What's new

World Cinema (excluding Hollywood, Bollywood, Lollywood etc)

If anyone is into sci-fi time travel, recently saw 'Timecrimes". Great movie.

If anyone is into Sci-FI time travel, recently saw "Timecrimes". Great movie. Guy goes a few hours back in time accidentally and wants to kill his old self as he thinks he is the real one. End up time traveling a third time, with three of them occupying the same time zone just few hours to mins apart. Gives rise to interesting moral and psychological questions.

Sleep Tight- creepy Spanish movie about a janiter, who enjoys making life miserable for tenants. Must watch!

I watched Valhalla Rising recently. The worst movie I've seen in 2013 and the best at the same time...

Name 3 best world cinema movies of last decade , after a cursory look may I say that these 3 are the best of them

City of God
The secret in their eyes
Old Boy

????

The three mentioned are great films The following films would also easily fit into most peoples top 3

Memories of murder
Amores Perros
Color of Paradise
Walts with bashir
The lives of others
Sympathy for mr vengeance
Infernal Affairs

Im sure that ive missed quite a few too that are genuinely top 3 quality films Theres just too many to mention

I saw the Devil as well. Not an original story but very harrowing and blurs the line between hero and villain. Brilliant execution. Stars the protagonist from Oldboy as the one of the most depraved human beings ever.

Au Revoir Les Enfants.

About a French school housing Jewish children during the Nazi occupation. Quietly dark and gripping.

I just downloaded 50gb of Japanese horror movies. I plan not to sleep for the next year or so.

I have that on BluRay. Awesome.

I watched The Hunt starring Mads Mikkleson. Brilliantly acted.

Stalingrad , Das Boot two great anti war German movies.

secret in their eyes was just amazing, so was das boot

Italian murder mystery genre known as Giallo. So much style oozing out of those flicks apart from the gore and sleaze.

Swedish thriller False Trail, nothing extravagant or mind blowing about it Just well written a great cast, a solid enjoyable film

8/10

Watched an italian movie L'iniziazione which revolves around a teenage boy it was fun to watch ;-)

The Man from Nowhere was pretty good though it fell squarely in the category of movies like Leon, Man on Fire, etc. It's very well made though and the fight scenes are superb.

PS: This is the teaser for The Raid 2:Berandal. The first one was a damn rush!!! As usual, Hollyweird is remaking the first one.

A brilliant movie from Israel. The scene where the father talks to the suspect describing the killer's MO pushes this movie into horror territory effortlessly.

You have to watch this black comedy thriller. Really funny and disturbing at the same time. Very much like Tarantino and Coen Bros' twisted movies. You laugh when you least expect it and just when you are getting cozy, you get a gut punch.

I wonder why, Not many are speaking of City of God (Cidade de Deus) ... The greatest underworld movie ever made... It was nominated for 4 oscars in foreign category ....
ImDb rating of 8.7 and #21 in Imdb Top 250

Having watched 1505 western movies till now & still remains my favourite Underworld movie...

I Seriously recommend u all folks :)

I saw Raid. Badass movie. Believe me, you do not want to know what A Serbian Film is. Pretentious vile garbage. Atleast Tom Six has the guts to call his Human Centipede series as the freak shows that they are.

The lucky thing for Iko owais which sadly Tony Jaa doesnt have is a good film director ....

Tony Jaa movies often directed by Prachya Pinkaeu have poor silly stories & no material except for breathe taking stunts ... same is the case for Jija Yanin..
But in the case of Iko uwais, He has a superb creative director in 'gareth evans' who make the stories & content equally exciting as the daredevil action :13:

Desperately waiting for Raid's sequal 'Berandal' :123:

Thanks for the warning abt serbian films.... It would be torcherous to watch a garbage with a help of Sub-Titles only :55: :asif

Heard good things. Is it available on DVD yet?

I am very much looking forward forward to The Raid 2- apparently, it surprasses Part 1. Part 3 will be set three hours before The Raid 2 finishes. Madness.

Recently saw a Korean movie called No Mercy. If you love revenge movies, you'll be shocked. 10/10 Highly recommended.

Renoir

A French movie about the famous impressionist painter of the same name at the twilight of his career and his relationship with his son who will later become a world famous movie director. To be honest, I saw the movie to watch the female model but still, not a bad movie.

Anyone here seen "Enter the Void"......one long LSDish ride in and around Tokyo, through the eyes of a ghost who is obsessed with her "dancer" sister, ending in one of most weirdest yet innovative scene to have ever come across cinema. This movie can only be fully enjoyed with some quality herbs.

What's it about? Might check this out.

Its a courtroom civil rights type drama not particularly original. The 1980s Korean setting and the excellent Song Kang-Ho separate it from other generic court room dramas however. I really enjoyed it.

Inspired by early life of South Korean president Roo Moo-Hyun and his fight for democracy.

Wild Tales (2015)

Superb anthology movie from Spain compromising of six short movies...all about revenge.

9/10

Fan of Korean cinema. Some of their movies are awesome

Yeah. Have recently watched The Attorney, The Host and Memories of Murder.

The way these two films execute and blend humour in with grim reality backed up by an overarching political theme without sounding too preachy - it's quite amazing. Their sense of humour caught me off guard in all three Korean movies I have seen.

oh there are too many damn good korean movies to name.. a remake of hong kong movie a better tomorrow, also named a better tomorrow.

Shiri, which is 10-15 years old, awesome awesome movie. Old Boy which has been remade by Bollywood and Hollywood. The Host, I saw the Devil, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, Man from Nowhere.. just to name a few.

They are what Hong Kong cinema used to be at one point, .. well actually better. I remember in the 80s and 90s when Chow Yun Fat movies directed by John Woo set the bar high but Korean movies are a notch above in my opinion.

By the way, one of the all time great non Hollywood movies has to be the Hong Kong movie Infernal Affairs which was remade by Hollywood as the Departed.

Crows Zero part 1 and 2, if anyone was into Anime this movie would be amazing.

Yeah seen all of them except Man from nowhere and Lady vengeance. Old boy literally had the best action sequence I have ever seen in cinema history.

Man From Nowhere is exceptional. Typically brilliant Korean movie.

I Saw The Devil if the best one I have watched to date.

Lady Vengeance is very stylised but still a decent film. I think Oldboy is probably the most balanced of the Vengeance Trilogy.

I preferred the Infernal Affairs Trilogy over the Departed, which is almost a line for line rip-off.

Yeah enjoyed the originals and didn't really give Scorsese remake the time of day at first as it was a scene for scene remake almost.

But then watched it critically once, and it really struck me as a very well crafted film. Half the challenge is the style change into the American gangster scene, and the cast. Both of these were perfected I thought. Amazing cast. Hard to not fall in love with it.

The Wailing is the next big movie from Korea. Receiving highly rated praise.

Some awesome Korean movies I caught up on:

The Chaser
The Wailing- very unsettling..will watch it again as it messes with your head
Train To Busan- one of the best zombie movie going

I remember watching "Cannibal Holocaust" (Italian) some years back. Never been more disturbed by a movie. It's peak "Neo-relism" in filmmaking.

Yes it's up there for me too but no movie disturbed me as much as Antichrist. It's unbelievable. Very good movie though

Agreed. The director was even quizzed in court to prove the events of the movie were not real.

Yeah , that what makes this movie so frightening for me. It jut feels SO REAL . The camera, the acting and even the decisions the people in the movie make.

Antichrist or Hostel or made-to-disturb films like "A serbian film" or "the human centipede" are all made with a certain shock - cinematic value in mind. But this film makes a movie as if it were a documentary and still manages to scare/disturb you.

Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer were epic and great laughs, both are from China.

I also saw The Raid (Indonesian) which is good but the action is just endless. Its like those all kung fu video, but instead of playing your watching.

It's just non stop extreme action. Thoroughly enjoyed it

Talking about the raid
