I believe this was his mistake.

Until that time, a few including me were willing to accept him as someone who was going to fix Pakistan but once he declared himself president, he became one of many dictators of the past.

I wonder what Pakistan's political map would have looked like had he stayed on as a military leader and handed power to an elected government, instead of pretending to be a civilian admin?

It doesn't matter if he would have stepped down as COAS or stayed on or given himself another title. The power till his ouster as President lied with him and the Army.

After his recent comments about being the biggest supporter of LeT and JuD and his willingness to form a political alliance with them, I am not sure how his staying on in whatever shape would have benefited Pakistan in any long term meaningful ways.
