Why do England select batsmen who have mediocre averages in First-Class cricket?

It's extremely awkward that England has so many players with healthy FC averages yet they persist with likes of Vince,Stoneman,Malan who all have mediocre FC averages and are not cut out for test cricket IMO


Can someone please explain?

Potential. Malan has shown potential and is a player of top class. However, I would agree - players grinding it out in the First Class tournament need to be given a chance, they usually prove their ability.

Well quiet a few of the batsmen we’ve selected have sub 40 domestic averages so we’re not very different.

Pakistan do the same as they have a benchmark of 30 and just over.

Indians average more in the high 40's and 50's.

They have gone the other way before and picked players like ballance who have good domestic averages and they have failed as well.

Lack of temperament and patients is problem with most county batsmen when it comes to step up.

They have a similar problem in that in their domestic system nobody is really banging down the door. They've tried a number of different batsmen in different positions. They're just relying on Stoneman, Malan etc to hit some form until somebody from domestics puts their hand up to replace them

Because they have no one else. James Taylor retired due to heart problems. Ballance looked awful despite raining in the runs.

They really don't have many good batsmen who aren't already in the team e.g. cook, Root, Bairstow.

Malan and Stoneman are dodgy selections late 20s averaging sub 40 in FC and your expecting them to be good international cricket.
Root was different young players can improve but older players are unlikely to be better than what they've shown in domestic.
It's better to select batsmen in the early 20s and look to improve them they won't do worse than the ones selected.
