Yuvraj Singh retires from international cricket & IPL : How highly do you rate him?

Bishen Singh Bedi - A larger than life legend.

Before YouTube, I grew up listening to stories of his by my father. He used to tell me how Bishen Singh Bedi would bowl overs after overs of classic spin bowling and wouldn’t give an inch away. That how this man would stand up in the middle of the wicket and applaud if an opposition batter would hit him for a boundary. What an icon of the game.

One of the greatest ever spinners.

Robin Uthappa has indirectly blamed Virat Kohli's captaincy for ending Yuvraj Singh's international cricket career during an interview with the local media:

"Take Yuvi Pa's instance. The man beat cancer and was trying to make a comeback into the international side. He is the man who won us a World Cup-won us two World Cups, for that matter-along with the other players but played an integral role in helping us win. Then for such a player, when you become captain, you say his lung capacity has diminished and you have been with him when you have seen him struggle. Nobody has told me this, I observe things."

"You have seen him struggle, then when you are captain, yes you have to maintain a level of standard, but there are always exceptions to the rule. Here is a man who deserves to be an exception because he is not just beaten and won you tournaments, but he has beaten cancer. He has beaten the hardest challenge in life in that sense. Some question room for someone like that."

"So when Yuvi requested for that two-point deduction, he didn't get it. Then he did the test because he was outside the team and they weren't taking him in. He passed the fitness test, came inside the team, had a lean tournament, took him out totally. Never entertained him after that. Whoever was in the leadership group, didn't entertain him. That time Virat was the leader and it went according to him due to his strong personality, and that time it was according to him."

Yuvraj Singh, during a media interaction at a local event:

"Domestic cricket is important. I have always felt if you have time and if you are not performing, you should definitely come and play domestic cricket."

"That is the best way to get practice and game time. I feel domestic cricket is very important if you have the time and if you are not injured."

"I always look at the team graph over a five-year period or three years. If you talk about Rohit, Gautam has just come into the system, he needs more time. Rohit Sharma has won the T20 World Cup as captain, he was captain when India played the ODI World Cup final. He led MI (Mumbai Indians) to five IPL titles."

"The guy has stepped down from the last match and given somebody else a chance. How many captains have done that in the past? Please tell me."

"Nitish scored a hundred on his first tour, it is amazing. Not sure how many have done that. Jaiswal scored 150 plus in his first Test in Australia, it is highly commendable. We should talk about these performances more."
