Why the silence from the media when it comes to Younis Khan's behaviour with Grant Flower?

Awkward silence from usual suspects in the media who would have been up and down if Umar Akmal or Ahmed Shehzad had done what Younis Khan did to Grant Flower ie pulled out a knife when criticized or some weakness pointed out in them.

So why the preferential treatment - any ideas?

Because Grant Flower has zero credibility in what he says or does...

Because there has been an agenda for years that Misbah and Younis were Saints who were entitled to be picked in their late 30’s and early 40’s because they were Good while younger men like Umar Akmal and Salman Butt were Bad.

But Misbah and Younis ran the team and blocked the development of younger batsmen. And the two younger batsmen they tolerated - Azhar and Shafiq - were followers, not leaders, who were incapable of rising to the task when MisYou left.

Misbah and Younis were a cancer at the heart of the team. And now it is theirs again.

The reason I can think of is silence of Grant Flower for 4 years or so. What Younis did was completely wrong and should have been highlighted straight away if Grant felt threatened but he didnt utter a word. If it was due to keeping the team issues private and something he thinks was unlike Younis and an exception then he should have kept it to himself even now.

All around the sporting world there are many things which happen inside team dressing rooms, meetings etc and sharing them only after your contract is not renewed is not very professional in my opinion.

Younis should have been reprimanded straight away but Grant didnt pursue anything. Now when Younis is starting a new innings in his life in the role of a coach, he casually puts forward this incident. I am not judging anyone or taking anyone's side but I dont think it was right from Grant's part as well to brought it up in an poorly timed manner after 4 years.

Samlan could have been one of the best ever opener and captain we ever had and Umar could have been one of the best batsmen but their priorities were different. They ruined their own careers so I dont think we can blame anyone else for what happened to them.

Depends.

Maybe Grant feels Younis in a position of authority is unsafe and unwise. A man who can grab a table knife and put it to someone's throat is probably not a good coach to have around younger players.

But you're right, Younis should have been banned on the spot and Mickey/Grant shouldn't have brushed aside something as ridiculous as this.

Pindrop silence :)

Silence from some in the media who would normally be jumping up and down at this type of thing, having show after show on it, phone-ins etc etc.

Silence, because YK is well-in and very cosy with some media especially Karachi media.

Next time they start jumping up and down lets remind them of this.

They’re quick to hold things against others so we’ll hold it against them next time they indulge in hypocrisy.

Umar and Butt werent just bad, they betrayed PK. YK should not be anywhere near any coaching setup, he is a nut case but Misbah although lacking any ambition or creativity is comparatively sane. He is not suited to Director of cricket role but he would actually make a good CEO of the PCB in the future.

The reason he stayed quiet is because he would have lost his job, and so would have Mickey. They would have been punished for doing right thing. YK would have got a slap on the wrist, most fans would have believed its some sort of conspiracy and the coaches would have lost their living.

His media friends have made sure this issue doesn't get highlighted.

better..
it was ridiculous of him to spoke on now..
when pakistan is about to start preparation for the most important tour & yunis is part of it.
being employed by PCB for sucha long period of time even without any significant improvement in the batting department really ungrateful i would say

Why did Grant Flower wait so many years to spill this? He should've revealed this earlier.

There's one former wicket-keeper who seems to have lost his tongue regarding this.

Normally he'd be going nuts about this.

I wonder why.

Lost his job because he had a knife on his throat? As per contracts which are given to most of the coaches he still would have gotten paid majority of the salary of his term in case PCB would have terminated his contract. Again why would have PCB done that, there is no reason of it and no such precedence so not sure why you are saying he would have lost his job.

You know how our system works, these guys are not naive. And even if he kept his job, YK was going nowhere and GF and MA would still have to work with him. GF did the right thing at the time.

YK is well connected and that's all there is to it.

At a time when we are starved of fresh cricket news the ability to keep an entire media quiet really is impressive.

That keeper had always been the most cunning and toxic of individuals that have ever gotten involved with Pakistan cricket.

And he had been able to do it while having his image painted as truest Patriot who sacrificed his career to speak the truth and stand up against the match fixing evil and then later on as a Captain and ex cricketer.

Not anyone who speaks about him which is different than the image that he and his media buddies had been able to create for decades will be attacked and labeled as racist who is against keepers ethnic background.
Saj isn't that amazing?

Absolutely.

Planning a story about how Mickey forced the knife into Younis Khan's hand :P

I am not sure what they call it in Urdu, but in pothwari we have panjis. These guys will always put their panjis over any honest opinion.

It is clear Grant Flower did this to embarrass YK. He said nothing for 4 years and tbh the man should have been fired a long time ago for doing zilch as Pakistan's batting coach. The moment the PCB parts ways with him, he goes on criticizing his former employer and players he coached.

Saying "he held a knife to my throat" is not criticizing...

Anyway, once again I will emphasize that it was a passing comment in a lengthy podcast. This came under the topic of interesting characters in the dressing room.

No doubt that YK was an interesting character :yk

Are you saying that GF is lying?

Yoni has too many friends in the media, and too many Pakistanis hold him in very high regard, especially Pathan. They’ll support him no Matter what. So whichever channel or news agency goes after him will suffer in ratings.

Just look at the educated people here taking Younis’s side. Now think of what the extreme ideology people in Pak will do if their hero is insulted like this.

YK is an embarrassment himself and doesn't need anyone else to do the job for him. Which other player has Grant Flower criticized?

Rashid Latif "Younis Khan is different. We do not know what happens in the dressing room. Azharuddin can be a reason for this. In 2016, Younis made a double century at the Oval. He [Younis] did not take the name of the batting coach [Grant Flower]. He said that I was struggling and talked to Azharuddin. That is a big factor that a player is opting for someone else rather than the coach. Flower must have done some things as batting coach and has served Pakistan. I think this Azharuddin factor must have been somewhere in his [Flower’s] mind,”

Probably not, but if he didn't reveal the episode back then because the image and respect of Pakistan Cricket was so dear to him, why did he choose to reveal it now? What is he trying to achieve by doing this? I question the timing now that YK is Pakistan's batting coach

If this was umar akmal plenty of ex cricketers would be queuing round the block to stick their boot in to criticise him

I don't think he cared about the image of PK cricket, he cared about his job. And he had every right to be worried as YK wasn't going anywhere.

It would be on these channels 24/7, on repeat, with dramatic music.

Talk show after talk show, youtube etc.

The silence of some is rather awkward and interesting.

The holding of a butter knife by YK must have been a symbolic gesture indicating to GF that I just don't think you I respect you enough to get advice from you. We know he can have difficulty controlling his emotions. Mountain being made out of a mole hill.

After all GF stayed with the team for so many years. If he thought this to be big deal, he should have reported it PCB. That he didn't is testament to claims by some here that he was just collecting a pay cheque and did not let come his pride come in the way.

Flower has a double hundred against Pakistan so not exactly a dumbo with the bat - he is polite and did the right thing by apologizing to YK - none of this will mean anything for YK's friends.

I think he and Mickey probably had a chat and they agreed to keep it quiet or risk losing their jobs.

As you would do. The worst the PCB would have done to YK is a fine and a short ban, they would have lost their jobs on some pretense or other because the likes of Amir Sohail, Basit, Rashid et would accused them of some conspiracy.

Ah yes, the humble butter knife - an internationally recognised symbol of respect (or lack thereof).

I am disappointed that GF did not hold up a spoon along with his apology to ensure it was genuine.

YK is a pathan through and through and GF is lucky he did not pull his gun at him otherwise things could have gotten out of hand. :yk

GF just does not have the persona to coach a great like YK. He milked PCB for 5 years and I am sure during this time many other players must have done things to undermine his authority. That he is apologizing now sums up his meek 'don't rock the boat' personality.

Again, very true. Younis Khan should be awarded the Nobel peace prize for fighting his inherent Pathan genes and resisting the urge to pull out a gun. Very smart rationale.

I believe a former player is saying that Flower came up with this story due to depression and Covid.

What geniuses we have in the media.

Ok answer this honestly: If you are in an alley fight who are you going to trust with having your back? YK or GF?

I rest my case.

The truth is geniuses in their domain have been known to throw temper tantrums and being plain obnoxious. What's the big deal? We judge them not on their human frailties that we ourselves are guilty of but on their skills and talent that have either benefited humanity or in YK's case brought joy to millions of his fans through his memorable knocks over the course of a 20 year career. Understand this - YK has no desire to drink the politically correct kool aid that folks like you have gotten used to growing up in the west. He is happy with being original and expressing himself if he is unhappy about something.

Expressing his disdain for a coach he did not respect in the first place in a symbolic manner using a dining knofe is just white noise that will drown out against the folk songs sung in the future celebrating YK's legacy and exploits.

You think Sachin Tendulkar has similar stories about him?

Yes, YK was a brilliant batsman but he was no genius. Lets also understand and admit that somethings are plain wrong. Threatening someone with a play or real knife are wrong and no amount of sugarcoating can make it right.

I don't know I'd imagine YK to be a bit of a mercenary in battle. Ready to backstab you, offer you up as a sacrifice, throw you to the ground and escape to safety. Then give that patented YK smile in a press conference about his heroic escape!

Now you are just making stuff up. Remember it is an alley fight not a long drawn out where you get to flip sides. In that scenario I can only imagine GF milking both sides. YK has never back stabbed anyone. His issue is that he is too genuine and unable to control his true emotions to the detriment of his image.

But I guess you would rather pick GF which is quite disingenuous on your part if you ask me.:dw

MIG Bhai, GF has issued a formal apology. Why would he do that? Either the incident never happened in the way it was portrayed in the podcast and if it did, that GF never reported then and is even apologizing now makes me even more convinced YK was right in never soliciting advice from a coach lacking a spine and the character worthy of a pathan.

Let's be realistic. YK as I said, is a pathan and they are known to have short tempers. Their culture even promotes carrying guns. Seeing this incident in an isolated manner without factoring in his background and access to proper education is just plain wrong.

Every sport has these type of characters. Why just compare him with SRT?

It's unfortunate that as a Pakistani you don't consider someone with over 10k runs, 50 ave, and 100 catches a cricketing genius. I am pretty sure he walks into the cricket hall of fame no questions asked. What will GF be remembered for? A coach with no legacy whatsoever or just a bystander going through the motions as time flew by?

I don't take sides and it's a hypothetical situation so technically anything you say is made up!
It's not disingenuous to say that YK has only ever done what was best for him.

And so did GF by not reporting the incident to PCB then so he can keep milking them. And that he is apologizing now is in whose best interest? But as I said behaving in politically correct manner while hiding your true feelings is what we all becomes accustomed to so I am not surprised at the backlash against YK. I rate him to be the most misunderstood Pakistani cricketer ever. You can continue to berate him and call him selfish but his services to the game of cricket and the pride and joy he has brought to his nation will never be forgotten! :yk

Think GF issued an apology because it was the decent thing to do to diffuse the situation.

I do think YK was a brilliant batsmen but no matter how good you are, it doesnt give you the right to be rude to anyone, junior or senior.

It makes me laugh when some say YK's behaviour is justified because he scored a lot more runs than Grant Flower and had a better average than him.

Under no circumstances is Younis behaviour acceptable. He's a lucky man that Grant Flower did not report it to the Australian police. I'm sure the police in Australia wouldn't give a damn about the number of runs Younis had scored during his career.

Very low profile in terms of media for Younis Khan at the moment in terms of interaction from England - lets see if that lasts long.

So Grant Flower apologized lol, clearly he blew the incident out of proportion. Good riddance to non performing supporting staff members who overstayed their welcome

Actually his apology wasn't about blowing the incident out of proportion, rather letting it slip and speaking about it.

I'm glad ex-players are not defaming Younis Khan. It's good to see them stick up for him. Following Grant Flower's apology, I'm glad he got the last laugh as well.

But we shouldn't let this distract us from the real problem in Pakistan cricket i.e. Misbah.

It’s been 1 year since Micky Aruther left.

Since then I decided to shun Pakistan cricket and I have missed a good 80% of it. Before that I had watched nearly everything from 1992.

It was the last straw that broke the camels back and I feel vindicated when I read disgusting incidents like this. Not just that, these unprofessional incidents go unpunished and then even rewarded for these misdeeds.
