My analysis on the best XIs for each side and how good they are.
Quetta
1. Saim Ayub [E]
2. Chris Gayle
3. Cameron Delport
4. Azam Khan
5. Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk)
6. Ben Cutting
7. Anwar Ali
8. Mohammad Nawaz
9. Dale Steyn
10. Zahid Mehmood
11. Mohammad Hasnain
Batting is explosive and will consistently put up big scores. Bowling, however, has the potential to be extremely expensive. A lot will depend on whether Hasnain can improve his economy rate on last year and form a formidable opening duo with Dale Steyn. I would not play Naseem Shah unless he’s back up to 150. Zahid Mehmood is a confirmed starter and my surprise breakout star.
Islamabad
1. Alex Hales
2. Phil Salt
3. Shadab Khan
4. Colin Munro
5. Hussain Talat
6. Iftikhar Ahmed
7. Rohail Nazir (wk)
8. Faheem Ashraf
9. Hassan Ali
10. Ahmed Safi Abdullah [E]
11. Reece Topley
Lots of different combinations since they have a lot of floaters in the order, and all of their bowlers can bat. No matter how many wickets you take, they’ll keep batting at high strike rates as they know the tail is the longest in the league. Top 4 is one of the best in the competition, and 5-7 is solid but nothing remarkable. However, 5-7 should be given clear instructions to bat at high strike rates (150-160) since 8-11 can all bat. This depends a lot on how smart the coaching team is. Essentially, these three should act as pinch hitters. Faheem can be promoted up if there’s a favorable matchup due to his left-handedness. Bowling is fantastic, between Hassan and Topley (or Jordan) with Shadab, Faheem, Iftikhar, and Ahmed Safi Abdullah there to keep things tight in the middle overs. If Shadab can regain bowling form in terms of ability to take wickets, then the bowling unit can click very well.
Lahore
1. Sohail Akhtar
2. Fakhar Zaman
3. Mohammad Hafeez
4. Ben Dunk (wk)
5. Tom Abell
6. David Wiese
7. Samit Patel
8. Maaz Khan [E]
9. Shaheen Afridi
10. Haris Rauf
11. Dilbar Hussain
Rashid Khan, I’m hearing, will be unavailable for the first half of the tournament. This means Maaz Khan will be picked as the emerging player. As with last year, too much pressure on Hafeez and Dunk. Though I rated this the best side right after the draft, on closer inspection the batting falls rests too much in the hands of Sohail Akhtar and Fakhar Zaman. None of the bowlers can bat, so if Sohail and/or Fakhar get out too early, too much pressure comes down on the middle order to bail the Qalandars out. The main issue in balance comes with the emerging pick, as it seems Maaz is a guaranteed starter but can neither bowl nor bat. Rashid Khan in for Maaz provides some much needed balance in both batting and bowling, but this means they will have to play Zaid Alam as the emerging pick and probably drop Samit Patel for Zeeshan Ashraf or Salman Ali Agha. Samit in particular is a very disappointing pick as his major utility last year was on a rank turner, otherwise just a bland utility cricketer.
Karachi
1. Babar Azam
2. Sharjeel Khan
3. Zeeshan Malik
4. Colin Ingram
5. Joe Clarke (wk)
6. Imad Wasim
7. Danish Aziz
8. Mohammad Nabi
9. Mohammad Amir
10. Mohammad Ilyas [E]
11. Waqas Maqsood
That’s the best XI but I’d be surprised if they went with it. Expect Arshad Iqbal in for Ilyas and Walton in for Clarke (or Walton as keeper and Clarke in for Malik....). Also Dan Christian in for Danish Aziz... Lots of potential here to make some bad decisions and I don’t have much faith in either Herschelle Gibbs or Imad Wasim. That being said, if they do play the XI I listed above, consider this to be a very strong contender. The batting is fantastic, lots of depth until number 11 even which gives the likes of Sharjeel, Malik, and Ingram the room to play their shots. Babar is a class act, Sharjeel is in form, and Zeeshan will be hungry to impress. Ingram, Clarke, Wasim, and Danish will be a very solid middle order and Nabi, Amir, Ilyas, and Maqsood can hit sixes in the last two overs. However all this requires clear planning, similar to Islamabad, with clearly defined roles.
Peshawar
1. Kamran Akmal (wk)
2. Imam ul Haq
3. Haider Ali
4. Shoaib Malik
5. David Miller
6. Liam Livingstone
7. Ravi Bopara
8. Amad Butt
9. Wahab Riaz
10. Mujeeb ur Rahman
11. Abrar Ahmed [E]
I hope they don’t play Umaid Asif and Mohammad Irfan. I don’t see where Rutherford fits in, considering he was their diamond pick, but all the other batsmen were retained so unlikely to come in for Livingstone. Can’t come in for Bopara or they won’t even have 5 bowlers unless Malik bowls four overs! Overall a very mediocre unit, a lot will depend on Kamran who I expect to go all guns blazing considering his recent grievances with the PCB. Imam has improved, but Haider seems to have begun feeling some pressure as a batsman and will need Kamran, Imam, and Shoaib to talk him through. This will be a very hot and cold season for Haider, in all probability. Good news is they bat deep, so a clear game plan will go a long way. I don’t see Mohammad Imran getting any games unless he comes in for Bopara. Bowling is also just okay, nothing really special. The team will be heavily reliant on performances as a unit, as there is no one player who can be the MVP for them.
Multan
1. Chris Lynn
2. Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
3. Shan Masood
4. Rilee Rossouw
5. Khushdil Shah
6. Carlos Brathwaite
7. Shahid Afridi
8. Imran Tahir
9. Sohail Tanvir
10. Sohail Khan
11. Shahnawaz Dhani [E]
Very balanced batting lineup, though there are question marks on Rizwan and Shan as T20 players. Bowling is solid, but a question mark on Dhani and Sohaibullah. I wouldn’t play James Vince or Sohaib Maqsood as there’s no other keeper in place of Rizwan... unless Khushdil keeps. Not a bad idea? Unit is okay, though I expect it to be blown away by a good bowling attack and smacked by a good batting attack.
