Mike Hesson turns down Pakistan, Bangladesh coaching jobs
Former Black Caps coach Mike Hesson has turned down two chances to return to the international coaching ranks after missing out on the India job.
Both Pakistan and Bangladesh's cricket boards chased Hesson for their vacant head coach roles, Stuff understands, but he declined and didn't officially apply to enter either race.
South African Russell Domingo was announced last week as Bangladesh's new coach, succeeding Englishman Steve Rhodes, while former captain Misbah-ul-Haq is the favourite to take over from Mickey Arthur in charge of Pakistan.
Hesson was named as a frontrunner for several international positions after he and Indian Premier League side Kings XI Punjab parted ways after one season at the helm. They finished sixth on net run rate this year after six wins and eight losses.
He made the final three for the India coaching job but incumbent Ravi Shastri got the nod. India's Cricket Advisory Committee of Kapil Dev, former coach Anshuman Gaekwad and former women's captain Shantha Rangaswamy listed their order of preference as Shastri, Hesson and Australian Tom Moody.
Hesson couldn't be reached for comment but, according to a source, he didn't contest the Pakistan and Bangladesh jobs because he wasn't keen to return to the punishing year-round schedule of international coaching and give up his television commitments with Star Sports.
He made an exception for India, the only international role he applied for, given its status as the biggest coaching job in world cricket.
After a successful six years at the helm of the Black Caps, making him New Zealand's longest serving coach, Hesson ended his stint last year, citing family reasons.
Hesson now appears likely to return to the IPL in an advisory or assistant coaching role, but for which team is unknown.
