i was actually in Pakistan when this happned for summer vacation. I was home in sargodha which is about 200 miles away from lahore. I was sleeping and the earth quake actually shook my house, and my bed and woke me up. Everyone rushed outside and we could see it swinging a bit. Shukar Allah ka, that no one was injured.

I am starting a new job on Monday which will involve some travel to the quake affected regions. I will report back to PakPassion with pictures of the reconstruction and rehabilitation effort currently still ongoing.

well I can tell you that some fantastic progress has been made. But given the scale of the disaster, there is still much work to be done.

But anyway....not sure when my first field visit will be. Will start baggering the boss on day 1, and i wont stop until he sends me.

I worked for 2 Months as a volunteer in Balakot. We were the first one to reach Ganool, a 11 Hour Hike from Balakot and Paraas an 18 hour hike, amidst fallen mountains and tricky pathways. Have a look at these pictures which i took at that time

Yes many times, and each time i visited towns like Balakot, Allai, battagram, Garhi Habibullah, Bagh etc i am amazed at Human resilience. I have seen Jewellery shops, shopping centers open in Balakot.

This tragic event happened almost 3 years ago during Ramadan causing the loss of a huge number of lives during a time when the world was still recovering of the Asian Tsunami.

Anyone have updates on how the affected areas have recovered and how re-housing of those displaced is going? Are the promised funds actually being spent?

The government has been claiming that they have built 50% of the houses but the actual figure is less than 10%.

Please anyone with spare clothing and blankets, pass it onto the nearest charity sending these to kashmir.

I believe that since that day, Pakistan have lurched from one disaster to another. I don't think we have ever recovered from that day, before the earthquake Pakistan's economy was growing and had some stability, but the earthquake paralysed Pakistan, the relief efforts were very brave and the Pakistani community for once rallied round.

Bhagat Singh (Punjabi: ਭਗਤ ਸਿੰਘ بھگت سنگھ, [pə̀ɡət̪ sɪ́ŋɡ]) (28 September 1907 – 23 March 1931 ) was an Indian freedom fighter, considered to be one of the most influential revolutionaries of the Indian independence movement. He is often referred to as Shaheed Bhagat Singh (the word shaheed meaning "martyr").
Born to a Jat Sikh family which had earlier been involved in revolutionary activities against the British Raj, Singh, as a teenager, became an atheist and had studied European revolutionary movements. He also became attracted to anarchism and marxist ideologies. He became involved in numerous revolutionary organizations. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) and became one of its leaders, converting it to the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). Singh gained support when he underwent a 64-day fast in jail, demanding equal rights for Indian and British political prisoners.He was hanged for shooting a police officer in response to a police lathi charge leading to the demise of veteran freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai. it was a very tragic disaster ...my family lost 2 houses in that earth quake in muzafarabad ..thank god they were empty ..the whole of our old village was gone ..i when there in 2006 and couldnt reconise the place

but there was one positive thing in this whole tragic event too ..it showed us kashmiris how much ppl of pakistan love us ...the amount of AID from all over pakistan was just amazing ..and ppl from as far as karachi came and helped us ..and my brother tells me after the quake some poor patans came to his friends village and worked on building back the destroyed homes for a whole month ..after theyv finished the work the villagers gathered and paied the patans there salary ..all of them refused the money and said we didnt do it fo money we did it for humanity ..

and jamat ud dawah guys who most ppl call terriorists who hate "kafir" and want them all dead helped build back two destroyed hindu temples and helped a lot of tiny minority hindu community

the earth quake was devastating but it did make us kashmiris more patrotic pakistanis and better humans

I was in AJK in school at that time it was really sudden every one was in class and suddenly me sat at the back everyone started to run off i though it was something like a bomb i fell on the floor as well nothing happend to the school building but seriously i don't think people realized in some parts that how much damage this was going to do

Sadly, given that the Himalayas in Kashmir are tectonically active and highly vulnerable to earthquakes it's just a matter of time before an even bigger earthquake strikes this region and it will have catastrophic effects.

Both nations should start planning now for such an eventuality.

Srinagar, Dec 9: A study by a prominent US based seismologist has warned that Kashmir Valley is likely to be hit by an earthquake of largest ever magnitude. But the study does not specify any particular time-frame.
However, the Kashmir based experts recommend the state government to undertake micro-seismic zoning in the Valley to minimize loss of human lives in case of any such eventuality.
The study conducted by Roger Bilham, a seismologist and professor of Geology at the University of Colorado at Boulder US, states that the major quake with magnitude 9 is likely to trigger landslides that would dam the Jhelum river, which drains from the Kashmir Valley into Pakistan.
“That could put the Kashmir Valley under water within three months - and would also threaten disastrous flooding in Pakistan if the waters were released too quickly. The two nations should develop a cooperative plan to deal with the aftermath of a Kashmir mega-quake,” Prof Bilham states in the study.
Prof Bilham states that his new Global Positioning System (GPS) data readings revealing the gradual movement of rocks in the Zanskar Mountains north of the Kashmir Valley show that earlier estimates of the maximum possible quake in the region were too low.
“In this region, the Indian plate is slowly burrowing under the Tibetan plateau. Studies on where the relative movement of the Tibetan plateau was slowest, indicates where compression is building up, and a rupture is eventually likely to occur. I expected this to be in the Pir Panchal range, to the south of the Kashmir Valley, but instead it was in the Zanskar range to the north.”
“This means that the zone likely to rupture when a quake eventually happens could be 200 kilometres wide, rather than about 80 kilometres, as was previously thought. The zone would encompass the Kashmir Valley - including the city of Srinagar, home to some 1.5 million people. If slippage occurs over a length of 300 kilometres, as is possible, a mega-quake of magnitude 9 is the likely result. Given building codes and population in the region, that could mean a death toll of 300,000 people,” the study states.

Oh i remember that day like it was yesterday. I was a kid back then and i remember i had an exam the next day. I was having breakfast at the time when everything started shaking. I put the glass of milk down and ran into the living room where my dad was and the others came there too. It seemed to go on forever and i could hear the neighbours screaming and praying loudly. It was absolutely horrible and seemed to go on forever. When it stopped i went back and found that the glass of milk hadn't spilled which being a kid suprised me.
