Everyone going on and on about the trio i.e. Mohd Amir, Asif and Salman Butt these days but it is so disgraceful that not a single person in the media, PCB and us fans have even raised a voice for Danish Kaneria who has been abandoned by everyone even though he had a very strong case.

Cricket Expert summed up the hypocricy and double standards of the British Court System in the following post 11 in this thread

Is it because Danish Kaneria was from a Minority Community that he was ignored by his countrymen? His troubles are far from over as the ECB is going out in forcing the courts to seize, sell his properties and his bank accounts to recover legal costs of $300,000 plus.

I cannot believe there has been no voice for him at all. Just because he was a garbage bowler does not justify such treatment.
 
Cairns was being trialed for perjury, not match fixing.
 
I wouldn't say Kaneria was garbage bowler. Maybe this is how all fixers/spot fixers should be treated?
 
Sadly as you mentioned – it's just because he wasn't good enough.

Only Mohammad Amir is due to his age at the time he committed the crime.

Majority of people do not want Butt or even Asif back even though they would be an improvement compared to some of the players we have now.

Age is just a pretext and mendacity why people don't want Salman Butt or Mohammad Asif back in the side - it's more like their hypocrisy why they don't want the other two.

Most of the times Mohammad Amir's fans defend him by saying:

"But Mohammad Amir was young at the time he committed the sin!"

I'm exhausted after having to listen to this excuse for so many times now, Mohammad Amir was mature enough to represent Pakistan at that time and he surely knew the consequences.

I'm not against Mohammad Amir playing in the leagues and so because he has all the rights to earn his livelihood but he does not deserves to play for Pakistan ever again.

However, if Mohammad Amir does ever make a comeback and picks up wickets, I would cheer for him rather than try to hide in a corner!

If it was proven that Amir had fixed a match (lost a match on purpose) I would be on the same boat as you.

However it was spot fixing. I am not trying to trivialize the matter but it was a couple of no-balls in a match where he was out best bowler and took heaps of wickets if I recall correctly.

Yes it was wrong, but he served his time and his ban.

His age is not the only thing though.

It was also that he was a relatively new player in the team. From his testimony Salman Butt made it seem like if Amir did not bowl a no ball Amir would be in his bad graces.

Therefore the captain had "undue influence" over amir.

Wikipedia definition of undue influence:

"In jurisprudence, undue influence is an equitable doctrine that involves one person taking advantage of a position of power over another person. This inequity in power between the parties can vitiate one party's consent as they are unable to freely exercise their independent will."

I am not a lawyer so I dont know if this applies to Amir's case, but the logic should be the same.

Salman Butt had influence of Amir because of his age and the fact that he was relatively new to a Pakistani team who discards junior players like no tomorrow. So it is feasible to believe he thought his place in the team was in danger.

Ofcourse it does, atleast partially. He has a much stronger case than the Trio but has sadly been treated like a waste paper basket past his expiry date. Disgraceful treatment.

Yes, but the double standards are so striking. Only the testimony of a convicted fixer was used to ban him for life, the police had no evidence against him and even cleared him but it was considered sufficient to convict him and ban him for life whereas there was a Skype Video Recording, so many eye witnesses against Cairns but ruled insufficient to charge him.
 
Well, if Cairns was currently playing, he would be subjected to ICC's regulations and probably be handed some sort of a ban. Kaneria's treatment vs that of the trio is a valid comparison - and a combo of factors such as discrimination, severity of the offence, and a lack of performance may be at work.

Not same forum so you can't compare the evidence. But the Danish has had that evidence considered by multiple other courts with no change to the result.

The ECB has gone out of its way to use Westfield's testimony as their primary evidence and the ECB is only saving face by sticking to their original stance, there is no way in hell will they ever admit they made a mistake. Fact is that Kaneria at the very least was cleared by the police but Westfield was charged.

There is very reasonable belief that Kaneria became a victim of ECB's ego and refusal to admit they made a mistake rather than a legitimate spot fixing conviction. Even now the ECB is acting petty by going after his remaining financial resources.

I'm not a Muslim, and I certainly don't respect Kaneria's faith any less than yours.

Nobody stands up for Kaneria because his guilt was much worse than the other three. He fixed for ages, he preyed upon vulnerable young players to do so and the evidence was overwhelming. And he fixed for criminals, not a newspaper.

That is why his ban is a life ban. And the only reason why he is not in jail is because the English Director of Public Prosecutions judged it was a waste of money to lock him up when we could just kick him out instead.

I have a lot of sympathy for Amir (due to his age), Asif (who took no money) and even a little for Butt (who has served his punishment for a bad offence but is now being persecuted by double jeopardy).

I have no sympathy for Kaneria. And why would we English give preferential treatment to Muslims over Hindus?

You've said it yourself that the court evidence isn't public so why assume that every single court he has come up against is biased against him?

The question is if he knows he is fighting a losing battle which has drained him financially, why is he still continuing to maintain his innocence and still try every Avenue to reverse his conviction.

The fact that the ecb has still not made the evidence public casts reasonable doubt. What do they have to hide, they should just make it public.

Kaneria has been demanding, in fact begging the ecb to hold a public trial and to release the evidence in public.

Salman Butt eventually confessed when he exhausted all his legal avenues and could no longer afford to fight legal battles any more.

Kaneria is still fighting his losing battle inspite of not having a single penny any more.

This is irrelevant, they found him guilty as they are entitled to do and that verdict has been upheld in appeal courts.

He is past his expiry date and his offences are much worse than the trio's, like some others have already mentioned. Don't make him a victim, he isn't one.

The PCB only helped Amir, understandably due to his age. Asif and Butt were not given any such help during their years in the wilderness and if Kaneria's life-ban is the issue, go and argue with the English courts. Why should the PCB get involved in this?

And do you have proof of his so called offences being worse than the trio, all that we know is one man's testimony and word against the other.

Him being past his expiry date does not justify him being treated like crap which is the classical Pakistani mentality as Ajmal is finding out himself now.

The PCB should get involved in this as Kaneria's case is much better than the Trio's and he was a Pakistani Cricket who served Pakistan well, has the highest no of wickets in our test history for a leg spinner.

I don't but the courts do. Are you saying that the English courts are corrupt? Good that you brought up Ajmal. You can also bring Yousuf into the conversation as proof that the PCB doesn't really care about players who don't have anything left to offer.

This is something where the BCCI is much, much better. Even the most mediocre of players get treated by lejunds by the Indian board.

It was Perjury about Match Fixing. Same thing, only reason they won't try him for Match fixing is because ICL was unsanctioned tournament and he is already retired. Banning him was of no use.

Kaneria was a mediocre bowler even in his prime back in 05/06. He was purely a stop-gap before Ajmal's and Babar's burst onto the scene, after the twin retirements of Mushy/ Saqi

it was the judge, he made it very difficult for Cairns to be convicted. He only considered testimony of 3 of them he cast doubts on Lou Vincent, which also affected the credibility of his ex wife. And then set the condition that you can't convict on sole testimony of Brendon Maccullum. Judge said you must consider 2 of 3 as truthful. That made it very difficult to convict with 10-2 majority as opposed to simple 5-7 majority. But Danish was convicted on a single testimony that too of the offender.
The bias is obvious. It is shameful how our ex player and fans wont support our own players, even when they have done jail and payed the penalty.
 
There is some conflation here. Danish was banned by a sporting body and the courts upheld the ban observing the principle that they don't intervene in sporting matters unless there is manifest injustice.

It's completely different to a guy being cleared of perjury in a criminal trial.

That is not bias.

The prosecution accepted that the only people with first hand evidence were Vincent, his wife and McCullum. All other parties knew only what one of those three had told them, second-hand.

This was a highly respected judge, and all the press present - mainly Kiwi - report that the judge, the lead prosecutor and the two defence barristers turned in superb performances.
 
Have no sympathy for Kaneria (it doesnt help the fact that he was an average bowler)

All Judges are Highly respected, thats why you call them 'Your Honour'
They let a match fixer walk free. Brendon Maccullum testimony alone should have convicted him.

Read my summary in the Cairns thread.

McCullum could not be taken as a credible witness because he kept changing his testimony.

In 2011 he told the ICC that in 2008 Cairns discussed betting with him.

Then in 2013 he suddenly remembered that Cairns told him that day in 2008 that everything in India is fixed.

Then in 2014 he suddenly remembered that in 2008 Cairns had asked him to fix IPL matches, and he suddenly remembered that Vincent and Tuffey were in on it.

McCullum's credibility as a witness fell apart because he kept changing his story. He came across as a man who changed his story all the time.

I dont think its because Kaneria is a Hindu. Kaneria was on the decline back in 2010 looked ineffective and was getting smashed. Ajmal was the new kid on the block who was creating a lot of hype. Also he was quality in all 3 formats rather than Kaneria who was a Test specialist. Pre-Misbah era we mostly cared about ODIS rather than Tests. Now we have Yasir Shah there is no clamour for Kanerias return because we dont need him. If Amir was a mediocre trundler i doubt PCB would have put up such a case for him. He is seen as a once in a generation talent. Thats why he has been given special treatment. And also his age at the time. Asif is a repeat offender and also age isnt on his side he is 33. Butt also is seen as the mastermind so he isnt given much support. No one really argues Asif n Butts case as much as they do for Amir.

Remember Akmal dropped many of his catches and stumping's
 
If Kaneria was a youngsta beauty hyped as a future Great like Amir he would get the PCBs backing. Kaneria had nothing to offer PCB as a player so they left him to it. If our spin cupboard was bare and we needed Kaneria then PCB would have defended him but we had Ajmal and now we have Yasir.

The responses over here have pretty much summed up my OP. The guy gets no attention solely on the basis he was a crap bowler and also his minority status in Pakistan didn't help his cause either. We left him to the dogs in the West.

Nothing to do with his religion. It's just that he was not as talented as amir. Also kaneria didn't even fix any matches when he was playing for Pakistan. It was in some county league.
 
i think the life ban based on 1 man's word is ridiculous,

And that's where pcb should allow him to play domestic cricket

I am not sure if you are aware of how badly minorities are treated in Pakistan. Agree with the talented part which is why it makes his treatment even more sad. The PCB should have backed him given that he was banned on the basis of one person's word

I dont think there was a court case against Kaneria for fixing. If there was, I dont think he did time. He was banned by ECB and Cairns, if he were still playing would probably face the same consequences.


People confuse actions taken by cricketing bodies and those taken by the court of law. There is a difference.

Amir, Asif, Butt were found guilty, did their time and according to ICC can come back. Kaneria was certainly done in by ECB when they put a life ban on him. In that respect, it should not have been a life ban if proven guilty, but with a certain time limit as in the case of the trio.
 
I have good reason to believe Danish was innocent and certainly didnt spot fix himself.

ECB put up case against him so that they can say that their own boy was entrapped and influenced by a senior international.

Did a decent job, however. If only he could have cut down on the two bad balls he bowled every over and had a keeper that was not Kamran Akmal.

Maybe the PCB thinks that this particular verdict is spot on? Do you want them to support Kaneria just because he is a Pakistani player?

Over whelming evidence? LOL!!

ECB forced Westfield to testify against Kaneria just to prove themselves right. They had no case without Westfield and were on the verge of losing the case if Westfield had not showed up.

That is why his ban is a life ban. And the only reason why he is not in jail is because the English Director of Public Prosecutions judged it was a waste of money to lock him up when we could just kick him out instead.

I have a lot of sympathy for Amir (due to his age), Asif (who took no money) and even a little for Butt (who has served his punishment for a bad offence but is now being persecuted by double jeopardy).

I have no sympathy for Kaneria. And why would we English give preferential treatment to Muslims over Hindus?
