Who will be Pakistan's captain for the one-off ODI vs Bangladesh (April)?

With the main focus over next 2 years being primarily tests and T20 games for pakistan in regards to fixtures, there will soon have to be a decision made by PCB on who will be the next ODI skipper.

ODI fixtures will be few and far between. But with a single ODI to be played vs bangladesh it will be time to pick a new skipper. So who will it be.

1 vs Bangladesh (April)
3 v holland (july)
3 v SA (OCT)
3 vs Zim (Nov/Dec)

10 ODIs only this year. Time to blood a new team, no TTFs and hopefully Babar as captain.

Looking at pakistans fixtures then have the following number of ODI games

2020 - 10
2021 - 12
2022 - 14

So 26 games before the world cup so they need to identify ideal players and captain for ODI quickly.

Babar is the most likely candidate. I think Imad is a decent captain but f he was to be considered T20 was the ideal format for him to start considering the T20 WC was in 2020 however, PCB's decision to appoint Babar T20 captain probably meant they think he is ready to handle the responsibility and there would be no reason to not give him ODI captaincy. Giving it to someone else would mean 3 different captains for 3 different formats which isnt ideal.

Imad is a decent captain, but he is not a long term option.

Babar is a long term option that will be around by the 2023 World Cup.

So I would go for Babar, considering they have already given him the T20 captaincy.

Why not Sarfraz .... for one last time against BD. Or Mo Hafeez for one last time, if he agrees to retire. I would have said Amir - but he has to agree to "un retire" again.

On a serious note, I think, they should appoint Babar Captain here - already T20I Captain and looks like Captaincy didn't cost his batting much. With WK in back drop, I hope days of Imad, Azhar as ODI captain are over.

I am surprised he is not in the options list. Massive chance of him coming back and "leaving a legacy" in ODIs as well.

Imad with his fitness is a disgrace to competitive sports. His consistent failures in fitness tests show his lack of desire to improve which will damage whatever strides the team has made in regards to fitness.

Babar seems to be the only choice (aside from Shan) to take over and it'll be a relatively easy beginning for him with BD and Holland up first.

With next world cup in mind. Babar Azam makes the most sense:

1. He's in the right age group.
2. He makes the team on merit
3. He commands respect from his peers due to his personal performance.
4. He's already T20 captain. Pakistan should stay away from appointing different captains in each format.

Give it to Babar. It won't show much confidence in him if he gets the t20 captaincy but not the ODI. He's the best player and no other candidates really stand out as obvious alternatives.

Imad would also be a reasonable choice, but it really hasn't been that long where he couldn't even get a regular spot in the team. Even during the WC he was dropped for a period.

Imad is a bit hit n miss. Babar is the most logical choice. However, the argument to not burden him with too much responsibility is also valid as we don't want to distract him from his rise as world class batsman.

Actually, it seems as though Imad should be given the T20 captaincy and the more important ODI captaincy can go to Babar.
