Zimbabwe alter schedule for T20I and ODI series against Afghanistan

Zimbabwe Cricket has announced a rescheduling of its upcoming white-ball series against Afghanistan this December
Zimbabwe have altered the fixtures for the upcoming home series against Afghanistan, strategically shifting key matches to weekends to enhance fan access and atmosphere at the Harare Sports Club.

The changes affect both the T20I and ODI fixtures. The T20I series, originally slated for 9, 11, and 12 December, will now begin on Wednesday, 11 December. The second and third T20Is will take place on Friday, 13 December, and Saturday, 14 December, respectively.

Similarly, the first ODI is now scheduled for Tuesday, 17 December, with the second and third matches set for Thursday, 19 December, and Saturday, 21 December. These matches were initially planned for 15, 17 and 19 December.

Zimbabwe Cricket Managing Director Givemore Makoni emphasized the importance of these changes as key to driving fans to watch their country in action.

“We understand the passion our fans have for the game, and we want to give as many people as possible the chance to experience top-level cricket. Moving key matches to the weekend ensures better access for spectators, enhancing the atmosphere at Harare Sports Club.”

The Test series schedule remains intact, with Zimbabwe gearing up to host its first Boxing Day Test in 28 years – the last dating back to 1996 against England. This historic match will be followed by Zimbabwe's inaugural New Year’s Test, marking two significant milestones for Zimbabwe Cricket.

The Boxing Day Test will take place from 26-30 December at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. The second Test, Zimbabwe’s first-ever New Year’s fixture, is scheduled for 2-6 January, also at Queens Sports Club.

Meanwhile, the T20I and ODI series will be hosted at Harare Sports Club.

Revised schedule:

1st T20I - Wednesday, 11 December

2nd T20I - Friday, 13 December

3rd T20I - Saturday, 14 December

1st ODI - Tuesday, 17 December

2nd ODI - Thursday, 19 December

3rd ODI - Saturday, 21 December

1st Test - 26 December to 30 December

2nd Test - 2 January to 6 January

ACB Name Squads for the White-Ball Games against Zimbabwe

Afghanistan Cricket Board’s National Selection Committee today finalized the Afghanistan National Team’s Squads for the white-ball leg of the Zimbabwe tour which consists of three T20Is and as many ODIs, and are scheduled to be played from December 11 – 21 at the Harare Sports Club in Harare.

Promising young left-handed top-order batter Zubaid Akbari has earned his maiden call-up to the T20I squad. Akbari put on some stellar performances in the domestic season and was also a major contributor to AfghanAbdalyan's glory at the Emerging Asia Cup. Additionally, Darwish Rasooli returns to the T20I side after an impressive domestic season. He also led the AfghanAbdalyan lineup to their maiden title at the ACC Men’s T20 Emerging Asia Cup in Oman, earlier this year.

Afghanistan will continue to miss the services of prolific top-order batter Ibrahim Zadran, who is still recovering from the ankle surgery he recently underwent in England. However, there's good news for Afghan fans as frontline spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman has fully recovered from his right phalanx sprain, and has been added to the side for both the T20I and ODI series during the Zimbabwe tour.

ACB CEO Mr. Naseeb Khan: “The calendar year 2024 has been both busy and successful for the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and the AfghanAtalan lineup, with a packed schedule of home and away games and some remarkable achievements. As part of this action-packed year, the AfghanAtalan lineup will be touring Zimbabwe for a full and all-format series, which we eagerly anticipate and look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

He added: “AfghanAtalan have a rich history of playing in Zimbabwe over the years and have performed exceptionally well there. Playing against Zimbabwe on their home soil is always challenging and brings immense joy. I believe the group of players selected for this series will rise to the occasion and make this tour a memorable one.”

ACB Interim Chief Selector, Mr. Ahmad Shah, remarked, “It’s a great feeling to see our frontline spinner, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, recover from his injury and be available for selection. He is an essential member of our squad, and we hope he continues to shine brightly for Afghanistan. Additionally, Zubaid Akbari and Darwish Rasooli have been consistent performers, not only in domestic cricket but also in the recently concluded ACC Emerging Teams Cup, where Afghanistan claimed the title. We have included both players in the T20I squad and wish them the very best for the upcoming series.”

Meanwhile, the white-ball leg of the tour has also seen a slight shift and a change in dates to help the spectators attend the key games during weekends. As per the revised schedule of matches, the three T20Is, which were originally slotted to be played on December 9, 11 and 12, have now been pushed back to Wednesday, 11 December, Friday, 13 December, and Saturday, 14 November.

These adjustments have also affected the ODIs, with the first game now scheduled for Tuesday, 17 December. The second and third ODI match will follow on Thursday 19 December and Saturday, 21 December, respectively. All these matches will be played at the Harare Sports Club.

Zimbabwe Cricket has unveiled Zimbabwe’s squads for the upcoming white-ball series against Afghanistan, with left-handed batter Ben Curran and left-arm pacer Newman Nyamhuri receiving their maiden national team call-ups

The series will be played at Harare Sports Club, starting with three T20 Internationals (T20Is) on 11, 13 and 14 December, followed by three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) on 17, 19, and 21 December 2024.

Curran, 28, earns his place following stellar performances in domestic cricket.

He is the son of the late Kevin Curran, a former Zimbabwe international and coach, and also the brother of England internationals Tom and Sam Curran.

At just 18, Nyamhuri has been one of the country’s standout young talents, impressing earlier this year at the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa where he emerged as Zimbabwe’s leading wicket-taker with eight scalps.

The promising pacer has since drawn praise as a “future star” of Zimbabwean cricket.

Both Curran and Nyamhuri have been named in the ODI squad, which also welcomes back pace bowler Victor Nyauchi.

They replace Faraz Akram, Brandon Mavuta and Clive Madande, who is recovering from a dislocated shoulder.

The rest of the squad from Zimbabwe’s recent ODI series against Pakistan remains unchanged.

In the only changes to the T20I squad, Nyamhuri comes in alongside opening batter Takudzwanashe Kaitano, who is in line to make his debut in the shortest format.

Madande and Mavuta miss out due to injury and selection adjustments.

ZIMBABWE T20I SQUAD:

Sikandar Raza (captain), Faraz Akram, Brian Bennett, Ryan Burl, Trevor Gwandu, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Wessly Madhevere, Tinotenda Maposa, Tadiwanashe Marumani, Wellington Masakadza, Tashinga Musekiwa, Blessing Muzarabani, Dion Myers, Richard Ngarava, Newman Nyamhuri

Zimbabwe secured a dramatic four-wicket win over Afghanistan on the last ball of the opening T20I of their three-match series at the Harare Sports Club, chasing down a 145-run target in a thrilling encounter. This marked Zimbabwe's first win against Afghanistan since 2019, giving them a 1-0 lead in the series.

Zimbabwe looked in trouble at 128 for 7, needing 17 runs from the final two overs. But the ever-reliable Tashinga Musekiwa rose to the occasion, guiding the hosts through the tense final stages. He remained unbeaten on 16*, while Wellington Masakadza chipped in with an explosive 6* off 2 balls. The series opener came down to the wire with Azmatullah Omarzai bowling the final over. With 11 required from the final over, Tashinga Musekiwa sealed the win for Zimbabwe with the last-ball strike, securing a thrilling victory for the home side.

Afghanistan clinches T20I Series victory over Zimbabwe despite early stumbles

Afghanistan secured a hard-fought T20I series win over Zimbabwe in a tense third match. Chasing a modest target of 128, Afghanistan found themselves struggling at 45 for 4 after seven overs. The momentum seemed to be shifting in Zimbabwe's favor until Faraz Akram delivered a costly 11-ball over, including five wides, providing Afghanistan the breathing room they desperately needed.

Azmatullah Omarzai and Gulbadin Naib then stepped up, steadying the innings with a crucial fifth-wicket stand. Zimbabwe's bowlers managed to dismiss Omarzai, Naib, and Rashid Khan, leaving Afghanistan with seven runs to chase in the final over. However, Akram's first ball of the 20th over went for a boundary, and Mohammad Nabi sealed the game with three balls to spare.

Zimbabwe’s sloppiness in the field proved costly as they conceded 17 extras. This defeat marked their sixth consecutive bilateral T20I series loss to Afghanistan.

ACB Name Squad for the Two-Match Test Series against Zimbabwe

The Afghanistan Cricket Board's National Selection Committee has finalized the Afghanistan National Team's squad for the two-match test series against Zimbabwe, which is scheduled to be played from December 26 2024 to January 06 next year in Bulawayo.

Rashid Khan returns to the test squad, who has appeared in the format back in March 2021 against the same opposition in Abu Dhabi. Left-arm top-order batter Sediqullah Atal, who has already got ODI and T20I caps to his name, has been added to the test squad for the first time.

Ismat Alam, a young medium-fast bowling all-rounder, has been recalled to the test squad for the first time after an impressive performance in the Ahmad Shah Abdali First Class Competitions, where he scored 723 runs and took 12 wickets. Similarly, slow left-arm spinner Zahir Shehzad has also been added to the team after putting in some impressive performances in the domestic FC competitions. Bashir Ahmad Afghan, a promising left-arm fast bowler, is the third player who has been recalled for the first time after picking up 3o wickets at an impressive average of 17.36.

The squad comprises a total of seven uncapped players, which also includes the likes of fast-bowling all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai, left-arm fast-bowler Fareed Ahmad Malik, and top-order batter Riaz Hassan. They were recently part of the squad for the (washed out) test match against New Zealand but are yet to make their Test Debuts.

Ahmad Shah Sulimankhil, ACB’s interim chief selector: “Rashid Khan returns to the test squad, which is a promising sign for our red ball game going forward. The rest of the team underwent good preparations recently in Nangarhar province, which featured 19 players and all the support staff to work with the players and ensure full preparation for the series. We have thoroughly monitored the proceedings and have picked the squad which includes several new faces, including Ismat Alam, Bashir Ahmad, and Zahir Shehzad, who have performed well during the recent Ahmad Shah Abdali FC Tournament.”

Afghanistan Squad for the two-match test series against Zimbabwe: Hashmatullah Shahidi (C), Rahmat Shah (VC), Ikram Alikhail (WK), Afsar Zazai (WK), Riaz Hassan, Sediqullah Atal, Abdul Malik, Baheer Shah Mahboob, Ismat Alam, Azmatullah Omarzai, Zahir Khan, Zia Ur Rehman Akbar, Zahir Shehzad, Rashid Khan, Yamin Ahmadzai, Bashir Ahmad Afghan, Naveed Zadran, and Fareed Ahmad Malik.

Nasir Jamal, Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi, and Ibrahim Abdulrahimzai are the three players who are part of the reserve pool for the series.

This will be Afghanistan's 11th overall test match and third against Zimbabwe. Afghanistan has previously won three test matches each against Ireland (2019), Bangladesh (2019), and Zimbabwe (2021).

Etisalat Afghanistan Telecommunication Company retains the National Team’s sponsor for the tour.

Zimbabwe fined for slow over-rate in third T20I against Afghanistan

Zimbabwean players have been fined 10 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate in the third T20I against Afghanistan in Harare on Saturday.

Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Zimbabwe were ruled to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza pled guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Iknow Chabi and Forster Mutizwa, third umpire Percival Sizara and fourth umpire Langton Rusere laid the charge.
