What's new

2nd Test: England VS West Indies at Headingley.

Massive 6 for Pietersen again. This is how good a striker of the ball he is.

A startling statistic - this is his 25th Test match and he already has 8 tons, and 4 scores of more than 150. Amazing stuff.

Pietersen finally goes smashing Bravo out to deep cover well caught by Taylor

570/7 declared.

KP out. And there is the declaration.
7/570dec.

Plunkett finished on 44*
Pieterson was out for 226.

Forget the bowling attack - 226 runs scored that perfectly against ANY opposition is a brilliant innings - can't wait for the hilites!

I havn't seen Sidebotoom bowl before. I honestly thought that he'd be a right hander. Even though on ICC cricket captain, he is a left hander. LOL!

I have a feeling that if Harmy doesn't perform well this test, his career might well just be down the drain. He starts of with a no-ball.

Wicket!
LBW.
Sidebottom gets his first as Gayle goes.
1/17.

Hitting leg stump there.

GONE! Brilliant stuff!
Swinging back in and Ganga leaves it. Clipping the bails. Great biowling from Sidebottom!
His 2nd test wicekt.

West Indies are hopeless. Joseph in now, Sarwan is still hurt after that dive at the boundary yesterday.

Edged and gone, Harmison gets a wicket caught by Strauss at 1st slip. Joseph gone for 13

68/3

Harmison takes a wicket (I can't believe I just said that), caught by Strauss at slip.

edged and caught at Gully! Plunkett in the act now getting Devon Smith on the drive and caught by Cook. Good bowling by England

74/4

Edged again but through first and second slip and Bravo survives + gets 4.

Morton gone now caught behind off Harmison. He's starting to bowl well now. Morton hates the decision. Bat hit the pad replays suggest but Rudi gave it. Very harsh on Morton and the West Indies.

82/5 now

Sky Sports is having a spaz! The picture is going all green and now the "temporary fault" screen is up.

I make that 2-1 on the bad decisions by the way.

Morton's dismissal just now and Colly getting away with that LBW in the first test vs Ramdin getting away with an LBW in the first test.

Needless to say some of the folks on Caribbean Cricket already seem to think they've been robbed.

Cook's lbw in the first innings was said to be going an inch over according to Hawkeye but it looked pretty dead live though.

94/5 still. Bravo and Ramdin the only recognised batsmen left.

edged and caught behind. Plunkett invites the drive and Ramdin obliges and gets the knick.

94/6

I'd have given it!

Use yer' bat lad.

125/8 at the moment. Bravo the last remaining batsman got bowled around his legs by Sidearse.

WI 146 all out. Sarwan didn't bat. still 424 runs behind.
probably a 10 min break and 8-10 overs left in the day

Pathetic batting performance by the West Indies, really should have done better.

Edged and dropped by Matt "Gojo" Prior. His true colours show. Gayle gets a life.

7 overs left or 25 min (6:30 local time) whichever comes first
rain expected tomorrow morning and clear by lunch - Boycott

Sidebottom gets a wicket with the last ball of the day. Powell shoulders arms and is plumb lbw :)))

22/2 at close

what a performance by bottom side .. ermm i mean sidebottom :16: :16:

Appears as though there'll be no play today, that's if it's raining buckets in Leeds as it is in London.

It's not that bad where I am, just some rain ovrenight and some grey clouds.

But I'm a 10 minute train journey and 8 minute walk away from headingley

It's dire, weather - wise in London! So how much delay in start of play? I'll check cricinfo

Is Sidebottom any relation to Arnie Sidebottom from Yorkshire?

Father / son?
I thought that, but then Ryan Sidebottom doesnt play for Yourkshire - and I would have thought that would be his obvious county. Unless he's played for them in the past.

Oh well - cricinfo, here I come...

UPdate:

Yep hes Arnie's boy! And played for Yorkshie from 1997-2004. Been at Notts 3 seasons

I've just got this sinking feeling that the West Indies will survive again due to the rain today and the next 2 days.

I thought that too but we only really have to take another 7 wickets to win. I cant see the West Indies getting out of this, and it will be a disgrace if they do. This has been our most complete performance in a test since Old Trafford v Pakistan.

Oh yeah, Sidebottom. Its a bit embarassing that a two a penny county bowler has outperformed the rest of our seamers, but he has done an excellent job and proved that all you have to do to bowl out the lower ranked sides in test cricket is get the ball in the right areas. I guess he will turn out like John Lever who had one great test and never reached those heights again, but oh well.

That was be tragic. Seriously, England deserve this test match.

Either that or if C Gayle does a Hanif Mohammed.

anyone living in leeds, could you tell us how the weather is like. I hope we get play tomorrow

Gayle gone caught behind off Plunkett. 30/3. We need the wickets quick before anymore rain.

11.35am The rain is heavier than yesterday and unrelenting ... as are the emails from around the world telling us how hot it is where you all live. Now, that's lovely, and I am glad it's stifling in Warsaw, Baltimore and the like, but that's not much help for us at Leeds. And for those who are asking why we are moaning when it's 50 degrees as that is hot, we mean Fahrenheit and not Celsius. Old world over here, and an even older commentator.

Yeah so it is over there, it's slowed down at my house though a bit.

The weather is not likely to get better, West Indies may have a chance of a draw, but, even an hours play will be enough for England to clean up the West Indies. It is looking glum for the Windies!

57/5 with more rain. Only 4 more wickets to get if Sarwan isn't coming back which looks highly likely.

Morton and Bravo putting up some resistance. Bravo watching the ball very well and finding some neat strokes through the legside. Morton has too many shots for the conditions though.

86/5

West Indies 103/5 - morton and Bravo battling away here.

Month onto bowl now..

Morton just hooks it up in the air and Prior takes an easy catch running in. Harmison gets his first wicket.

120/6 now.

And that's what proved his downfall, he goes for the hook which he should have left and ends up getting himself out. Afridi like in the way he brainfarted.

50 up for Dwayne Bravo. Superb punchy knock under pressure. Pity his team couldnt match him.

And England inflict the heaviest defeat ever. Surely some of the older English fans will be enjoying this as they may have memories of the time when their team was being blackwashed by those Windian Legends. Reversal of fortunes now.

Lever played for Essex, he was a decent left-arm swing bowler who took about 70 wickets for England, he didnt play in many series...

Lever had an awesome debut...he took 10 wickets and scored a half century against an Indian side that included Bedi, Gavaskar and Chandrasekhar. Lever's wickets led to Bedi making a big thing about England applying grease to the ball (with no evidence) but I think he only cared because his team lost the test and the series convincingly! Its quite a well known test among England fans because we never win matches in India anymore, let alone a series.

Sidebottom just reminds me of him, hopefully he does not fall away like Lever did

Oh yeah, a decent win, against a poor side that was out of luck. I want the series scoreline to end up something more convincing than 1-0 or 2-0 though, there are no excuses if it doesnt.

Sidebottom was good and Harmison was approaching an acceptable standard towards the end of the match but Im not convinced that we will consistently take 20 wickets unless we continue to improve.

Well that was pretty emphatic. To think even Bangladesh had a smaller margin of defeat to India in the 2nd test. Wonder who they'll call up to replace Sarwan.

Well done england on a decent win. West indies like most touring sides in early summer simply cant handle the swinging/seaming ball. Aslong as england play like this they should win series 2-0 or 3-0 with ease.

West indies were always expected to struggle.

It was an impressive margin of victory, but to be 1-0 after 2 tests was the bare minimum requirement prior to the series and they have fulfilled that. Hopefully it leads them onto winning all of the test and one day series this summer, which actually would be an achievement, and should be the target against two ordinary touring sides.
If the injured big guns are reintroduced and we slowly remove the rubbish from our team along the way, then come September we could be ready to build a new era under Peter Moores.

will chanders be fit for next test?

You'd kind of hope so, for all his irritating tendencies he's an accomplished player and boy do the Windies need him!

I actually thought Devon Smith looked pretty good in this test, slightly careless dismissals and even Sylvester Joseph looked OK in the first dig.

Morton scored a few in the second innings but with the approach he showed he ain't gonna go very far unless he has a rethink fast!
