Who is the bigger thief: Nawaz Sharif or Asif Zardari?

Zardari's statement against Nawaz 'unfortunate': Shahbaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD: PML-President and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif on Thursday condemned PPP supremo Asif Ali Zardari's statement about Nawaz Sharif and termed it "unfortunate."

Taking to Twitter, Shahbaz wrote that Nawaz had a firm commitment towards the betterment of the country, something which cannot be questioned.

"Zardari sahib’s statement about Mian Nawaz Sharif is unfortunate. Mian Sahib’s unwavering commitment to Pakistan has always been unquestionable," he wrote.

He continued: "Zardari sb. knows the conditions in which MNS had to go abroad. We should refrain from such remarks & work for the greater good of the country."

What had Zardari said about Nawaz Sharif?
It should be noted that in the recent by-elections that took place in the NA-133 constituency of Lahore, PML-N's candidate Shaista Pervez had won, while PPP's Muhammad Aslam Gill had grabbed the second position.

Reacting to the election results, Zardari had claimed that when Nawaz came to power, he had shrunk the constituencies, which according to him, led to PPP's loss.

"When it was a larger constituency, Benazir Bhutto had also won from there," he had said.

NAB tells IHC record went missing in Zardari’s cases

ISLAMABAD:
The National Accountability Bureau on Thursday informed the Islamabad High Court that most of the records relating to the four old references filed against former President Asif Ali Zardari in the 1990s were missing.

NAB Prosecutor Jahanzeb Bharwana asked the court that the appeals against the acquittal of the PPP co-chairperson in these references should be disposed of or adjourned till the record was retrieved.

A division bench comprising IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Aamer Farooq heard the appeals of the anti-graft body against Zardari’s acquittal.

Justice Farooq remarked that NAB’s appeals were pending with this court since 2014 -- a period of seven years.

Justice Minallah told the NAB prosecutor that this was why the anti-graft body was accused of political engineering.

“Why NAB shouldn't be held responsible as it has wasted the court's time,” he added.

“If there was a mistake, then the then-chairman of NAB should also be accountable. The economy is affected by your actions. If you can’t make a case, then you take the matter to court.”

The judge noted that it was NAB itself that had conducted the trial. “What is the fault of this court? You could not produce any document yourself.”

The NAB prosecutor replied that four appeals against the acquittal of the former president were being heard.

He contended that an accountability court had decided the matter despite the original documents and references were missing. The original record and the statements of witnesses were also missing, he added.

The court inquired whether or not the prosecutor was saying that the record went missing from the Supreme Court.

The NAB prosecutor replied that the Lahore High Court and Islamabad High Court registrars had earlier said that the record was sent to the Supreme Court and it was not found.

Justice Farooq inquired as to where the missing record was last seen.

The prosecutor told the court that he had no idea where the record went. He added that last time it was with the Lahore High Court and then he had no clue as to how it ended up at the Supreme Court.

The bench observed that a NAB investigating officer had told the trial court there was no bank account or any other evidence on the basis of which Zardari was acquitted.

Justice Farooq noted that NAB had told the accountability court that it would argue on the available documents.

The court ordered the prosecutor to look into the matter and adjourned the hearing for an indefinite period.

An accountability court in Islamabad on Saturday granted bail to PPP co-chairperson and former president Asif Ali Zardari on medical grounds in the NY property case.

Judge Muhammad Bashir presided over the hearing against the former president and issued a detailed verdict.

“Asif Zardari has been granted permanent bail in the case due to health issues whereas the New York property case against him is under investigation and NAB has yet to gather evidence against him in the case,” the written verdict stated.

It added that the anti-graft body can apply for revocation of bail on the basis of solid evidence.

“NAB received asset complaints against Asif Zardari in 2018 and 2019. It received the JIT report in April 2019. Asif Zardari was released in December 2019 after being arrested in the second case,” the court said.

Last year in November, an accountability court granted interim bail to former president Asif Ali Zardari in New York Property case till November 23.

AC-II Judge Muhammad Azam Khan heard the pre-arrest bail petition of the former president who appeared before the court in person along with his legal team.

Farook H Naek had pleaded that the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had granted interim bail to his client and now they have approached the trial court after the amendments in the NAB ordinance. “The ordinance empowers accountability courts to hear the interim bail cases,” he said.

After listening to the arguments, the court granted interim bail to Asif Zardari till November 23, and sought comments from theNAB against the plea.

The NAB had alleged that the former president owns a flat in New York City which he didn't disclose in his nomination papers submitted to the ECP. Earlier, the IHC bench had granted protective bail to Asif Zardari and instructed him to approach the trial court for more relief.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Political Communication Shahbaz Gill has claimed that Opposition Leader in the National Assembly and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif has sought a “deal” for four members of Sharif family including himself.

Addressing the media in Faisalabad on Sunday, Gill said under the proposed deal a “pardon” had been sought for PML-N leaders — Shehbaz Sharif, Hamza Shehbaz, Maryam Nawaz and Nawaz Sharif.

He added that the PML-N president had also pledged that they will fly to London if his ‘proposal’ was accepted.

The PM’s aide said the PML-N leaders were anxious to flee the country. “But Prime Minister Imran Khan will not let them escape and they all will go to jail,” he added.

He said that Shehbaz will be put behind bars very soon, claiming that a suspicious transaction of Rs4 billion had been traced recently from the bank account of the PML-N leader’s peon.

Gill said the PTI-led government wanted former premier Nawaz, who has been living in London since 2019, to return Pakistan, adding that his visa will expire soon.

On Friday, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed while taking a swipe at the Sharif family said that they no longer had any role in country’s politics.

Addressing a press conference, the minister cited some documents and claimed that PML-N President Shehbaz was “more corrupt” than his elder brother Nawaz.

Rashid asked the Sharif family to “stop waiting for any good opportunity”. “All the four Sharifs are minus from national politics,” he said, referring to Nawaz and Shehbaz besides, Maryam and Hamza.

Responding to a question about the much-talked-about return of Nawaz Sharif to the country, the interior minister said that the country’s politics would remain unchanged whether or not the former prime minister came back to Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD: An accountability court on Thursday granted one-day exemption from personal appearance to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and Opposition Leader in the Senate Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Accountability Court Judge Asghar Ali heard the Toshakhana reference in Islamabad on Thursday.

Barrister Shiraz Rajpar, the assistant counsel for former president Asif Ali Zardari, appeared before the court. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) also presented a witness in the court.

Zardari and former premier Gilani’s request for exemption from attendance was presented during the hearing

LAHORE: Former President Asif Ali Zardari fell ill here on Sunday and cancelled all his political engagements for the day.

The PPP co-chairperson was taken to a private hospital in Bahria Town where he stayed for some time and returned to Bilawal House after his medical check-up and some tests.

Mr Zardari along with a delegation of the party was to meet Jamaat-i-Islami emir Sirajul Haq in Mansoora in the evening.

However, the meeting was cancelled and both sides agreed to fix a new date for the meeting when Mr Zardari would recover.

The PPP leader has been meeting various political leaders — including PML-N’s Shehbaz Sharif, PML-Q’s Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, JUI-F’s Maulana Fazlur Rehman — these days in a bid to forge an alliance against the ruling PTI and seeking their support to oust it from power through a no-confidence move.

His visit to Mr Haq was also in this respect.

Mr Zardari felt unwell earlier on Friday and his personal doctor had rushed from Karachi to Lahore to take care of him.

An additional district and sessions judge on Saturday sought a reply from SHO Islmapura on a petition seeking registration of FIR against Prime Minister Imran Khan for 'threatening' PPP’s Asif Ali Zardari.

Petitioner Adeel Yaqoob, in his petition, contended that he approached the concerned SHO to register an FIR against the premier but the police did not cooperate as it was against the premier.

The petitioner contended that the concerned police official did not give the plaintiff a diary number and that the SHO told him to approach the higher-ups for registration of an FIR,

He later filed a petition in a district court seeking direction for registration of FIR against the prime minister under relevant sections.

The petitioner stated in the court that the respondent SHO was legally bound to register a case in accordance with law under the provision of Section 154 Cr.P.C and police rules, which were imperative in law, but the respondent has violated the aforesaid mandatory provisions and is entitled to be penalized and treated in accordance with the law, keeping view of his fundamental rights as enshrined in the Constitution and the law more specially envisaged in Section 154 Cr.P.C.

The judge, during today's hearing, sought a reply from the SHO on the petition.

The petitioner prayed that he 'heard' the PM Imra say in a public gathering that “Mr Zardari you are at the aim of my gun” which was tantamount to a threat of dire consequences.

He added that said premier's statement was also heard by millions across the country. "PM Khan caused anarchy in public through this statement," the petitioner added.

On March 9, a confident-looking Imran warned the joint opposition that the no-trust motion filed against him would sound the death knell for them.

In the same breath, the prime minister assured his supporters and allies that he had plans for his political rivals after defeating their political game.

Addressing party workers and supporters at the Governor’s House during his daylong visit to Karachi, he turned his “guns” on Asif Zardari, the co-chairman of the PPP, and said that the former president was his first target.

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry Friday predicted the end of the opposition leaders’ politics as the massive public support for Prime Minister Imran Khan had left them in a state of shock.

“Have a look at the public gathering addressed by Imran Khan in Mansehra," he wrote.

"Opposition walon ki kanpy abhi se taang rahi hain [the legs of opposition leaders have already started shaking],” he said in a tweet which also entailed a short video clip of the Mansehra public meeting.

“Look at their condition…. the "doll of plastic" held a jalsa before three dozen people by inviting them to a lunch,” the minister said while taking a dig at PML-N Vice-President Maryam Nawaz.

Lashing out at the opposition leaders, Fawad termed them “rodents” and said their politics would come to end next month.

Earlier in the day, PM Imran Khan, during his Mansehra address, had alleged that the joint Opposition had offered MNA Saleh Muhammad Rs200-250 million to vote in favour of the Opposition's no-confidence motion against the premier.

PM Imran Khan said that all the dissident PTI MNA’s had these two options when they entered this buying and selling market in Islamabad ahead of the voting on the no-confidence motion.

'Opposition is blackmailing us for NRO'

The premier further added the aim of the Opposition to bring a no-confidence motion is only to blackmail the ruling government for National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) “but it will never be given to them.”

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Saturday fixed the hearing of the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) appeals against the acquittal of former president Asif Ali Zardari in the Ursus tractor reference

A two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Athar Minallah will hear the case on Monday.

The IHC directed the NAB against further wasting the court’s time and to start preparing the case.

An accountability court had acquitted Mr Zardari in the reference in 2014.

The reference pertains to the alleged misappropriation of funds in the purchase of 5,900 Russian and Polish tractors at a cost of Rs150,000 each for the Awami Tractor Scheme.

The former president was one of the primary suspects.

According to the charge-sheet, the then government had launched the scheme in 1994 for the import of tractors.

The tractor purchase deal allegedly caused a loss of Rs268.3 million to the Agriculture Development Bank of Pakistan — now called Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited — and Rs1.67 billion to the State Bank of Pakistan.

Sharif no doubt with one eye on the situation in Pakistan and flight availability back home.

What’s mind boggling to me is, given the track record of both of these guys and all the implications they have been in how can they people still support these guys? I mean go back from the 90s to now there have been so many controversies and incidents and people still vote for these guys it makes no sense.

Because they’re beneficiaries of the corrupt system.

Most of the people that support the likes of Nawaz and Zardari are from the middle and upper class.

You’ll find that most PPP supporters live in the defence areas and have probably never taken a step inside interior Sindh.

The upper/middle class will vote for someone that doesn’t make them pay tax, doesn’t stop them from land grabbing, stealing water etc. So Zardari’s and Sharif’s are their ideal candidates.

I agree with this. However the issue right now in Pakistan is inflation. It is a world wide problem but it’s hitting Pakistanis particularly badly. The average man in the street won’t understand global economics, but will instead say, Zardari and Sharif may have been thieves, but at least the cost of living was not as bad as it is now. That average man in the street will therefore hold a perception that Zardari and Sharif did more for the working classes, even if in reality that isn’t true.

ISLAMABAD: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal shocked the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Thursday when he claimed that the man who had apologised to former premier Nawaz Sharif had no connection with the UK-based asset recovery firm Broadsheet LLC.

Without naming the CEO of asset recovery firm Broadsheet, Kaveh Moussavi, the anti-corruption watchdog said that Broadsheet had not apologised to Sharif and the one doing so was someone else, adding he didn’t want to go into details and interfere in politics.

“Broadsheet has not apologised; the one who has apologised is someone else,” the chairman of the NAB chief said, adding that, “basically, he [Moussavi] has no connection with Broadsheet”.

The revelation came during the PAC meeting when Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's leader Khawaja Asif asked Javed Iqbal if he could share the breakdown of Broadsheet inquiries over the years.

Iqbal replied he was ready to provide a complete breakdown of Broadsheet inquiries but asked that the report of Broadsheet Inquiry Commission, prepared by Supreme Court Justice (retd) Azmat Saeed Sheikh, be first read as it had addressed the issues in detail, saying if anything was left to be answered then he would.

Following the report, Asif highlighted that the head of the Broadsheet had apologised to Sharif on grounds that Broadsheet couldn’t find anything against him, but Iqbal denied the same.

When Asif emphasised that the man making the apology had been associated with Broadsheet for a long time, Iqbal replied that he didn’t want to go into details and interfere in politics.

A few seconds later, he assured Asif he would satisfy the concerns regarding the query by providing every detail but once again asked for the commission’s report to be read. He also clarified that Broadsheet was contacted years before he took charge as the NAB chairman.

Admitting the fact, Asif said he wanted to know how many cases were registered and probes were ordered, convictions were secured and how much recovery was made with the help of Broadsheet. “I just want these few details,” he said at which Iqbal quipped that the details being sought would be enough for writing a book, assuring he would provide the same.

Recently, Moussavi had issued an apology to the PML-N supreme leader through a video interview with a private TV channel for allegations of corruption. “We found a lot of plundered wealth [linked to others], but I can categorically state after virtually 21 years of investigation that not one rupee was related to Mr Nawaz Sharif or any member of his family. If anyone says otherwise they are lying,” he said.

“I have no hesitation in issuing an apology to the former prime minister for my being party to a scam and scandalous nonsense masquerading at the National Accountability Bureau,” Moussavi said, adding, “NAB is a fraud through and through.”

Broadsheet was contacted by former military ruler General Musharraf to probe political opponents, including the Sharifs, years ago.

Amendments to NAB law

Meanwhile, Javed Iqbal also spoke about the suggestion that the new government should bin NAB or amend the National Accountability Bureau Ordinance of 1999, saying “amendments are always proposed keeping personal interests and cases in view”.

Iqbal urged that his suggestions based on his experiences should also be taken if it is finally decided that the law should be amended. “Amendments to NAB Ordinance should be based on how much help would it provide in eradicating corruption,” Iqbal said, “it shouldn’t be the reason of change that who will get how much benefit.”

He said that parliament should strengthen NAB via legislation.

Recently, senior PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi urged the new government to dissolve NAB, saying its chairman was “fully under the control” of former premier Imran Khan. Abbasi had also advised the government to hold its officials accountable who allegedly tortured and looted people for years during the PTI regime.

Also read: FIA to ‘investigate NAB’ in Broadsheet scandal

He had also said that the NAB chief used to take instructions from the previous government, and a member of Imran’s cabinet used to direct the bureau chief to lodge fake cases against the opposition.

Abbasi had further predicted that a “weak NAB chairman” will now go after Imran’s friends, saying the accountability watchdog had failed to file a single reference over the alleged corruption in Imran's regime, adding facts about NAB will be brought to light soon.

Cases of plea bargain

In response to a question by PAC chairman Rana Tanveer, Iqbal said it was a “false impression” that NAB favoured plea bargain by taking only half or little amount of money from the accused, saying the final authority rested with the court in plea bargain cases and whatever was being taken from accused parties was with the approval of the courts.

On the allegations that the accused were still in service despite opting for the plea bargain option, Iqbal said it was not correct and “you won’t find anyone in service who has taken plea bargain” as NAB communicated every court order to the relevant authorities. He, however, said that NAB was not the implementing authority.

Political engineering

On Tanveer’s allegations that NAB allegedly remained involved in political engineering, Iqbal challenged to point out a single case where political engineering was evident. Tanveer while naming a few scandals like LNG, wheat, sugar and medicines said that there shouldn’t be angular or targeted inquiries; they should be transparent. It was also agreed that NAB would provide details of “looted money” by the public office holders and recoveries made in such cases in the next meeting.

Recoveries

The anti-graft watchdog also told PAC that NAB had made recoveries of Rs821 billion, including Rs500.650 indirect recoveries, Rs198.057 billion bank loans defaults, Rs45.914 of court fines imposed and Rs76.952 via voluntary return and plea bargain.

Answering a question about the recovery in pounds from Bahria Town’s Malik Riaz, Iqbal said the amount recovered from Riaz family in London in November 2019 was approximately £140 million, which was transferred to an account administered by the Supreme Court.

When Asif raised the question of where the criminal proceeds had ended up, Iqbal replied that there were institutions in the country whom one couldn't dare to look in the eye, including the apex court, but he would satisfy the query if given the time to verify the details.

Zardari reportedly reaches Dubai after name removed from ECL

ISLAMABAD: Former president Asif Ali Zardari reportedly reached Dubai on Thursday after his name was struck off the Exit Control List (ECL). According to Express News, the PPP co-chairman left Islamabad for Dubai last night in a private aircraft.

In 2018, the names of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari were placed on the ECL after the then PTI-led government announced that the names of the 172 accused in the fake accounts case would be added to the list.

The list also included the names of Zardari's sister Faryal Talpur, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, former Sindh CM Qaim Ali Shah, Omni Group's Anwar Majeed, Abdul Ghani Majeed, former chairman Pakistan Stock Exchange Hussain Lawai, former president National Bank of Pakistan Syed Ali Raza and others.

On April 24, the Ministry of Interior removed the names of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Nusrat Shahbaz, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Abdullah Khaqan and Finance Minister Miftah Ismail from the no-fly list under the ECL Amendment Rules.

The interior ministry started issuing notifications for removal of those names from the ECL that had been on it for 120 days without any compelling reason.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah had said that the names were put on the ECL for political revenge. There are names of 4,863 people on ECL, blacklist, 30,000 people in PNIL. “Yes, the ECL rules have been amended which will directly benefit 3,500 people.”

Former interior minister Sheikh Rashid on Sunday claimed that both the Sharif brothers will be thrown behind bars soon, while also insisting that political parties are on one page for early elections in the country.

"The fire has spread too far and I know and understand this situation well," Rashid told crowds gathered in Abottabad, Express News reported.

He also claimed that every political party except for Asif Ali Zardari's Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) are ready for the snap polls.

Rashid, who also heads Awami Muslim League (AML), went on to say that "thugs and looters" are now seated in the cabinet, claiming that he and deposed prime minister Imran Khan knew about 'conspirers' four months ago.

"Imran was subjected to a foreign conspiracy and people should take to the streets on the former premier's call," he said, terming the protests a movement for Pakistan's future.

Nearly a week ago, Rashid urged those at the helm of affairs to organise snap elections or the prevailing political situation could result in a deepening of the crisis. "I appeal to those at the helm of affairs and the establishment to hold elections as soon as possible."

"If that isn't done, the situation may not remain under Imran Khan's control anymore," he was quoted as saying.

He had also said that, "There's just one demand and it is to hold the snap polls. A conspiracy is afoot and so the circumstances should be kept under control."

The AML chief had warned that a long march, if held, could turn bloody, and a solution to the worsening situation should emerge before May 31.

Earlier, the ex-interior minister declared that if there was a "war with institutions", he would stand by Imran Khan like a rock because he considered him to be on the right side.

He also made it clear that he did not want democracy to end and that the only way to avoid it was by holding early elections.

Asif Zardari is a drop out.

LONDON, March 20: British officials responsible for maintaining record of all educational institutions in the country have failed to find any trace of the institution in London from where Pakistan People’s Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari is claimed to have received his graduation or equivalent qualification.

In a written response to questions by this correspondent, PPP spokesman Farhatullah Babar said: “All that I can share with you on the basis of my information is that Mr Zardari passed his examination and qualified from Cadet College Petaro, Dadu. It was not a degree as the Petaro college is not a degree college.”

When asked about the institution from where Mr Zardari received his degree, he said: “Mr Zardari studied business and economics in a school in London now called (the) London School of Economics and Business.”

The PPP claims that Mr Zardari received his graduation or equivalent degree in 1976 from this school.

Mr Babar said that academic qualifications from London School of Economics and Business were said to be equivalent to a degree, but he did not know the ‘exact title’ of Mr Zardari’s degree and address of the institution.

The PPP spokesman is not the only one who could not find the exact address or existence of the institution. Edubase UK, the country’s official body responsible for maintaining records of all private and public educational institutions, is also clueless.

In a written response to questions about London School of Economics and Business, an Edubase official said: “In order to ascertain whether or not an institution exists, I conduct a search on three registers, Edubase, The Register of Education and Training Providers and the UK Register of Learning Providers. I have been unable to find evidence of this institution.”

An official at the UK Register of Learning Providers said: “Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate London School of Economics and Business.”

Mr Zardari was twice elected as MNA from 1990-93 and 1993-96, remained senator from 1997-99 and served as a federal minister in 1993 and again in 1996.

To become a parliamentarian a minimum degree of graduation is required, a condition introduced in 2002.

Analysts say if Mr Zardari is seeking to be a parliamentarian by contesting from NA-207, the seat of assassinated PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto, he will have to submit his degree to the Election Commission. Otherwise, the PPP and its coalition partners will have to do away with the degree requirement through a constitutional amendment.

Credible records of Mr Zardari attending Cadet College in Petaro exist. He joined the college’s Jinnah House in 1966 as a student of eighth grade.

School records show that Mr Zardari completed his Higher Secondary School Education (FA/FSc) in 1974.

Mr Farhatullah Babar said: “The issue of academic qualifications and their equivalence did not arise until now. However, now that the media is asking about it we are trying to gather full details.”

It's like asking me to choose the less evil man between Adolf Hitler and Osama Bin Laden.

Both are as bad as each other, the main culprits behind the state in which the country is right now.

Zardari still triggers me more, probably because of the fact that not only he transformed Sindh into a dustbin, but also because Pakistan became a missile testing area for the USA under his tenure, and the unprecedented growth we witnessed in terrorist attacks between 2008-2014.

The country was at it's lowest when he was the President. Nawaz and his clan are probably similar or even worst kinds of looters, but Zardari is probably more evil.

I am convinced that the Nooras have been used( willingly) by Bajwa and AZ. Why would AZ be so desperate to keep Kukrii as CM? He wants to destroy the Nooras in the eyes of the public( a laudable aim) but he thinks that Bajwa will make the Billo Khusri as PM. Only one problem, Billo has about much support as the Nooras or much less. Bajwa what have you done? This is a very dangerous game by Bajwa, when in 1970, the public went against the establishment, PK was torn apart.

IHC accepts Zardari’s request to withdraw acquittal plea
Lawyer also asks court to lift restraining order in Rs8b suspicious transaction case

ISLAMABAD:
The Islamabad High Court on Thursday accepted PPP co-chairperson and former president Asif Ali Zardari’s request to withdraw his acquittal appeal in the Rs8 billion suspicious transaction reference.

A two-judge bench, comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq was hearing the matter.

Shiraz Rajpar, the assistant to Zardari’s main lawyer Farooq H Naek, told the court that his client wanted to withdraw the appeal.

The junior lawyer also asked the bench to lift the restraining order on the case's proceedings by an accountability court.

The IHC accepted Zardari’s request.

Last year, an accountability court had rejected Zardari’s petition for withdrawal of his acquittal plea in a reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

The PPP leader had challenged the accountability court’s order in the IHC.

In an earlier hearing at the accountability court, Naek had told the judge that there was no charge of causing loss to the national kitty or the allegations of abuse of power or money laundering in this case. He added that Rs8 billion suspicious transaction in the case was a private deal, which no longer fell under NAB’s jurisdiction.

Talking to reporters, Naek said earlier he had filed an application on behalf of Zardari before the court under Section 265-D, seeking his client’s acquittal. However, he added that the court had turned it down.

He said Zardari had bought House No F-33, block-04 in the Clifton area of Karachi for a sum Rs150 million, but not as a holder of public office.

Zardari, he maintained, had purchased the property as a private person and had no relation with the government account

“It was a private civil transaction between the seller and the purchaser.” he added.

According to the reference, Mushtaq Ahmed, a former stenographer of the presidency, had opened a joint account with a private housing society. The account had been used for depositing corruption and money laundering money, the reference added.

It read there was concrete evidence that Zardari had purchased a house in the Clifton area of Karachi through corruption money. It also stated that the stenographer, Ahmed had made payment for Zardari’s Clifton house.

An amount of Rs150 million was paid to one Ahmad Abdul Bari against the property, which was transferred in the name of Zardari from the account of Ahmed.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Fawad Chaudhry has responded to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto's speech, saying that Zardari and his son have buried the political legacy of Zulfikar Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto in the tombs as the “people of Sindh are praying for salvation from Zardari's bandit rule”.

The PTI leader, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said, “Puppets of the establishment staged a show on the occasion of Benazir’s [death] anniversary.”

Fawad said that in order to benefit from NRO-2, Zardari and his son declared complete detachment from politics of Zukfikar Bhutto and Benazir. “The Federation has restricted Pakistan's largest political party to a few settlements in Sindh and made it a haven for criminals.”

He said that the people of Sindh were praying for deliverance from the bandit rule of Zardari. “The people of Sindh are suffering from the calamity of floods, while Zardari's followers have been pouring Sindh's money into their pockets.”

Bhutto gave the Constitution to the country, he said, while Zardari colluded with the “thieves of Jati Umra” to flout its human rights chapter.

Fawad said that in order to gain power, Zardari and his son became facilitators of every shameful attack on the Constitution, democracy and parliament.

“Zardari and his son are also facilitators in the crime of ruining the economy which is growing at the rate of 6%.”

The PTI leader said that due to the facilitation of Zardari and his son, terrorism, which was extinct until eight months ago, was resurfacing while the provinces were being deprived of their resources.

Fawad said that with the shameful support of Zardari and his son, the freedom of expression is being crushed and the people are being deprived of their political rights.

“Zardari and his son are also involved in the crime of increasing the prices of flour and food items by several times,” he said. “We will make those who seek life in escape from the election stand in front of the people.”

An accountability court on Wednesday reserved a decision over a petition of former president Asif Ali Zardari in the Park Lane reference, ARY News reported.

A petition filed by former president Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday stated that the case is not in the jurisdiction of the accountability court after the NAB law amendment in 2022.

The court should either send the reference back to NAB or acquit him, the petitioner told the court.

Ridiculing the heads of PML-N and PPP, PTI chief Imran Khan on Saturday said that both Nawaz Sharif and Asif Zardari only had money but no respect, adding that ennobling and honouring anyone was only in the hands of Almighty.

Addressing an iftar dinner with party workers at his Zaman Park residence, the PTI chairman noted that the PML-N supremo “only had money but no respect”.

“He (Nawaz) cannot come out on streets. He is abused everyday while sitting in the most expensive area of London,” he said.

Imran said Zardari and Nawaz would have been “more respectful” if any wealthy person had the authority to “buy admiration” by spending money.

“Ennobling and honouring anyone is only in the hands of Almighty.”

This was confirmed by the Netherlands' Ministry of Education, Culture and Science that the chapter is from a textbook of a four-year secondary vocational education program in the country.

According to the ministry spokesperson, the chapter was from an old school textbook for 16-year-old students, enrolled in the four-year program.

The spokesperson for the ministry told Geo Fact Check said that the chapter was from an old school textbook for 16-year-old students, enrolled in the four-year program. The textbook features a news article on the Pakistani ex-president for a class discussion.

“This is an older textbook, which refers to a news article of that time,” he told Geo Fact Check via WhatsApp, “It’s very normal to discuss news items of all sorts in classrooms, especially in subjects such as citizenship and social sciences, to which this book refers to.”

The spokesperson explained that in the Netherlands, publishers of school books are responsible for the contents of the books, not the Dutch government, adding that the publisher of this particular book has informed the ministry that the textbook is being reviewed for a new edition, which will be rolled out next year.

“If articles are outdated or do not display the current facts, they will be replaced,” he said.

As per a Google translation of the chapter, it states that Zardari, the former president of Pakistan, has been arrested for corruption and that he and his sister are suspected of money laundering.

The chapter further reads that Zardari has served time in prison and is known as "Mister 10 per cent" because of the payments he collected on government contracts.

Besides Asif Ali Zardari, the three-time former prime minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif has also been mentioned in the article.

“Zardari is not the only former government leader to be convicted,” the article reads, “Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was ousted in 2017, last year he was sentenced to seven years in prison for corruption.”

The chapter further asks students to write why Zardari is called "Mr 10%”.

Zardari says Imran should face courts instead of running away

PPP leader and former president Asif Ali Zardari has condemned the riots that occurred in cities following the arrest of Imran Khan, calling them regrettable and shameful.

In a statement, Zardari stated that the PTI chief, who was arrested in a corruption case, should face the courts instead of running away.

"When I take charge of the economy, I will take the foreign exchange reserves to $100 billion," Zardari says

Ex-president Asif Ali Zardari has said that during his time in jail, he read several books on the economy and is confident of taking Pakistan's dwindling foreign exchange reserves to $100 billion.

Zardari, who served jail time in the 1990s and the 2000s, said as he studied books on the economy, his advice helped the then-Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government to boost the forex reserves to $24 billion.

"When I take charge of the economy, I will take the foreign exchange reserves to $100 billion," PPP Co-chairman Zardari told the party's ticket holders during a meeting at Bilawal House in Lahore.

The PPP elder mentioned that the army's budget isn't that big, however, it is targeted by unnecessary propaganda.

"There is a solution to do everything in politics. Those who don't understand politics, they don't even have solutions," Zardari, who served as the president from 2008 to 2013, said.

The PPP co-chairman, without elaborating, said "they" cannot hold elections within the next two months and polls will only take place when " I say so".

Forget the books he read in jail, he needs to tell us what he's been smoking!

The idea that someone could qualify to transform a national economy by reading a few books while in jail is kind of cute. For some reason it made me think of Robert De Niro's character in Cape Fear who learned to read about law and thought it qualified him as a lawyer. So he became a well qualified psycho as opposed to an illiterate one. :)))

Govt may amend law to bring in dollars
ITO amendment likely to raise cap on legally transferrable amount bypassing current unexplained income limits

The government is considering allowing people to bring in up to $100,000 from abroad without disclosing the source of income in a move that it hopes can fetch billions of dollars in the next fiscal year. However, this move can create some troubles.

Sources told The Express Tribune that the government is considering bringing an amendment to Section 111 (4) of the Income Tax Ordinance that deals with unexplained income.

Some describe the proposals as a perpetual tax amnesty scheme while others see it as an alternate source to arrange precarious foreign currency to avoid a default.

According to the current law, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) cannot ask the source of income, if foreign exchange remitted from outside Pakistan through normal banking channels does not exceed Rs5 million in a tax year; is encashed into rupees by a scheduled bank and a certificate from such bank is produced to that effect.

A few years ago, the then government had reduced the limit from Rs10 million to Rs5 million to reduce the chances of converting black money into white money.

In the last budget, the government had also expanded the web to the remittance received through money service bureaus, exchange companies or money transfer operators.

The sources said there is a proposal to replace “Rs5 million” with “$100,000” in the relevant section.

At the current rupee-dollar parity, Rs5 million are equal to $17,500 while $100,000 are equal to Rs29 million. This amount cannot fall in the category of normal remittance by a member to his family.

In case Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif endorses the proposal, there will be an almost five times increase in the amount that the people can bring in without disclosing the source of income.

The government officials remained tight-lipped on the question whether there was a proposal to bring an amendment to Section 111 (4) but said that the dollar value has not yet been decided.

The sources said the Finance Ministry had also taken the central bank into confidence but the final decision has not yet been made.

Pakistan has committed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that it will not give any further tax amnesty. Any such move to relax the Rs5 million foreign remittances without disclosing the source of income will be treated as an amnesty.

Usually, every commercial bank inquires about the source of remittance of as small an amount as $500 before transferring an equal amount in rupees in the bank account of the beneficiary.

The sources said the government is hoping to receive billions of dollars through this channel which, they said, would provide respite until a new IMF programme is signed.

The greatest sickness, burden, and cruelty on this planet is the PPP. It is a bloodthirsty terror outfit that is masquerading as a political party. No other party disgusts me more than the PPP.

The greatest sickness, burden, and cruelty on this planet is the PPP. It is a bloodthirsty terror outfit that is masquerading as a political party. No other party disgusts me more than the PPP.

The only decent person from this party is Aitezaz Ahsan who I'm not sure why still loyal to this party after so many years of being neglected by its leadership.

Former president and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari emphasised the need for unity and economic development during his address at an APTMA meeting in Lahore on Friday.

He expressed his commitment to fostering collaboration with other political parties and working towards a prosperous Pakistan, Express News reported.

Addressing the participants, Zardari dismissed any notion of being cheated by others and stated that he has no intention of deceiving the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

He stressed the immense potential of Pakistan, referring to it as a "golden basket" blessed with abundant resources. Zardari reminded his efforts to expand exports to Europe and drew a comparison to Bangladesh, highlighting the benefits it enjoys as a proxy of India.

Zardari offered his willingness to discuss and sign the “Charter of Democracy”, a document aimed at promoting democratic principles and cooperation among political parties.

He underlined his commitment to creating a level playing field and expressed readiness to sign a “Charter of Economy” to address the instability in the country. Zardari acknowledged the importance of stability in attracting investment and preventing capital flight, as Pakistanis are currently seeking investment opportunities abroad.

Highlighting the nation's potential, Zardari emphasised the need for collaboration in fostering Pakistan's development. He expressed a desire to cultivate cotton in Jhal Magsi, highlighting the country's natural resources and its ability to set an example for others.

Insecurity prompting businesses to move out of Pakistan: Zardari

Former president Asif Ali Zardari has said Pakistani businessmen along with their capital are moving out of the country only because of ‘insecurity’ despite the fact that they could get a ‘lucrative’ return on investment in Pakistan.

Even Dubai doesn’t offer such a lucrative return, as Pakistani businessmen could get “1000 per cent return” on investment in their own country, the co-chairman of key ruling coalition partner PPP claimed while suggesting the business community to get the charter signed by each political party to steer Pakistan out of financial crisis and stabilise the economy.

This was PPP leadership’s third interaction with businessmen in less than a month, as the ex-president, flanked by Minister for Industries and Production Syed Murtaza Mahmud and Senate standing committee on finance and revenue chairman Saleem Mandviwalla, spoke to members of the All-Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) on Friday.

Just two weeks ago, Mr Zardari had renewed the call for a charter of economy during his interaction with members of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

However, this time he urged the businessmen to get the charter signed by “each political party”, telling them that he had no issue with whichever political party they supported. But, he added, “You should at least sign a certain charter of economy with every political party.”

Recalling that he had also made a similar offer about a national charter of economy to the cricketer (a reference to ex-premier Imran Khan) but he could not understand the real issues of the country, Mr Zardari said the PPP was ready to sign such a charter then and there.
