Usman Khawaja and Aaron Finch are content to let administrators make a call on Australia’s potential return to Pakistan, the prospect of which grows slimmer each day.

Finch’s team face India in a three-match ODI series which starts on Saturday in Sydney.

Australia then tackle India and Pakistan in two away ODI series which will serve as building blocks for a World Cup defence which is looking decidedly shaky.

Dates and venues for the trip to India were confirmed recently but details of the second series, in which Steve Smith and David Warner might potentially return from year-long suspensions, were yet to be locked in.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) remains upbeat that at least some part of the five-match series in March will be staged in Lahore or Karachi, marking Australia’s first visit since 1998.

The more likely scenario is the United Arab Emirates will host the entire series, with Cricket Australia (CA) citing safety concerns.

Most teams have refused to tour Pakistan since 2009, when gunmen attacked a bus carrying Sri Lankan cricketers.

“Obviously, whatever Cricket Australia tells us, that’ll be the big thing,” Khawaja told reporters.

“We’ll leave it to the administrators. They’re pretty good at taking care of us and making sure everything’s safe.

“I was born in Pakistan so it won’t be too different for me but it’s still a while away and we’ve (now) got three big games against the best nation in the world.”

CA chief executive Kevin Roberts declared to AAP a fortnight ago that “we’ll never compromise the safety of our players” and “we’ll be taking advice from the experts”.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) advises Australians to “reconsider your need to travel to Pakistan due to the volatile security situation and high threat of terrorist attack, kidnapping and sectarian violence”.

Tim Paine, George Bailey and Ben Cutting were part of a World XI who travelled to Pakistan in 2017, while compatriot Chris Green visited Lahore during last year’s Pakistan Super League.

“It would be great to get cricket back in Pakistan,” Finch said on Friday.

“The passion their fans have got and just the amount of fans ... (there are) some pretty empty stadiums in the UAE.

“Anytime there’s cricket back in Pakistan, they’re swinging from the rafters to get a seat.

“Is it the right time? I’m not sure ... that’s between the boards and the ACA (Australian Cricketers’ Association) to work through.”

I think that Australia should send a squad full of Pakistani expats :). Usman Khawaja was born in Pakistan so no doubt he'd be willing to go. There's that Fawad Ahmed leg spinner too. If ICC can give special dispensation to Usman Qadir and make him eligible to play for Australia that would be great too :)

Finch said he willing to go, the Australian players who played for World XI i.e Ben Cutting, George Bailey and Tim Paine would obviously be up for going too. I'm sure they can find a few more players willing to go as well :) Australia playing in Pakistan would be very good and send a good message Pakistan is safe. I would love just 1 or 2 games to be played there but I'm not getting my hopes up

half way I thought u were being sarcastic :p

Very nice of Usman and Finch. I somehow feel Australia of all teams will be the first to tour Pakistan. The players clearly don't seem to have a problem. Let's hope it materializes and the people can enjoy a strong side tour Pakistan!

Well this is good to hear, but its still like they mentioned up to the Australian cricket council.

great news indeed I hope they will send atleast a decent 11 to tour Pakistan so that other teams such as England newzeland can also consider visiting and playing here

Australia will never tour Pak.

They did not tour Pak when it was pretty stable (compared to these days), why would they now? SA or Eng is Pak's only hope.

They are less arrogant and proud these days, and can do with some minnow bashing as well.

I don’t think they will tour, but the chances are a big higher today than they were previously.

It has nothing to do with the players or CA really, its down to the government to give the all clear. CA cannot tour unless they have clearance from the government. Without government clearance should something go wrong then it could destroy Australian cricket.

Where was the minnow bashing in the recent series in the UAE? My God have you ever said anything positive about Pakistan cricket team?

They are still arrogant towards lesser teams especially Bangladesh. They have cancelled all home and away tours with BD for some time now.

One of their execs made some very rude comments about BD cricket like how it wont be able to compete with Aus club teams etc.

Just curious, have any players come out and ever said "We won't be open to playing cricket in Pakistan even if safety concerns are overcome" ?

They say that they will leave it up to the experts and the PCB has brought in these experts who then said it is safe to tour, and players still haven't.
