An official says a passenger bus slid off a mountain road and fell 200 feet into a ravine in heavy rain.

A passenger bus slid off a mountain road and fell into a deep ravine in heavy rain in southwest Pakistan on Sunday, killing 19 people and injuring 12 others, a government official said.

Mahtab Shah, assistant administrator for the district of Shirani in Baluchistan province, said about 35 passengers were travelling in the bus. He said rescue workers were searching for survivors in the wreckage of the destroyed vehicle and surroundings.

Mr. Shah said apparently the bus slid on the wet road amid heavy rain and the driver lost control of the vehicle, which fell about 200 feet (61 metres) into the ravine.

Deadly road accidents are common in Pakistan due to poor road infrastructure and disregard for traffic laws, as well as poorly maintained vehicles. Last month, 22 people were killed in a similar accident when a bus fell into a ravine in Qila Saifullah district.

This is so devastating. When will people learn not to travel through routes that are even more dangerous during heavy rains on these poor vehicles.

Wedding party meets tragedy as river claims at least 21 lives near Machka in Punjab

Wedding party meets tragedy as river claims at least 21 lives near Machka in Punjab

RAHIM YAR KHAN: At least 19 women and two children drowned while several others went missing after a boat carrying more than 100 wedding guests capsized in the Indus River near Machka police limits, some 65km from here, on Monday.

More than 100 participants of a Solangi clan marriage party were coming back from union council Khrore — in the riverbed area of tehsil Rojhan in district Rajanpur — to Hussain Bakhash Solangi village in Machka UC of Sadiqabad when the boat capsized, apparently due to overloading and high tide.

According to Rescue 1122 sources, they received a call from the Machka police station house officer that a boat carrying over 100 passengers had capsized.

A handout said that 90 passengers were rescued by locals and the district administration while 19 women and two children’s bodies were also recovered.

RYK Deputy Commissioner Syed Musa Raza told Dawn that more than 80 passengers were rescued, 19 bodies of women passengers recovered and search was in progress for the remaining missing people.

He said 35 divers of Rescue 1122 were taking part in the search operation with the help of local divers.

The Rescue 1122 statement said their personnel immediately reached the spot with five ambulances, water rescue van and 30 rescuers.

However, Sadiqabad Assistant Commissioner Saleem Asai put the death toll at 23, including 19 women and four children.

Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz has ordered the district administration to speed up the rescue operation.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah have directed the administration of Kashmore district — Sindh’s nearest area to Sadiqabad — to provide all possible assistance in the search operation and use the services of divers from Pakistan Navy in case of need.

According to Rescue in-charge, the operation was stopped due to darkness and will resume on Tuesday morning.

Machka is known as an area of Mazari Sardars. According to some locals, more than 150 passengers on two boats were on their way for a wedding ceremony and both boats were moving against the tide. One boat was overloaded and the boatman could not control the balance and it overturned.

The groom Shehzad, along with his mother were among the passengers who were rescued by the residents.

The locals said residents of the riverine area have relatives across the river and they have been using boats for transportation for the last many years because the bridges on the Indus at Guddu and Bangla Ichha were quite a long way from their area.

They said the wedding party was crossing the Indus strip from this location because it was considered safe. The neighbouring areas are notorious for gangsters who kidnap people for ransom.

Police spokesperson Saif Ali Wains told Dawn that initially, a Machka team reached the spot and rescued more than 45 passengers with the help of locals. He said initial information about the incident was received quite late because the site was in the middle of the river and there was no cell phone reception in the area.

APP reported that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his deep grief over the loss of precious lives. In a statement via his Twitter handle, the prime minister prayed for the departed souls.

Terrible news. Rip

More than 50 people have been killed in two separate travel-related accidents in Pakistan on Sunday.

At least 41 people died when a bus fell into a ravine and caught fire in the south-west, while in the north-west at least 10 children drowned in a boating accident.

All the dead recovered so far at the lake were aged between seven and 14.

At the bus crash site, a local official said the bodies were "beyond recognition".

The crash occurred near the southern city of Bela, in Balochistan Province, when it was travelling to the port city of Karachi.

Local official Hamza Anjum told AFP news agency that 40 bodies were found alongside three injured people, one of whom died shortly after. The two remaining survivors were in a "serious" condition.

The bus reportedly hit a pillar on a bridge before the crash.

"We will investigate the causes of the accident," Mr Anjum said, adding that DNA tests would be used to determine the identity of the remains.

The boat capsized on Tanda Dam, a lake near Kohat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, close to the border with Afghanistan.

Local police official Mir Rauf told AFP that as well as the 10 who died, 11 children had been rescued, with six in critical condition. Another nine are believed to be missing.

This is a fascinating article regarding the attitude towards road deaths in Pakistan. Basically the jist is that the deaths were pre-ordained by the divine and nothing could be or can be done by anyone to avoid them.

In contrast here in the UK after a major accident reports are compiled, recommendations are made to reduce the chances of a incident happening again.

At least 13 people, including five women, were killed and 31 others injured when a bus veered off the Islamabad-Lahore Motorway and overturned near Kallar Kahar on Saturday, official and rescue sources said.

The incident came as a grim reminder of the February tragedy, when a bus had hit two cars and a truck before falling into a ravine near Kallar Kahar, leaving 14 members of a wedding party, including women and children, dead and 64 others injured. The apparent cause of that crash was a burst tyre.

This time, police said, driver lost control over the steering apparently due to a ‘brake failure’.

According to officials, two lanes of the motorway were closed for traffic after the accident.

17 killed as truck carrying pilgrims plunges into ravine in Balochistan’s Hub

At least 17 people were killed while over 40 sustained injuries after a truck carrying pilgrims plunged into a ravine in Balochistan’s Hub district on Wednesday, officials said.

Hub Assistant Superintendent of Police Ahmed Talha Wali confirmed the death toll and injuries to Dawn.com. He said the truck, carrying 50 people, was en route to the Shah Noorani shrine in Khuzdar from Thatta.

He said the incident took place at 10pm last night, adding that critically wounded persons had been referred to the Jam Ghulam Qadir Hospital in Hub and Civil Hospital’s Trauma Centre in Karachi.

Earlier, Manan Baloch, the Edhi Foundation’s Hub in-charge, said that the rescue operation to retrieve the bodies and injured concluded Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Munir Ahmed told AFP that the truck was overspeeding and went out of the driver’s control while negotiating a turn.

In a statement issued earlier today, Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives, according to state-run Radio Pakistan.

He directed officials to provide the best health facilities to injured people.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also expressed deep grief at the high number of casualties and prayed for the families of the deceased. He also visited the Civil Hospital’s Trauma Centre and met with the injured persons.

Speaking to the media outside the facility, he said 40 people had been discharged so far while five were in critical condition. “All efforts are being made to provide the best medical facilities to the injured,” he added.

Separately, the president and prime minister extended condolences to the grieving families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the wounded.

Road accidents with high fatalities are common in the country due to lax safety measures, poor driver training and decrepit transport infrastructure.

Passenger buses and trucks are frequently crammed to capacity and seatbelts are not commonly worn, meaning high death tolls from single-vehicle accidents are common.

According to the World Health Organisation estimates, more than 27,000 people were killed on Pakistan’s roads in 2018.

In January last year, 41 people were killed when their passenger bus, which was also loaded with containers of flammable oil, plunged into a ravine in Balochistan province and burst into flames.
