Pakistanis will dominate this. It would be interesting to see however how many non Pakistanis can make that list.

Surely Kapil Dev has to be there somewhere.

What about Mallinga, Vaas, Srinath?

Good thread.

Wasim
Imran
Waqar
Akhtar
Kapil
Asif(unfulfilled talent)
Vaas
Zaheer
Srinath
Ishant

Dunno about Fazal Mahmood but many rate him highly.

Well given his good stats and taking into account the fact that he was basically a one man army Fazal deserves to be in the top 5. Everyone who has played with him or against him rate him very highly.

Average of 24 combined with 4 10fers and 13 5 wicket hauls in just 34 matches is nothing short of amazing.

Good list. In a matter of few years, I can see Bumrah occupying the 4th spot behind Immy and two Ws.

Can he surpass Imran and Waqar by the end of his career? What stats does he need to have in order to do that?

About 400 test wickets averaging less than 25 and with iconic series performances under his belt. Yeah, it's a fantastic dream.

People can quibble about the order but it's hard to bear that list. Only #10- Is Sarfraz more deserving than Asif? He's not a better bowler though so...

It is conceivable that Ishant could continue his current improvement and make the list by the time he retires too. Of course others could but he'd be the closest to unseating Srinath or Zaheer by the time he's done. It would require his current form for a good few years though.

Sad to see Mohammae Anir failing to make it.

No mention of Aqib Javed either. Wasnt he one of their good bowlers in the 80s/90s?

What about Umar Gul ?

I dont think akhtar with less than 200 test wkts deserves to be on that list. Make no mistake, I am akhtar's fan. I met him in Singapore a few years back, spent one on one 5-10 mins with him while we both have called for taxi at the hotel. I found him to be a very reasonable and nice guy, someone who would be fun to hang out with. However, what exactly are akhtar's accomplishments ? Any memorable big tournament performances baring some random ODI matches in Sharjah. May be great perforrmances in a couple of test innings but surely that isn't a long list of achievements.

I thought long and hard about including the old war horse Sarfraz in this list instead of Asif, but like you I just felt Asif had to be in there for sheer skill. Sarf averaged 32 with the ball and had a strike rate of 78, hardly numbers that warrant selection ahead of Asif.

I am. He was a Pakistani bowler playing for India. Was a master of both types of swing.

He is the current highest wicket taking Asian bowler outside Asia!!

Means absolutely nothing when we are talking about the top ten Asian pace bowlers of all-time. Leaving aside those I mentioned in my post, I could name ten other Asian pace bowlers that are better than Ishant.

Ishant? :))) Good one, dude.

I think he has come a long way and has been quite amazing in the last few years. His record outside Asia is quite amazing and the fact that he got 8-fers away from home means he can really run through sides away from home, where India have mostly struggled in getting 20 wickets.

Someone in coming few years will eventually surpass him but till that time I will give it to Ishant for longevity.

How do you see Zaheer's career progress under Imran or even your usual 90s Pakistan culture?

He had the potential to be a great bowler. Pace, reverse swing, yorkers, slower ball he had it all but the raw pace was gone by the time he mastered his other skills.

People like to laugh at Ishant but the truth is he is the main reason why India have been competitive outside SC. His performances are underrated because of stats.

If Jimmy/Ishant can turn it around so can Amir.

I got a feeling there is a new chapter to his career. He'll end up as an ATG, Inasha'Allah.

He had the potential to be a great bowler. Pace, reverse swing, yorkers, slower ball he had it all but the raw pace was gone by the time he mastered his other skills.

He became a complete bowler later on in his career which is why he would have found it tough to get a place in the 90s Pakistani team. However, Imran might have unlockes his true potential much earlier.

I think he has come a long way and has been quite amazing in the last few years. His record outside Asia is quite amazing and the fact that he got 8-fers away from home means he can really run through sides away from home, where India have mostly struggled in getting 20 wickets.

Ishant Sharma is not one of the top ten Asian fast bowlers. I honestly thought you were joking. Fazal was obviously miles better than Ishant but you also had the likes of Sarfaraz Nawaz, Aqib Javed, Malinga and Umar Gul. Keep in mind this conversation is not just about test cricket.

Even among current bowlers, Ishant would rank below Amir, Shami, Hasan, Bumrah and Junaid. By the time these guys are done with their careers, Ishant wouldn't be in the top 20 Asian fast bowlers.

He became a complete bowler later on in his career which is why he would have found it tough to get a place in the 90s Pakistani team. However, Imran might have unlockes his true potential much earlier.

No man, disagree massively. His stats aren't far off from say, Zaheer Khan. My rating gave more value to tests, although ODIs matter as well but you gotta be successful in tests atleast. We dont know about the younger names like Hasan, Shami, Bumrah, Amir as to where they will stand when they get 250 wickets.

I rated Asif highly because I felt he was really a genius but Malinga, Javed and Gul are nobodies in tests. I have made a point about Fazal seperately as well.

Malinga, Javed and Gul have far more respect than Ishant and his test average of 35+. Tests matter the most but these other guys have actually been world class in at least one of the shorter formats, Ishant has never been world class at anything.

Your point about Fazal is incomplete. Do you rate Ishant higher than Fazal? By the same token, would you rate Ian Bell higher than Don Bradman? As for the younger bowlers, the fact that Ishant is not as good as them now, means that he will definitely be overshadowed by them when they get to their best.

Rubbish.

Ishant Sharma averages 34 with the bowl and has got 250+ wickets with 7-fers away from home. He is currently the best Asian bowler as far as outside Asia is concerned. Yes, he is world class and is at his peak. Zaheer had an avg of 33 with the bowl and has 311 wickets with 11 5-fers(home+away) total in 11 more matches. There is not much of a difference between the two statistically if we have a clear look.

Gul, Malinga and Javed are nobody in tests and I am amazed you talking of respect, lol. They are unsuccessful test player. Ishant clearly is well ahead of these names irrespective of stats and averages. He was one of those bowlers who made Ponting his bunny during his first tour of Australia.

On Fazal Mahmood, he is not a Don Bradman, LMAO. When people talk about the greatest fast bowlers from Pakistan, the names that are put are Wasim, Imran, Waqar and then to certain extent Shoaib Akhtar. Fazal Mahmood doesn't even come into discussion. So, someone who is a world class bowler and has got 250+ wickets and is a sure to get 300 wickets and play 100 tests will get a nod over him, as none of us really know him and he doesn't even come into discussions.

Hence, it is better to keep him out of these discussions and I will continue to do this as he is not the most talked out there. It is same as putting some older era England players out of discussion from these lists because we cant really comment much on it. Nothing wrong on that part.

Manoj Prabhakar? I remember him as a handy allrounder but nothing more. Full of attitude but kind of bits & pieces. I'm interested to know your thoughts or reasoning on him.

I recall something fishy in one match where with some Indian keeper he tried to block all balls when asking rate was 6 runs per over in an ODI match. He kept blocking ball after ball. Hope I am not confusing players here.

I just remember him opening the bowling and getting Gooch out.

Come to think of it, should have got Sarfraz instead. Invented reverse swing and all that.

Ah, Gooch had a massive problem against medium pace wing for a period there- Terry Alderman used to get him out for fun and totally did his head in one series.

Oui, c'est là -

In 1989. I watched him get Gooch out for a duck through binoculars.

Gooch came back from WI in 1986 and was early on his shots against the Indian medium pacers.

Then he went to India as skipper in 1990 while going through a divorce and his mind just wasn’t on batting, I think.

If you are not restricting he list to tests alone, Ajit Agarkar needs to be there ahead of many others.

ALOO’s Top 10 Asian Fast Bowlers:

1. Wasim Akram
2. Waqar Younis
3. Imran Khan
4. Shoaib Akhtar
5. Fazal Mahmood
6. Mohammad Asif
7. Kapil Dev
8. Chaminda Vaas
9. Sarfraz Nawaz
10. Javagal Srinath

Elite tier: Wasim, Waqar, Imran

2nd tier: Shoaib, Asif, Fazal, Kapil

The rest.

For me Mohammad Asif should’ve went down as one of the very best. Only Wasim Akram possessed a better skill set than him.

Gooch was an interesting character. Quite likeable, even though my Dad steered me clearly towards Team Gower with regards to England team/squabbles in that era.

It's funny I've heard a few top players say the found strict medium pace which nibbled or swung a bit the trickiest to face. Something about being too slow to rely purely on ingrained instinctive reactions and having to think/decide/wait on a shot. S Waugh got Cronje a number of times, S Waugh himself said he was troubled by someone like Tendulkar or Cronje's swingers when they bowled.

Gooch lost confidence at one point and dropped himself from the England side. It was in 1987 and that left the England top order looking defensive against Imran and Wasim. Curiously, Gooch came back for MCC at the end of that summer and scored a century and a fifty against the Rest side with Imran and Qadir in it. Funny thing, the mind.

This is probably the only top 10 list we can be proud of lol.

Dilhara Fernando could have been a bowling great.

He had the height, athleticism and speed.

Mustafizur could be the first Bangladeshi in this list by the time he retires.

Wasim,
Imran,
Waqur,
Kapil Dev,
S Akthar,
Asif
Zaheer,
Vaas,
Malinga,
Srinath

Not really. His recird isnt too bad as a bowler. Injuries ruined his career. He had huge potential.

He had all that going for him and averaged 37. I'll stand by that he had height, pace, swing etc but just wasn't a very good bowler at all. Yes, I watched him play.

World class? Ishant Sharma? What are you smoking, pal? Would you pick Ishant over any of the following names?

1) Steyn
2) Rabada
3) Philander
4) Anderson
5) Broad
6) Hazlewood
7) Starc
8) Boult
9) Southee
10) Amir
11) Hasan
12) Woakes
13) Cummins
14) Bumrah
15) Henry
16) Shami

You are right about one thing; Ishant is at his peak and despite that, he barely cracks into the top 20 pace bowlers in the world today. You would be foolish to think he cracks into a top ten pace bowlers' list that does not have the word 'worst' in its title.

Zaheer Khan has retired and his average is still better than Ishant's. By the time the latter hangs up his insignificant shoes, his average would be even higher. This is despite playing more matches outside Asia than most Asian pacers.

Please do not assume that most cricket followers are as ignorant about the great Fazal Mehmood as you. He is the father of Pakistani pace bowling and an absolute champion bowler. The comparison with Bradman was with regards to his comparatively low number of matches. However, he averaged under 25 and was a proper fast bowler and a superstar; something Ishant will never be.

I would not pick Ishant in any cricket team (does he even find a place in his domestic T20 league these days, lol?) but I would definitely consider picking Malinga, Gul and Javed in my ODI and/or T20 teams. This makes them more respected bowlers than Ishant Sharma. Add Sarfaraz Nawaz to the list; the originater of reverse swing and yet another bowler who was better at his craft than one of the most mediocre Sharmas to come out of India. Now please, don't make me bash Ishant any more. I feel bad. :(

Ishant Sharma is at Tim Southee level bowler. A very good bowler and stats dont do justice to how good he is.

Amir is a nobody in international cricket currently and if any neutral is asked whether you want to be Amir or Ishant, they will say Ishant.

Let Amir take 200 wickets first, then we will talk on it.

I agree with you,Ishant is no where near asia's top 10,but
On current form he is world class, maybe you dont follow indian cricket much but ishant is not the same trundler he once was.
if we consider his last 2 years performance he is better than(only in tests):
Mohd amir
hassan
woakes
southee
henry
he also outbowled shami in england.

Wasim
Waqar
Shoaib Akhtar
Imran Khan
Vaas
Srinath
Malinga
Kapil Dev
Zaheer Khan
Ishant Sharma

Amir has lost it in the past year or so. He can definitely leap frog into Top 10 if he can get his mojo back.
Asif was the lost talent. He could have been in Top 5 if not for that fixing scandal.

A few names that need mention are - Amar Singh , Mohammad Nissar , Khan Mohammad - their careers were short, but in terms of quality they might have been better than some of the names above.

Waqar Younis
Kapil Dev

How do you put daylight between Wasim and Imran? Does Wasim get bonus points for being a lefty or for being more recent by a few years so better video highlights?

It’s the WC92 effect. Wasim was coming into his pomp and Imran had been reduced to medium pace.

Anyone who has seen them both bowl much would not put Wasim daylight ahead of Imran.

This thread is not solely about test cricket. He has improved from being a garbage bowler to a mediocre bowler (a fast bowler doing well in England and South Africa is nothing special, frankly speaking. It is expected of them) but let's not overhype him. I don't understand why Indian fans are still overhyping trundlers when they finally have a couple of good pace bowlers in Bumrah and Shami. Also, Khalil and Siraj seem promising.

Agreed. Imran had the best peak of any fast bowler ever. He was Pakistan's greatest.

Do you rate Fazal Mehmood at all? I haven't watched him but have read a lot of good things about the man.

Don’t know much about Fazal. He was supposed to be unplayable on the matting wickets. I understand that Pakistan won tests immediately after test accession because of him, and he busted up an England side playing at home with Hutton, Compton, May, Graveney, Tyson, Statham and Wardle in it.

Could be the '92. Wasim was electric and Imran relying on his smarts alone, bowling with a bung shoulder if I recall. But Imran in full flight was spectacular, engrossing and threatening. A bit like Lillee he was a full package and had more than one way to get you out, circumstances and plans depending. Not selling Wasim short but it's the toss of a coin between them, perhaps just Wasim as he maintained for longer.

The top 5 are easily picked:

Imran
Wasim
Waqar
Shoaib
Fazal

Then there is a huge gap but the others in the top 10 would include (min. 100 test wickets)

Asif
Dev
Vaas
Zaheer
Srinath

my unbiased list based on skillset and ability plus longevity;

wasim
imran khan
waqar
shoaib
srinath
kapil dev
zaheer
vaas
fazal
mohammed shami

bumrah will beat them all by the end of his career if he keeps playing like he has but he isn't there yet.

It would require his current form for a good few years though.

there is bumrah who can be better than all. also mohammed shami who is average 21 over the past 3/4 years.

People like to laugh at Ishant but the truth is he is the main reason why India have been competitive outside SC. His performances are underrated because of stats.

ishant is better than all Pakistani bowlers right now. he is actually one of the best in the world. Stats don't tell you everything.
