Why was Shoaib Malik unsuccessful in duplicating his Sialkot captaincy in other captaincy stints?

He was touted as having had a tremendous impact on the Sialkot team in domestic cricket and many people, analysts, domestic cricket followers praised him for the impact he had on really lifting the Sialkot team in T-20 cricket.

But he has had various opportunities to captain Pakistan in International Cricket in T-20, ODI and Test Cricket, to captain Karachi Kings and now the Multan Sultans in the PSL. He has been a complete and utter failure as captain, he has on record even run away when things got tough for e.g. resigning from the captaincy for Karachi Kings in the middle of PSL 1, deliberately thowing away a domestic game in 2005 to protest against a decision made by the tournament organizers. The 2009 report by the team management on his captaincy was less flattering where it stated that the guy was a loner, extremely aloof, did not really interact much with the team mates to build relationships and therefore struggled to lift the team up in tough circumstances.

I am just surprised at the completely lack luster body language and concern about where his MS team stood in the tournament and the need to uplift the team to the qualifiers. To me giving him the captaincy was the biggest mistake because lets face it, the guy has a guaranteed spot in the PSL as a platinum player irrespective of match winning performances, he is clearly not motivated and he wasn't even remotely scared about losing the captaincy.

Anyways, the point of this spiel is that the Franchises need to avoid giving the captaincy to someone just because of seniority alone. All the Franchises need to think about giving the captaincy in the future to players who have a lot more at stake at the PSL and for Pakistan Cricket.

Bro captaincy is not all about going on to the field and choosing the bowler to bowl and placing the field.

Captaincy is about selecting the players you want and playing accordingly.

In Sialkot, Shoaib had the authority to select and drop the players he wanted. He would see the conditions and select the players accordingly.

Just like how Misbah was given Islamabad United authority where he only selected those players which he played with. Hussain Talat, Asif Ali, Ajmal, Imran Khalid,Faheem Ashraf, Waqas Maqsood. These were all Misbahs picks and his team won the PSL twice. Infact, he made such a combination that his team is very good even without him.

Same way, Malik had made a combination and a team at sialkot. He had the likes of ABdur Rehman, Mansoor Amjad, umaid Asif.

Here in PSL, he doesn't have the same authority. He is teh captain, but he didnt get to select the team squad.

I can sympathize with the fact he didn't have authority over the squad of 16, in fact even the Franchise owners didn't, they had to go with what the PCB picked and selected in the squad.

But Malik is an experienced and seasoned campaigner, he could atleast have shown the body language and attitude of an experienced, seasoned campaigner who looked competent in his job. Coming to tosses and not knowing the names of players in his team, showing a dull defeatist body language in the field, not showing enough urgency knowing his team is in the bottom of the table. I mean these are things that are under his control and he should have done better

Maybe Misbah should have used the same philosophy during his international playing days and not selected complete duds that led us to number 7-8 ranking in all formats and embarrassing performances in the 2015 WC or 2013 CT.

I think, the multan owners could have held some fuctions or dinners for team building and gelling.

One thing that Islamabad stands out was because Dean Jones always promoted team gelling by having night outs and such

Team management deserves blame, Malik maybe somewhat, but that doesnt make him a bad captain nor does it take away his Sialkot Stallions achievement

Those sialkot Stallion wins are very big achievements and probably would not had come had malik not been captain. Thing is, if Multan plans to keep him as captain, then give him the authority of selecting players.

Problem is, the selectors only look at stats, while players look at combination.

Misbah picked Imran Khalid and Asif Ali who are not that good players according to stats, and even the team analysts were against the selections, but those players won the matches for Misbah

Same way, Malik will want to select players he has played with and knows better. I havent followed Malik and dont really know his favorites, but if he had authroity he would had done better with what he had.

Also, its a 6 team tournament, 2 teams are bound to go out. Islamabad and Quetta are well built team, and law of average should play in favour of Lahore. They cant be consistently miss out on the play offs.

oh bhai, read the context of the thread. Im just using an example to explain the problem that Malik is facing and why he shouldn't be judged here as he has proven himself with Sialkot Stallions and why those wins with the Stallions should never be written off.
