44 days in office - made a mess of the UK economy and now resigned.

That was Liz Truss.

So, who will take over now?

Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt, two contenders in Britain's previous leadership contest this year, are believed to be in the running to become the nation's next prime minister following Liz Truss's resignation on Thursday, Sky News reported.

Separately the Guardian's political editor reported former minister Michael Gove was "ruled out" for the leadership.

But is Boris Johnson still lurking around too?

This is very true. We will not see a stable Tory government at least until 2030.

Boris for PM, LT gets FM and we pretend the last 3 months have not happened.

:akhtar

Truss did her work/role by giving another £2billion to Ukraine.

This circus is to keep the public occupied while the nation is planning upto 3 day blackouts in Jan/Feb.

Europe is in decline, no matter which puppet is installed.

There is a threshold of 100 nominations this time. The MPs will fix it so that Bodge doesn’t get through. If there are three it goes to the membership who will pick Bodge. Now, Bodge 2.0 means straight back into 24/7 lying at the despatch box and more scandal.

Sunak is brown, Badenoch is black so the elderly 96% white Tory membership will not elect them. But the MPs will not let them make another mistake like Truss. So it won’t come to a member vote.

Sunak and Mordaunt will be the last two, and Sunak will win. Quiet, boring, stable.

Added Jeremy Hunt to poll options

Please add your votes

Nawaz Sharif!!:))):))):))):))) Seriously I feel Rishi has a decent chance seeing he just lost out to Lizz.

Boris already has 50 MPs support.

Rishi on 39

This is according to the Guido Fawkes tracker.

48% of Telegraph leaders want Boris back, Sunak is in second place with 24%, and Penny with 14%.

Candidates to succeed Liz Truss as the UK's prime minister have until 14:00 on Monday to gather the support of 100 MPs to run

The fast-tracked contest will see a new PM declared within a week, with the decision in the hands of Tory MPs and possibly Conservative Party members

Nobody has announced their intention to run yet - but Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt are seen as contenders

A comeback by Boris Johnson, who resigned in July following a series of scandals, is also a "real possibility", according to the founder of ConservativeHome

It’s an abomination that he is being mentioned. The Tories are global disgrace, the UK is a laughing stock right now.

With the number of changes as PM we have seen, a general election is necessary if we still are a democracy. You don’t get this drama even in south asia.

We have a bunch of children trying to run a country.

Rishi pulling ahead at the moment.

Ben Wallace is supposedly supporting Bojo though.

Enjoy the show man.

We are hopefully witnessing the end of the Tory party.

Ben Wallace indicates he will support Boris Johnson to be prime minister

Ben Wallace has ruled himself out of being the next prime minister - but has indicated he will support Boris Johnson.

He was not emphatic in his backing - rather saying he was "leaning" towards the former PM.

Asked if he was going to stand to be PM, the defence secretary said: "You have to really, really think it's the job for you.

"For me, I feel that I can add the best value in keeping people safe at defence by being the defence secretary.

"It's the job that I have been doing and it's the job I intend to stay doing.

"So I am not going to be standing for prime minister."

Mr Wallace said he needed to consider who would "recognise the very pressing security concerns" facing the UK, and who would take the decision to invest in defence.

He said that "without national security, there is no economic security".

The cabinet minister said he also recognised the "issue" of the mandate, and that the Tories were on their third PM since the 2019 election.

Because of that, he said: "At the moment I would lean towards Boris Johnson."

The defence secretary is the second cabinet minister to support Mr Johnson, after Business Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg.

He added that the party "have to focus" on who would bring unity, and who would be able to win the next election.

What the fish! Looks like the Tory guys have a ridiculously short memory, wasnt like BJ kicked out flat on his face not too long back? These guys have even lower IQs than the Trumpians!

Penny Mordaunt is the first candidate to officially launch their bid.

She came third in the last contest over the summer, securing strong support from her fellow MPs but just missing out on making it to the final two.

After backing Truss, she was appointed leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Privy Council - which meant she presided over the Accession Council for the new king.

And earlier this week, Mordaunt stepped in for Truss in the Commons to answer an urgent question from Labour.

She has so far received support from MPs John Lamont, Maria Miller, Bob Seely and Damian Collins.

If Johnson somehow worms and slobbers his way back into the PM position on the back of everything that has happened, it will be truly extraordinary, and (yet again for the UK) globally embarrassing.

I think it will be Sunak in the end.

Rishi Sunak has become the first to receive 100 public endorsements from Tory MPs - enough to meet the threshold for nominations in the leadership race.

The news came before a source close to Boris Johnson claimed he had also reached the threshold to reach the ballot, although this has yet to be verified.

The winner of the contest will replace Liz Truss as Britain's prime minister and become the country's third leader this year.

Party rules for the leadership contest mean all hopefuls need the backing of at least 100 Tory MPs by Monday afternoon to stay in the race.

This means the maximum number of people able to stand is three.

If three candidates get 100 backers, there will be a vote by MPs, with the winning two put forward to the party membership.

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson is back in the UK from his Caribbean holiday, while former finance minister Rishi Sunak is already leading the bookies' charts for who may become the next Conservative Party leader and UK PM to replace Liz Truss. But the third one in the race, Penny Mordaunt, party leader in the House of Commons, is ahead on one count: She already has a video out that she claims is "The Real Me".

She released the campaign video on her social media channels with a hashtag playing on her initials, '#PM4PM'. It shows the former defence minister opening a wicket gate, walking towards things considered intrinsic to British culture: Love of football, a game of pool at the neighborhood pub, and pouring pints of beer.

She bills herself as a common person from Portsmouth, "a military city with a proud history".

"I have worked in factories and pubs," she says, "I know about the cost of living."

Cost of living is at the heart of why Liz Truss had to resign earlier this week — making her the shortest-serving UK PM — as she failed to push through measures to control rising prices.

Penny Mordaunt, the 49-year-old who was once a reality TV star, briefly chronicles her rise from a middle-class community to "having a seat at the table" in the two-minute video.

Both her rivals are evidently more moneyed, which she refers to, rather obliquely, in the video: "There are many people who claim they know me... that they know you. But ask yourself this: Do they understand the life you live?"

Boris Johnson, who was ousted after a series of scandals just about two months ago, was yet to formally launch his bid for the Conservative Party leadership, following Liz Truss's resignation this week as she failed to push through measures to control rising prices.

Former finance minister Rishi Sunak, who was defeated by Liz Truss in the last leadership race, has got the more than a hundred nominations from MPs required for a contest. Two others — Ben Wallace and Jeremy Hunt — have dropped out.
unjtqn98

Mr Johnson is reported to have asked Mr Sunak to back down as he thinks only he can "save the party" in the elections due in 2024.

As for Penny Mordaunt, she came third behind Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak in the previous leadership election. She had then backed Liz Truss. Recently, as Liz Truss's star fell, Penny Mordaunt wrote a newspaper column saying “Britain needs stability, not a soap opera”.
The BBC calls her “the Brexiteer who is popular with the grassroots”. She was a prominent backer of Britain exiting the European Union in a 2016 referendum.

The party's MPs will vote on Monday, and two candidates will be put forward to the wider membership unless one pulls out. Result will be out on Friday, October 28.

Penny Mordaunt, party leader in the House of Commons, launched her campaign saying: "I've been encouraged by support from colleagues who want a fresh start, a united party and leadership in the national interest."

Opposition leader Keir Starmer of the Labour Party has ripped into the Conservative Party and called for a general election. "British people deserve so much better than this revolving door of chaos. We need a general election now," he said.

Rishi Sunak, Favourite To Be UK PM, Has Net Worth Of 730 Million Pounds

New Delhi:

Rishi Sunak is leading the race to become Britain's next prime minister which immediately brings back the spotlight on his wealth given the desperate state of economic affairs in the country.

With his wife, Akshata Murty, the daughter of Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy, Rishi Sunak has a combined fortune of £730 million which awarded him an unenviable spot on the Sunday Times 'Rich List'.

The bookies' favourite to win this dramatic race, Rishi Sunak was declared the 222nd richest person in Britain by the Sunday Times in May. This made him the first frontline politician to ever be included in the list of the UK's wealthiest people, the Guardian reported.

An estimation made earlier this year revealed the Rishi Sunak's wife was richer than Queen Elizabeth II, whose personal wealth was about 350 million pounds ($460 million), according to the 2021 Sunday Times Rich List.

Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty have consistently been under the scanner for their wealth. Earlier this year, Rishi Sunak spent nearly ₹ 3.8 crore on a luxurious swimming pool inside his £7 million mansion, just weeks ahead of the prime ministerial polls. He was also building a gym and tennis courts, the Daily Mail had reported.

Apart from his mansion, Rishi Sunak owns a portfolio of four properties spread across the world and valued at more than £15m, according to the Guardian.

Akshata Murty was also at the centre of a row involving her expensive crockery choices this year. She had served journalists tea in cups worth 38 pounds each. Social media deemed the choice a "tone deaf" one given the cost-of-living crisis in the country.

Ms Murty, 42, who is still an Indian citizen, has a net worth of about $1.2 billion owing to her stake in Infosys Ltd., founded by her father Narayana Murty, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

British Prime Minister Liz Truss on Thursday announced her resignation just six crisis-filled weeks after taking office, becoming the shortest-lived premier in UK history.

The Conservative party vowed a rapid election to have a new leader chosen by October 28. Truss admitted she "cannot deliver the mandate" on which she was elected, bowing to the inevitable after her right-wing platform of tax cuts disintegrated and as many Conservative MPs revolted.

Amazing. Boris still has the gravitas and charisma despite him breaking a Covid law, and is the first to 100 MPs - while the geezer was flying home!

Most people are ready to forgive him for having a drink when he shouldn't have; meanwhile Trojan truss exposed her true intentions and incompetence, and Sunak, well, he endorsed tax evasion - a far greater crime.

If Boris is PM by Friday next week, not only will it be the greatest comeback in all Western political history (including a possible Trump 2024 return), but I will be reading nafil.

Come on Boris! You can do this! You have the public mandate, and now a chance to fulfill the will of the people!

Sunak leads among Tory MPs but Johnson camp claims growing support

Rishi Sunak continues to forge ahead in the Conservative party leadership race, gathering the support of 128 MPs.
Boris Johnson is currently in second place, with his campaign claiming he has the backing of 100 MPs.
However, Mr Sunak's supporters raised doubts over the number of backers Mr Johnson has and they called for the former PM to show proof.
Penny Mordaunt is the only candidate to officially declare they are in the race, but she lags behind on support.
The BBC's Laura Kuenssberg said that Mr Sunak and Mr Johnson had met on Saturday evening, but she was not sure "if any conclusions or news was likely to come out of it tonight".
According to the BBC's running total of MPs who have gone on the record with support, Mr Sunak has 128 backers, to Mr Johnson's 53 and Ms Mordaunt's 23.
The voting intentions of only 203 out of 357 Conservative MPs are currently known and have been verified by the BBC, leaving many still to declare their interest.
The hopefuls have until 14:00 BST on Monday to declare they have got the support of 100 MPs, qualifying them for the next stage of the race.
It will then go to an online ballot of the Conservative party membership, with the result to be announced on Friday.
But if the party's MPs get behind just one candidate, we could have a new prime minister by Monday afternoon.
Polling suggests Mr Johnson would be favourite to win a members' vote.
Throughout Saturday, MPs were publicly declaring support for their favoured candidate.

International Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch earlier ruled herself out of the race to be the next prime minister, throwing her weight behind Mr Sunak.
Ms Badenoch - who made a big impact in the last Tory leadership contest - said in The Times that Mr Sunak was "the serious, honest leader we need".
She joined a growing list of Sunak backers, even though the ex-chancellor has yet to officially declare he is standing.
Mr Sunak's supporters include former chancellor and health secretary Sajid Javid, Security Minister Tom Tugendhat and former deputy prime minister Dominic Raab.
Pointing to the parliamentary probe facing Mr Johnson, Mr Raab told the BBC: "We cannot go backwards. We cannot have another episode of the Groundhog Day, of the soap opera of Partygate".
He said he was "very confident" Mr Sunak would stand, adding: "I think the critical issue here is going to be the economy. Rishi had the right plan in the summer and I think it is the right plan now."
Among supporters of Boris Johnson is former home secretary Priti Patel who said he could bring together a united team and lead the UK to a stronger and more prosperous future.
Business Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg and Transport Secretary Anne Marie Trevelyan have also thrown their weight behind the former PM.

Meanwhile Andrea Leadsom, former business secretary, said Ms Mordaunt was the unifying candidate; an experienced minister and a "robust Brexiteer".
Launching her campaign on Twitter on Friday, Ms Mordaunt said she would "unite our country, deliver our pledges and win the next [general election]".
Mordaunt backer Conservative MP Bob Seely said "I think we owe the country a collective responsibility to apologise" and said he believes Ms Mordaunt has the best chance of providing "unity and leadership" within the party.
Mr Johnson's potential bid to return to power comes just seven weeks after his final day in No 10.
His successor, Liz Truss, is the UK's shortest-serving prime minister, stepping down after 45 days in power.
She stood down on Thursday, after a series of humiliating U-turns forced on her by an adverse reaction to her tax policies in the financial markets.

Boris Johnson being the PM would be end of Sunak hopefully.. Boris is easily the best clown to head UK as a poodle to US establishment.

Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak have reportedly held talks late into the night - fuelling speculation they could strike a deal.

Neither the former prime minister nor the ex-chancellor have officially declared themselves in the race to succeed Liz Truss as prime minister.

If Johnson is re-elected, there is still the privileges committee vote to be held regarding his misleading the Commons.

Remember that sixty-two Tories resigned from his government over his lawbreaking and lying. If even two-thirds of them vote against him over privileges, his government will immediately collapse.

Then the Tories will be back in yet another leadership election and their disintegration will continue.

They should elect Sunak. He will bring stability to the markets and return some sense of normality to national politics. A few more Tories will keep their seats at the next GE too.

Seems that a dirty deal is going on and that Sunak might be crowned PM as early as tomorrow, with Johnson possibly back in as Foreign Secretary.

After Sunak helped push him out, I doubt he would want Johnson back. He already got sacked as FS and has an international reputation for negotiating in bad faith.

Reportedly, Johnson asked Mordant to stand down. Guess he needs her supporters to get to 100.

Mordant refused.

Guessing that Sunak has offered her Home Sec or Foreign Sec.

Sunak would be doing massive disservice to British Indians if he becomes a PM..
Ofcourse his personal ambition beats everything probably be the PM for 3-4 months.

Why would it be a disservice?

Been such a roller-coaster for the UK over the past few months. It's hard to keep track!

Breaking news as i type. Bpris Johnson pulls out of conservative leadership race, meaning Sunak will be confirmed as the PM tomorrow

BREAKING

Boris Johnson has announced that he will NOT stand for the Tory leadership, bringing his possible Prime Ministerial comeback bid to an end.

He is saying that despite having the support of the MPs required to run, he had come to the conclusion "this would simply not be the right thing to do" as "you can't govern effectively unless you have a united party in Parliament".

He says he had the backing of 102 MPs, the BBC's Political Editor Chris Mason reports.

Looks like its Rishi for sure.

This is a shambles. We need an election ASAP.

Just 4 weeks ago he was deemed not good enough by his party.

Not true. Everyone knows what happened there.

The right wing tory members didn't want to see a brown face lead the Tories.
Robert also mentioned this as well.

Lizz Truss is hands down the most thick and inept of all the leaders who's lead the UK government in parliment history.

The fact that she got more votes than Rishi in spite of how obvious it was about how unfit she was to lead speaks for itself.

You cant read people's minds and come up with their reasons for voting. And while I respect Roberts point of view - neither can he.

He was strongly rejected by his own party for two reasons imo and neither of them were his race ( of course this is just my opinion too)

1. The financial scandals involving his Indian wife.
2. His policies weren't seen as truly conservative.

Now in the space of a few years we have went from a PM 'elected' by the people, to a PM elected by the Tory members, and finally a PM elected by a small band of MPs.

What's next? A small Tory politburo that makes decisions on behalf of us all.

It's a complete and utter shambles.

I could agree with you if he was up against someone half decent, he was up against Liz Truss for goodness sake!

Anyone with half a brain could see Liz Truss' time as PM was going to end really badly.

Rishi's prediction of her ill judged economic policies were proven correct.

As for the 2 reasons you've given for him losing that leadership race, you're seriously clutching at straws.

The most important quality you want to see from someone who you're voting for to lead the party and the country is competency. All the other shortcomings can be forgiven (to an extent).

The signs of Liz Truss' incompetence and leadership were there for everyone to see well before the leadership race.

Lets cast our mind back to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, when she ill advised us folks to go out to Ukraine to fight the Russians before she was slammed for making such comments. The army had to come out and bluntly tell the nation not to follow her advice.

Eventually, she had to do a u turn as she's always done because of how dim she really is.

Rishi did a great job as chancellor when the UK was going through the pandemic. We need someone who knows what they're doing with the economy.

You are not a tory party member and are thinking on the lines of an ordinary voter.

But his own party thought differently.

These dimwits let her rise to the position of FM. She was not an unknown quantity. They've seen her make cringe speeches at conference, she told them exactly what she was going to do. Over and over again. In numerous debates and TV showdowns. Yet they still voted and booted Rishi to the kerb.

Its far too easy to play the race card here. They voted for her purely on economic reasons.

The whole credibility of the Tory party is in doubt and the only option is to go back to the people. All the people. Not a few members, and certainty not a few members of Parliament.

Sunak deserves a chance to set this right. While the Trumpian Tory grassroots might not like him, he is the most competent out there amongst the likes of Johnson, Truss and even Starmer!

Tory party is an embarrassing mess. 2 months of a leadership race only for the loser to be the winner 44 days later. Total farce, general election needed.

I think Sunak will become PM and steady things for a bit, then it will be General Election time in May 2023 which is not too far away really. This government can’t possibly hold until winter 2024/25 which is the deadline for when the next General Election is due. Parliament needs a refresh as does this Government. Go back to the people.

I can’t read minds, but I have talked to enough elderly white right wingers to know how a lot of them think. You know racism exists. Here is a British lake of it, full of Brexit-voting xenophobes.

Not truly Conservative? He nailed Truss’s fantasy economics at the hustings, accurately predicted what would happen. The members didn’t listen.

Anyway props to Sunak for overcoming that prejudice and becoming the first British Asian PM.

I would have thought that they will cling in as long as possible, so all those Red Wall candidates who never expected to win can keep drawing salary.

Boris was the first to roll out the Covid vaccine and lockdowns in the West, to call him lazy is intellectually dishonest.

Sunak's take on the economy is a quick jab, and wait till his economic policies will kick in, his supporters will be after his blood.

Truss's economic plan was sound. Save the unfunded taxes malarky because before her plan UK registered its largest deficit borrowing on record - her 45B plan was nothing compared to the 50B a month which is added to the national debt. She was however a terrible PM with the worst possible optics in history. Once a LD/Remainer, always a LD/Remainer.

Sunak will cause long economic damage the likes of this generation and previous generations have never seen, why, because he doesn't control the USD rate, and as the USD rate goes up, so to will Gilt Yields.

But hey, Boris haters would rather have a tax evader because he is the right colour.

You could be partly right but I think while it may have played a part, DeadlyVenom makes some good points on his policies and background which certainly would have played a role.

However, I am curious to see how their party and the public would respond to the first British Asian PM, especially when the going gets tough….

I would be surprised if he is standing in the general election, plus didn’t Boris hint that he would try and be leader in 2024? I don’t know the dynamics of that happening but it wouldn’t surprise me in the current environment

In a time of crisis naturally he had to lean on socialism, but the execution was poor. Many employers took advantage of furlough by applying on the behalf of working people and the grants available for business were subject to fraud. Sunak also artificially boosted the property market with the stamp duty relief so he is partly responsible for the mortgage crisis to a degree as well.

These are very strong and quite general claims, to the point where you need to prove them with better evidence IMO instead of just saying you spoke to a few old people and take my word for it.

Penny now has 90 MPs backing her.

This isn't over yet.

This could go down to the wire.

Come on Penny!

Not purely. A lot of them will never vote for a man of colour.

I don't think that was a major cause for his defeat.

The tory membership seems to want a fantasy low tax state - that's the only reason LT won.

I would rather have Penny over Rishi.

Rishi is a tax dodging opportunist.
