This is the argument that RR made a few days ago in a press conference that a T-20 League's success is determined by the quality of the local players. Foreign players only add a little bit of Tarka too the league but thats about it. Even in the IPL the local Indian players are usually paid way more than Foreign players. Even the Big Bash and Natwest T-20 Leagues don't allow more than 12 overseas players in total.

If lets say if the IPL is held for one season without any international players at all. Will it still be very succesfull, entertaining and watched by all?

No foreign players in the IPL = no money to other boards for letting their players play in IPL.

Foreign players not playing in IPL + Boards not receiving compensation from IPL = scheduling series’ during IPL window.

International games being played during IPL = no one apart from Indians watching IPL.

So, the answer is no.

Yes it would. The local talent of Indian cricket far exceeds any talent we have seen before. They are all international quality. So either with foreign players or without IPL would be the biggest brand of cricket today.

No one apart from Indians watch IPL now. The IPL audience currently comprises of fans from India, expats in USA, UK, and other countries. Sure there are a few here and there that may watch. But on the whole, no one other than Indian fans care about IPL.

So the current success is entirely by locals and expats. So I don't think they will stop watching if things change. I would say there will be a dip in viewership in the short run. But will go back up as the years go on. Similar to NFL, MLB, NBA where there is only local talent.

Not just about fans, it’s the exposure the league gets when they play the biggest overseas players.

Before Sky Sports (UK) signed a deal with the IPL broadcasters, they’d only report on the IPL whenever an English player was playing. And, that’s probably the same in other countries too.

IPL without foreigners would be like the EPL without foreigners, a failure. Then again they both have a product that attracts foreigners in the first place.

It wouldn't be a failure. A state league like TNPL is doing alright for 5 years now.

Who are these foreign players anyway?

IPL is basically a collection of Indians + select West Indian and Australian players mainly. Everybody else can take a hike.

If it weren't for relations, it would have been Pakistanis all over, with specialized agents working for IPL with touch of WI, AUS, NZ and tid bits of ENG

It seemed like that in season 1 and 2

But hey, if it weren't for relations then PSL would have never come into existence

Same goes for IPL, if it werent for ISL and Misbah's mis hit

Why will that situation arise ever though?
But to answer your question depends on the star power of the Indian players.
Many people go to stadium just to catch a glimpse of a Dhoni or a Kohli or Rohit.
So if all top Indian internationals are there in each team there is enough power to pull the crowds.
Can it be sustained year on year, I don’t think so.

Local leagues like Karnataka and TNPL pull decent crowds as well.
If no foreign players are there, just need Bollywood celebrities and top actresses to turn up at the stadium for every match and you will see crowd go wild.
So in the worse case it can be sustained for a couple of years.

There has to be a balance.

Good overseas players help with marketing, attention and interest around the world and help develop local youngsters.

But any tournament has to be careful that it doesn't become too focussed on overseas players.

The PSL is a concern with too many average overseas players being recruited ahead of local deserving players.

Indians only will provide more revenue to the IPL than any international series scheduled anywhere.

Supersports offered more money for IPL rights then the now defunct GT20 of SA. Bein sports, Sky, FB, all were bidding for the IPL rights. All telecast in India or for expats only?

How many of you can name the all the teams in the syed mushtaq Ali Cup , that should be your answer, without foreigners ipl just becomes another domestic t20 league

Without foreign players there won't be much difference between IPL and Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy.

You are wrong here

Buttler, Stokes, Roy, Morgan, Archer, Jordan, Curran etc all play in the IPL

Same goes for top class South African players - Rabada, Dekock, Nortje, Miller etc.

Basically 90% of top international stars play in IPL.

False comparison. Top Indian players never feature in the SMAT.

That is the power of the IPL. I have a feeling the upcoming auction and the following broadcasting rights bidding will turn things in a very big way. It will likely push IPL ahead of international matches (if it already isn't) for BCCI/India.

All we have to do is wait for auction time to see who the foreign are. I am sure about 1500-2000 non Indian players are going to put their hands up. Will be clamoring to show their skills.

Answer is no.

It probably wouldn't have been successful without foreign star players.

No. IPL without top world class overseas players won't have the same appeal. It will be fun and interesting but no, people take it seriously now because the quality of players it presents and 1 country cannot make up the numbers for 10 teams. So yes top international players are a must for IPL to sustain and grow it's popularity.

There is a T20 tournament that already happens in India without international players . It is called Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

This is modeled after EPL. So obviously they are the key components. Originally a rebel league ICL was started. Then IPL came into realization. Even they had foreign players with limited resources. So there is no question "What if" here. Why would they start a premiere league only with Indian players?

It would still be huge in India even without foreign players but the quality of cricket won’t be the same & will eventually loose audience as it would probably be dominated by 1 or 2 big teams with all the best Indian players, I can guarantee 300 + scores with the quality of the local bowlers barring a half a dozen or so international level bowlers

No. Quality can be infinitely better. But the interests will dwindle. It is fascinating to see fans idolize foreign players. Rashid khan has such a huge fan following in Andhra. Same way ABDV is adored in Bangalore. People love to see personalities like Imran Tahir, Maxwell. It is much more than about the actual quality of the game. Syed Mustaq ali is the official T20 tournament of India. Not the IPL. Infact Pandya came into IPL side through that tournament. IPL is a money spinner. It makes the lives of so many cricketers better. Only downside is absolutely garbage player get sold for millions.

Absolutely wrong.

SMA doesn't have most of the Indian stars and has 30 teams.

If all Indian stars play in a tournament, divided in 8 teams, it will have more viewership in India then any other International series or anything else.

'Cut salaries and BCCI must penalise...': Gavaskar wants severe step against players leaving IPL early for national duty

Soon after England announced their squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup late last month, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) clarified that the cricketers picked for the ICC tournament have to return home from their ongoing IPL duties for the home contest against Pakistan, which begins from May 22 onwards. England’s team managing director, Rob Key, added that captain Jos Buttler wanted England players to withdraw from IPL 2024 ahead of the playoffs. However, the decision left former India captain Sunil Gavaskar livid as he called for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take severe action against foreign players leaving the tournament for their national duties.

Even though the BCCI were quick to initiate a conversation with the ECB to come to a conclusion in favour of the IPL franchises who will suffer a big loss post May 17, there have been no official update on the change of plans for England players.

With less than a week left before the players depart for the home series in preparation for the T20 World Cup, which begins from June 1 onwards, Gavaskar, in his column for Mid Day, urged both the respective IPL franchises and the BCCI to take a strong step against such acts. He wants IPL teams to cut the salaries of the players, who have been paid in full for being available for the entire duration of the season, and wants BCCI to penalise their cricket boards, who get 10 per cent commission making their players available for the IPL, to which the cricketers belong.

"I am all for players choosing country before anything else but having assured various franchises about their availability for the full season, if they pull out now, it will be letting down the franchises which probably pay them more money in one IPL season which they don’t earn in a few seasons with their country. The franchises should not only be allowed to deduct a substantial amount from the fee that the player was bought for, but also not give the Board, to which the player belongs, the stated 10 per cent commission of the fee that each player gets.

If the Board has gone back on its assurance they need to be penalised too. By the way, this 10 per cent commission to the Boards happens only in the IPL and nowhere else. Not in the Australian Big Bash nor in the ECB’s The Hundred, nor in the Caribbean Premier League, nor any other T20 league anywhere else in the world. Does the BCCI get any thanks for its generosity? No way," he said.

Gavaskar is a big cheer leader always shaking BCCI pom poms to keep himself in the good books and secure his own future.

But he has a point here.

If it wasn't pre arranged the franchise should be able to claw back some of the salary money.

Lol hahaha this oldie buzurg again cheering for BCCI. All these former Indian players are such cheerleaders of BCCI. They are pathetic.

Classic attack the man approach instead of explaining what did Gavaskar say which was wrong.

Players are free to choose their country over the club. But the player and their board shouldn’t be allowed to go back on their contractual terms without penalty.

Gavaskar is a shameless BCCI simp. Always frames any issue as 'us indians vs them goras'. A sad man.

Successful is subjective, even local regional T20 leagues are successful within their own rights.

IPL will be successful without international stars as Indian domestic market is huge, however, it will lose its charm and won’t be nearly as big as it is today.

You need all the international stars in IPL to make it the biggest show in cricket.

Did you see how much the IPL media rights sold for? You think that’s a decline?

Historically, some of Australian players have opted out of IPL for national duty, there’s nothing new in thatc

English players actually fought with their board to allow them to play in IPL.

IPL will continue to grow till Indian middle/upper middle class grow their purchasing power.
If Indian economy stagnates then the growth of IPL will also become slower.

If you understand basic economy you would understand what factors IPL growth is based on.

Really? All evidence seems to indicate otherwise. From what I see, IPL continues to be a roaring success. I do not know the numbers for the current season, but if past seasons are any indication, there is likely a substantial growth. Not decline.

Easy way to find out is to follow the money. It pretty much always gives a very clear picture. Don't need to dig too deep. Just looking at the broadcast rights is enough. The largest broadcast deal in the history of cricket. More than Indian international matches. More than even ICC tournaments. By the way, that is just north of $6 Billion. Billion with a B!

If this is decline, I shudder to think what state international cricket is in. Let alone the state of boards like SL, WI, SA, etc.

As many international stars pulled out of IPL 2024 in the middle of the tournament, do you expect a rise in media rights in the coming years?

IPL teams' revenue dropped 'sharply' in FY23, could be reaching saturation

The average revenue of all Indian Premier League (IPL) teams in Financial Year 2022-23 (FY23) was 23 per cent lower than the pre-Covid-19 year of FY19, said a report on Thursday, suggesting the popular T20 cricket tournament is “reaching a saturation point".

"If we account for inflation, the drop in revenues becomes much sharper," said market intelligence platform PrivateCircle. An inflation rate of 10 per cent over the last four years would mean that the average drop in earnings for all teams was close to 47 per cent in FY23 compared to FY19.

"This sharp decline in revenues could indicate that the market for the IPL is reaching a saturation point," said the report, which studied the market filings of companies that own the teams. "It could be due to various factors such as over-saturation of cricket content, changing consumer preferences, or competing entertainment options."

PrivateCircle said that if revenues decline or stagnate, it may create the need for IPL to make a structural change. This could include measures like revenue-sharing arrangements, cost control, or strategic partnerships, to ensure the league’s long-term viability.

The data in the report showed that in FY19 Kolkata Knight Riders had the highest revenue at Rs 437 crore, followed by Delhi Capitals at Rs 424 crore and Chennai Super Kings at Rs 418 crore.

In FY23, Delhi Capitals had the highest revenue at Rs 367 crore. Gujarat Titans took the second spot at Rs 360 crore and was followed by Mumbai Indians (Rs 359 crore). Their figures are lower compared to the top three revenue-generating teams in FY19.

The average revenue of all teams was Rs 394.28 crore in FY19 and fell to Rs 307.5 crore in FY23. However, the report added that income from sponsorships has increased for all teams.

Among the teams who reported such numbers, Royal Challengers Bangalore topped with a sponsorship income of approximately Rs 83 crore in FY23. It was followed by Chennai Super Kings at Rs 78 crore and Delhi Capitals at Rs 72 crore.

Gavaskar is saying the right thing. The foreign players who are leaving, but taking the full salary has basically made BCCI and their franchises an ullu.

I am surprised that the contract does not have clause for compensation based on availability.

I am sure it is incoming if it already isn't. More stringent rules of what a player can and cannot do in terms of availability and commitment to the franchise.

Different people see it differently. I see the IPL continue to be successful. Continue to occupy 25% of the cricket calendar. Probably even increasing it a bit as it adds teams in the coming years.

This law is highly required because the money pocketed by the players is huge.

It mentions reason for the stagnation and no where it’s because of players pulling out.

In India every success story reaches its peak in first few seasons example big boss, roadies, KBC etc.

Then the public loses interest of the repetitive content and ratings drop a bit, to get another higher peak sometimes it takes time.

In such cases it depends on various factors.

End of the day IPL will continue to be a money maker till Indian economy/middle/upper middle class is doing well. Whether it makes 10 crore or 100 crore or 10000 crore it will depend on other factors but for the foreseeable future it will continue to be money making.

Cricket is an international game and not a league based sport like Football or American sports nor a tournaments based sport like olympic sports.

It will take time to streamline all the issues in running leagues like IPL in a sport like cricket.

NBA was nearly bankrupt in 80s and now it’s one of the biggest sports league in the world.

Luckily, IPL don’t face monetary problems, it’s problem are more of administrative Which can only be sorted with time.

Lol jos Butler has already left and others will too as well. BCCI can't do zilch about that. They couldn't stop them. It's good to see these players preferring national duty for a change.
New Zealand players are shameless though.

All IPL players are paid the percentage they are available excluding the injuries during the season. A 2 mil contract guy being available for 7 games is paid 1 mil.

Right now the players get the best of both worlds. IPL money and they can be pulled out by their board without repercussions.

The real challenge for both boards and 'patriotic' players will come when @U$ofA says stringent rules are implemented.

In that scenario I wouldn't be too confident of the players preferring national duty.

One could argue that rather than blaming the IPL fingers should be pointed at England for scheduling international commitments during the window when they know fine we'll their players benefit from it.

I dont think that will cause any issue for them as they have already many international players playing in IPL but yeah it will surely hurt any specific franchise who will miss most of the International players.

I don't think ECB is enforcing them here. If the same series were held in Pakistan i don't think they would be playing. Going home is always a good feeling with full pay.

NZ players are not shameless. They earn peanuts through their national team contracts compared to Australians and Englishmen. Same goes for South Africans. They don't earn anything close to what the Poms and the Kangaroos earn.

It's perfectly reasonable for NZ players to play the IPL and ignore a meaningless T20 series against Pakistan. Would you give up your IPL earnings if the alternative was to go play against Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe? For the NZ players, it was the same situation. Pakistan is a minnow team. No point in sacrificing hundreds of thousands of dollars just to earn probably $5k in a meaningless T20 series.

How Pakistan is a minnow team to SA and NZ when they loose almost every time when they play against Pakistan in an icc tournament.

Having a foreign player in a league is good for your marketing otherwise there is no real threat to any league in the world. Foreign players bring a different approach, different game, and a changed environment in the dugout and make a league it more competitive otherwise it is not like, a league cannot work without playing foreign players.

IPL might get hit in revenues for sure if it happens but it is not like it will just shut off.

The logical answer would be no, it would not be as successful..

IPL is a very success product the way it is, if BCCI banned foreigners the audience would notice and complain and that could have an impact on tv ratings, especially considering the impact foreigners have made on the different ipl teams ie. Bravo (CSK), De Villiers (RCB), Malinga (MI) etc..T20 is an entertainment format, so the more variety the better. When you have something and it is taken away without a better alternative, people will notice and ultimately the product suffers.

Imagine if BCCI lifted the ban on Pakistan players and Babar Azam got picked for RCB ? Whether you like it or not the ratings would go through the roof to watch Kohli and Babar Azam bat for the first time. That is the power of introducing something different.

Yep. that could be groundbreaking stuff. Revenues will be skyrocketed if it happens.

Exactly. The real "challenge" will be if/when IPL tells the players to pick one. IPL contract or national duty. They can only have one. That will separate oil from water so to speak!

That is coming. As IPL expands and grows, the contracts get bigger, the franchises and the league would want more commitment from all involved. Players, coaches, other back room staff, umpires, match referees, broadcasters heck, even the ICC.

Gavaskar is a shameless BCCI simp. Always frames any issue as 'us indians vs them goras'. A sad man.

Yes, you would have us massaging the gora egos.

Gavaskar and a few Indian commies are the only ones who can say the truth on the face of Aussies and English. Rest just fall in line.

Pakistanis have been wishing the decline of IPL since 2010. Hasn't happened. Won't happen.

Players get paid on pro rata basis.

All boards inform the BCCI about player availability well in advance. Sometimes a board extends it, sometimes they don't.

Lol. Why will revenues sky rocket? If Pakistan has such huge potential to pay why is PSL not having huge revenues?
Because we dont have indian players here. Same is the reason for the revenue thing I said is for IPL. Indo Pak players are always a thing to watch when it comes to cricket. People will pay money to watch them play together, be it PSL or IPL.

IPL is among worlds top 3 leagues in terms of broadcast revenues.

Indians pay to watch Indian players.

You are highly mistaken if you think Pakistanis will bring something extra that an Australia won't.

Its amazing that 16 years of IPL success hasn't taught you that pakistani players and pakistani audience is immaterial for IPLs commercial success.

Money is in India. See how SA20 and ILT20 can give out much higher salaries.

India has money and can give high salaries as well. I am talking about crowd-pulling stuff and the hype Kohli-babar playing together will get or shaheen bowling in front of a houseful Chepauk crowd.

Lol jos Butler has already left and others will too as well. BCCI can't do zilch about that. They couldn't stop them. It's good to see these players preferring national duty for a change.
New Zealand players are shameless though.
I think it was only done because almost all of England's main WT20 squad players were in IPL. So if they wanted to gel in together and form a proper XI before the WT20 begins. They only have this Pakistan T20 Series.

I don't see them leaving IPL in the future if there was no ICC event that was coming or if majority of English players are not in IPL.

Sir no one who hasn't watched IPL in last 16 years is going to watch IPL tommorow because of Babar or Shaheen.

IPL is extremely popular in India, across age groups. Pakistanis won't make a difference.

If Imran or Wasim or Waqar quality players were going to come, it would make difference in team quality not commercial success.

Pakistanis have been wishing the decline of IPL since 2010. Hasn't happened. Won't happen.
In 2009 or was it 2010 PCB tried to sabotage IPL by not issuing NoC citing "security reasons". Those security reasons were Mumbai attack's.
The misconception that PCB had, f IPL was solely a success due to Pakistani player participation. Similar things were said that time that eventually IPL will fail and BCCI would come down to knees in front of BCCI. Nothing of that sort happened as witnessed in last 15 odd years , infact the exact reverse.

A few Pakistani fans are still under delusion that IPL value will go up ( that is if it can go up any further) if Pakistani players play IPL. But if that was a fact, then shouldn't PSL have been minting money and drawing huge crowds into the stadium by the same logic?? That did not seem to happen in recently concluded PSL.

However foreign players will always add a little bit of star factor, but they need to be good quality players be it from Aus, WI, Nepal or Ireland or anywhere. Its a win win type situation for players as well as IPL.

Naerine for example has refused to come out of retirement for WI, despite appeals by the current WI captain. And obviously why would he? He will make 10 times more in 1 IPL season and get to still play with same set of international players who will compete in T20 World cup.

Yes, you would have us massaging the gora egos.

Gavaskar and a few Indian commies are the only ones who can say the truth on the face of Aussies and English. Rest just fall in line.

Gavaskar never criticises the BCCI when they need to be, he only focuses on easy targets like Aus and Eng that he knows will get insecure indian nationalists raging at some non-existent injustice lol.

I am not surprised at your post though.

You have little to no idea about how cricket was run in the past and how things changed.

Aus and Eng are easy targets. Why not ask a few other asian commies to criticize them.

Just a week back, Gavaskar heavily criticized Kohli.

I have seen with my own eyes how BCCI has changed cricket in India in last 20 years.

That was then, this is now. Times have changed.

You still live in that era. Sunny still pretends to live in that era because it brings him handsome financial rewards.

Currently Pakistan doesn’t have any player who will make much of a difference to IPL ratings.

However, had there been Wasim, Waqar, Shoaib, Inzi type players then it would have increased the ratings a bit.

I’ll tell you how, if a team is not performing good or don’t have a star name some fans don’t watch their matches. You will see more interest in matches of CSK, MI, RCB, KKR compared to let’s say Delhi or Punjab. If DC or Punjab had Wasim, Shoaib etc then sone fans will tune in just to watch such players. It will increase ratings for such teams, not by much but still a little increase. Also, would bring in Pakistani viewership.

But current crop of Pakistani players have 0 pull.

IPL is a big league. Probably has more viewership than BBL I believe. Foreign players are necessary for leagues because, without them, nobody will take it seriously and will be taken as another domestic tournament. Foreign players increase the worth and hype for a league so yeah, it is not just IPL, PSL, CPL and almost every other league cannot to that successful without involvement of foreign players.

It's probably the first time that IPL team PBKS is playing with only one foreign player, which is Rilee Rossouw

Haha they can't win even with 11 foreign players so that's why they cut their budget and went with only one foreign player to save some money :ROFLMAO:
