Latest I'm hearing is that Smith and Warner will face a one year ban each. Along with Lehmann also getting the sack, our tour at the end of the year will be reminiscent of 2003/4 when Warne / McGrath were left out for different reasons.

These are Australia's main players, and Warner in particular loves batting on Australian decks.

Can we hope to win the test series?
 
If Smith doesnt play India should really make a play to win

A week ago I gave them no chance because Aus conditions and team are least suited to Indian team but if Smith who holds their batting together goes, Aus batting is at a mediocre level. Especially how Smith literally toys with India bowling

No there wont be and it shouldn't matter. India will play whatever team is put in front of them


For me an asterisk on a result has more grounds due to a result of injuries to major players or the best players sitting out due to a discriminatory policy (such as quotas) rather than due to players being banned of their own doing.

And besides. Aus have enough time to take that into account. Its not like its just a month or so before the series
 
Losing smith will be a huge blow for australia. As du plessis puts it 'worth 2 men to ausyralia'.
I dont think losing warner will have an impact on the outcome of the series. Smith bats for a long time and makes the bowlers look hopeless. And when he is in form . It almost comes as a shock when he gets out under 100 . Warner is a hit or miss and the bowlers are almost certain that he will get out eventually.
Overall i think the indians will fancy their chances as india's major hurdle last time around was Smith who scored 750 runs in 4 tests. Ind batters are able to score run in aus . We might see sa like hammering to aussies

ok checked . He played every match of the 2004 away series and averaged 76 as India drew

He played 2 matches in 2004 home series where he averaged 17 when he played and was 1-1 in terms of results

Nah. they have 9 months to get over this. That is enough time to get over any mental scar.

If Smith and Warner are out, it will definitely be advantage India, but by no means it means that India will win. Aus at home are a great side. Even Khwaja becomes Lara in Australia.
 
Teams like India and Australia are simply too strong at home, and will be tough to beat even if they are missing a couple of top players. Besides, I really don't see Smith or Warner getting a 1 year ban. CA should just stick with ICC's verdict and end things here.

They have blown the issue out of proportion and made it bigger than it is

Now ICC's punishment will look tame so will be forced to give higher punishment

I agree with both you and the OP.

India will do well - they may well win - but like the 2003-04 series minus McGrath and Warne, nobody will recognise India's success.

Of course it will help any teams chance with juggernaut smith and Warner out of the picture.
 
Smith and Warner being banned will be a big loss to Australia and if Lehmann is removed, as he should be, then the entire dressing room will be in turmoil, so India have a great chance to at least win a test or even draw the series. To win it outright would mean Aus are really mentally fried and I'm not sure that is the case.

If Aussies don't have Smith and Warner in the team I think we will win. India's biggest issue in Australia is our bowling's inability to take 20 wickets, 2 best Australian batsmen not playing goes long way in helping that problem.

India will also have to deal with Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins and Lyon. If these guys are not injured and mentally unaffected by the tampering, then I can't imagine India having it that easy.
 
India won't win even against 2nd Aus XI in Aus.

We dealt with them well enough last time. Our batting lineup is good enough on most days especially on batting tracks. Aussie pata pitches kill our bowling as it lacks 150 bowlers.

P.S. My above statement about India's batting is on the assumption that Kohli doesn't screw around with it.

Yes! Australians won’t tamper with the ball now. That actually increases our chance :)).

I don’t think they’re mentally rattled as a team. I actually expect them to play with greater intensity. If they keep losing after this incident, we know what people would say.
 
Aussies and Indians are very strong at home. Remember that Karun guy that scored a triple hundred against England at home?

We don't yet know what sort of cheating mafia ring aussie team operates. They seem to be pretty organized in everything.
 
Our best chance was 2011-12 series when Aussie team had lost Ashes at their home and were in transition.However we lost that series 4-0.
Yes if Smith does not play it will be a big blow but will not increase our chances by much.Renshaw,Joe burns etc are very capable batsmen and will make it difficult for our bowlers.
Also we have to remember the bowling attack remains the same for Aussies and it was our batting which let us down in SA series.
I predict it will be 2-1 or 3-1 in favor of Aussies.
 
Yes it will. Because for a long time now, Australian players will be shitscared to do any kind of shenanigans with the ball.
 
I am not sure if India can still win. You need genuine pace bowlers to beat Aus in Aus, which India doesn't have in tests. South Africa is the most succesful visiting team in Aus because they can take advantage of the bounce in Aussie pitches. Indian pacers can't exploit it
 
It can turn out similar to the recent ODI series in South Africa where South Africa were never full strength in any of the matches. Or Pakistan's first series win in the West Indies, who became a shadow of their former selves. A good achievement on paper but meaningless to anyone who knows their cricket.

India might still not win the series but they're in with a shot at drawing it, if Smith and Warner and possibly any of Khawaja, Marsh, Lyon, Starc and Hazlewood do not play.

Not just the bowlers, you also need batsmen that can score huge hundreds and pile on the runs to counter the Aussies' own scoreboard pressure. Baby hundreds won't win you anything in Australia.

Should be easier this time around with more scrutiny towards ball tampering. Iirc a few of our batsmen did score 150+ last time. Crossing 200 should be easier with no Taped Warner and Sandpapercraft.

Even a despieited Aussie bowling line up is good enough to rip through all Indian batsmen, except for Kohli and Rahane (if Rahane is in form). The likes of Dhawan and Rohit will be butchered mercilessly.
 
I personally would want us to face their best team and defeat them fair and square. But hey, victories against depleted sides are also celebrated. Eg. India vs SA ODIs, Pakistan Vs England test series etc.

It doesn’t matter, you guys would still come up with excuses like Australia missing stars, Aussies are minnows, etc.

Pujara, Rahane, Vijay, Kohli, etc are capable of scoring big hundreds and they will. India will draw or win the series this time.

Agree. However add KL. Performed well last time. KL, Murali, Kohli and Rahane. 2 decent, 1 good and 1 ATG. Not great, but not bad either. Beyond this we lack depth.

Yeah, it should be easier in terms of shattered Australian confidence but the pitches over there have improved.

Are you trying to say that the Australians will be at full-strength despite missing Smith and Warner and a couple others? It's not an excuse if it is the reality.

Indian batsmen like bounce so the batting should not be a problem. However, if they want to win the series, then they need to scored a double hundred in a single innings, not two baby hundreds in two different games. That is what South Africa have done in Australia and that is partly why they have won three consecutive series there.
 
Series is 9 months away. Jeez.

Australians will eventually find ways to win or draw the series.
 
Do people even check record how many teams actually win series in Aus?

No matter their team is no-one has done well in Aus ever except SA lately.

Drawing 2 tests last time by India is very good achievement for young indian team.
 
One thing will definitely happen - Kohli and India will get a far better reception from the crowd than they usually would have got after almost accusing Smith of cheating last year. Also expect a far ‘subdued’ on-field Australian team in the coming months

In terms of winning matches - better chance for sure if no Smith/warner are not there but will be still extremely difficult to beat them on home grounds. Kohli and co will have to play their heart out to have any decent chance against Starc and co
 
Australia's bowling strength does not change as a result of Smith and Warner not playing against the Indians !!!! Soooo ...... it will be up to the Indian Batsmen to put up some resistance and put up a decent score. If they do, then the Indian Bowlers will take care of the Australian Batting. Simple as that !!!!!

If Warner and Smith miss the UAE series vs Pakistan, then I'll be disappointed with anything less than a whitewash frankly given Australia's struggles against spin.
 
If India were playing a series in Australia next month, sure.

But it's 9 months away, Australia will have enough time to get over it mentally.

If they do lose Warner and Smith, that's big blow and well we will beat whom we will beat. Say we beat them even if they have the services of Warner and Smith, people you know who, will always come out and say, Oh but India never beat Australia when they had Gilly, Haydos and Ponting.

We will face who we will face, a win will still be a win.

Sour people can always bring it down, it wont count for anything less in the records.

Until yesterday, all "sources" said there could be year long ban for Smith and Warner could end up with much harsher punishment given his rogue behavior post ball tampering saga.

But if Sutherland's PC is anything to go by, it could be a lot, lot less.

Umm why would Kohli get a better reception?

He called Australian cheats, he said they aren't his friends anymore. He has a bad history there right from 2011, and why is everyone reacting like we are in Australia and the tour is just about to begin lol, people have really short attention span these days, post IPL people will not talk about this, let alone in the year end.
 
This will be weakest Aussies batting ever against India in Australia.

India must not lose this series , even a draw will be good result.
 
Well it would improve any teams chances, if there's no Warner opening and no Smith in the middle order.
 
Australia always find a way to beat teams at home even with their 2nd string teams.

A draw will be the best result India can get in Australia facing Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins, and Lyon.
 
The last time India played in Australia, Smith was really the thorn Indian bowlers couldn't remove. But again the fact is that Australia is playing at home and their batsmen average bradmanesque at home. So even though India have a chance, it will still be a tough tour.

Actually previous Indian losses in Aus should carry asterisks given that we have no idea whether the ball was tampered with.
 
The only batsmen in the Indian team are Kohli and Rahane the Aussie public like Rahane but they don't like Kohli and his crap.

Unless Indian bowlers can find form in Australia they will get smashed and will be harder for India to win.

I don't think India can win in Australia only SA in the last few years have managed to win.

They had a good balance in the batting and the bowling.

You need bowlers to win test.

I think it will be a closer series but doubt India can win.

Don't know about that, but there's no doubt that India is currently the best team in the world by some fare distance.

The way they toyed with southafrica in southafrica is a testimony of their true potential. There's no doubt about the fact that If they can somehow conquer Australia they will be considered as the second best in the history of cricket after that invincible Australian team of 2000.

Why will Kohli care if he gets good reception? His revival started with 'that' phenomenal Aussie series where he made 4 hundreds and people hated his guys then too. Indian bowling unit is decent now and the games will be much closer than last time. India might even win a game or two

They toyed with South Africa, but still lost?

The current Indian team is nothing special.

The game is about getting 20 wickets, which will be extremely hard for Indian pacers.

IMO Australia are still favorites against any SC team in Australia.

I can picture likes of Khwaja getting 100s against SC trundlers.

Indian bowling attack is very good (though I think flat pattas are still their worse type of pitches)

Khawaja may put up runs at home but he only has done it primarily around Smith... No tin this case
 
Ofcourse A LOT can change in 7-8 months but if India were playing in Australia next month Id back India. Honestly if they dont pull it off now I bet no subcontinental side may ever win there in our lifetimes
 
Any team with series in Aus for the next year will not get such a chance again, take it with both hands

I agree the pitches are at their flattest ever in Australia but they still have some guys who can score heavily at home. Khawaja is still around, I'm not sure who the other replacements will be. It's also important to remember Lyon is even better now, Starc is in his prime, Hazlewood is superb and all are better than anyone India has at the moment.

Kohli, Pujara and co will have to score heavily, really heavily.

Pakistan had a couple of moments but umpiring and ATG performances saved Aussies.

If Aussies stop taking their cricket seriously then we may have a chance tho.
 
They will never get a golden opportunity like this. Dravid and Tendulkar missed a golden opportunity of true greatness by refusing to put away a weak South African side in 2007.
The relative strength of the opposition is non of your business, your job is to win games for your country.
Kohli has a golden opportunity here to grab greatness by the throat.

Australia are slowly building a side that will go decades before losing at home again, not even South Africa can win there going forward. Australia's pace attack will be around for the next 8 years at least.
They need a #5 or 6 to complement Warner and Smith and they'll have a monster of a side.

Not that you need an incentive to win in Australia, but if India were not motivated to win there, they should be now. They have the bowling attack to take 20 wickets in any conditions. It's going to be a cracker of a series.
