Afghanistan [286/2] cruise to a famous 8-wicket win over Pakistan [282/7] at ICC World Cup 2023

Afghan fans must be over the moon right now especially with reports of many of them having today's game marked in their calendar, their furious hate for Pakistan as a whole, and being short a couple runs being the only reason they could'nt achieve this sooner Vs Pakistan.

There was so many threads by passionate pak fans having high hopes...babar and co just killed it all...this lose will be very hard to digest and painful memory of this world cup

Well, we weren't gonna win the world cup anyways, better to be kicked out sooner, so change of captain and some young players...

Rahmat Shah scoring 77 off 84? :O

Threads and comments praising PAK phasht bowling should really be banned on PP.

That is the worst bowling performance I've seen in a long time .

Congrats Afghans
Is this the best bowling unit of the world??? I am wandering

This looks somewhat one-sided given that Pakistan was not in this game at any stage.

Look at the win probability graph. From Half point it never became red. 80% of t he time it was Afghanistan.

Total domination. The win prediction was 75 percent around half way in chase and never came back

I said at the beginning of the tournament - sooner or later they are going to get over the line vs Pakistan and I feared they would in this tournament

Couldn’t get a single wicket from 2 down …. FGS, I have predicted many lows of PAK cricket, but never saw this coming - AFGs chasing 280+ at Chennai under light with 2 down!!!!

Brilliant batting by Afg though...very methodical and oriented. Not sure if its Jonathan Trott effect but you normally associate teams like India or Australia pulling such clinical chases.

Do Babar a favour and just take the captaincy away from him. Rizwan/Shaheen/Shadab can be captain. Let Babar perform as a batsman.

Didn’t want to see this day but it was inevitable

PCB and the fans who supported this mediocrity deserve this

These are the consequences of destroying a upcoming and stable team led from the front by a true leader of men

Now we are being thrown into the plunges of darkness

Congratulations Afgan warriors for the historic victory. ShahidI has shown it how a true leader actually leads in crisis instead of hiding behind others. Gurbaz has once again demonstrated a pure masterclass of modern odi batting infront of so-called GOAT batters who are & always have been simply a bunch of selfish timid statpadding freeloaders.

It was always on the cards, bound to happen, only a matter of time. So doesn't shock me one bit.

I am not happy but feeling content as me (& many others around here) had already predicted this doom this disaster a long long time ago. The most overrated batsman in the recent history with his overhyped friends, bunch of stooges & court jesters were always on the verge of such humiliation. You can't put a donkey on charge & expect him to run like a stallion. That's essentially what PCB did.

It's a tragic day for Pak cricket, sure. But a much needed reality check for blind fanboys, the bubble had to burst, the aura of the fakest superstars & their lame awful grandfather era approach & cringeworthy antics had to fail on the biggest stage.

Looking at the reaction from Afghan players seems like they genuinely wanted to get this curse off their back. They showed collective intensity to bring Pakistan down.

The best bowling attack has been exposed. These many runs should have been just enough. Well done Afghan lads. Very enjoyable game of cricket and a really low point for Pakistan cricket.

What about pitch bro? People's were said here that it was a rank Turner

There ibrahim Zadran speaks good english and than there is our captain mumbling

At work,Just seen the result, unbelievable. Congratulations to Afghanistan. They are indeed giant killers now. Won it with such margin, by 8wickets!!! Batted superbly. Saw till 30th over.

Now I don't feel emotionally attached with this team,,,like used to when we had Shahid Afridi, Razzaq, etc....they are a bunch of selfish players that just want to make runs to keep place in team and dont show passion for country

Who else thinks that listening to Babar Post Match is akin to scratching your nails against a wall.

He also repeats what the presenter asks him like a parrot as his answer, thus giving zero insight

Looking at the scorecard seems like Ifti chacha saved the day for Pakistan in the end. What is with this 77, 80 strike rates at the top?

The only thing more delusional than our team is...us.

The only change made from the debacle of an Asia Cup was...Hassan Ali? LOL. Good Luck.

"Let's not boycott the World Cup. Let's go to India and win the World Cup and show them! Let our performances do the talking!" LOL x Infinity.

First time as a fan that I am actively rooting we finish at the bottom of the table. Even then, I think the only change that will be made in our next ODI series will be...Moh'd Wasim?

Absolute Clowns Top To Bottom.

Also, Irfan Pathan...could be the new Gambhir.

Absolutely biased, unprofessional, "fake" nationalist. Embarrassment On Air.

For my mental sanity, can ANYONE plzz explain to me, the reason behind giving overs to Usama and Shadab, whenever pacers created some sort of pressure during death overs? After there was some reverse and was time to create pressure….we kept pn going to spinners from the other end to release all pressure…Like please…anyone do me a favor and give some kind of logic/reasoning for this..especially the last over, Babar gave to Usama, i think 46th over…when we had enough overs of all pacers left…? Please anyone do me a favor and get me out of this..its important for my mental sanity

Pakistan hasn't been able to read the pitch and conditions throughout the world cup. In Chennai, first innings had something in it for the spinners. Ball is slows down a bit in the first innings. In the second innings, there was nothing in it for the spinners and ball just comes easily onto the bat. Batting first, they had to make use of the first opening spell of bowling to take wickets which they failed at. Shaheen unable to pick wickets, Hasan Ali isn't going to create much trouble for the batsmen, this isn't England. Rauf has been thoroughly exposed here.
Even Pak spinners were same style in Usama and Shadab, you need variation with finger spinners.

It seems Pakistan has been one step behind, and being reactive than being proactive.

Credit to Afghanistan esp closing down Pak in the last over and playing sensible cricket. Chasing 280+ is commendable on any track.

Learn something from 2019 ODI and the 2022 t20 WC

we will come back InshAllah and win the remaining 4 games and qualify for semis
Nope, this is done and dusted, you need leadership to do that. They all play for their stats so it's not happening.

This shameless ZimBabar again blamed their bowler, Are Behsram khud tuk tuk karke jaata aur hamesa bowler ko blame kbhi ye ni bolta me Ghatiya khela,

One explanation is apart from Hasan nobody else was actually reversing or not knowing how to reverse. But Hasan ali despite reverse you can still hit straight through the line as he is too slow. Couple of sixes against him proved that. Pakistan bowlers did not adapt very well. 287, Afghanistan would ahve defended fantastically on the same wicket.

These are all classic signs of a team devoid of leadership behind the scenes, under immense pressure and completely lacking confidence, self belief. Ultimately the team is paying the price for its complete lack of preparations for this WC in terms of players and researching on the venues where they were going to play.

Babar has achieved his goal then :babar The intention was to drive the fans crazy
On a serious note it is a reflection of his overall cricketing acumen and his attitude - he had probably thrown in the towel by then.

Congrats to Afghanistan on yet another famous comprehensive victory against another big team in this world cup.

Pakistani players (bowlers) have really hit the out of form button at the most crucial time and carrying out of form useless spinners like Shadab n Nawaz isn't going to win many games. This campaign is almost over, time to rethink and select team on merit in the future. Babar Azam needs to give up captaincy, despite world cup run he was never a thinking captain, it has taken a toll on his batting as well.

Team shouldn't give up yet and keep competing hard in this world cup. Not the end of the world, just another cup with Pakistan lackluster run

Tbh i can't blame the pacers too much, this was a placid wicket, they have been put under immense pressure due to the lack of impact from the spinners. These pacers will come into play when the spinners chip in with 2-3 wickets in the middle. Shadab and Usama Mir were just glorified net ballers.

Hasan Ali was reasonably within the stumps. But Shaheen bowled one full ball then back of the length, Then a short ball, then a wide ball. There was no consistent approach. They did not have to take any risks.

Babar really needs to be made to pay. Just stripping him off the captaincy but allowing him to play as a player is not going to cut it. He has abused his position as captain and the belief he is the best batsman in the team, his game has regressed badly, you can easily see that he is carrying a belly and his conversion rates have declined badly as well over the last year.

on a pitch where AFG spinners took 5 wickets, it is depressing to see Pakistani spinners take none and leak so many runs.. Its baffling how they did not develop one good full time spinner...

What about pitch bro? People's were said here that it was a rank Turner
It was , look at how Afg spinners bowl in this wicket vs Pakistan spinners( they simply cant pitch 6 balls on the right areas) Usama Mir and Shadab both bowl full tosses or over pitched or short pitched deliveries 80% of them...Simply atrocious bowling...

Keyword here is "sanity" - that should answer your question.

They played well but I don't understand why they hate Pakistan so much

Ibrahim Zadran in his interview said "I dedicate this trophy to the people of Afghanistan who saved themselves from Pakistan ane travelled back to Afghanistan". Like what on earth, you should be thankful they took them in in the first place.

So much hate for no reason

Aghanistan produced their second stunning win of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 to beat Pakistan for the first time ever in a men’s ODI, winning by eight wickets in Chennai.

Set a target of 283 to win, Afghanistan’s top three all hit half-centuries as they produced a high-quality run chase to reach the target with eight wickets in hand and an over to spare.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz set the tempo early with a 53-ball 65 alongside fellow opener Ibrahim Zadran (87), before the excellent Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi finished the job with crucial contributions of 77* and 48* respectively.

Pakistan would have been happy enough with a total of 282/7 after being put under big pressure by Afghanistan’s four-pronged spin attack, led by the impressive Noor Ahmad (3/49).

Some big hits from Iftikhar Ahmed (40 from 27) lifted Pakistan to a competitive score after Abdullah Shafique (58) and Babar Azam (74) had set the platform.

But the target proved not quite big enough, as Afghanistan pulled off the historic chase.

Match 22: Afghanistan beat Pakistan by eight wickets

Afghanistan’s dangerous openers let fly at the start of the chase, scoring 60 runs without loss in the opening powerplay to give the side the start they needed before spin could really play a part.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been a key presence at the top of the order throughout the tournament, and set the tone when he found the boundary off Shaheen Shah Afridi’s very first ball of the innings.

And it was Gurbaz who put Pakistan’s other high-profile pacer to the sword early on, hitting four fours in five balls off Haris Rauf in the eighth over to keep the momentum going.

Both Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran brought up fifties as Afghanistan’s openers took the attack to Pakistan’s spinners after seeing off the pace threat.

But Gurbaz’s onslaught came to an end when he took on the returning Shaheen Shah Afridi to depart for 65 from 53 balls, giving Pakistan the breakthrough that they desperately needed.

Rahmat Shah’s joined Ibrahim to negotiate the tricky middle overs, and the pair brought the required runs down to double figures with a handy partnership, setting up a big finish in Chennai.

But Pakistan kept the game very much alive when Hasan Ali removed key batter Zadran for 87 to set up a nail-biting finish.

Afghanistan’s batting efforts have heavily leaned on their young opening pair in recent times, but the experience of Rahmat and Hashmattulah Shah shone through as the pressure built in the back end of the innings.

With the required run rate always manageable at around a run-a-ball, Rahmat and Hashmattulah steered their team home in style, prompting jubilant scenes amongst the Afghanistan squad.

Earlier, Babar Azam won the toss and opted to bat first on a dry and seemingly spin-friendly Chennai surface. His opposite number, Hashmatullah Shahidi, said that he would've done the same given the conditions.

Shadab came in for an ill Mohammed Nawaz to give Pakistan a second leg-spin option along with Usama Mir. For Afghanistan, Noor Ahmad came into the team in place of Fazalhaq Farooqi, meaning all of Afghanistan’s four full-time spin options started the game.

Pakistan started well, with Abdullah Shafique leading the Pakistan charge and Imam-ul-Haq providing him good support in the first powerplay. Together they hit eight boundaries in the first ten overs, including Pakistan's first six in the opening powerplay of an ODI this year.

Afghanistan made their first breakthrough when Azmatullah Omarzai struck off the very first ball of the 11th over. A short delivery was mistimed by Imam (17) and pulled into the arms of Naveen-ul-Haq at mid-wicket.

Imam’s departure brought captain Babar to the crease, and he started in a positive fashion alongside Shafique.

The spin-heavy middle overs saw Afghanistan get control of the game, with the Pakistan batters finding it tough to read the variations of Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad, and the duo beating the bat on several occasions.

Shafique eventually fell to Noor for 58, going for a hasty sweep to try and up the rate and missing the ball, with the lbw decision given on review.

And Mohammad Rizwan also had difficulties in facing the excellent Noor, and fell after top-edging him to Mujeeb Ur Rahman at short fine leg for 8.

But captain Babar ensured that Pakistan got the platform that their tactics always sets out to build, putting together some handy partnerships with Saud Shakeel (25) and Shadab Khan (40).

And the lower order built on those foundations, with Iftikhar Ahmed’s brutal 40 causing the damage at the death.

Iftikhar, tasked with kicking on at the back end of the innings, slammed four maximums and departed for 40 from 27 balls in the final over of the innings.

Noor Ahmad finished with stand-out figures of 3/49, while Noor, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi all finished with economies under five-an-over having each completed their full allocation of ten overs.

And the impact of those spinners and how they kept Pakistan’s innings in check proved crucial in the final analysis.

The result leaves both teams on four points after five matches of the tournament, with both still in with a chance of reaching the semi-finals.

Pak fate is still 8n their own hands. Win all 4 games and they should be in sf. You just never know. This is almost like ipl with scramble for spots as all teams can upset anyone. So you never know. Maybe 5 wins will be ok who knows. Easiest way just forget this and focus on the next 4 and try to win all of them...
