Just a thought that popped into my head but it has happened several times over the years.

Since the first ODI WC in 1975 - it was played every 4 years until 1987. Then suddenly there was a 5 years gap before the 1992 WC was played. Then the 1996 WC was 4 years later but then the 1999 WC happened only 3 years later!

It has reverted to a 4 year cycle ever since.

Similarly - the CT was first played in 1998 and has been played on a 2 year cycle until 2006. Then there was a 3 year gap until the next one was played in 2009. Now I seem to recall that the 2009 CT was supposed to be played in 2008 in Pakistan but was postponed for a year and played in SAF due to security issues. However, it suddenly then reverted to a 4 year cycle after that.

The World T20's are even more bizzare lol

The inaugural WorldT20 was played in 2007 and the next one was played 2 years later in 2009 but then another one was held only a year later in 2010! It seemed to revert back to a 2 year cycle but then I am hearing now that there will be no World T20 in 2018 :(

What is the cause for these changes? :13:

From what I know, CT was facing an existential crisis as it was no different from the WC. There was not much interest in CT after 2009 and ICC decided to have one final tournament in 2013 just to shut it off and have a Test Championship in place. Once the Test Championship didn't go ahead, they played CT again in 2017 as ODI cricket was back in demand (Earlier there were thoughts of completely eradicating ODIs as it didn't attract much viewers).

T20s were played in 2010 instead of 2011 because the ICC wanted to have 1 World event each year. 2011 was having the WC and due to high success of WT20, they decided to have it in 2010 instead of waiting till 2012. Now, ICC is again contemplating whether to have a WT20 every 2 years or 4 years, hence there are doubts over the WT20 2018.

Basically, its just ICC who are trying to get their scheduling right.

I think 2010 WorldT20 was played in that year because next year in 2011 we had the regular world cup scheduled. But I’m always astonished why the world cup was played in 1992 instead of 1991. And then 1999 one too.

The five year gap between 1987 and 1992 was because of seasons.

England's cricket season is during the middle of the year. Most of the Asian countries have quite an extensive period of the year where they can play cricket (plus have access to all the stadium).

Australia can only play cricket from around October to the end of March.

I think for WC to be held in 1999, the Sydney Olympics of 2000 might have played its part.

No idea but there should be an ICC event every year.

For example:

2015 World Cup
2016 World T20
2017 ICC Champions Trophy
2018 ICC Test Championship
2019 World Cup

I am sorry but I don’t understand? :13:

Why does the English cricket season have anything to do with it?

Have read this somewhere else as well but couldn’t they have played in Feb-Mar 1991?

What a bizarre thought!

It is strange that ICC haven't followed any specific pattern for any world tournament. World Cup in theory was understood to be every 4 years but again that hasn't been the case as well.

2016 World T20
2017 ICC Champions Trophy

I agree this would be awesome!

It would be benefit the lesser countries more as they don't get to play as often as the Big 3.

Why does the English cricket season have anything to do with it?

First three world cups were held in England so there was a steady four year gap. Asia held the next one in October-November.

Australia wasn't in a position to host in October-November so had to push it back a few months.

Have read this somewhere else as well but couldn’t they have played in Feb-Mar 1991?

Then it would have only been a 3 and a half year gap.

It has been sorted out now. The World Cup and World T20 will be held every four years, with the next tournaments being in 2019 for the former and 2020 for the latter. The test championship will be held in two year cycles starting in 2021, I believe.

There is an Asia cup next year at least, right? Would be disappointing if no major tournament takes place.

Why can't the the World T20 be played every 2 years.

Yes there is.

Hopefully it will not be a rubbish T20 tournament like last time.

Why couldn't Australia host in October - November?

Stadiums only become available in October and I imagine teams would actually want warm up matches, plus Australia ourselves would want some time before the start of the season so our players wouldn't go straight until world cup having played no cricket.

And then it intervenes with the test series if its held back a couple of months.
