passed without incident after the Pakistan Cricket Board invested £4.4million on VVIP-level protection for players on both sides in England’s first tour of the country since 2005.

Broad’s absence for the return visit coincides with the comeback of Mark Wood, who will add extreme pace to a bowling unit that will also include Anderson, Robinson, Matt Potts and potentially Reece Topley.

I wouldn’t pick A&B in the same team. Robbo has to get the new ball and I hope Wood can come back.

Stuart Broad says "it would be great" if Australia tried to mirror England's 'Bazball' tactics during this summer's Ashes series.

Under coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes, England have adopted an ultra-attacking approach, winning 10 out of 12 Tests.

They will look to regain the Ashes in a five-Test series starting on 16 June.

"I think it would be great for us if Australia try to take us on at our own game," Broad, 36, told the Daily Mail.

"If we can get them playing in a slightly different style they could make mistakes and that would be brilliant for us."

Australia batter Steve Smith scored 774 runs at an average of 110.57 in the last Ashes series in England, a 2-2 draw in 2019.

Broad said: "Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja are all guys who like to bat time and accumulate so if we can nibble away at them and just get them thinking 'why are we not scoring quicker? Why are we not moving the game forward?'"

Before McCullum and Stokes took over, England had won just one of their previous 17 Tests - including a 4-0 series loss in Australia in 2021/22.

But under the new regime they chased 299 in just 50 overs to beat New Zealand in June 2022 at Trent Bridge and followed up by pursuing 378 - an England record - to defeat India at Edgbaston.

In December, they blitzed 506-4 on day one of the first Test against Pakistan on the way to a 3-0 series victory, the first time a visiting team had secured a clean sweep in Pakistan.

Australia have held the Ashes since 2018 but have not won a series in England since 2001, although they swept England aside in the most recent series Down Under.

"Nothing was harsher than the last Ashes series," said Broad.

"But in my mind I don't class that as a real Ashes. The definition of Ashes cricket is elite sport with lots of passion and players at the top of their game.

"Nothing about that series was high-level performance because of the Covid restrictions.

"The training facilities, the travel, not being able to socialise. I've written it off as a void series."

He is better than every England pacer outside Anderson, then I’d rank him ahead of every one outside Khan, Akram, McGrath and Walsh

581 Test wickets for Broad now!!!

lcimg-98e2bfd3-dc93-47e2-8c12-127ac0bec704.jpeg

Insane numbers, ridiculous.

By the end of this summer, Broad might have 600 and Anderson 700! we’re living in a fantasy, it might never happen again.

I thought the Ashes this year might be the end for this pair, but they seem hungry to continue.

Anderson may want to continue until his body allows him to.

With his skill, he could be effective in English conditions into his late 40’s! it’s almost like it’s not even sport anymore at this stage, but a retirement hobby!

He is good but not as good as Anderson, Starc or Boult.

He has been a failure in subcontinent and only achieved consistent success in England, New Zealand and South Africa.

Broad Addresses Labuschagne's Dismissal

As per Broad, this is exactly what shook Marnus' focus and helped him take his wicket. "As for the ball that got Labuschagne, that's the one I am looking to bowl him by design. A couple of policemen did me a favour when they got in Marnus' eyeliner and slowed things down a bit, allowing me to focus and with that one, I was able to follow through with the plan and that's always a really nice feeling,"

A couple of policemen did me a favour when they got in Marnus' eyeliner and slowed things down a bit, allowing me to focus and with that one I was able to follow through with the plan and that's always a really nice feeling,"

"I played three out of my four County Championship games for Nottinghamshire this season on really slow pitches, so I wanted to bring the outside edge into things more and that's why I worked on it with Kevin Shine, our bowling coach, earlier this year,"

2 top wickets for Broad - every time people write him off - he comes roaring back.

There has to be a point where either Broad/ Anderson or England think they’ve played enough. Yes these two do keep going and do take wickets, but they are not destructive, they don’t run through sides as they did before - Jimmy does still do it a bit

Who knows how many potential England pacers have been discarded. Mcgrath, Ambrose, Walsh, Akram could have continued way beyond their retirements but they didn’t. Sometimes enough is enough.

The Pavilion End at Trent Bridge will be officially renamed in honour of Stuart Broad ahead of the second ENG v WI Test

STUART BROAD END TO BE OFFICIALLY UNVEILED

Stuart, Nottinghamshire's most successful bowler on the international stage, will be joined by his father, club president and former Notts and England opener Chris, as a plaque is unveiled at the Stuart Broad End before the start of play, commemorating Stuart's fine career with Notts and England, which concluded last summer.

"I'm delighted that the Nottinghamshire Committee decided that Stuart should be remembered in this way. To have an end named after him is a complete delight," said Chris.

"It was quite surreal, the first time I visited Trent Bridge this year, to hear the announcement that the bowler was bowling from the Stuart Broad End.

"I took a picture of the scoreboard and sent it to Stuart, and he was a little bit emotional seeing his name up there.

"I'm so proud and privileged to see him being given that honour."

He's definitely up there with the best bowlers that England have produced. One of those players that were deemed poster boys for their country and were tagged as an exciting young prospect and have fulfilled both of those promises. He's had a fulfilling career for England and there's more to come from him.
I felt Finn had the most potential out the big 3 quicks.
Sadly injuries curtailed his career
