1st Test between England (275 & 170/3) and New Zealand (378 & 169/6) ends in a draw

What an awful performance from England. They are easily the fourth best side after India, Australia and New Zealand given their inability to dominate at home.

Shows the standard of modern day test cricket. Quite poor

Yet India can't win in England.Since 2011 India have lost 11 matches here out of 14 with 2 wins only and this is gonna get even worse for mighty Indian team. They will lose 5-0 this time around.

Confirming Trent Boult has joined the Test squad and is at Lord’s today training with the non-playing squad members.

Southee has aged like a fine wine. Boult, Southee and Jamieson all three can be really hot to handle for our batsman in WTC final. Southee, especially in last few years, has been brilliant. He was player of series in that series Vs India last year.

We cope. Being number 1 for 5 years running, playing WTC final, beating AUS in their den two series in a row, owning teams at home, and above all, hosting the biggest annual show in cricket that is IPL - these are the little things we take solace from to hide the indignity of not winning a series in ENG.

Ollie Robinson is buying enough game time for himself before he gets dropped from the 2nd Test.

NZ are waiting for new bowl. Wagner hasn't been able to do much with old bowl.

Stokes buttler bairstow all need to return for England to stand any chance against India. India have a fabulous bowling lineup they'll eat these awful batsmen alive

How England need Ben Stokes for their Test side!?

Robinson is basically doing what Curran did Vs us last time.

Why are the tail enders taking the strike? Robinson got out by taking up too much of the strike, should have let burns face most of the new ball. Broad is doing the same

A few ducks in the England scorecard!

If NZ wrap up this tail soon, there'll be about 50 overs left today. If they were to go for the win, they need to score 170/180 in those 50 overs (or more if they bat into tomorrow) to get their lead to about 350. Then a day's play to bowl England out. Certainly will be difficult to win, and the longer this tail bats the lesser the chance becomes.

English batting is fragile right now. Its certainly possible that they collapse on the last day batting.

That's true, but I was thinking difficult more in terms of how quick NZ can score those 2nd innings runs. Williamson will surely not feel comfortable declaring below a lead of 300, and it might take well into tomorrow for NZ to score those runs, leaving less time to bowl England out. Certainly still possible though.

A very poor morning’s cricket from England, and in fact an embarrassing one at times. The NZ bowlers were all over the English players. But those who were left after the rout have fought impressively hard since lunch.

Really nuggety backyard knock from Burns, very old school. It’s certainly not been pretty, but I’ve enjoyed it. He deserves to carry his bat.

Draw looking most likely at the moment, with an outside chance of an NZ win. But England passing the follow-on target and their rugged rearguard action might just have saved this rain-affected Test match.

Good comeback from England. Draw is likely result as the deficit is reduced to less than 120.

Poor from NZ. Didnt press the advantage with the bat on day 2 and now struggling to bowl out England after reducing them to 140/6.

This last wicket partnership might just have saved England from an embarrassment.

New Zealand would look to bat 50 overs, so declaration may come tomorrow with about 75 overs left and target 300.

Kiwis need to explode here , and get quick runs and set up declaration, a chaseable target to England , this would make the remaining Test interesting.

If Convay gets to a fifty here he will become first batsman to get 200 and fifty in his debut test

Kiwis have not lost a wicket so far , but Broad and Anderson making the ball talk here , wickets are just round the corner.

Kiwis lead by 121 runs so far , By stumps Kiwis would like to be ahead by 225 at least

Robinson deserved that. Good review and Williamson is gone.

Its only one match, but is it fair to say williamson is being exposed in swinging conditions?

Seems like NZ are just using the two tests as preparation for WTC. Don't think they are interested in declaring before lunch tomorrow.

Compare the number of FC matches Ollie Robinson has played before his Test debut to the amount Naseem Shah and Musa Khan did.

Pick your proven domestic performers and you won't go far wrong.

This match would have been very interesting if the overs were not lost due to rain , Kiwis finish at 165 runs lead , I do not think they will be looking for a win here

The loss of a day's play has completely ruined this match. The sluggish pitch has also impacted run-rates and turned batting into a battle of attrition.

A superb day of Test cricket at Lord's, Tim Southee was excellent with the ball for New Zealand, Rory Burns battled hard to register his third Test century for England and England's bowlers then put in a very good collective effort before stumps.

Naseem did well in home conditions to be fair. Let's wait till Ollie tours India, Pakistan, Australia, NZ etc. before comparing them. Plenty of English bowlers look a million dollars at home and flop away just like Naseem regardless of FC experience. Woakes for one .

Another failure for Kane Williamson, he is only good to play against mediocre teams.

New Zealand can give a shot for win with a declaration at lunch. 275 runs and 70 overs for England to survive.

NZ lose Taylor (33, c Bracey, b wood)

NZ : 141/5 (45.5 ov), CRR : 3.07
Lead by 244 runs

The rain is getting heavier and the umpires, quite smartly, decide to take early lunch.

Had they sent Grandhomme ahead of Watling, they could have declared now. They can actually declare now also but don't think they will.

272 runs, probably 70 more overs if there is no rain in the day, can declare now.

NZ have declared..target 273

Don't think England would go for the target but will play positive Cricket.

New Zealand have declared on 169/6, setting England a target of 273

Very bold move.
But obviously New Zealand have done their calculation and estimate that England will not reach the required total.

60 overs left. England need 244 runs and have 10 wickets in hand.

Looks headed for a draw barring a truly spectacular batting collapse, and England don't have a Rishabh Pant to give them a chance of winning.

It would be more logical to say that England do not have Jos Buttler and Stokes in the lineup. If those two were around, they would not need a Pant.

If Buttler and Stokes fire, no target on day 5 is out of reach.

Even Butler and Stokes would not have been enough to chase this on a tough pitch like this. That Gabba track was flat.

Rory Burns c Southee b Wagner 25(81) [4s-4]

NZ 378 & 169/6 d
ENG 275 & 49/1 (23.5) CRR: 2.06
Day 5: 2nd Session - England need 224 runs

Tame draw?

Normally any England side would have had a good chance of chasing the total that has been set, but this particular pitch has uneven bounce and there is sideways movement available for the bowlers.

On this pitch, it’s just too many runs for almost any team to get in two (extended) sessions. So it’s either a batting collapse and an NZ win, or — more likely — a draw.

A real shame, because we could have been looking at a very close finish on the final day if we had not lost so many overs to rain. (and then yet more “possible” overs have been wiped off by an atrocious over rate from both teams as well).

Reckon we've lost almost a whole session due to the slow over-rate in this test. Both sides should be docked their match fees for the series.

Sibley has looked absolutely awful for his 19* (77), my word. Reminds me of the hopeless Jennings.

2 down - just a session a bit to go can there be a NZ upset on the cards here.

Draw looking likely but watching England in their 2nd innings has so far been painful.

Another awful intentless performance from England with bat. They have a minnow level batting lineup without Stokes and Buttler who generally bring them to life with their counter-attacking approach.

It's kinda surprising to see England in top 3 in Test with this batting lineup

Match petering out now into a tame draw. Expect the captains to shake hands at the end of the next hour or so.

What a pathetic test match ,i'm one of the biggest lower of test cricket but sorry to say this is not how top team play test cricket regardless of results .

If we didnt lose a full day to rain this test would be shaping for an exciting finish with all results open on day 5.

If this indian test team can get target of 270 in 75 over to chase then most definitely they will go for a win no matter whats the end results

If England had Stokes and Buttler in the team, they'd have probably gone for the target as well. The rest of them (barring Root) aren't capable of batting quickly.
