As the drums of war beat louder around Iran, one cannot help but wonder if the so-called Muslim ummah will continue to remain mere silent spectators or will they do something for real to defend Iran.
Pakistan for instance never misses a chance to sermonize on Muslim solidarity but in practice has offered nothing more than supportive tweets all while their head of state enjoys his evenings in US. It preaches pan-Islamism while remaining permanently leased to the geopolitical dictates of China, Saudi Arabia, and the United States, each with divergent stances on Iran. One wonders if Islamabad would even flinch if Tehran burned, so long as its sugar daddy in Riyadh was pleased.
Then there’s Turkey, forever fantasizing about a neo-Ottoman revival. President Erdogan often brands himself the leader of the Muslim world and yet Ankara is more interested in real estate in northern Syria, posturing in the Mediterranean or brokering arms deals with NATO. When it comes to Iran, Turkey’s policies remain transactional at best. A loud voice on Palestine, but conveniently mute when Shia blood risks being spilled.
And of course, there’s the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, a bloc of over 50 Muslim-majority nations that can pass resolutions by the dozen but couldn’t pass a glass of water to Iran in a time of actual crisis. The OIC has mastered the art of impotent outrage. It excels at issuing strongly-worded statements after the damage is done. When Iraq was invaded, they blinked. When Libya was shattered, they split. If Iran is attacked, expect them to urgently meet in a luxury 7 star hotel to agree on the font size of their next meaningless media brief.
The irony is staggering. Iran, despite its sectarian differences with much of the Sunni world, has stood at the frontline of resistance against Western and Israeli domination whether I agree with them on this or not but I will give them that they took on a mission impossible with little support from the other so called Muslim nations. It has supported causes the rest of the Muslim world only tweets about. If such a nation is destroyed while the “ummah” watches silently or worse, celebrates then the idea of Muslim unity will be exposed for what we always knew it was, a hollow myth peddled by hypocritical regimes and delusional manchilds on the internet that are quick to invoke Islam when convenient but cower when courage is required.
They will never stand for something real but will just keep sitting, watching, and issuing statements from a safe distance as history burns another Muslim nation to the ground.
