What's new

6 years anniversary of the 2019 CWC Final Robbery which denied New Zealand a deserved title win

New Zealand had their fair share of luck in the tournament too. They benefit from two washouts and also the rain interruption in the semifinal.

In the final itself, they batted very negatively and could have gone for more boundaries in the death overs.

Martin Guptill could also have gone for a boundary on the last ball of the Super Over instead of dabbing the ball and going for two runs. He knew the occasion and still didn’t try to win the World Cup for New Zealand.

They got what they deserved, but the timing of this troll thread is very good so props to you.

Great win for England but that England side can’t be regarded as a great white ball cricket team.

They were absolutely poor in 2023 World Cup and despite playing at home, both the Asian teams outclassed them and qualified to finals.

The likes of Roy and Bairstow don’t even have 5000 ODI runs which tells that they just hit a purple patch and thanks to batting friendly pitches at home and the multiple strokes of luck they got in Finals, they went on to win only one ODI tournament.

Stokes barely played white ball cricket after that, Buttler declined later as well and Root has remained the consistent accumulator he was known for in ODIs. Archer has barely played white ball cricket post that. Not a single England player can claim to go down as ATG in ODI cricket.

England won both World Cups in the space of 3 years. That is more than enough to regarded as a great white ball team.

England 2016 - 2022 is one of the must successful white ball teams in history. Their worst finish in any tournament in that period was a semifinal and they won two World Cups.

2023 and onwards has been a weak period for them though, but let’s see how they shape up in 2027. The conditions will be to their liking and they have got some highly talented youngsters coming through like Jamie Smith.

The then Indian captain Virat Kohli would have probably been in jail even now if it were his team at the receiving end instead of New Zealand.

For sure!

He was one step ahead of the game though and decided to score 1 run and lose in the semi final to avert the risk of any jail time.

England were a dangerous white ball team during that time. No denying.

But they robbed the World Cup from NZ in the final.

Fact : NZ never lost the World Cup final
There cannot be a winner if there’s no loser.

Only 1 team lost the World Cup final
And it’s England which was undone by the over throw from Stokes’ bat.

Has anyone ever asked what Martin Guptill was trying to do on the last ball of the Super Over? If he was Asian, he would have been accused of match-fixing.

Under extreme pressure, only the Aussies can play the no-boundary, 2 runs shot. There was an IPL game a long while back. Super Over chase. Smith and Watson came out - it was like they just said to the rest of the more-celebrated guys - this is out of your league, let's handle it. And Smith played it brilliantly, playing just the right safest perfect shots into the gaps for couples when they were needed.

Reality is reality.

NZ were robbed off the World Cup. Umpires shouldn’t have given an extra four of Martin Guptill throw which England got lucky due to it hitting Ben Stokes bat.

Moreover, you don’t decide a WC based on who hit more boundaries. This is international cricket and not some 4s and 6s hitting competition.

NZ can win as many World Cups as they want in future but they will always be remembered as the team that played better cricket on this day in search of their first WC win but ended on losing side. :inti

Damn, why there is no Kane Williamson emoji on PP?

While what happened to NZ was sad, it was accidental. Stokes didn't plan to cheat.

NZ could've closed the game by getting Stokes out but there was a fumble in the field.

All in all, it was a great game. Best World Cup game and best ODI in history for me.

Err .... I remember a certain specialist Pakistani batsman averaging a fantabulous 23 at an equally fantabulous SR of 69 in a grand total of 5 World Cups.

Pakistan has not reached World Cup semi-final since 14 years and in this century, Pakistan has played equal number of World Cup semi-finals as Kenya

by points table alone, England were ahead.

Know what will make this the greatest thread ever?

5 runs needed to win the 3rd Test for India. Stokes bowling. Inside edge hits the helmet behind the keeper. India win. Karma smiles at Stokes. :kp

Well Pakistan have themselves to blame. They shot themselves in the foot in the opening match when they got bundled for 103 vs West Indies which killed their NRR, it was an uphill battle from the day onwards
