With the PSL wrapping up and a T20I series vs Bangladesh on the horizon (in Faisalabad and Lahore), it’s the perfect time to talk squad selection. A lot of players have put their hands up this season — some making a strong comeback, others announcing themselves as serious future prospects.
Let’s go through some names worth talking about:
Hassan Ali – One of the better comeback stories this season. Looks sharp with the new ball and has shown he still has the energy and fight. Could be a valuable asset again.
Abbas Afridi – Keeps growing as a T20 bowler. Smart, deceptive, and consistently in the wickets, especially at the death. If we’re building a long-term pace attack, Abbas should be part of it.
Sahibzada Farhan – Has been one of the top run-scorers, including a brilliant hundred against Zalmi. He’s aggressive and in form — not many openers are striking like him. However, his problem against quick and short bowling has been persistent since his debut and still continues.
Fakhar & Farhan > Rizwan?
Rizwan is currently the top scorer of the tournament, but his strike rate is 139, which is on the lower side. Farhan and Fakhar Zaman both have strike rates of 150+. Safe to assume Rizwan doesn't merit a comeback to the national side? However, if Farhan and Fakhar comeback on the back of these performances, how would the top-order shape up?
Yasir Khan & Mohammad Haris – Among the local batters with the highest strike rates — Yasir is up there at 160+ and Haris isn’t far behind. Haris also brings x-factor. Continue with Haris as a wicket keeper and bring in Yasir who has a century in the Champions T20 Cup this year?
Hassan Nawaz – Calm and mature knock in a big chase recently and scored a T20I century for Pakistan earlier this year. Could be a long-term prospect, but also ready now.
Faheem Ashraf – A five-wicket haul, a four-for, and handy runs with the bat. Third-highest wicket-taking local in the PSL so far. Might be the right time to bring him back as an all-rounder.
Abrar Ahmed – Probably the best spinner in the league this season. Very economical, always attacking. If Shadab isn’t at his best, Abrar is more than ready to lead the spin attack.
Ubaid Shah & Ali Raza – Two rookies who’ve stood out. Ubaid has pace and control beyond his age. Ali Raza has been very steady too. Maybe not starters yet, but definitely worth a call-up to the squad.
Shadab Khan – He’s had a mixed season, a few quiet games and a few impactful ones. Still offers a lot as a leader and utility player, but the competition from Abrar is heating up.
Plenty of new names knocking on the door and some old ones finding their rhythm again. With a home series coming up, it’s a great chance to try out some of these in-form players.
