Tendulkar is the first one that comes to mind along with Afridi for staying on way beyond their due dates and I think Sanga and Mahela could have easily played on for a while if they wanted.

Tendulkar : Should have retired in 2011 after winning the cup. Was in form till then
Afridi: Should have retired in 2011 WC

Misbah: Should have played 2 years more and waited for the team to complete their transition phase
Dhoni is Tests: Yes he should have stayed. Should have played as a WK

Mike Hussey retired too early in my opinion

Ganguly and Dravid as well perhaps.

Sachin overstayed his welcome a tad bit, but that was expected since Indians would never let him retire till he was absolutely finished.

Hussey is an interesting one.

In retrospect Australia is much better off for him having chosen to retire when he did

Na both Ganguly and Dravid retired when they realised they couldn't carry on anymore.

Australian players do appear to retire early.

Clarke, Johnson, Harris, etc.

I was especially disappointed when Harris retired because I was looking forward to him bowling in the Ashes in England. Though both Clarke and Harris were hampered by severe back and leg injuries which made it impossible for them to carry on.

Javed Miandad should have never come back for 1996 WC
Kapil Dev ?

In recent time Ponting n Sachin ( abit long for both)

Feel Warne had abt 2 more years of test cricket in him.

I think the Australians mentioned in this thread retired at perfect time, if they had carried on longer and could not perform to their standards people would say they overstayed..

Australians in this regard are thorough professionals they retire when they feel the time is right.. Unlike sub continent players who decide based on emotions and sponsorship deals..

A lot have overstayed Kapil, miandad, Tendulkar, Afridi, Waqar, Shoaib etc etc..

The one who I would have wanted to see more of was Shane bond but injuries and ICL money robbed us.. If he had stayed fit I would have loved to see him bowl more in international games.. One of the cleanest actions for a fast bowler..

Sachin should have graciously retired after 2011 WC win .
He hung around too long , only to suffer the humongous 8-0 thrashing in Eng and Aus . his 100th 100 vs Bang was perhaps his worst innings.
BCCI had to organize a special home test series vs Windies just to send him off.

Afridi should have retired after 2011 too.

Players that retired too early -

1. Greg Chappell - his last innings was 182*
2. Viv Richards - should have played the '92 WC
3. Brian Lara - His last 3 Test innings had a Double & a single ton, should have played Test for couple of years
4. Sangakara - need not to explain
5. Muralitharan - Without IPL, I believe he would have continued for couple of years
6. Shane Warne - His last Ashes in ENG, he had 40 wickets - would have taken at least another 30 had he toured 4 years later.
7. Gavasker - his last Test innings was 96, penultimate FC innings was 188
8. Curtley Ambrose - should have played 2003 WC
9. Mark Taylor - easily could have played Test for 2/3 years
10. Imran Khan - should have toured ENG '92, however his body & mind was gone, and he retired from the best position

Players who carried it too long -
1. Kapil Dev
2. Javed Miandad
3. Shahid Afridi
4. Sachin Tendulkar
5. YK (ODI)
6. Ponting

In general, Aussie players retire early, therefore I won't name many Aussie players whom I believe could have played couple of years more - last 2 were Clarke & Watson.

Players who could have carried on in my opinion- Clarke, sanga, Hussy.
Players who carried on too long- pointing, sachin, afridi,

Can't think of loads more although I'm sure there are plenty who apply to both categories.

Wasn't expecting it to happen but it looks like Misbah may have joined the 'carried on for too long' list.

He was in the 'carried on for too long' list since the last two years. A drawn series in England is all that he has to show for in the last two years. Clinging on way past his self-by-date.

That's a matter of perception.

I don't think many would have felt that way if he retired straight after the Australia series.

Sangakara , Saeed Anwar , Grame Smith , Gavaskar , Dravid retired early

Kapil Dev , Jayasuria , Younis Khan , javed Miandad , Afridi .

Retired too early
Waqar Younis, Sangers, Mitchell Johnson, GilChrist, Watson, Swann and Murali. Murali announced his intention to retire just before the 1st Test out of 3 tests while he was 8 wickets away from taking 800 wickets. I remember when he was yelling at Malinga to bowl at stumps as he was bowling away from the stumps so Murali can pick his 800th and final wicket of the match.

Over stayed
Jayasuriya(biggest culprit), Ponting, Sachin, and Alex Stewart. Afridi didn't stay on for too long, his inconsistency has always been there.

Afridi, Misbah, Younis carried for too long.

Yousuf retired (not selected) early.

Just cant believe a stroke maker like Yousuf was not there in 2011 wc while Hafeez, Younis, Misbah were there. Thank You Waqar.
