Why are English/Western breakfasts so poor?

I love the traditional Pakistani breakfast but sometimes its nice to eat something different esp for health reasons. I usually eat a lot of fruit.

On the odd occassion Ive had a full English breakfast but found it lame, not very tasty & very unhealthy. So I stick to Eggs with beans & cheese. Or cereal which is very boring.

This is a typical full English breakfast.

If you live outside of Asia, how do you find the local western or other breakfasts? Do you enjoy them, eat them a lot etc?

The first time I had eaten, this exactly same looking plate was on a holiday in Ibiza,Spain. The restaurant was run by an English granny for British tourists.
I enjoyed it along with a good serving of orange juice.
May not eat this everyday but here in Melbourne occasionally have this for brunch.sausages and eggs are a good combo.a bit bland for average desi taste buds though.

Im not sure if its because of my Asian pallette but I find them with little flavour. I have to add a little chilli to the beans. Did you also eat the black pudding?

What is a traditional typical Aussie breakfast?

I like beans, eggs and sausages. Esp if it's bacon sausage but I prefer American breakfast over it.

I don't mind this (halal version of course) once in awhile. Are there are any halal restaurants in England that serve an English breakfast?

Plenty, they use Turkey bacon and lamb/beef sausages instead. Of course no black pudding as it has pigs blood. They are filling but lack flavour.

What is a typical American breakfast? Please dont say pancakes, they are so lame.

Lol I thought black pudding was chocolate, good thing you've warned me cause I was gonna try it.

American breakfast is almost the same cause most people here are of British descent but pancakes and waffles are more popular, also breakfast burritos are getting very popular especially in the south due to the Hispanic influence. None of that can beat halwa puri of course.

Its disgusting imo, not sure why people enjoy it. Rice for breakfast doesnt fit right with me. Is breakfast a big deal in America or do they prefer brunch instead?

Check this guy out eating a full English in Leeds. Huge risk to his heart. James know this place at all?

I guess it's not bad once in awhile.

I don't think breakfast is a big deal in America, a lot of people either skip breakfast or eat leftovers from last night. Some people have a sweet tooth and prefer donuts and pancakes, I usually don't eat much for breakfast on the weekdays as I don't like the feeling of being stuffed in the morning.

EDIT: Just saw that guy eat mushrooms, :uak I've never liked mushrooms

I love a Full English, but to be fair a lot of this is based around the bacon, sausages and black pudding (ie the pork elements). If these were replaced with less succulent substitutes, the whole thing would probably be rather bland.

I do however feel that there is something to be said for scrambled/poached eggs, warm baked beans, a grilled tomato, and a piece of buttered toast (with brown sauce on the side!) — quick, very filling, and a healthy high-protein start to the day. Chicken sausages can be also surprisingly tasty if you want to whack a couple of those on there as well.

KingKhanWC yes I know around there, south side of the city around the River Aire and the Leeds Bridge.

That thing looks like coronary heart disease on a plate, the guy is jolly but also clearly obese and needs to lose some of that timber before it’s too late.

Love a halal full english. What a way to start the day. Only suitable for a lazy sunday and while on holiday though. Most of the halal places add some spice to the beans too. Quality stuff.

Personally am a big fan of western breakfast. Pancakes and French toast imo are better than Halwa Puri.

I once had the chance to eat a breakfast buffet which had breakfast cuisines from all over the world - like British, Mediterranean, Indian, etc.

I went straight for the British side eager to know what's so great about it. I just took the beans and hesitantly took one slice of bacon as I had never tasted it before but westerners always seem to rave about it. The beans tasted okay but the bacon slice honestly tasted like a very salty cracker. Don't know what's the hype about it. I thought I'll stick to my ghee masala dosas thanks:narine

Full English breakfast is awesome. Much prefer it to overrated Pakistani/desi breakfast.

Also, the major reason why you probably don’t like it is because you substituted bacon, sausage and black pudding with its inferior halal substitutes.

You take pork out of a full English breakfast and you no longer have a full English breakfast.

It is like grilling a chicken breast and considering it a steak.

I don’t eat pork of course so I haven’t had a proper, authentic English breakfast either and in spite of the fact that I love the halal version, there is no doubt that the real version is much better.

Moreover, anyone who hasn’t had the authentic version and only the halal one is not in a position to criticize it because they don’t even know what the authentic version is like.

Anyway, halal full English breakfast >>> Pakistani/desi breakfasts.

I don’t get to eat full English breakfast in Pakistan, but I usually have two fried eggs with 2 beef/chicken sausages for my breakfast.

My South Indian taste buds cannot enjoy anything without a little bit of spice in it. Sometime i wish i don’t care about the taste and eat just healthy. But i can’t.

Only once you eat the authentic English breakfast can you say the real version is much better.

Yeah bordering to contradiction. His main focus was just to write the opposite of others as usual but forgot to properly check the details.

More often than not, the substitutes are never as good as the real deal. As a result, I have no doubt in my mind that anyone who hasn’t had the authentic full English breakfast should not be criticizing it.

It is like if a white person makes a desi dish with less spices and masala and then claims that it is not very good. His assessment would not have any credibility.

What details, what contradictions? Let me repeat in simpler terms.

I love halal full English breakfast, but I know it cannot be as good as the authentic English breakfast, because the substitutes of real bacon, real pork sausage and real black pudding cannot be as good as the original.

As a result, anyone who has not had the authentic version should not be criticizing it because he doesn’t even know how good the authentic version is.

As I said in my previous post, it is like a white person cooking a desi dish with watered down spices and less masala, and then claims it is not very good.

Honestly what are the non halal components of a full English anyway?

Bacon like I said just tastes like a very salty cracker. I haven't eaten black pudding, but I've eaten dishes prepared with blood and frankly you're not missing out when not eating those. It's a bit of an exotic dish and not everyone's favourite like say bheja fry.

I haven't eaten proper pork meat though, my brother eats pork and often says it tastes delicious as it's a lot fattier than your average red meat and anything fatty generally tastes good. So a pork sausage might taste good, but pork prepared in other versions will probably taste much better than a bland pork sausage tbh.

English breakfast can be much healthier option than halwa Puri / channay bhatura/paratha etc.

Poached eggs, beans, Salami, garlic mushrooms and toast. That's my breakfast when I'm bothered about breakfast otherwise porridge with berries is the healthiest of breakfast.

My ideal occasional breakfast would be Nihari but I'd wanna go back to sleep afterwards.

I had a halal full breakfast at a cafe in Leeds once — there was no black pudding, turkey rashers instead of bacon, and vegetarian sausages instead of the usual pork bangers. Everything else was basically the same.

Now I did really enjoy it, but to be honest I would still prefer the “English version” — this could however just be a subjective/personal/cultural view based on what I am used to, and/or a bit of confirmation bias.

:)

I love my English/American breakfasts.
But I love my Desi breakfasts too... nihari, chola, halva puri.
Good thing is there are now quiet a few places here in London that do a Pakistani breakfast.

One of the best places for breakfast was Deny's in the states.
You can build your own breakfast and they have beef/turkey bacon and chicken sausages on the menu.
Never thought I'd enjoy it but have it full American way right a blueberry pancakes and the whole thing drizzled with Maple Syrup... yum

A halal British breaky can be as satisfying as any other. What you re not gonna get is keeme wale parate!! I have seen people in Pak having last nights remains or proper roti for breakfast that is probably not available anywhere else either:inzi2

Any food that you get from North Western Europe will be pretty bland. Their spices are salt and pepper. Just fry/BBQ/roast everything and add salt/pepper to it and eat it like a champ. For subcontinent people, it will not go down their throats so easily. I sometimes feel I am chewing on wood.

I can accept plenty of criticism of Western cuisine but nobody can tell me a full Irish/English (minus the beans which are rank) is anything other than godly.

Especially if hungover.

I assume the halal equivalent uses turkey or alternate sausages/bacon etc and I've no idea how good they taste, could explain this offensive thread.

I shall now claim Mexican mangoes > Pakistani in retaliation

Substitute the pork sausages for quorn you get yourself a decent healthy english breakfast minus the pudding of course.

Quorn with poached eggs, hash brown, beans, tomatoes and mushroom is worth trying.

I actually much prefer western breakfasts to desi ones, I have an aversion to eating heavy spice early in the morning. Full English has it's place, but I'm not actually that big a fan of heavy meat in the morning either, although since I usually only have a cup of tea in the morning, it's usually around lunch time I eat anyway.

Now what we call Pakistani breakfast, channa poori, is actually one of my favourite veg meals, but I just don't want to eat it before midday.

I rarely have it any more because it's too much faff, but one of my favourite breakfasts was simple boiled egg with soldiers which my mum used to make for us when we were kids. Lots of salt and pepper, a glass of fresh orange juice to wash it down, and you don't really need much else.

I know it might seem sacrilege, but take all the meat out of the full English, and I sometimes think it tastes better. Egg, hash browns, mushrooms, fried tomatoes, beans....that's pretty damn tasty in itself. I can take or leave the sausages or fake bacon.

Cannot take any breakfast seriously that has a sliced tomato that's heated up on grill as a cooked item.

Spice bag > English/Irish brekkie

British (especially English) food does suck, but I don't think you should drag in the rest of the West. France, Italy, Spain are 3 big examples of Western countries with a history of fantastic cuisine.

Never mind the guy has no clue.

By the way the Hash Browns at McDonald's are something else!!

Best Hash Browns by far

The most craziest breakfast spreads I've seen were in Turkey. And they were all halal.

We were staying at a good rated hotel in Cappadocia. And goodness me!

I forgot to actually eat anything when I first saw it. Took about 25 pics before touching anyting. There were more than a 100 items including organic local honey dripping straight from the hives, organic local butter and cheeses, organic and exotic local fruits, many different kinds of omelets and eggs and breads, and olives and jams, and milks, and fresh juices and teas and coffees and God knows whatnot.

Pakistani breakfast in my opinion is too heavy when you eat a paratha. And it becomes too gassy when you eat those chick peas (cholay), same with beans in the western breakfast. Hate eating it. Turns you into a windmill for the rest of day.

Cant beat the MCD hashbrown, ask them to put it in the egg and cheese snack wrap next time, beautiful. :))

Back to the point english breakfast when cooked right is defo up there with the desi breakfast.Especially when you make it yourself you can add your spice, bit of fried onions or peppers into the beans.

Well if you become muslim then you will have to stop eating the "English version"; then you will probably come up with creative ways to make the "Halal version" as delicious as "English version" while still adhering to halal rules :)

Good call.
There are few Turkish restaurants in north london that do an authentic breakfast.
Absolutely awesome!!

It's amazing how they can collect together a bunch of natural products and combine them to make a very satisfying, but not too greasy breakfast. I am very favourable to Mediterranean diet in general, it's similar in Italy. But I guess the food goes with the climate, that stuff tastes great at an outdoor restaurant. So maybe the full English is kind of suited to the weather here. :91:

I think first we need to cancel those fraud breakfasts that have natural uncooked items or a collection of separate dishes and calling them breakfasts. I mean if you're going to give me some almonds, some fruits, a bulls eye and some juice and going to tell me this is a breakfast, you're not fooling me.

Desi breakfasts are actually proper dishes cooked and have their own distinct identity - be it the halwa puri, cholay puri, dosa or the hopper. I'm not hating on western breakfasts here as I'd consider items like the french toast, pancakes as proper breakfast dishes too. But I'm calling b s on assembling an assortment of either natural items like nuts, cream, cheese, milk or separate dishes like eggs, sausage and calling them a breakfast. Maybe breakfast cuisine is the better word.

I love a good English breakfast. Just don't like the black pudding, so I usually ask them to leave it out.
It is quite bland for my Indian tastebuds in most places in the UK, so I always add some tabasco, salt and pepper.
I don't like the combination of halwa and puri. Always prefer eating the puri with channey and the halwa separately.

Yes, nice area of Leeds.

The breakfast he's eating would be enough for 3 people imo! Its not just the breakfast but he eats so much unhealthy food its defo a risk to his health. Nice , funny chap but watching him stuff his face is not always a nice sight.

Do you have egg muffins with it? I agree the Hash browns are decent but generally Maccies tastes like cardboard, their eggs dont even taste like real eggs.

So what is everybody's day to day desi breakfast? esp. People who were ranting about english breakfast being too bland for their palette.

I can't see myself having parathas and cholay everyday. Usually it is a cup of coffee with a toast and some fruit or maybe cereal.

Just the hash browns :)

I haven't a mackies in over a year but if I go for the breakfast there it's 2 to 3 hash browns and coffee for me...

Eggs from a carton

Two eggs scrambled in a squirt of olive oil with a whole tomatoe sliced snd seasoned on the side.
I probably have this twice a week for breakfast.

I try and stay off carbs and red meat during the week and then eat what I like (within reason) on a Saturday night.

Firstly no country has tea like we do. Pakistani chai is far superiour to English tea, which imo isnt tea at all. Its hot water with milk tipped on top.

I usually have a large cheese omlette made with onions, chillis in a Pakistani style or boiled eggs(which belong to all nations) Along with a large cup of chai. On occasions a thin, flaky paratha to go with it. + some Pakistani mangoes if in season.

Halalnivore Beef Sausages (lovely flavour, not bland)
Fried Eggs
Hash Browns
Beans
Orange Juice
Tea

Breakfast of champions

In Scotland they eat a thing called Haggis. I know some who eat this for breakfast, they believe its a traditional part of a Scottish breakfast, not sure if this is true but very interesting piece of food.

Its sheeps, heart, liver, lungs and other parts wrapped into a stomoch lining of some animal. It smells rank but Ive been told it tastes great. Give it a go bro. :inzi

Sounds nasty so I'm gonna pass on that but tbf there's a Pakistani dish like that that combines goat brain and kidneys or something, I don't exactly remember the name.

Quality of ingredients matters a lot more in Western food as spices are minimal whereas desi food you can compensate using cheap meats and ingredients since the spices can be overpowering. For this reason Western/fast food in Asia is mostly terrible due to poor quality meats.

My favourite Western breakfast item is poached eggs benedict with salmon. Breakfast burritos (Tex-Mex rather than Mexican) are pretty nice too.

For me it is Aaloo Paratha with lassi and makhan.. :inzi

Well it is is pretty similar to the above without the beans.. And also Vegemite and a toast.
A Toasted Ham Sandwich with Coffee is pretty common is Melbourne, especially on Chilly mornings and on your way to work.

How English are you King Khan?:root

Do you enjoy the pie mash and jellied eels?:inzi

Don’t make the matter look more complicated by writing long essays. You simply can not say one food is better than other when you even haven’t eaten it, as simple as that.

I don’t need to eat authentic English breakfast to acknowledge that it must be better than the halal version, because the pork elements of the English breakfast are crucial to the experience.

You simply cannot replace them with Turkey, chicken or beef.

Similarly, a non-beef eater should have no problem acknowledging that a beef steak is far better than a so-called chicken steak, since a steak is meant to be beef, just like bacon is meant to be pork.

There is nothing complicated about my essay. You are just biased against pork and cannot accept it that it is probably incredible especially in bacon and sausage form.

You can't compare beef steaks with chicken or lamb steaks to Beef, turkey or chicken sausages to port sausages simply because one is a processed food which is often made with bits of left over meat (unless it's organic and from the butchers)

Haggis is yum. Yes it does sound quite jolting on paper, but it tastes great.

Anyone had a proper Iranian breakfast?
Consists of a whole lamb head... skull with eyes, cheek, brain, tongue all in tacked. It's slow cooked and extremely tender but there's no chilli or masala so extremely Lambi

Sounds like something from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

I can admit the grilled tomato is disgusting. Love tomato but it needs to be in a bun or sandwich to counter the softness.

Ideal fry is

Sausages
Fried/scrambled egg
Mushrooms
White pudding
Bacon (still soft)
Couple slices of buttered toast

Hash browns need to be on there, can give or take the toast to be honest. Also need a nice tall glass of orange juice to go with that.

Ah man omelettes with onions and chillies are awesome! I've made them quite a bit and love it.

Another nice breakfast is Dim Sum dipped in chilli oil and a hot bowl of conjee!!

McDs brekkie. 2 Hash browns, Egg McMuffin with Cheese, and OJ.

Otherwise it's full on English without the swine.

Nothing hits the spot like a greesy fry up breakfast after the summer/rave festivals.

My dad used to put that in a sandwich when it was cold, and tell you what, it still hits the spot when I have it now and again.

I make it in a small bun too! But only I can tolerate the chillies and spice, my wife refuses to go anywhere near it :))
