1st Test between England (275 & 170/3) and New Zealand (378 & 169/6) ends in a draw

Ollie Robinson picks up his 2nd wicket and it's the big wicket of Ross Taylor early in his innings. Excellent debut thus far for Robinson, brilliant bowling.

End to a tortured Taylor innings. I really hope we get a couple more good knocks from him before he calls it a day.

Robinson's been good at getting the ball back into the RHBs in county cricket. Taylor's looked vulnerable to LBW.

NZL have wobbled since the break. Need their batting depth to come through.

Appalling over rate. Hopefully Root cops a ban for this, esp against India.

Going in with 4 quicks, out of which two can only bowl short spells, is risky on a dry flattie with warm sunny weather forecast. Someone like Root will only come in to bowl to push the overrate or as a defensive option generally. Will be targeted by the batsmen.

ENG may still go on to win but man with all that brain power at work, they have made a rookie move in choosing their bowling attack.

It's worth the risk, Root and Lawrence can do a tidy enough job with their spin. Otherwise we'd have to go in 3 very similar right arm swing bowlers.

Space Cat, what will be New Zealand's starting XI in the WTC final..

Who will Boult replace in the current XI?

J can see Taylor leaving Tests in 1 year but I think he'll hang around in ODI until hrs 40-41 years old.

If NZ aren't sentimental fools and beholden to seniority like India, they'll dump Ross T for WTC final.

There is no point playing Anderson and Broad together. It should be Anderson, Robinson, Wood and Leech/Moeen. Poor team selection.

Going in with 3 pace bowlers: one being someone with recurring injury issues, another being a 38 year old who has had injury issues lately and a debutant, wouldn't be a good move.

Let's see how it unfolds. If NZ aren't down by more than 4 when the final 90 minutes of the day rolls in, they can have a feast. The ''tidy'' spin options are not going to keep the pressure on.

Mark wood has bowled some good deliveries
But he is still lacking control

Olly stone would have been a better choice, or even Overton

Also worth noting that captains no longer get suspended for poor over rates.

With new bat Nicholls in and NZ in some sort of wobble, ENG choose to up their over rate instead of piling on the pressure.

Wood is just not an English conditions bowler. Overton should have played ahead of him.

And that's why you need a spinner who can bowl enough to keep the three pacers fresh. Anderson, Robinson and Wood in first test followed by Broad, Stone and one of Anderson/Robinson( depending on Robinson's performance) in second test.

Some examination for Nicholls, the new batsman. Part time spin of Root from one end.

Vital tea session.
If nz only lose one or two wickets, they are on their way of scoring 300 or above.
This will put them ahead by alot

Looks like tidy spin option only helped Nicholls bed himself in.

The last visiting batsman to hit a ton on Test debut at Lord's -- Sourav Ganguly in June 1996. Can Devon Conway score a ton on Test debut at Lord's? Looks solid. Only 5 batsmen have hit a century on Test debut at Lord's!

Done.
100 for Conway.

50 scored in the last 10 overs as Root brings himself on with his tidy offies. :)))

Such a boring contest no excitement at all .i was thinking of a cracking series

Anderson is dead and buried. Only good for one game per series or two if its Ashes or India series. Should not be taken to Ashes. Already wasted the career of Porter, can't afford to waste Robinson.

ENG have blown this one at the strategic level choosing no spinner. Last hour of the day, NZ bossing it, and Root has the overrate on his mind. Shambolic.

Root must also be dreading that he has to wheel this attack out in the 2nd dig :)))

Last year, Jamieson made a huge difference to the nz bowling attack.
Conway may have made a similar impact on the batting.

I see Conway being new Zealand's Mike hussey.

Now nz are a much better team with these two players

I do not recall who the poster was saying Anderson was so good on the recent India tour. I could only smile reading that because his numbers were pretty only on paper. He had minimal impact on the ground.

I'd love for ENG to take him to AUS.

Only if you're an Aussie.

If Root doesn't bowl himself or another tidy spinner, ENG might find themselves short by 5 overs even after extra 30 minutes of play.

Conway has played a very impressive knock on debut at Lord's. Reason enough to call it an exciting and very watchable day of test cricket. Batting in tests is quite an art and I dont think people brought up on a diet of 20-20 can really appreciate it

This is a road.

Wait till he plays India in a few weeks when I'm sure he will have much more helpful pitches to deal with.

Conway is a great addition to NZ XI. Very impressive.

On contrary, Ashwin has a great chance as he will get to bowl to a number of left handers in NZ team in the WTC.

NZ have always struggled for a decent test opening pair, so conway doing well on debut may help NZ alot in the longterm as latham as his partner is pretty decent aswell. kiwis will want to get 450 here atleast on a sluggish surface. conway with bat was impressive today.

Early days yet in the Test but already it looks like England's policy of not going in with a spinner could backfire.

Who will Boult replace in the current XI?

Id say boult will replace ether CDG or Santner depending on the surface. Personally i think CDG would be more effective against Indian batsman regardless of pitch and is a better bat.

Wonder if NZ would take the punt of going without a spinner in their XI though. Particularly in Southampton and if the current weather in England holds up.

I dont know if we are bold enough in our selections to do it. I truely feel CDGs medium pace will be far more trouble for India than Santner could ever be.

I dont know if its been mentioned much but this is the first time Conway has opened in red ball cricket since he first began his career.

NZ has now had two middle order bats come in as make shaft openers(Blundell at MCG the previous) and immediately score centuries. Got to wonder why we have wasted so much time on mediorce specialist openers.

Considering how easy batting conditions were yesterday, NZ I think have actually not done that well. Should have scored around 40 runs more at the very least.

Devon Conway - almost 30 and debuting in test today. At Lords.

Will he be the first one to get a double-ton ?

Nah. They have scored at par rate for the pitch and day one of the series. Spanking will come if they still have wickets left above 350.

NZ 266/3 (91.1)
and Devon Conway gets his 150*

England bowled very well in the 2nd session. It was the right move to consolidate after losing Kane and Taylor. Can make up the difference today.

England are a ragged fielding outfit considering the size of their coaching staff.

Bumble being salty as usual in the commentary box, about batsmen getting some hydration lol

Stay salty

England should definitely produce green wickets for India series.it's been very boring so far.

or rather not. I would like that match to be a boring game where India wins

This new wicket keeper Bracey looks rubbish, bit part at best, im sure rory burns could have covered for a game

Quality spell by Mark wood, fast and furious with excellent skill set. He could be a key man against the vulnerable Indian batting line up this summer and looking ahead also in the ashes.

pak too has few good middle order batsmen in Usman salahuddin saud shakeel who could be tried in opening positions but unfortunately our system is rotten. Incompetent insecure people run the show

He's fairly inexperienced keeping on a ground that most keepers call one of them most difficult around for only the 2nd time ever, let's give him a chance. He'd have played as a batsman if Pope/Burns did it instead.

Broad and Anderson are finished. I swear if you give that many matches to Wood, Robinson and Woakes they would pick that many wickets too.

Agree he's a slow mover and anticipation is poor

He just doesn't look like a natural, his legs are too wide apart, and he has an exaggerated setup before the ball is delivered which cant help his focus. he is still new so will give him the benefit of the doubt but i think theres better options out there within this first xi let alone the county circuit.

does seem like a makeshift selection and england would have liked to have played him as a batsmen instead.

Relying on the debutant to carry us.

Hope the batsmen give a better account of themselves in the second innings.

Broad and Anderson are finished. I swear if you give that many matches to Wood, Robinson and Woakes they would pick that many wickets too.

They have been thrashed today so far. England relying on wood and debutant Robinson.

The pitch is a bit flat tho

Santner for sure unless there's some turn and the selectors choose a spinner and drop CdG for Boult.

If the pitch was flat, NZ would have been 314-3 not 7. Both of them are finished, they might be good for one or two games but will be liability rest of the times and they should not be played together.

Flattest lords pitch in 15 years according to Cricviz. Nichols played a poor knock in my opinion.

The pitch may not be overly lively but the bounce is definately uneven and is skidding through at times. I dont think its an easy pitch to pile on runs.
