Would India have been able to compete with Australia if they had Smith, Warner, Bancroft, Pattinson?

that India is not current India. Current india has world class bowlers. good fielders. Good battinf potential too. young talents. More importantly india has never lost a test match when kohli won the toss.

India generally competes well in Australia regardless of the Australian lineup, so I don't think that would have been an issue.

If both teams were at full strength, I'm sure Australia would be firm favourites in a test series played in Australia right now. A series win for India wouldn't be out of the question though.

A fortified Australia is hard to beat at home.

They are now playing full strength against Pakistan and it shows.
 
We would have lost to Australia without Smith and Warner. We aren't good enough. We have lost to under strength teams before.
 
It's always important to be humble and honest.

India played against a joke of a batting line up.

Aaron Finch was hopeless and allowed us early break throughs almost always.

I don't even remember who all batsmen played in that series. Very forgettable.
 
Ifs and buts. The fact is India won a series there last time....end of discussion. Rest all is pure guess work.
 
India doesn't have pathetic tuktuk batsmen like Azhar, Shan, Haris, Iftikhar.. and bowler like Yasir and Imran. India would have drawn the test.
This test pitch is flat and any decent team would have drawn the test except us. Our batsmen are one of the worst among test teams similar to bangladesh and Zimbabwe.
 
Finch would have morphed into Warner against the rubbish Pakistan attack. An Australian side without Smith and Warner would thrash Pakistan 10/10 times at home.

There is no doubt Australia with those two would have threatened India more, but India under Kohli, the greatest Asian Test skipper of all time, is a different beast.

Besides, I think Bumrah is the biggest threat to Smith’s dominance in Test cricket. It will be fascinating to see their duel which unfortunately hasn’t happened yet.
 
^^^ Forgot of mention captain, head coach and bowling coach.
Under Azhar as captain, Misbah as head coach, Waqar as bowling coach if our squad consists of all time great batsmen and bowlers along with wicketkeeper/fielders/allrounders from all around the World that team will bound to fail as well.

Bumrah and Shami. That Shami's 2nd innings spell in Brisbane is perhaps the most hostile spell of fast bowling I have ever seen bowled by an Indian bowler.
 
I still think at best the series would have been a draw. Indian bowling was beastly there esp. Bumrah and Shami. But again these are all ifs and buts. And series are in the end decided not on ifs and buts. Result and performance matters in the end. There have been chances when India could have won earlier vs Aus in Aus but they were on wrong side of ifs and buts. This time tides turned. So well deserved

Also our players' mentality play a good part when we play against big team. Most of the players are not matured enough and have a attitude of 17 years old kids which also include our team captain, Misbah and Waqar. They don't have any mature plan or skill to overshadow team's weakness. Waqar after so many years of coach still don't have any idea to guide our bowlers.
 
Bumrah and Shami have been brutal with ball esp in 2nd innings Shami is deadlier than any other bowler in world cricket at the moment.

Kudos to him for grinding it out with so many personal issues :thumb
 
they were not winn8ng the 3rd and 4th test regardless whether smith or warner played. I think it would have been a draw or same score line.
 
Not only Bancroft and Pattinson, they were playing without ponting, Gilchrist, McGrath Brett Lee who wouldn't have conceded 500, 600 runs in a row and could have avoided follow-on twice! and probably would have won the series aswell!
 
You can only play whoever is in front of you, so its churlish to downplay Indian victory bcoz Smith & Warner got themselves banned - its like saying that NZ beat India in the semi final only bcoz Dhawan was not playing.

At the same time the two teams faced the same Aussie bowling attack & i believe the Indian attack would never have been 78-4 on such a roadroller of a pitch, after being 75-0 nor would Bumrah & Co. would have given Aussie batsmen room like Pakistan did in the first session yesterday; therein lies the difference. Warner had the worst possible English summer & we could have continued his woes if we had bowled better in the first hour, but no - we had to bring him back in form.

Not in a million years. They couldn't do it before, why would they now? I do think theyd be very competitive as the pitches are so flat.
 
Would have competed really well but not sure about winning as Warner and Smith are just too good at home and Australian batsmen other than these arent much of a threat. These two lead the innings and even guide others through with them.

In which case it would have been a drawn series as the Aussie bowling couldn’t get the Indian batting out either. Smith + Warner are not that better compared to Kohli + Pujara + Rahane on the present day Aussie pitches.
 
In any case, the debate will be settled soon enough as i think India tour Australia again next year.

Its not just the presence of Smith and Warner as batsmen which was obviously a big miss rather as senior players and part of the leadership group of the side too which makes a big difference in overall team morale and guidance to the players around them.

When India won in Australia, I did have my doubts and didn't rate that series win. In hindsight, India have proven themselves and earned respect.

Pakistan wouldn't lose to the Australian C team as shown by our match against Aus A.
Warner and Smith make all the difference and to an extent cummins and hazelwood

Lets see how India does in NZ in Jan. Hopefully would be a good competitive series to watch - always appreciate a good test match regardless who is playing it.

The last series score does not reveal the fact that the only difference between the two sides was an unknown entity called Sam Curran. It was a great series to watch even as a neutral.

You do realize that was a Pink ball match against the Aus A team? Wonder how the scores would have been if Pak would have batted 2nd in that match.

Nobody is using that as an excuse & England won it fair & square (unlike the WC), but one cant deny that matches in that series had gone right down to the wire.

Marnus Labuschagne scored a century lol. He couldn't do anything against India. Last time too Handscomb did who couldn't do anything against India either.

Labuschagne played only one test against India.
At that time he was just a rookie.
It's the Ashes and county cricket made him better.
 
Fans of a team that has lost 12 consecutive times in Australia are downplaying India's series win in the same country. The bitterness and delusion is amazing. Keep it up.

Handscomb scored runs against Pakistan in 2016 and couldn't do anything against India either. What's your argument then? He lost form and became worse?

Yes Indian Attack was better no doubt it,
But iam saying labuschagne played only one test and you are judging him based on one match.
 
Lol so labuschagne has been brought up in the conversation. This lad, although very promising, used to be one of australia's worst bats back in january. Infact, he was never going to even be selected for playing XI for ashes if not for that like-for-like concussion substitute where he showed that he has made lot of technical improvements to his game in last few months and deservingly became a regular in the test team.

Yup Ravi Jadeja's score of 81 was more than that of any Australian in the whole series! Just goes to show how much australians depend on Smith, Warner and Bancroft. Australia would have gotten whitewashed in ashes if not for smith! As Root said, Smith was the difference between the two sides.

Australia doesn't depend on smith against every team lol only good teams may be.

Forget Australian series, India is lucky that Sakib,Tamim, Fizz etc are missing in the on going series vs BD. Thank god for saving us from the humiliation.
 
The Indian batting was pummeling this exact same bowling lineup like a B grade county team.
 
Bancroft is that good that he couldn't even get into the playing eleven against Pakistan!

lol I remember the proper phainta they received in the 3rd and the fourth was about to embarrassing. rain god saved their butts. Make no mistake smith or not they weren't beating india in the 3rd and 4th tests.

1st test is questionable as they came close. However india generally does well when they have to defend a total greater than 250. Plus kohli doesn't lose when india wins the toss. Makes me think india would have still won.

The players who looked like school boys against India are looking world beaters here. Amazing turnaround thanks to Ashes that transformed a bunch of zeroes to heroes. :14:

Certainly would have done better than this Pakistan team, but Australia would've still be dominant.

And England was without its best bowler Anderson, so that makes Smith’s record worthless isn’t it (By PP logic)? We would never know how Smith would have played if Anderson, Broad & Archer were bowling in tandem.

we won in mcg and adelaide and pakistan has been losing there for years and will do so again next match.

and we didnt have bumrah and bhuvi in england (bumrah for first two). unavailability is only brought in to demean india's achievements. because they have no achievements of their own to celebrate they try demeaning others'.

England beat India when Indians were missing their best players and lost the toss every single time. There are so many maybes and asterisks in Cricket these days.

India would have won the series in England quite comfortably if their best bowlers were playing, and they didn't lose every single toss. Let's not forget that Engalnd needed a freak performance from the like of Currans to win a couple of games despite all the advantage.

What happened when Bumrah was there in rest 3 matches?
India still had a chance to win the series.
It was the batting that we lost.
