I would put Dwight Shrute in there in place of Ron Swanson.

Was a 50/50 call between Shrute and Funke but went for Funke in the end. Swanson stays on the list.

Funke was awesome. One of the more underrated characters of the show which in itself is pretty underrated.

Don't think it's that under rated as it usually makes most lists of the top 5 comedies. However it has more of a cult following as it wasn't as widely watched like Friends etc which were mostly just laugh tracks and people had to actually think about a joke which made it even funnier. It is also the most quotable and re watchable shows as every now and then after multiple viewings I find a joke I had missed before.

Yeah I meant as in not as popular as Friends and HIMYM which were good at best and doesn't deserve the amount of adulation they generally seem to get.

Another such show is Community. Not massively popular but gem of a work.

And Parks and Recreations.

And Vampire diaries. My girlfriend loves it and I swear to God it's the funniest show I have seen in a while. Can't stop laughing every time that joker Damon is on the screen.

Tyrion Lannister
Tony Soprano
Walter White
Saul Goodman
Don Draper
Frank Underwood
Sherlock Holmes (from the british Sherlock series)
Will Smith (Fresh Prince)
Jax Teller (First two seasons of SOA were good, after that not so much)
Ragnar Lothbrook (Vikings is amazing)

Hard to name just 3.

Walter White
Jesse Pinkman
Lionel Hutz attorney at law

Special mention for Snoop from The Wire, one of the most original characters I've ever seen in a tv show.

My favorite cartoon character is Aamer Liaqat Hussain. I don’t even need to list three. This one should suffice.

Excellent choice. Dr Hartman from Family Guy is another one that would surely be in my top 5 characters in TV animation.

But a caricature implies another, original, character that ALH is imitating in an exaggerated manner. I’m not sure if that is true.

True. He is a caricature of many of the so called TV Aalims or televangelists although most of them would give him a run for his money too. Think that recent video of him walking off the set and then coming back the next day and hugging everybody like they were reunited lost brothers from the Kumbh mela illustrates my point.

Fair enough. I haven’t actually watched his recent... performances.

What’s a khumb mela? Some sort of festive demonstration of street lamps?

I think Saul Goodman was probably inspired by Lionel Hutz, the trailblazer for ambulance chasing lawyers. Actually Breaking Bad probably has most of my favourite tv characters, I found them all absolutely enthralling. Another honourable mention to a cartoon character has to go to Bender from Futurama. I didn't even watch the show regularly but was worth sitting through for his parts alone.

I don't know man I personally found BB characters a tad too OTT. The whole premise of the show revolves around Walter White, the character who's too unrealistic to be taken seriously even with the fake machoism. Tony Soprano could kill the guy with his bare hands without even so much as flinching .

I'm surprised nobdoy here mentioned Jessie Pinkman, perhaps the only believable and genuinely interesting guy on the show.

Captain Furillo from Hill St Blues
Walter White
Rick Sanchez

gonna mention Jamie Lannister. I know his story dropped off a bit between season 5 - 6, but none the less I think is a triumph of a character.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau doesn't get the credit he deserves. I have never seen a character transformation go so well. He was the first villian of the show, has done unspeakable things, but now most people root for him.

I mentioned Jesse in my original list. I was talking more about the peripheral figures in BB, like Badger and Skinny Pete who I thought were brilliant. Loved more or less the whole cast to be honest.

Homer Simpson
Hannibal Lecter
Nathaniel Fisher Senior

Oh yeah those two haha yes you could make a case for them. Man I gotta rewatch BB. Been a long time.

Hannibal Lecter

I'm a huge six feet under fan and it's sad to see that it gets so little attention in comparison to other HBO classics despite it being one of the finest dramas to come out in the 21st century.

Michael C Hall is widely praised for his role in Dexter but imo his performance as David Fisher was as good if not better.
Hugely underrated performance.

Surprised you didn't mention Charles Dance.

Surprised you didn't mention Charles Dance.

He was the best actor the show has had, and a player proper villain in that he wasn’t a caricature. However Jamie’s transformation from the worst person ever to loveable anti hero is what puts him ahead as a character.

Purely on acting though Charles Dance is much better than Nikolaj

Too difficult to pick 3.

Jesse Pinkman
Walter White
Saul Goodman
Gus Fring
Vic Mackey
Tony Soprano
Pablo Escobar
Omar Little
Jaime Lannister
Tyrion Lannister

There’s more but these come to mind first for me

Jaime is the best character on the show along with his brother. That’s also partly because Nikolajs acting improved a lot after season 1 somewhere in the middle of season 2. Re watch it and focus on his performance and you’ll see

Sad no Leslie Knope she was amazing only below Ron Swanson but felt above Michael.
Gina from Brooklyn nine nine was another amazing one.
I think there has been no mention of many female characters here mostly because in their own shows they get shadowed but some better male character.

Is SNL counted as a TV show?
So many from there would.make.my list among latest one being Kate McKinnon who has done awesome job.

Amy Poehler is great in her own right in that show but not top 3 of all time for me, definitely top 10. Although I think Julia Louis-Dreyfus's character of Selina Meyer in Veep is even better. A lot of great characters in that show too. Had almost forgotten about it.

Amy poehler is defn my fav although Julia is defn the best which I acknowledge.

Also Julia would be hard to beat for any female in comedy TV shows she is the biggest there is and been so good for so long, even a silly series like Adventures of Christine she was good.

On a side note there is a movie feat James Gandolfini and Julia ,I really like the passive comedy of that movie 'Enough Said' perfect DVD viewing.

An underrated movie with an excellent script and even better acting. I really did come to despise Julia's character many times in the movie and Gandolfini in his last movie even managed to make me forget that the same guy played Tony Soprano, a fitting final tribute to his talent.
