Worst Field Position in Gully Mohalla Cricket

Growing up playing cricket, I was reminiscing recently that the worst field position for a newcomer in the team is probably the 3rd Man spot, especially if you're playing tape tennis.

It's like the short leg field for Gully Mohalla games. However, unlike short leg you can't really pull off brilliance fielding at 3rd Man can you :danish It's basically a run saving field while if you muck up you get an earful from the Kaptaan :sarf

I hated fielding at 3rd Man while until I became an opening bowler Kaptaan would always ask me to field there (since I was the youngest on the team) :sanga Absolutely hated it !!

Would love to hear which field positions you guys hated during games played in your neighborhood/ club /area etc.
 
The one who stands closer to the drainage. If the ball falls in it, you know who has to pick it up.
 
Hated fielding outfield as the ball tends to slow down when it reaches you (and you have to run a lot). Extremely boring.

But at least it's a boundary saving field isn't it.... With 3rd Man you just wait and wait and if you're lucky the ball may come your way. Involvement is zilch throughout the innings !

This is where you need kids who are eager to play with bigger boys. We used to play a couple whose only real purpose was to fetch the ball from places we wouldn't want to.

It is, but its just too much work. Every few balls, a shot will cross the boundary, and then it is your job to chase the ball and find it. Impossible to enjoy this, I would rather sit idle at 3rd man. :inzi
 
Same here, 3rd man is the worst area. Nothing comes to you there, and in the first few months you have to really prove yourself to everyone that you are a good fielder to get inside the circle.

In gully cricket there isnt any bad field. There is action everywhere
 
In hard ball cricket even keeping isnt as fun as it is in gully cricket.

Really difficult field
 
I am an absolute gun fielder. Energetic, athletic and brave. Put me anywhere. I will save runs and take catches. Fielding is never boring for me. Although I do feel disrespected when put at third man.

I was such a good fielder and I always made this face :sanga when the captain dispatched me to the dreaded 3rd man position.

As my gully mohallah career progressed the captains realized that I was too good of a fielder to be wasted at 3rd man and they usually sent the fat kid over there.

Obviously when I became a senior I fielded wherever I felt like :hafeez2


One time when I had become a senior one of my rivals became the captain of my team and he sent me to the 3rd man position. The entire first innings I fielded a total of 2 deliveries and while getting bored there I was plotting and planning how I'll get back at the captain.


We both came out as openers and I was at the non-striking end. He smashed the bowl to a gap in the off-side but it was a quick single, I initially responded to the call but half way down I stopped, turned around and went back to my mark and he was left stranded in the middle of the pitch hehehe :afridi
 
Deepbackward point to long leg ,felt all of them inbetween as terrible.

WK and Cover,Mid Wicket were best,kept me "into" the game.

:)):)):))):)))and what happen after that .what were consequences of that
 
The long off position is the worst. Our desi boys don't know how to play an offside shot and I've spent whole innings without the ball coming to me.

The leg side isn't fun either, the desi boys play all their shots on the leg side and you'll get a proper cardio session fielding on the leg side. Matters only get worse if you are the youngest.
 
No votes for gully itself, this being about gully cricket? Or is the entire field a glorified gully position in this particular scenario?
 
The worst place to field from my memory is the place closest to the gate of the house where the ball is prone to go to. We always used to tell that guy to get the ball because he was near the Gate. Haha
 
Wicket keeping is a tough job in gully cricket. The bowlers would be bowling a lot of wides, many of them would be beyond your reach. Then you have to run all the way back to as far ball would go to collect it.

Usually there is little or no off side in gully cricket but in grounds, point to cover region is difficult to keep. Majority of the players are leg side hacks :anwara so the fielder at point would only get edges or slices to field for, most of them spin after first or second bounce. Catching too is not easy there.

No, that is galli, as in galli mohalla, galli koocha et al. Here they're talking about gully, which the dictionary tells me is "a water-worn ravine."
 
Close to Murree, you'll find Ghora Galli, i.e. Horse Lane. I imagine it's a tough galli to field in when the horses come galloping down it.

The Lawrence College boys could answer for sure.
 
We played in quite a tight galli but it was perfect because we had very low traffic. Another upside was that because I was the senior, I would hog the wicket keeping but I was damn good at it. I would be a chatter box like all of Pakistan's keepers but wasn't a butterfingers. :kakmal

I haven't had many bad experiences as a fielder. The worst one was when I was five and I was smacked in my butt by a club slogger. It was the only time I cried playing cricket but boy did that hurt.
