One of the most talented players the UK has ever produced, he had it all: finishing, passing, dribbling, power and electric pace. Watching his highlight reel for Spurs truly encapsulated the jaw dropping feats of genius and brilliance that he's capable of, from dribbling the whole pitch to score away to Inter, or smashing countless bangers in the top corner from distance.

His time at Real Madrid has been fractious, but we shouldn't forget how successful it has been for him. Specifically, his 4 UCL titles, with Bale scoring one of the most iconic goals in European history to win it vs Liverpool. We can't forget his stunning solo run to score a last minute winner vs Real in the Copa del Rey final.

There's no denying he is one hell of a player, but this is a different Gareth Bale to the mind-blowing talent that he was when he left Spurs. His attitude has been questioned as of late, and he has been playing very little football recently. He is already injured until mid-October just from 2 games in international duty.

He has the raw ability, but will he have the desire and fitness to be a gamechanger for Spurs this season? Or is this a Bale that has declined too far from his prime?

If he can play 25+ Premier League games this season he should be a success.

I think success depends on his fitness goals play regularly rather than ability or skills

Would you not say that his ability or skills partly depends on his fitness as well? He might not physically be the same player, capable of the same things and possessing that same pace and power.

Gareth Bale says he "grew up" during his time with Real Madrid and has "no regrets" having departed the Spanish club to return to Tottenham.

Bale joined Spurs on a season-long loan earlier this month seven years after having departed north London for a then world-record transfer fee.

Despite having played a key role in Real winning four Champions League titles, Bale fell out of favour with manager Zinedine Zidane and made just 20 appearances last season as he was frozen out by the Frenchman.

The 31-year-old also endured a strained relationship with the Spanish media, who were highly critical of him, particularly towards the end of his time in Spain.

"No I don't have any regrets, no," Bale told Sky Sports. "I just try and play football, that's all I can do and everything else that's said externally is out of my control.

"As I said, I have no regrets of what I've done, whatever anyone else has said, that's up to them. I know my opinion of myself and my family know exactly what I am, so that's all I'm worried about.

"Obviously going into a different culture, a different country, I've had to grow up as a person, never mind a footballer.

"You just learn how to deal with the situations that you're in. Obviously I've been in immense pressure situations. I've had people on the pitch whistling in the stadium to me.

"So yeah I've just learned how to deal with those type of things, to not take it to seriously, take it too much to heart, and yeah just get on with it. It's football - something that you love doing and you just need to give your best and sometimes that's all you can do."

Tottenham finished sixth in the Premier League last season, and with Bale's arrival the club will be aiming for a return to the top four and Champions League qualification.

After a surprise defeat at home to Everton in their season opener, Spurs overcame a lacklustre first-half performance to thrash Southampton 5-2 on Sunday, giving them some much-needed momentum to take into this weekend's match against Newcastle.

"Of course when you come into any club you want to do well, you want to help the team as much as you can," Bale said.

"We have a great team here now with a great squad. They've been doing great. Obviously in the time that I've gone away they've gone on and on and obviously reached the Champions League final, the club's got a new stadium, the club itself is better, they're doing better in the Premier League every year.

"So I just want to add to that. I want to try and bring a bit more to the team and try and progress even more and keep pushing in the right direction."

Bale is not expected to feature imminently for Spurs as he recovers from a knee injury suffered on international duty with Wales in early September, but he has already been thinking about his first appearance.

Asked what he is looking forward to most, Bale said: "Just playing. I think putting that Spurs shirt on again.

"Obviously it's disappointing that the fans aren't going to be there at the stadium for my first game back because I feel like the reception would have been incredible but just looking forward to playing football, playing with the team, doing as well as I can, helping the team and having a great season collectively."

In the new Pitch to Post podcast, the panel reveal the inside story on Gareth Bale's return to Tottenham and discuss the size of Manchester United's problems.

Sky Sports reporter Paul Gilmour spent 16 hours at the Tottenham Hotspur training ground on the day Bale was finally announced as a Spurs player after seven years in the Spanish capital.

"It was a bit of a long day," he told the Pitch to Post Podcast. "I headed out in my polo thinking it would be done and dusted long before it got cold, and I was still there at 10.30pm at night! I'd been on site since around about 7:30am for the first live to Sky Sports News.

"Even after the last update at 10.30pm, I still had to do a recorded piece to go out later that evening so it was a long day, but it's totally worth it on a day like that. It felt like Deadline Day and those days don't come around too often."

This is a new chapter for Bale, an opportunity to turn the page on a fractious end to his Real Madrid and re-establish himself as an elite player.

Gareth Bale: Jose Mourinho hopes Tottenham forward reaches 'better level' soon

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho says he hopes Gareth Bale can reach a "better level" soon, after the Welsh forward continued a stuttering start to his second stint with the club.

Bale was substituted shortly before the hour-mark as Spurs produced a disappointing display to lose 1-0 to Royal Antwerp in the Europa League on Thursday.

Since returning to the club on loan from Real Madrid in September, seven years after departing White Hart Lane for La Liga, recovery from a knee injury has limited Bale to just three appearances.

The 31-year-old came on as a substitute as Spurs blew a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with West Ham, and was an unused substitute in their 1-0 victory over Burnley on Monday.

Mourinho had said in the build-up to the Antwerp game that he thought Bale was "arriving" at his best form, but a tame individual display raised doubts over the four-time Champions League winner's ability to break into Spurs' in-form front line.

"Seven years is a long, long, long gap, so which player in the world is the same as he was seven years ago? Sometimes they are not better or worse, they are just different players," Mourinho said.

"You look for example to Ronaldo and Messi and compare them with seven years ago. They play in different areas, they play in different positions. They transform their qualities to try to export their qualities in other responsibilities on the tactical system of their teams. I think it happens with the majority of the players. So for sure he is a different player.

"Every word that I told on Wednesday, I believe in them, because he's working very, very hard, he's improving, he doesn't have one single injury since he recovered from the last one. He didn't miss one single minute of any training session. To play 90 minutes is still hard, to play high intensity is still difficult, but he's improving and hopefully he'll be back to a better level soon."

Jose Mourinho on Gareth Bale: 'I'm off to check the Real Madrid website'

"When I have five minutes I'm going to Safari to check the Madrid website - to see what they say."

Gareth Bale isn't alone in leaving Real Madrid under a bit of a cloud. And his manager Jose Mourinho couldn't resist a sly dig at the Spanish giants after Bale came off the bench to score the first goal of his loan spell back with Tottenham and deliver a 2-1 win over Brighton.

Bale was frozen out at the Bernabeu despite winning four Champions League titles and barely featured as Real won the league post-lockdown.

But he combined with another former Real player - left-back Sergio Reguilon - to score his first Premier League goal in seven years and send Mourinho's side up to second.

Mourinho, of course, had his own fiery exit from Madrid after winning the league title there.

"Of course I'm very pleased with Bale - he deserves that," Mourinho said.

"He knows we care about him and we know he cares about us, the team and the club, Spurs. He's the perfect fit, he's very calm, very intelligent, he has good feelings.

"He had bad feelings before, because the training process was hard, and his body was suffering a little bit, but we gave him what he needs as a whole.

"I am speaking about sports science, medical, my assistants, the other players. I'm very pleased for him to score this winning goal."

For the record, Real Madrid's website had no mention of the Bale goal as of Sunday night.

Gareth Bale: Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho says it's a 'crucial moment' for Wales star after Harry Kane injury

Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho says Gareth Bale is entering a "crucial moment" in his loan spell as he urged his attacking players to "step up" in the absence of injured striker Harry Kane.

Hampered by his own illness and injury, Bale has yet to make a major impact since re-joining Spurs on a season-long loan from Real Madrid.

The 31-year-old has started just one Premier League game this season, with Mourinho stating the star forward must "earn" his spot in the line-up.

The Spurs boss says Bale is getting "better and better" and, with Kane out for a "few weeks" after suffering two separate ankle injuries during a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Thursday, Mourinho has called on Bale's support.

Asked if Kane's injury presents an opportunity for Bale to step up, Mourinho said: "Yes, I hope so. He didn't play much [against Liverpool], but played 90 minutes in the cup and that, for him, is a big impact so it's impossible to be fresh to play a lot.

"It's a crucial moment for him, he's feeling better and better.

"When you lose a player of Harry's quality and dimension, the other guys have to step up. Hopefully he [Bale] can help us.

"Harry Kane is Harry Kane. There are players in some teams that are not replaceable.

"One thing is to have, like last season, three or four attacking players all injured at the same time, and another thing is to have Harry Kane.

"Of course, we have Vinicius, Bergwijn, Lucas [Moura], Lamela and Gareth Bale so it's a different situation. We have attacking players."

Mourinho has ruled out switching Bale to the centre forward role vacated by Kane, revealing the Welshman's ideal position was discussed and agreed upon when he arrived.

"I don't think he's a striker, I don't think he likes to play as a striker. It was something we spoke about when he joined us," Mourinho said.

"He was very objective with me, saying he doesn't feel he's a left winger like he was before or a No 10 like he was.

"The position that he likes to play is the position we are playing him every minute we give him which is the right side of the attack."

Surly Bale is better than both Lamela and Bergwin, Jose seems to have lost the plot after Woodward took his cheque book away and he hasn't recovered since.

He is finished at this level. Needs to go China or USA.

Gareth Bale over 'psychological scars', say Spurs boss Jose Mourinho

Gareth Bale has recovered from the "psychological scars" that led to his slow start to life back at Tottenham, manager Jose Mourinho said after their 4-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Bale and Harry Kane each scored twice in a comfortable win.

Wales' Bale, on loan from Real Madrid, has scored six goals in his past six games, with another three assists.

"I'm very happy, he is a fantastic player and I'm so happy to work with a player like him," said Mourinho.

Bale, 31, arrived at Spurs with a knee problem following a season in Spain where he struggled with injuries and a lack of first-team football under Zinedine Zidane.

He had started just two Premier League matches, and three of his four goals had come in cup games, until his recent return to form.

"Nobody challenged him. We just supported him," Mourinho told BBC Sport.

"I found psychological scars. When you have a couple of seasons with lots of injuries I think it is not about the muscular scars but the psychological scars - that brings fears and instability.

"There is a moment when you are working very well and everyone around you is giving everything we can give, there is a moment where that psychological barrier has to be broken. And he broke it. It was him, not us. We just supported him."

Mourinho added to BBC Radio 5 Live that Bale "needs to enjoy the positive talk with everybody that was doubting his first half of the season".

He recently said it is up to Real Madrid whether Bale could stay next season. The Wales forward has one year left on his deal with the club where he won four Champions Leagues in seven years.

Bale said: "I'm feeling good. A lot of games are coming thick and fast so it's about recovering and getting ready for the next one.

"I wouldn't have come if I didn't think I could contribute. It's taken time but that's the reality of football and my body. I feel good now, hopefully I can keep this form going."

Gareth Bale: Tottenham's on-loan forward plans to return to Real Madrid

Gareth Bale says he plans to return to Real Madrid next season after his loan at Tottenham ends.

Wales captain Bale rejoined Spurs on a season-long loan in September but has a year left on his Real contract, which expires in the summer of 2022.

Bale, 31, is with Wales as they prepare for their opening World Cup qualifier away against Belgium on Wednesday.

"There's no distraction for me," Bale said when asked how his club future might affect his international form.

"I think the main reason I came to Spurs this year was to play football first and foremost.

"Going into the Euros I wanted to be match-fit. The original plan was to do a season at Spurs and after the Euros still have a year left at Real Madrid.

"My plan is to go back, that's as far I have planned."

At Real, Bale has won four Champions League titles, two La Liga championships, one Copa del Rey, three Uefa Super Cups and three Club World Cups.

However, a run of injuries, indifferent form and a deteriorating relationship with manager Zinedine Zidane had seen Bale become a marginal figure in Spain.

As a result, last September, he moved back to Tottenham, whom he had first joined as a 17-year-old from Southampton in 2007 for an initial payment of £5m.

Bale initially found playing time limited at Spurs but he has been in excellent form recently and has scored 10 goals in 25 appearances in all competitions this season.

Best years are behind him.

Real Madrid should sell him on.

He will get plenty of good offers from MLS and China.

Chinese football is in crisis so there won't be any offers, as the state has clamped down on the money on offer. They have enacted a salary cap for individual players (roughly USD 80,000 per week for foreign players) and any club that breaks that cap will be automatically relegated. The low-hanging fruit for European clubs and players to earn easy money in China has been plucked.

The fact he is even talking about going back to Real Madrid tells you his motivation these days. He doesn't care if he is playing or not.

Tottenham will look into signing Stuttgart forward Nicholas Gonzalez this summer - with Gareth Bale set to return to Real Madrid.

Bale's game is more suited to English football. Should have never moved to Real Madrid in the first place.

Gareth Bale says he has made a decision on his future but will wait until after this summer’s Euros before he makes it public because it would “cause chaos”

Seems as if no one really wants Bale now. He is not the same player he was at Spurs first time round. Real do not seem desperate to have him back either seeing his astronomical wages it will be difficult to find a suitor. No I never want him at Liverpool, not our type of player. Joining Real Madrid can seriously ruin your career yet players find it impossible to resist when they come in for you.
