Why is Pakistan so desperate to hire Mickey Arthur?

There are local and many foreign coaches out there. ECB, CA and SA have coaches each at their domestic cricket.

Mickey Arthur obviously did not want to throw away his Derbyshire contract because after 6 months elections are taking place in Pakistan which means there will again be a change at PCB and its team management.

PCB ended up hiring a remote online coach.

Whats so special about mickey arthur that we had to hire him this badly?

Ok, which realistically available foreign coaches are out there that a) the PCB can afford b) Would want to come to Pakistan at this time.

What are the options? Please kindly list these with their merits.
 
My dilemma is why not a local coach is it compulsory to have a foreign coach who was sacked by the PCB.

Also MA won’t leave his derbyshire contract due to large sum of money he or PCB will have to payout due to his contract clause

I still think this is all a bad dream as i will wake up thinking which board would hire online/consultant who will speak to the team face to face 7 months out of 12.

Even if its for six months. Pcb is not some club. Its an international board and comes amongst the top 8 boards of world cricket. Any foreign coach out there would do anything to get a label of foreign team coaching with pcb as it improves your resume as a coach.

Pcb hiring of the team management was illegal in the first place
 
Sethi was the chairman when Mickey won the CT in 2017. It is obvious that he rates him very highly because of that and does not care, or remember, or understand how much the results declined by the end of his tenure.

Pakistan lost 32 of its last 40 ODIs under Mickey including a 8 consecutive losing streak in ODIs. They also lost consecutive home series in UAE.

Mickey offered himself to both ECB & NZC after getting sacked by PCB in 2019 & got rejected by both only to end up in SL.

He also doesn’t get any offers from IPL & PSL. He is not rated as a coach especially after the scandalous tenure with Australia.

I am quite disappointed with Sethi’s decision-making this time around. He has made a few absurd calls and this one is by far the worse. This whole arrangement is a recipe for disaster and it will not last long.

If Mickey was not willing to terminate his contract with Derbyshire then PCB should have explored other options. This reeks of desperation and is a totally absurd and impractical decision.
 
It would take a miracle for this appointment and position to end up as a success.

I bet this ends up being a long thread because it is going to be very bumpable.

Spot on.

Mickey has such a terrible record.

He also failed as the Karachi Kings coach. After leaving the PCB, he again had a bad period as SL coach.

Why are we, rather Sethi, desperate to hire him, is beyond me.

They look at him as a magic pill that will cover their own incompetence. Isn't this obvious to you?
 
Sethi and his masters want to recreate purana Pakistan. Don't we all know?
 
PCB always lives in nostalgia. That's the reason they always replace young players with failed cricketers who were dropped from the team in the first place. Mickey Arthur is a similar fantasy for PCB. Hoping that bringing him back will get pakistan to 2017. May be Malik will be back too considering Sarfraz is back. Amir's return in inevitable as well. It will be good to take Pakistan back 5 years to prove Ramiz's tenure was all bad and a disaster.
 
Women's IPL is currently hiring staff urgently. Auction is coming up and teams need full coaching staff in place well before the date. 5 teams will hire 10-15 top available coaching staff from all over the world. Negotiations must be going on furiously in backrooms. PCB must not have lot of options remaining.

Mickey is just cashing in at right time.
 
No other big name white coach would agree to coach Pakistan full time maybe.

They should go for a domestic coach from Shield/Plunkett Shield instead.

I dont believe thats the case.

Its just that PCB is just looking at some high profile names who are in high demand across leagues so unless the compensation matches all those sums then its not going to be straightforward and PCB is not ready to scout outside that. There must be many quality coaches who will take the role without thinking twice as it would naturally elevate their status in the cricket coaching circuit immediately, its just that PCB is too focused on few names.

Most top teams now a days just go with their own home grown coaches from their domestic circuit while rest of the coaches who had established their names in the last decade mostly prefer leagues as it gives them good financial stability as well as time.

So the dynamics of the coaching careers are much different now then they were a decade or two ago so PCB needs to plan accordingly.

Well put.

Never understood the fascination with Mickey and this time around going so far to get him that they are allowing him to work remotely so that he can keep his Derbyshire contract is just absurd. Grant Bradburn might have to do most of the work as he will actually with with the team as assistant coach if the rumours are true.

I agree that looking at some upcoming performing coaches in county and shield would have been the way to go, have said it previously myself as well. However, PCB just wanted to minimize the efforts I believe.

Why do you think that is Misbah ? Your antics on the Cricket Committee in 2019 has a part to play. You gave assurances that Mickey would stay on before pushing him out the door, and taking his job in a clear conflict of interest.

Why would any respected foreign coach take PCB's words with any credibility ? I'm not surprised therefore Mickey has exploited the situation in his interests - he knows whatever happens with Pakistan he still has the Derbyshire job.

It was also a slap to our cricket system when you were appointed coach in 2019 with no coaching experience whatsoever, not even that of a school team.

The recently concluded QEA trophy had Nixon and some other Joe as coaches why not get one of them
 
Nixon is a very good coach ..pak should have offered him the role..someone said he was the coach in some QEA team.

Surely pakistan can do better than having a coach whos not gonna be actually with the team 6 months of the year
 
People who have issues with the online coach probably had no issues with one man being the chief selector, head coach and batting coach. They probably also praised the PCB paying $100k to Hayden for his consultation for 2 weeks work
 
Sethi won't have made this decision.

He's relying on others around him to make the decisions.
 
It’s like Mickey can’t leave his wife (that county team he coaches) and PCB is ok being his side chick.

Spot on -- excellent post.
Mickey is at best an average coach, but a decent human being who deserved better than the way he was treated in 2019 by Wasim Khan et al.

In a broader context, Pakistan and it's fans should move away from the "cult of the messiah" -- if only we had "X" as our coach, all would be well.

The lack of a suitable structure from grassroots to first class cricket is not going to be addressed by having a star name as coach or selector.

The current set up will fail, but it would have failed if Mickey were a fulltime appointment.
The situation cries out for a long term plan, led by a Pakistani version of Andrew Strauss, that looks at the game as a whole and institutes an holistic three year plan.

Almost certainly will never happen.....

Others like Shakeel Shaikh? If that is the case then again its on Sethi on listen to someone like Shakeel Shaikh, SS may have done a lot for cricket locally and the structure he has come up with has merits, but the choice of personnel so far has been appalling.

Big contract with Derbyshire for several years.

If he walked away from it, he'd have to pay a six figure sum in compensation to Derbyshire.
 
The fact that he was fired by all National teams he worked with and is now the coach of a lower tiered county team tells us all we need to know about Mickey Arthur. His only claim to fame in 1 CT win, which sorry to say is not equivalent to any WC win or anything. And to think that PCB is desperate to get this guy and is willing to compromise on anything to get him onboard is mind-boggling.

Online coaching - really? Are our cricketers playing a physical sport or prepping up for their SATs somewhere? Would have preferred anybody - including local coaches over this!

PCB again is making a joke of itself in the cricketing world.

On tracks at R Premadasa, where 2 days before the Ind-Pak game, Theekshana took 3 wickets, Kuldeep took a 5 for in the India-Pak game, today Wellalage and Asalanka took 9 wickets between them, Pakistan chose to field a side with 4 pacers and one Part time spinner.

Secondly, it is a known fact that chasing under lights in SL is always a little tougher, yet they choose to field.

Other things aside, the above two points themselves raise serious questions on Pakistani think tank, of which Mickey Arthur is a part. Add to that Arthur was coaching the Sri Lankan team for a good time, so he must be having a good idea of how the tracks here behave, yet, at least on the face of it, this guy looks clueless.

Truth is that Arthur is a mediocre coach and I cannot understand why Pakistan were dying to have him. He is a failed coach with no significant achievements, except for that 2017 CT.

Pakistan struggled to develop spinners during Mickey Arthur's previous tenure from 2016 to 2019 as well. We had the weakest spinners going into the 2019 ODI WC.
 
It wasn't the best decision to hire someone who was partially available to be with the team. PCB should consider someone who would be with the team during all the matches.
 
A fair question was asked by @Major long time ago but no one took him seriously as usual but now he has the final laugh.
 
Can’t believe Sethi went on his knees and begged him to come back, you cannot be fully committed to Pakistan cricket if you’re coaching in county cricket.
 
He has definitely looked softer this time. The Mickey from 2016-2019 would tell it as it is in the press conferences and interviews.

This time Mickey looks content to get a paycheck
 
He's not as passionate as he used to be. Definitely feels like he's going through the motions as a coach and I'm not sure why.

Perhaps he didn't get the squad he wanted and just followed Babar?

"The chairman before this one, it was his stubbornness, I want him at any cost, even if he is not available. Then why do you need him? Who will ask him now?.... Now tell me, is he director of cricket for the Pakistan cricket team or for Pakistan Cricket? Director of what? Will anyone explain to me?"
 
I concur with Wasim Akram. I also didn't understand the concept of making a director designation. Then, what is the purpose of a head coach?

I think Mickey's CT 2017 success is the primary reason.

Other than that, I see no other reason.
 
PCB hire a failure if it goes right then they look great, goes bad and they have a convenient excuse

Mickey probably knew that anything could happen at the World Cup and he kept the cushion of his contract at Derbyshire which was a wise move by him.

I'd be very surprised if he is asked to continue after the World Cup in his role.
 
Mickey is hands down the best new-age 21st century visionary coach who is an expert at Microsoft Teams and Zoom. He is also the only coach in the world who will ever ask for Dil Dil Pakistan to be played in India - can you think of any greater motivator or more patriotic coach?

Performances be damned, it’s absolutely paramount to back your team and blame everything around - Mickey understands that and after all, players are a byproduct of their environment!

Mickey is an absolute genius in relationship management - you can see that in how over the years despite team failures he has landed the job yet again. Mickey is also a top notch multi-tasker- do you know of any other coach in the universe who can coach two professional cricket teams in the world with one being a top international one?

Mickey is a symbol of our humanness- he makes a great case study in how we are all fallible, prone to errors, how dumb and unlearning we can be as humans even after repeated failures, yet we must continue to do the same things over and over again and hope one day the sun will shine on us. Hope is eternal and in Mickey we believe.

I’m shocked you can even think of looking past such a pedigreed and capable coach as Mickey.
 
They are simpletons. They think he alone was the reason for the CT17 win so they keep going back to him.

Same as the posters on here who want Sarfraz back as captain, but forget how awful we were across ODIs before and after CT17, and his lackluster fitness for a keeper, lazy attitude and tailender performances were a part of it.

They cherry pick one achievement and then extrapolate it to massive proportions.
 
Fakhar e alam spoke about some of his recent failures with Sri Lanka, then his Derbyshire side being one of the worst performing teams in the second division, failed with Pakistan too in his hybrid position. Mickey works well with someone like Sarfaraz, but ever since I’ve seen him rejoin the team there’s no connection with the players. Seems disconnected sat at the dug out, with no interaction with players. Definitely got to be rid of and get a full time director/coach for Pakistan.

local coaches like India does.

There are gems like Abdul Rehman and the other day they were talking on Pavilion about some fielding coach in Peshawar whom Rizwan and ifti train with.

Local coaches know about Subcontinent conditions. India moved away from foreign coaches towards local and look at them play cricket.

Our guys dont even speak or understand English.

But its not only coaches job here, but you need a whole management team where PCB supports a fitness regime and players are forced to follow it and the selectors and everyone involved make sure to follow the selection criteria base on that

I'd probably go with Moin Khan as next head coach.

Has an excellent rapport with most players, done excellent work throughout his time at Quetta Gladiators and knows how to implement an aggressive brand of cricket

Mickey is also not willing to work in Pakistan all year. This is why he refused to leave his position as Derbyshire head coach.
 
I want to ask PCB the following but I don’t think I will get a straight answer:

What is Mickey’s job description compared to Grant Bradburn’s? Where they do they overlap and where do they converge.

When Mickey is in the Pakistan dressing room once in a blue moon, what does he do and what Grant do?

Who does what when both are physically present in the dressing room?

Yeah but I don't think its to do with the physical security side of things, mainly due to the lack of job security.

The problem is some of our egoistic ex-players take offence if they are offered anything less than a national team position and feel slighted if you suggest they coach the U19s. Nor do they bother to develop their coaching skills.

Waqar had no coaching background but enjoyed multiple stints as Pakistan head and bowling coach. Every time he was sacked he'd return to the commentary box instead of seeking out coaching opportunities.

Misbah had zero coaching experience when he was appointed Pakistan coach in 2019.

Saqlain in fairness had international bowling coach experience but had no qualifications to become a head coach.

Being a successful player and a successful coach require different skillsets.

The problem is some of our egoistic ex-players take offence if they are offered anything less than a national team position and feel slighted if you suggest they coach the U19s. Nor do they bother to develop their coaching skills.

Waqar had no coaching background but enjoyed multiple stints as Pakistan head and bowling coach. Every time he was sacked he'd return to the commentary box instead of seeking out coaching opportunities.

Misbah had zero coaching experience when he was appointed Pakistan coach in 2019.

Saqlain in fairness had international bowling coach experience but had no qualifications to become a head coach.

Being a successful player and a successful coach require different skillsets.

Yes, that's why Inzamam-ul-Haq mentioned that the PCB doesn't provide proper exposure to our former players as coaches.

If they are reluctant to take on duties in the domestic circuit, that's another debate about their intentions to serve the country at any level.

Wasim Akram has already raised these questions. These are the questions that the PCB should address in a statement.

Exactly as I was saying in the Morne Morkel thread. Being a successful player is largely a technical skills whereas coaching is largely analytical.

But unfortunately PCB have always struggled to distinguish between the two which is why they've always eyed the big names.
