I say it as a fan of Yousuf and his sublime touch, wonderful batsman - is Virat Kohli the man to break his record for most test runs in a calendar year, or most centuries, or both?

Before the specific brigade comes in, let me tell their opinions.

Kohli is HTB.
He scored in Aus but they were flat tracks.
He scored in SA/NZ (against deprived attacks) but in losing causes.
He has not been able to buy a run in ENG, Duh.

Mohd. Yousuf set stage on fire everywhere he went including WCs.

No comparison at all.

I doubt anyone will with the number of current limited overs games in a calender year nowadays. Kohli for India chooses to rest more so now against smaller nations. Obviously missing out on easy test runs which could aid him.

An Englishman will surely. They play many tests.

Only one currently would be Root, he’d have to have some year, his current conversion rate isn’t the best - glass half full though as he’s got pedigree.

:)

Kohli well on his way to becoming one of the greatest, brilliant player with some stunning innings.

Yousuf a masterful batsman in his own right, those hundreds in England are very rewatchable.

Mohammed yousuf played 11 tests to reach that mile stone. But he was in a red hot form and had 99+ avg and this is once in a blue moon performance I don't think any batsman will break this record in near future

That will be difficult to break. Virat is not that consistent in Tests to score that many runs in a year.

Honesty is the best policy.

There was no comparison made in the OP.

Kohli in 2014 in England was a completely different player to the current Kohli in 2018. Kohli has scored runs all across the globe and will in all probability score heaps in England as well at some point in his career if not this summer.

Kohli's hunger to better himself makes him the prime candidate to break Yousuf's record. Just as Yousuf had a purple patch in 2006, there's nothing to suggest that Kohli can't have that same purple patch.

i don't think India are playing many tests in the next 2-3 years (with this test championship schedule on the horizon other than England)

Smith (assuming he will be an equally great player after his ban) is more likely to break all sorts of test records than Kohli.

Why? lets see how he does in this test series first. He may do so but I just feel he is still vulnerable around the offstump..the ball slightly moving away on offstump..

For that record to be broken, Kohli needs to play a couple of series against the likes of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh or West Indies. Currently, he will be playing Eng, NZ and Aus in their backyard. So, won't be easy and he will enter into 30s post that. So, let's see. Such records aren't too easy to be broken.

yes he can but would be difficult this year.He has to score over 1500 runs in 10 remaining tests(likely).5 in England,2 vs Wi in India and 3 in Australia.

If he played like 7-8 tests in Pakistan and UAE and then toured England when they laid out the flattest pitches ever he probably would.

Having said that there is no doubt Yousuf was a better test batsman than Kohli.

MOYO was bradman for one year and rohit sharma for the rest of his career.

Kohli vs Yasir Shah in the UAE would have been some battle. Such a shame!:yasir

Kohli would have destroyed Yazzy on those shameful flat and slow pitches of UAE. In India however provided good spinning pitches Yazzy would have been a huge challenge for Inzy batters.

Kohli vs Ajmal would have been more interesting. Kohli is adept against leggies but struggles against off spinners for some reason. Same goes for Rahane.

India are lucky or should i say clever to have not played Pakistan in India in tests during Ajju era.

Greatest spinner since Warne/Murali era.

Greatest ODI spinner of all time and generations.

It will be very hard but the record means nothing. Kohli is already the better batsman.

Kohli can break the record but it's not vital for his career to break the record.
