Australia won the toss and elected to bat.

Good to have a sensible start time for the u.k. viewers after the last 2 tests.

Poms need to strike early here . They need to attack and look for wickets

Agree ,first session is vital here for England.

Meanwhile Glen Maxwell tweets.. "I don't think it's completely out of the question, that England might not take a wicket today...#road #bullandbangers #due""

Would've been very tempted to not pick at least one of Broad or Ali, quite possibly both.

If England want to win , they need to create opportunities , instead of opposition making mistakes. There is no other way. If Australia get a big score here , it will be tough to out bat Aussies.

Warner looking good. If England don't get him out soon, it will be a long day in the field for them.

Warner must have a train to catch as it may be reduced services due to the holidays.

England need to sack their selectors. Who picked an entire squad of 130k right arm trundlers to tour Oz?

Why is Crane even on the tour if they are scared to pick him?

Oz to declare in both innings, England to lose by 300 runs & they will deserve every bit of to for the absolute lack of imagination in their selections.

Seems like a long day in the field for England with Warner approaching a test hundred. They are staring at a huge first innings total already.

Terrible advert for test cricket.

Flat pitch and defensive, wide bowling right from the first session.

Why would anyone watch this?

Lol they still picked PPers favourite Stuard Broad :yk

England selecting ineffective home track bullies to open the bowling based purely on senior status, remember all those years of hearing how we should be emulating them? :yk2

Useless Warner is the biggest FTB right now.

Can’t wait till he inevitably goes downhill from here.
Joke of a batsmen feasting on medium pace pies on pancakes.

His hand eye coordination has gone down and also his bat size.

Aussies because hur dur Ashes, beating England.

This series is put on a pedestal and it's usually garbage.

Still its the best cricket we have had in Australia for at least two or three years.

Some fans from outside England and Australia really don’t like the fact that English and Australian fans will always have the Ashes to follow, enjoy and cherish do they? I’ve seen some awfully sour remarks in this thread and elsewhere lately.

But they watch it even though they dont like it.

Smith the beast at it again.

Why is Malan bowling on first day? Is Moeen injured?

Sour grapes. It was hilarious to see some of the jealous ones suggesting moving Ashes to neutral venues. We don't have glorious cricketing legacy to match the Ashes, so let us bring those who have to our level.

How Khawaja keep getting opportunities? A pure rubbish player!!!

This is one of the worst bowling display by England.

Top job by Australia, looking good to win another match.

He is in a small group of cricketers who hold the dubious honour of really sucking against England. It is particularly rare for Australians to have England as their bogey team, lol.

He has always been a walking wicket against us and I personally do not rate him whatsoever. But for some reason he scores runs against some other teams so he keeps getting picked.

Australians scoring at a much slower rate given Warner has got 40% of total runs.

Steve smith is goat. Comparing virat to him is joke and insult to steve smith.

Disagree completely, Kholi, Smith, Root and Williamson plus a few others are excellent batsmen, at this moment Smith is the standout but in a year or two it could be completely different. Kholi is no joke.

Not a insult at all

Kohli is on its way to become ATG as well, it's natural for Smith to be compared to it closest competitor.

I personally don't see the hype behind such a one sided series. More often than not England get thrashed while touring Australia. I don't see much cherishing by England fans during those moment. But to each their own I guess

I think the problem people have is when England downplay every other series, talk about every other series being preparation and trial for Ashes, disrespecting every other team. And the complete obsession with the Ashes at the cost of everything else. i don't see the same from Australia at all. They create the right amount of hype just before and during the Ashes. When people mock the Ashes or the fans, it's always the English team and fans.

For mediocre performances like this no less :)))

Never got the hype with the Ashes, it usually sucks.

India-Pakistan and SA-Aus is the pinnacle of cricket (India-Pak in all formats)/Test cricket.

And the even more hilarious misconception is that so many people think England cares about the Ashes way more than Australia does. Evident above. I guess these people just read a lot of stuff on the Internet / watch Sky and have never met an Australian.

All the hype from the ashes does have an effect, everyone knows that the ashes is being played and follow the series (even when they dont like it).

I would never have known that NZ were playing the WI if I didnt accidently click on the thread about the match today.

Pity about the pinnacle of cricket in that no player from NZ will ever be able to play in the pinnacle of their chosen sport.

Steve Smith is absolutely frightening at the MCG.

He is essentially 364* since last getting out in 2014. :murali

It's cricket, like majority of the world, only a small minority gives a damn about the sport.

One of his other pinnacles of cricket (India v Pakistan) does not even get played bilaterally or in Tests anymore for political reasons. Great pinnacle!

So you disagree?

Buzz wise, the Ashes doesn't compare to India-Pakistan and quality wise there really isn't anything quite like Aus-SA in Tests.

There's the CWC Final, but that would fall short of India-Pakistan if one of those teams weren't involved.

I love how Aussies and Englishmen are so protective of their little urn.

Wake up to reality, your rivalry is boring as hell.

I'd give up a dozen Ashes series for one India-Pak T20 :)))

This fixture is a non event and that's been the case for a good while now.

It is the holiday season so of course, people are following whatever is on currently.

Terrible negative cricket is still terrible negative cricket.

England were bowling David Malan as a defensive option right when they were getting into the game. If that is something to cherish and enjoy, then it is very evident why cricket is fast declining in England.

I wouldn't give the series a second thought if it wasn't the holidays. Not like there's any reason to follow it aside from free time and background noise.

So I guess we wont see you post in this thread again.

We need more classic encounters between New Zealand and West Indies.

:))) Markhor with a big upper cut
It makes no sense because we're literally playing them because there is no one else to play.

In fact, we're the ones who cut one Test because it was given it wouldn't have been of a good standard.

Maybe CA should have taken the same steps and cut this down to 2 Tests, which is more fitting given the quality of the opposition.

That would have been silly, 85,000+ turned up today to the fourth test which is a dead rubber.

Thats about $6,500,00 in gate takings, probably more than NZ will take over the whole summer and CA take that on a dead rubber.

Another shot at NZC? Yes we know it spins a lot of money, but lets not pretend like the cricket isn't usually trash. More series like this and we'll see if those numbers remain.
