Even though Afghanistan defeating Sri Lanka wasn't really surprising, not many anticipated a hammering. The manner in which Afghanistan dominated both with the bat and the ball once again showcased that they are indeed a huge force to reckon with in the shortest format. At one stage, Sri Lanka were 75/9 with Rashid Khan not even picking up a single wicket. And again with the bat, the openers put on a breathtaking display scoring over 80 runs in the powerplay to kill the chase.

That performance would have definitely turned many heads not only from India and Pakistan but also from Bangladesh. In an ideal world, Bangladesh should have been favourites heading into a T20I against Afghanistan. But despite their success in the ODI format, Bangladesh just haven't been able to crack the T20 code and as a result have seen Afghanistan usurp them in this format.

The onus is definitely on the senior pros like Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah to try and make a statement. For Bangladesh to put up a fight in Australia later this year, something has to change dramatically over the next two months, starting from Tuesday (August 30). For starters, their batting order needs to bat with plenty of freedom. While the Afghanistan batting lineup has plenty of flair, Bangladesh lack it big time. In the bowling department, they do have the likes of Mustafizur Rahman and Shakib Al Hasan to bank on but striking early against this lineup will be the key.

When:Bangladesh vs Afghanistan, 6 PM local time, 2:00 PM GMT

Where:Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah

What to expect:Conditions are expected to be hot and humid. The Afghanistan batsmen will fancy their chances of putting up a big score at this venue that is known for its short boundaries.

Ahead of the clash with Bangladesh in the Asia Cup 2022, Afghanistan's star spinner Rashid Khan has said that despite participating in many leagues, playing for the national side always comes first for the players. Afghanistan will lock horns with Bangladesh on Tuesday at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The side will be led by all-rounder Mohammad Nabi and sees one change from the 16-member squad that toured Ireland. Samiuallah Shinwari has replaced Sharafuddin Ashraf, who is now a part of the reserves. Spinner Noor Ahmed has also been added to the side.

"We want to play a lot of international cricket that gives youngsters the opportunity to play and get a chance. We all play different leagues but national duty comes first for your country. We want to focus on the next match and not think about the previous match. It is past. It is not in our hands that teams take us seriously or lightly," Rashid Khan said in a pre-match press conference.

Afghanistan managed to restrict Sri Lanka to 105 and registered their second biggest win in T20I in terms of balls remaining. They will be flying high on the performances of their bowling unit, led by Fazalhaq Farooqi. The pacer was adjudged as the player of the match for his 3-wicket haul.

"Tomorrow's conditions in Sharjah are different than what we faced in Dubai. We want to give 100 per cent and enjoy the game. I am not an all-rounder. A player who can bat and ball and can bat in different positions, then it is great," he said.

"If you have such players like Hardik Pandya in the team then it gives the captain a lot of options. His hard work has paid off. Last year when I played with him, I think he has improved as a captain a lot in IPL. When a player gets such kind of responsibility then it makes him a better player," he added.

He said the team prepares seriously irrespective of the opponent.

"We as players enjoy this kind of format. We are playing in Sharjah after a long time. We never think about any opposition whether it is weak or strong. Tomorrow if you play Hong Kong then the preparation is the same or if it is India then also it is the same," Khan said.

Squad: Mohammad Nabi (c), Najibullah Zadran, Afsar Zazai, Azmatullah Omarzai, Farid Ahmad Malik, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Hazratullah Zazai, Ibrahim Zadran, Karim Janat, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Najibullah Zadran, Naveen ul Haq, Noor Ahmad, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Rashid Khan and Samiullah Shinwari.

Short boundaries in Sharjah will slightly reduce the gap between the Afghan and BD batters but still I just do not see Bangladesh putting up a decent total against Afg bowling attack or chase down 150+ even.

And without Liton, who's one of their better stroke makers , it'll be even more tough.

I think this is the most important game for BD in this tournament.

Win for BD here should also knock out Sri Lanka.

Afghanistan heavy favourites going into this considering it’s a T20 format game which Bangladesh doesn’t play well being played in UAE which is practically their turf.

Better to bat first in sharjah I guess. It was the only venue in the last world T20 that had a bat first bias.

Bangladesh win the toss and elect to bat first

Afghanistan (Playing XI): Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmanullah Gurbaz(w), Ibrahim Zadran, Najibullah Zadran, Karim Janat, Mohammad Nabi(c), Rashid Khan, Azmatullah Omarzai, Naveen-ul-Haq, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Mohammad Naim, Anamul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan(c), Afif Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim(w), Mosaddek Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman

An Afg win today will probably mean BD vs SL game may become a knockout game

Bangladesh chose to bat first. Why? Should've bowled first.

That’s because it’s not going to be easy to chase against the Afghan spinners for most teams.

In fact Afghan is the only team that prefers batting first than chasing on most occasions as that’s their strength.

Supposed to be a belter of a Sharjah pitch according to pitch report.

If you want to punish someone make them listen to this commentary. Manjrekar, Russell, Athar.

Athar Ali , Russel Arnold ,Sanjay Manjrekar - this has to be the worst commentary trio ever surely.?

Not going according to plan.

Should've bowled first.

BD - 14/2 (4 overs).

Look like the afghanis going to win today again. The super four stage is going to be exciting.

Man the umpiring has been horrendous in this tournament so far. That was a plumb lbw, how did he miss that

Shakib and Mushfiq already in.

This game is only going to go one way.

Damn, mushfiq only averages 19 in T20 after playing so many matches. LOL ... can't BD find a better replacement for him?

Mujeeb is owning Bangladesh. You should swallow your ego and see him off. He is bowling brilliantly.

BD - 22/2 (5 overs).

These two need to stay for 7-10 overs. Build a partnership.

I think the way to play Mujeeb is look for the fuller ball and slog sweep it out of the park

He will walk all over you if you are trying to guess every ball that he bowls

Reverse sweep attempt against a guy who destroyed the top order lol Nice "intelligent" cricket

Play straight. He is not just an off spinner.

Mujeeb runs through the top order in the powerplay with BD reeling at 3 wickets down. Then Rashid Khan comes on for his first ball :)

Afghans should win by a big margin again.

BD need a miracle here.

BD - 28/3 (6 overs).

BD as it is a weak T20 side. When they are up against good bowling they look even more mediocre.

What a useless performance

I was so looking forward to this match!

BD crowd at the ground is chanting, "Vua. Vua. Vua."

Vua is a derogatory word. It means incompetent.

lol just switched on wth, Afghans are hella determined this tournament but have they peaked
early?(Considering this is somewhat a long tournament)

I think Afghanistan is gonna beat either India or Pakistan in super 4.
Afghanistan has potential to win the tournament and they surely can be finalists.

Afghanistan spinners are the most threatening spinners in T20 by a mile. You should pay respect when conditions favor them. BD didn't do that. BD is still not doing that. They are trying to cross bat.

Nabi is in the attack. No respite for BD.

Nabi, Mujeeb, Rashid - 12 overs of high quality spin.

I can see Bangladeshi supporters turning to PCT supporters within this week. :afridi

Afghanistan just need a decent pacer to pair with fazalhaq farooqi and their T20i team is complete.

They can win against top teams even in foreign conditions.

Afghanistan has become a major playing nation in T20s. They have unearthed a rally good fast bowler in Fazalhaq and if they can unearth a world class batsman in the middle order, then reaching World Cup semi-finals or even the final in Asian conditions is not out of reach for them.

What is surprising is that Bangladesh have been playing top level cricket for close to 25 years now and they are still relatively punching bags of the game. SL established themselves as a heavyweight in the game merely 10-12 years in the game. Afghanistan has grown leaps in bounds in 5-6 years. But Bangladesh, apart from their mini golden run from 2015-2017, has not improved much.

BD - 50/4 (10 overs).

Pitch doesn't seem that flat. It seems a bit two-paced.

Looks plumb, maybe the umpire got one correct for once.

BD is still relying on players who made debut 15 years back. No new promising stars. Ashraful has better strike rate than these guys except may be Sowmya sarkar. By the way what happened to him?

Not really.. they were part of 1975 wc as well but didn’t shine till 1990s.

And yeah BD has ups and downs but they don’t play to their strength at all.

Fielder caught it but his foot touched the rope. Given six.

BD - 64/5 (11.4 overs).

Need more sixes.

I was surprised to see Afghans losing 2-3 to Ireland recently. They are obviously better than Ireland.
