Will any cricketer surpass Sachin Tendulkar's popularity in our lifetime?

Nah.. May be you are from relatively "old" generation so you don't see it. otherwise I see new high-school/ college kids from T20 age and they absolutely adore Kohli! To them he is like a superman. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up becoming just as popular as SRT if he isn't already.
 
Tendulkar had the personality of cardboard. No charisma, no communication skills, and very robotic in his batting. Kohli is what a superstar really look and act like.

I don’t know what people are talking about here! I can’t think of any other cricketer who was/is as popular and respected as Sachin Tendulkar. Imran Khan was very popular but still he’s far behind Sachin. I can’t blame the Pakistanis who think he’s more popular because he’s a hero of theirs.

But those who are dragging in someone like Afridi into this are clearly trolling. And their method of measuring popularity is ridiculous. Going by their method, the most controversial figure will always be the most popular. Here’s the definition of popularity for you guys : “liked or admired by many people or by a particular person or group”.

Virat Kohli is currently the only player who can potentially reach those heights.
 
From now till maybe the end of time, the most popular cricketer will always be an Indian. The sheer number of fans of the Indian cricket team dwarves all other fanbases. Doesn't mean they are better than their counterparts from other nations though:najam

Wasim , Akhtar have been way more popular than any Indian bowler. Indians just like any other people are very fair in appreciating talent.

After Tendulkar there are only a handful of Indian cricketers who have had mad following.
 
If we look outside of Asia Imran Khan definitely has a far greater following. In their playing days one was a celebrity in Asia whereas the other was one in USA, UK and Australia. Also he married a Goldsmith.

If you hear the story of Saeed Anwar about his visit in America he talks about Imran Khan's level of fame in the west. He was expected to be bombared with questions in regards to his visit at the airport but was able to pass through with far less inconvenience than he expected because much to his suprised they had head of Imran Khan.

Also Viv and Joel Garner while in vacation in America happened to be asked about Imran Khan when they were in a lift after introducing themselves as cricketers.

To suggest Tendulkar is more popular outside Asia is ridiculous and quite frankly ignorant.

Virat Kohli has already overtaken Tendulkar's popularity anyway and he's currently the most marketable athlete.

There has been no survey (even a casual youtube or online poll) as such on American/non cricket nations population to actually prove who's more well known globally. I only see people throwing random unverified accounts of Imran's popularity. Even if one is to believe in those stories there is nothing in those stories to suggest Sachin isn't as well known. I am happy if some people in America asked Viv Richards about Imran some day, there is nothing in there to suggest some people never asked some other cricketers about Sachin? It is extremely insecure and petty to draw such conclusions and make such claims to begin with.

Fact is cricket itself isn't well known outside cricket playing nations. In fact most people from many cricket playing nations don't know much about the game. Tendulkar, Imran both have very little to no global appeal and it is not their fault. At the end of the game the sport has to be popular and be broadcasted/reported in major media agencies for it reach global audience. Cricket hasn't reached that level yet. Hence no Ronaldo, Messi, Federer level global appeal in cricket.

We are not concerned either.

Tendulkar's by far the biggest box office celebrity in cricket. His association/presence sells out arenas like no other still.

People talking about personality above, well genuineness is the biggets personality there is. You can have your tattoos, funky hair styles, ripped body, be a loud mouth attention seeker, be a womanizer etc etc that doesn't make up a personality as such, not really and if it does for you and many others well good for you no judgement but the very fact that people like Sachin, Federer, Messi are so madly loved and adored by the masses in overwhelming numbers goes to show the qualities people really look for in iconic figures are beyond show off and big talk. Being a genuine and well grounded person is the greatest strength one can have as a person and Sachin has been handsomely blessed with it.

Things he's achieved, you don't just earn it through mere numbers.
 
1) Sachin had a first mover advantage. People were getting TVs at their homes, and Sachin was the first big star on the screen.
2) Underdog, he was the star of the a weak team. That makes a good story where he carried the hope of billions.
3) Non-controversial, he did not have any issue on or off the pitch.

Today, in a globalized world, players like Kohli are just one star among many stars.
 
I think maybe AB de Villiers, if he played for India because he has got such huge fan-following in India being a non-Indian, I can only imagine what would have been the scenario if he was from India. Everyone appreciates talent and particularly when you have that in abundance.

I would even say with the talent he had, he would have been massively popular even if he had played for England or Australia as well.

But since he plays for SA, he unfortunately falls way short. South Africans simply dont have that popularity which is why someone like G Smith is much less popular than Hayden, Sehwag and even a test specialist Alastair Cook.

Popularity isnt just about talent. There will always be players who will be more talented than Sachin, and breaks his records. Thats the reality but that wont necessarily makethem more popular.

Sachin represented an era, hope of billions and this image is ever lasting. Just like Mahatma Gandhi, there will always be many visionary leaders but none will be as popular as him.

Imran Khan becomes Prime Minister of Pakistan. It will surely help him become more popular as a person globally.
 
Just because of huge number of Indians and his fans elsewhere in the world .... it would be hard to match his numbers !!!!!!
 
Well it's settled now. Imran Khan is THE most popular cricketer to have ever stepped foot on the face of the planet. Being PM means he will easily take over Sachin as the most popular Cricketer in the world. It's just that this popularity will be because of being PM rather than cricket itself, but it still counts:sm
 
Not a competition.

Imran Khan is extremely well known in the world, especially all the commonwealth countries.

SRT is also famous, but mostly in IND, and outside Asia not many care about him, or tell stories about him to their children, or discuss him in their drawing rooms.

Imran, is another story. And with becoming PM, let's not compare to any cricketer.
 
Not sure about popularity but Imran Khan is much, much more famous than Tendulkar as of now. As famous Tendulkar is, he is largely unknown outside SC and Indian diaspora abroad. Tendulkar isn't really relevant worldwide. Imran Khan will be known by far more people in the world now.
 
Tendulkar is famous as cricketer while Imran khan will be famous because he is prime minister of pakistan.

It will overlap now. Now more people will know about his cricket career because of his political success. So in the end Imran will beat Sachin in global popularity (in terms of being a cricketer). You might call it unfair to Sachin because he isnt a relevant politician but it is how it is.

1. W.G. Grace
2. Don Bradman
3. Garry Sobers

Who? Cricket's popularity is declining outside sub continent and you are saying people will bother with some one who retired 25 years back?

I guess even IK no longer uses his cricketing credentials as he is now established as a winning politician.

He doesn't have to be. Imran Khan wasn't even named by WISDEN among the 5 Cricketers of the Century in 2000. They were (era wise) -

1. Don Bradman
2. Jack Hobbs
3. Garry Sobers
4. Viv Richards
5. Shane Warne


Not even the most patriotic Pak cricket fan with a brain would call Imran the most influential cricketer of all time. I'm possibly the biggest fan of Sachin. Yet I'm not an idiot to rate him the greatest cricketer/batsman or the most influential cricketer of all time. When you make appalling testaments, all you do is invite people to make fun of you.

The thread was about popularity of a cricket player. Clearly the only criterias here are

1) a cricket player.
2) most popular.

Cricket's declining populariy has nothing to do with the fact that more people will now know about Imran khan as an ex-cricketer who lead his team to glory. More people around the world will now know about Imran being related to cricket than they would know about Tendulkar. Its just a natural consequence of political success and becoming head of a state. Sure, Tendulkar didnt have this advantage of a successful political career but thats another discussion.

Thread is in Cricket section and talking about popularity based on Cricket so i dont think Imran Khan becoming popular outside cricket matters much.

Also why do people think IK become popular because he became PM? Trump is President of US and in how many countries he is popular? in How many countries Teressa May is popular?
 
Kohli is at his peak yet he's nowhere near Sachin's popularity. The reception Sachin got every time he stepped foot in the stadium,no cricketer in my memory has come anywhere near that yet.

There could be an arguement that Kohli is probably ahead of Sachin as a batsman but surely in terms of popularity has has not been able to replace Sachin yet.
 
I don't expect to see anyone matching Sachin Tendulkar's popularity. It is because cricket has changed. It is now more about team than any particular individual.

So what, if you are popular it shouldn't matter right? Imran retired, it never affected his popularity. Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Akhtar retired, it never affected their popularity.

I see you didn't dwell upon popularity beyond social media which needless to say is huge factor in a country like India, where majority still doesn't have any access to social media.

As for Imran, it due to the fact that none of Pakistan's current cricketers being nowhere near good and charismatic as Imran was.

As for Afridi & Shoaib, it's blasphemy to mention them in same sentence as Imran and Tendulkar.
 
Tendulkar had a charm for his era. Kohli will overtake him as a favourite of the younger gen

In one of his early battles with Tendulkar during the Sahara Cup in Canada, Saqlain thought it would be a good idea to sledge the champion batsman. As it panned out, the wily off-spinner sledged to never sledge the then Indian captain again.

"I was new when I sledged him for the first time. If I recall correctly, it was the 1997 edition. Sachin quietly came up to me and said 'I never misbehaved with you, why are you misbehaving with me'? I got so embarrassed that I did not know what to say to him," Saqlain said over the phone on Tendulkar's 47th birthday.

"He said to me 'I rate you high as a person and player'. I was so embarrassed that I never sledged him again. I can't tell you what I said to him but I apologised to him after the game."

"Thereafter, even when he was smashing me all over, I never thought of sledging him," recalled the 43-year-old, describing Tendulkar as one of the most humble human beings he met.

Sachin Tendulkar has decided to settle his lawsuit against bat-maker Spartan in the Federal Court of Australia after the company apologised for “breach of contract”.

In 2016, Tendulkar entered into a worldwide exclusive sponsorship agreement with Spartan to promote its sporting goods and sportswear.

Tendulkar alleged that Spartan failed to comply with its obligations under the agreement by failing to pay him royalties and endorsement fees as per the agreement signed by both parties.

“Spartan sincerely apologises to Tendulkar for its failure to honour his sponsorship agreement and is grateful for Tendulkar’s patience in resolving this dispute,” Les Galbraith, the COO of Spartan, stated in a joint press release.

Spartan had continued to use Tendulkar’s name and image even after the termination of the agreement.

“Tendulkar provided his promotional services at various Spartan events in both Mumbai and London...he was unable to pursue other sponsorship opportunities for sporting goods and sportswear while the Spartan agreement was in place,” the release stated.

Tendulkar, in the law suit against a number of Spartan companies and their directors, Kunal Sharma and Galbraith, alleged “breach of contract, misleading and deceptive conduct” and sought injunctions, damages as well as cancellation of trade marks...”

The joint statement also mentions that, “as part of the settlement, a number of the Spartan companies have submitted to judgment against them and the Spartan group is permanently restrained by court orders from using Tendulkar’s name, image and likeness including to falsely suggest any endorsement by Sachin Tendulkar.”

“The Spartan companies also publicly acknowledged that Tendulkar has had no association with Spartan since September 17, 2018, when Mr Tendulkar terminated their sponsorship agreement,” the statement read.

Virat Kohli was 7th pick in the ODI draft on PP going on right now. Tendulkar 2nd, Dhoni 1st

Test drafts:- Tendulkar was 1st pick, Kohli I think barely top 20

Not that this is everything but gives you an idea Kohli isn't still even a Top 20 cricketer ever whole Sachin is serious contender for top 2/3 by worst opinions top 10 of ite a room full of Pakistanis by chance because even they will find it hard to justify relegation beyond that point.

"The difference between Tendulkar and others is that he is passionate about the game. There aren't many people who would give their life to the game and to his team," he added.

The pandemic has adversely impacted several industries including cricket as those dependent on the game are finding it difficult to make ends meet with all tournaments suspended.

Recently, Chaudhary's plea had gone viral on social media with fans requesting each other to help the bat maker, who is also known as 'Ashraf Chacha' in the Mumbai cricket circuit. Bollywood actor Sonu Sood had also come forward to help and asked for his address from fans on Twitter on Monday. Now Sachin has also helped the ailing bat maker.

Chaudhary is undergoing treatment in Savla Hospital for the past 12 days, as per a report in PTI. He has been suffering from diabetes and pneumonia-related problems. He and his family were finding it difficult to pay the hospital bills and had asked for help. Prashant Jethmalani, Chaudhary's close friend has also been asking cricketers and others to donate.

Jethmalani on Tuesday confirmed to PTI that Sachin talked to the bat maker and has helped him financially as well. "Tendulkar came forward and has spoken to Ashraf Chacha. He has also helped him financially. A major chunk of the finances has been donated by the legendary batsman," he was quoted as saying by PTI.

Chaudhary owns an ancestral shop named M Ashraf Bro in South Mumbai and has fixed bats of some of the biggest names in world cricket. He even repaired the bats of the likes of Steve Smith and Chris Gayle apart from the Indian stars like Sachin, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni among others.

A lot of people in the west who don’t know about cricket know of Imran Khan (through politics). In terms of how many people “know about them”, Imran Khan perhaps is the most known cricketer ever.

That being said, “popularity” wise it isn’t even a debate - Tendulkar and Kohli will reign supreme for a long, long time. Dhoni is quite high up as well actually.

My white teachers in middle school and high school in Canada knew who imran khan was they would be going gaga over him. I doubt Sachin has that type of popularity outside India you are the one who’s living in his own dream
