The new stadium will be third largest cricket stadium in the world after the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera and the Melbourne Cricket Stadium in Australia that can hold 132,000 and 100,024 spectators respectively.

The Rajasthan Cricket Academy said it will construct the world’s third-largest cricket stadium in Jaipur with capacity for 75,000 spectators at estimated cost of ₹300 crore

Rajasthan Cricket Association President Vaibhav Gehlot said that the stadium’s construction work in Chomp village on Jaipur-Delhi highway will be completed by RCA in about two and a half years.

“It will be the third-largest stadium in the world. In which 75,000 spectators will be able to enjoy the match. The stadium will be constructed in two phases - In phase-1, 40,000 spectators capacity will be built with 11 cricket pitches, two practice grounds, one cricket academy, a hostel, parking facility, sports club, hotel and gym,” said Vaibhav Gehlot.

Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) commissioner Gaurav Goyal said the construction work for both phases will take 5-years to complete.

An RCA official said it will get infrastructure grant of ₹100 crore for the project from Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and another ₹100 crore will be raised from bank loans.

The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has handed over land lease deed to the cricket body for the stadium. The RCA will soon issue tenders for the construction, which is likely to start by September, the Rajasthan cricket body said.

They need to ensure that the Boundaries are larger than 90m each side. Its embarrassing to watch matches at Wankhede / Eden Gardens / Chinnaswamy type of grounds.

Don't feel any modern Indian cricket stadiums will ever come close to capturing the noise levels and sheer delirium (in a good way) that used to be the case at the Eden Gardens back in its heyday when it held 100,000 spectators. I wish they'd redevelop it and increase the capacity again, best stadium in India for neutrals. Always produced great test pitches as well, which is a bonus.

Yep, I am an Urban Planner and my company is Architectural Consultants for the Jaipur Stadium.

Will share the Architectural Views, when the design Matures to the level which is implementable.

Why not renovate more mainstream stadiums rather than these ones in the hinterland that are not even test centres?

What are the odds on it being named as the Amit Shah cricket stadium?

Rajasthan is a Congress ruled state. The Dhokla-in-chief can't win there.

So perhaps it would become the Ashok Gehlot stadium.

Unfortunate that none of our stadiums are named after cricketers.

If it was to be named after a cricketer, who would it be, maybe a famous cricketer from Rajisthan?

Nope
Current RCA (Rajasthan Cricket Association) Management is not from that Shah Group. Its Congress Supported Group

Since RCA dont have its own stadium they were using State owned Sawai Mansingh stadium till now. Now they want their own stadium, that is the reason they are coming up with this project.

Same was the case for almost all states untill few years back. Most of the sports infrastructure was owned by State Govt of Local Municipal Corporations. Since those stadiums were free for all, they were usually not cricket ready for international fixtures throughout the year and state associations were required to pay rent for the usage of stadiums for international or domestic fixtures.

Now things have changed with influx of money by BCCI, Most of the cricket associations now have their own stadiums or planning to develop their own stadiums, through revenue share from BCCI.

There is new thought going on Now.
To attract crowd to Test Cricket BCCI is planning to make more Test Venues apart from Mainstream ones.

Two Test Matches in Tier 2 City Indore; one against New Zealand and other against Bangladesh were both sold out for all days.

for Smaller cities International Cricket Match is like a Festival, you will get full house.

Atleast you don't have a major stadium named after a long dead megalomaniacal dictator from Libya...

A dictator in the eyes of the west, but a man who knew how to run his country in my eyes. You’re just brainwashed by the western media, you believe everything you see on the tv, sad.

Does India need more stadiums? So much money being wasted on stadiums these days but when you actually go there and sit it still feels like 90s stadium where people are filled like wild goats. If we want to build good stadiums then we should at least have stadiums like South Africa. There is so much open space, greenery and people actually sit like normal human beings. There are not treated like caged animals. But we are talking about India where quantity is preferred over quality. :inti

Since you clearly have no idea what the word 'dictator' means, and couldn't even be bothered to google it, I'll tell you what it means.

According to the Oxford dictionary: a dictator is a ruler with total power over a country, typically one who has obtained control by force.

Gaddafi seized power in Libya in 1969 after a military coup and then ruled the country for the next 42 years. Therefore he perfectly fits the definition of a dictator.

The good and bad things that he did for Libya are completely beside the point. And have nothing to do with the undisputable fact that he was a dictator.

Excellent point and glad that BCCI is paying attention to such details most fans might not think of.

Hope its not another eye sore like the Modi stadium.

Players are loving the ultra modern facilities.

Fans are glad they can watch the game in comfort.

All that matters

Jaipur: The foundation stone of the world’s third largest cricket stadium was laid on the Jaipur-Delhi bypass on Saturday. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, vice-president Rajiv Shukla and secretary Jay Shah attended the ceremony virtually.

Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) chief Vaibhav Gehlot, former president CP Joshi and other officials performed the bhoomi-poojan.

Expressing his delight, Chief Minister Gehlot said, “Today is a golden opportunity for Rajasthan cricket. Former RCA president CP Joshi saw the dream of RCA having its own stadium in Jaipur and now the professional cricket environment is being created in the state. As 7 out of 10 big stadiums in the world are in India, this stadium of Rajasthan shall be in third place in the world which is a matter of pride for the players of Rajasthan and the people of the state.”

He further added that having Deepak Chahar, Mahipal, Rahul Chahar, Khaleel Ahmed and now Ravi Bishnoi in the Indian team is a big achievement. “It is expected that now the BCCI will not allow Rajasthan to be ignored,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ganguly said that a lot of resources have been developed in the last ten years. “Today BCCI is the leading cricket board in the world. I have spent many days in Jaipur. The SMS stadium here is wonderful. But now the world’s third largest stadium is being built here in Jaipur which is a matter of happiness.”

“I am somewhat disappointed that my Kolkata stadium will now come to the last position. A lot of players are playing for the country from Rajasthan. Hope we will continue to play and bring laurels to the country.”

RCA president Vaibhav said that “we aim to complete the project of this international stadium in two and a half to three years”.

“An International Cricket Stadium is being built on 100 acres of land in Jaipur. It will be the second largest stadium in the country and the third largest in the world. In this, the seating capacity of 75000 spectators will be developed. The stadium will be constructed in 2 phases. This stadium will have 11 cricket pitches, 2 practice grounds, a cricket academy besides hostel, parking, sports club, hotel and gym facilities, which will be of international level.”

The world’s largest stadium is Motera stadium in Ahmedabad which has a capacity of around 1.10 lakh spectators. Second largest stadium is Australia’s Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) which has a capacity of one lakh spectators.

wish u all the v best bro!...and yes will be good to see this when you put it up. Any chances of any grassy knolls without seating, like in Hamilton nz, or hobart aus or a few SL and saf grounds? I feel those really add character to a stadium.

Pretty sure this is being done for RR. They chose neutral venues over Jaipur pre-pandemic because the capacity was simply too low.

Gate revenue is going to be massive in years to come with rising ticket prices. 10 years down the line we could see EPL style management of stadiums where Clubs own, develop stadium and ticket sales being a big part of the club revenue.

Also having a profitable stadium that brings in massive revenue can bump up that club net-worth too while bringing in future investors.

Not to mention leaving a bitter taste on the tongue and giving you ear ache, imagine having to say or hear that name when referring to the stadium.

You are right. A lot of Indian new stadium construction or renovations seem to also have IPL in mind.

No Chance Man. Though we would have loved to incorporate such features. But Clients (Rajasthan Cricket Association) requirements dont allow.
These Features are only possible in sub 25000 capacity stadiums with large feild of Play.
Here in India, its about demand and supply. Looking at Rush for tickets in high profile matches, Cricket Associations dont think about developing a Low Capacity, Aesthetically apealing Stadiums.

It will be an as usual Colosseum Like Structure to Maxmimise Capacity. But our team has tried to minimise the Mass and miximise the viewning experience along with world class facilities for Players, Spectators, Broadcasters and Media

But one notable fact in design of this stadiums, which nobody has mentioned yet in News reports is

It will have world largest feild of play, with 11 Pitches, 5 central pitches for International Games and it will have good boundary lengths even if the Last Pitch on either side will be used (1st or 11th)

The stadium Bowl is designed in such a way that every seat will have good view up to Boundary Rope beneath.

Yep I will share the detailed images Soon. Was waiting for Rajasthan Cricket Association to unveil the Design themselves first. If I share it first, I will be screwed by my Company and Rajasthan Cricket Association for flouting Confidentiality Clause in our Agreement with them.

Now that the Foundation stone has been laid and we have shared a walk through for finalized design with RCA for the Ceremony. They will make it public. Some of the Views have already made it to Media.

Good move by Rajasthan. India desperately needs some big stadiums. Most cities have small capacity stadiums leading to big mismatch in demand - supply and thus ticket prices become exorbitant.

Mumbai with almost 15 million people has Wankhede stadium - capacity 33,000. Delhi with 10 million people have Feroz Shah Kotla - capacity 40,000. As a result ticket prices for normal games or IPL are so expensive by Indian standards

I hope all metro build such giant stadiums like Motera ( capacity - 100k ) . Will make it easier on the pocket for middle class folks like us

Yep, I Agree.
It's good to have such large stadiums, but one need to look at feasibility too.

India plays around 35-40 ODI's/T20Is and 10-14 Test Matches a Year. Considering half of the fixtures are Home fixtures and presence of so-many stadiums/venues in India, any stadium in India will hardly get 1 or max 2 international fixtures a year, and sometimes some venues get host an international fixtures once in 2-3 Years

So we have 1 International Fixture and 7 IPL Fixtures which are revenue generating days for any mainstream Stadium in any state. Even if you have 10 Ranji Fixtures and 10 Domestic List A and T20 Fixtures; they are not revenue generating fixtures.

There is huge Capital Investment required for a high capacity stadiums. Ahmadabad Stadium cost close to INR (Indian Rupee) 8-9 Billion (for 1 lakh + plus capacity) and Jaipur Stadium with 75000 Capacity will cost INR 6.5-7.0 Billion.

To meet the INR 6.5-7.0 Billion investment for Jaipur Stadium; BCCI has given RCA, INR 1 Billion as Grant, INR 2.5 Billion will be raised from Licensing of Corporate Boxes and Seats and another INR 1.5- 2.0 Billion will be raised from Hotel/Convention Center/Club and Commercial Licenses. Further these revenue streams apart from Grants, don't come instantly and will be earned over a period of time. So RCA has to avail loans for initial investment and cost of debt will also have to be earned back.

Thus close to 20% of the Investment initial investment and another 20% of the investment as Debt Cost have to be earned back through these limited International and IPL Fixtures. Further RCA is also required to spend on Annual Maintained cost of such Facility, which will reduce net earnings from Ticket Sales and Stadium Advertisements.

Since any International Fixture or IPL Fixture will only earn about INR 15-20 Million per Fixture, It will be a Huge ask to Generate such amount (40% of Investment INR 2.6-2.8 Billion) from Ticket Sales, Stadium Advertisements, Naming rights of Stands alone and may require up to 10-15 Years for cost recovery.

Thats a pity, i have experienced first hand how much fun is tobe had when sitting on a grassy knoll and watch cricket albeit test cricket is more fun when sitting here as comapred to the hustle and bustle of white ball cricket but i suppose commercial interests rule everywhere. good point about field of play, a point that is mised by a lot of people. So u r saying if the match is played on the 1st pitch or 11th pitch it will not offer a shorter legsied or offside boundary to a lh or rh player. Am glad to note u have mentioned viewer experience - that is so important and neglected aspect in a lot of indian stadiums. When will this be completed and when will first match be played?

Just saw the link, how exciting! It also looks like it has a roof, does that mean 100 pc of spectators will have protection from sun (depending on sun angle and time of day off course)-does that mean the lowest row would have sun protection? Also in top half of the video in your link it shows flood light towers, but the bottom half - no tall floodlight towers - will it be LED lights ring of fire like in Shri Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmd?
the vdo also shows the two ourter grounds, what are they for? Thanks for sharing thelink!

ICC has following standards regarding Boundary lengths,

Any Straight Boundary shall not be less than 64 meters,
Shorter of the Square Boundaries shall not be less than 59.43 meters.
And no boundary shall be more than 82.29 meters.

So based on the filed of play available and pitch being used match officials adjust their Boundary rope to fit the requirements. I dont know how strictly it is followd in cramped venues.

Now comming to RCA Stadium the 1st and 11th pitch if adjusted to maximise Boundary will allow 68 meters boundary on one side and 82.29 meters (maximum permited on other side).
The Straight Boundary possible at this stadium is equal to maximum permitted by ICC thats 82.29 meters.

Now its up to the match officials and organisers if they follow the principal of maximising boundary lengths to the threshold of 82.29 meters.

It is seen in the T20I League cricket, that organisers tend to pull in boundary ropes in to bare minimum boundary lengths to maximise runs scoring.

Its tough question to answer, when the first match will be played. It is proposed to be constructed in 2.5 to 3 years time.

Regarding the Viewer experience the Roof Structure is cantilever type which doesnot require any columns in the stands. With no columns in the stands, it will provide unobstructed feild of play view.

The roof will cover 60% of the Bowl (100% of upper Bowl and 50% of the Lower Bowl) at Noon.

Regarding Lighting both 8 Tower LED lighting and Roof Ring LED lighting options are proposed. One of them will be finalised.

The two other Grounds are for Cricket Training Academy with Practice Facilities.

Well am glad that at most given times of the day more than 75 pc of stadium would be covered/protected from sunlight.
I think when it t comes to spectator comfort, it wont be much fun sitting inthe sun the whole day for a day odi or a test match especially in india in summers. I feel this is the most overlooked, underated factor -just in the intrests of the average johny dude who brings his two young kids to give them a first hand feel of a big match but faces discomfort.
Out of intrests, what are the cricketing pro's and con's for 8 towers or ring of fire LED lighting? ie - does it affect viewrship of the game either inside the stadium or on TV? Wonder if outfielders feel the difference when they go for a high catch...would there be major difference in costs to set both up? I would imagine as an archtitect / planner like you - the towers would be harder to factor, plan, design and construct.

Wow....hats off :salute

No pillars or coloums would enhance spectator experience. I assume the ground drainage facilities would be top class as well.

Am sure the boundary on the oval shaped multipurpose EDen park ground in Auckland, NZ on which rugby is played in the off season has shorter boundaries than 59.43 on one side...once i saw jesse ryder just tap it over the fine leg fielder to go for 6...i coujld be wrong though :)

Cricketing pros and cons can only be described by an active cricketer who has first hand experience of playing under both types of lights.

As spatial planner I can only tell about how it may or may not affect players/spectators.

Both Lighting systems (if designed properly), provide sufficient lux levels to illuminate the playing area to required levels for play to happen.

As far as impact on players are concerned Batsman/Bowler/Wicket keeper for their usual functionality of batting/bowling/wicket keeping don't get affected by either of lighting system, because there is forbidden zone (as per Standards) 30 degrees (V Area) on either side, where these lights are not allowed to be installed; be it Tower (High masts) or Roof Ring Lights. You may have noticed there is gap in the Roof Ring lights in V Area of either end and there are no tower (high masts) in the Forbidden V area on either end.

And you are right Fielders, Bowlers/Wicketkeepers (all of them while attempting high catch) get affected by where the lights are. The probability of Lights coming in between catchers view of the lofted ball in case of Roof Ring Light (since Roof ring is lined source of Light) is more than a Tower lights (which is point source). Thus in my opinion tower lighting is better than roof ring lighting for players point of view.

As far as spectators are concerned the only difference both lightings have Roof ring lights don't show any shadow of players or stadium roofing, while spectators may see shadows of players and roof (only if not placed properly) in Tower Lighting system.

Now coming to the cost the tower lighting system is costlier than roof ring lighting system, since it has to be mounted on Columns.

And you are right designing a roof ring lighting system is easier than Tower Lighting System, where you need to factor in angles, No of towers required, their placement and shadow analysis for roof etc.

Yes the Straight Boundary is shorter than required, the square boundaries are quite long.

Case of Eden park Auckland is unique, where the stadium is designed for Rugby where the field is oriented East/West with length in east west direction and while converting it to Cricket field (where pitch is required to be oriented in North/South Direction) the straighter boundaries get short and Square Boundaries are longer than straighter boundaries.

Since they use drop in pitches, these pitches are dropped right at center so there is no boundary lengths difference on square boundaries on Off and Leg side.

And since Straight boundary is barely 55 odd meters on either end, the Boundaries at Deep/Deep fine third man, Long leg and Deep fine leg are further shorter (45 odd meters). And you are right I remember Deep fine leg is where Jesse Ryder used to tap the ball for six in the one of India/NZ Series.
