#AintNoCinderella: Indian women mock politician who blamed stalking victim

720.jpg

Indian women have been posting images of themselves out after midnight with defiant messages after a male politician suggested a woman who was chased in her car by two men shouldn’t have been out “so late in the night”.

Varnika Kundu said she was chased and almost kidnapped by two men while driving home in Chandigarh after midnight on Saturday.

In a Facebook post she said her two stalkers chased her in their car for some kilometres before cutting her off and approaching her vehicle on foot, beating on its windows and trying to enter.

“They seemed to really be enjoying harassing a lone girl in the middle of the night, judging by how often their car swerved, just enough to scare me that it might hit me.”

Kundu said she felt lucky she was “not lying raped and murdered in a ditch somewhere”.

Ramveer Bhatti, the area vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP), said the incident would not have happened had Kundu not been out late.

“The girl should not have gone out at 12 in the night,” he said. “Why was she driving so late in the night? The atmosphere is not right. We need to take care of ourselves.”

The Times of India quoted Bhatti as saying: “Parents must take care of their children. They shouldn’t allow them to roam at night. Children should come home on time, why stay out at night?” he said.

His comments have sparked a strong response from women on Twitter, who have been posting pictures of themselves out after midnight under the hashtag #AintNoCinderella.

Speaking to NDTV, Kundu and her father rejected criticism of her decision to be out late at night alone.

Kundu said the comments were part of a “well-established tactic” designed to intimidate her into backing off: “I’m supposed to be wondering about what this is going to do to my image and my life. But what would those guys have done to my life if they had caught me?

“What I do and where I go and at what time I do it is my business.”

Modi's politicians again showing their dinosaur mentality. It must be despairing for Indian women knowing that these are supposed to be the people representing them to the world.

Poor Gandhi, this isn't what he died for.

Unfortunately when A butcher is in charge, and he's come into power on the backs of bigots, they feel empowered to show off their bigotry.

This attitude has nothing to do with any political party. Ministers and law makers have given similar statements before from all political parties.

Most religious preachers also tell women to stay home after sunset. Of course there are no rules for men. They can come home when ever they wish.

It's not Modi's politicians most of the politicians in India have the same mentality.. Some say it in public some don't but most of them have pretty crappy mindsets.. A lot of people here will argue with you and show problems in other countries to win the argument but the truth is India is still way too much in he past in mindset.. We still need 50 years to evolve the mindset of people..

Sigh this has nothing to do with who is in power, this mentality runs across the country not just in politicians.. All parties have people who have this mentality.. You are just showing your ignorance or bias here blaming Modi and calling him names.. For beef lynchings you can single handedly blame BJP but for this issue all parties and a majority of population is to be blamed..

From my impression Modi's party is similar to Taliban in that they seem to be quite regressive. All his fans talk about how he will move India forward in business, but those fans seem more quiet when we talk about social progress for women, homosexuals and minorities.

All Indian politicians are regressive. Modi and his supporters are ultra nationalistic who are bent on reviving the age old traditions and customs (Hindutva). No way close to Taliban.

If BJP is Taliban, all of the girls in the pictures will be hunted down and killed mercilessly.

There is a big tussle going on between the young generation who are more westernized and the old generation who cannot accept this change. Women are enjoying a lot more freedom and are competing with men everywhere. The older lot with backward mentality cannot digest this fact.

I have news for you, there are lots of girls who post on twitter in Pakistan, models and actresses too, they haven't been hunted down and killed as of yet. But the hyperbole may have served it's purpose to deflect from the topic which is of course the BJP, the politicians whom represent your people at the end of the day. I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that reviving age old traditions and customs (Hindutva) isn't likely to work well in women's favour.

Did I say anything about Pakistan?

Since you mentioned Pakistan, Can a normal Pak girl pose a picture like that and post it on Facebook or twitter and not expect abuse online?

Can an Afghan women pose a picture while sipping Vodka and expect to live another day?

In India a girl can pose like this without being attacked even online. Most of the people commenting have supported these girls. Its their life and they can do whatever they want.

So what you're saying is these girls are making a fuss about nothing? Is that your view?

oh bhai everything has nothing to do with modi. it wud have happened even if modi was not elected. its not modi govt point of views. its cultural thing. Many people have said these sort of things .

So what you're saying is these girls are making a fuss about nothing? Is that your view?

They are trying to change the mind set of old backward people. Letting them know that a women can do whatever they want. All of the youth is behind them. Regressive mind set people will always say stupid stuff. These pictures are to show a big middle finger to those people.

One of the two men who chased this girl is son of president of BJP Punjab. His partymen are just showing loyalty by blaming the victim. You are reading too much into it.

It's not me who wrote the article or published the tweets. This story appeared on British television news yesterday.

All i see in the article is women of the country standing against victim blaming which is too rampant in India. And then you using that opportunity to take potshots at BJP. All I am saying is you should have done your homework properly.

The victim shouldn't be blamed, however, it is a sound advice which every parent must give to their daughters. It sounds bad because a politician says it but if you just see the message, it is a sound one.

It's a BJP MP. What do you want me to do, give him a round of applause?

Looks like the tables might soon turn if BJP doesn't groom its MPs ,seems to be sprouting rubbish luckily for them Media still highlights the crap from Congress.

Pathetic statement, being an MP of ruling party in the country, needs to make the country better.

Got to say Taliban forcing education and taxes upon people is first I'm hearing of but nevertheless guess its Imran Khan's good Taliban.

If you are going to compare them to Taliban and back it up with examples like beef ban them I might agree with you. But using such articles to support your prejudiced theories is just ludicrous.

What a clown blaming women for his incompetence as a politician.

Lol all political parties in India are regressive mate you are just hearing about BJP.. You think SP, BSP, RJD, TMC etc really care about giving women empowerment?

This is not about political parties Indians in general have a pretty regressive mindset themselves which when called out we like to hide behind our "culture" "sanskars" being better than the rest of the world.. It will take time to change it.. Eventually people get used to it and stop caring about this till such an incident comes up and they post on social media to show their solidarity only to forget about it again after a couple of weeks till another incident comes up..

It's a never ending cycle even on PP you will find many threads on such topics..

Don't think a society can ever be crime free, but law enforcement and justice system can be improved. Till then it is a good idea if people take care of themselves. The girl was lucky that despite her risk of travelling alone, the cops were quick to respond and stopped what could have been worse. Not everyone is lucky.

Serious question not a trollignone and don't get offended.. Hypothetically god forbid if you were fighting for your life at night due to accident and were in an hospital your wife can't drive alone/take a cab at night to be at your side because as per you "women should take precautions by not travelling alone at night" because even after paying taxes all our lives one can't feel safe in his own country?

indeed but it's an incredibly poor choice of words from a seasoned politician.

It seems his solution is the numbers will go down if women stay at home. What a genius. :))

Maybe he could have said it better, but the core message is a valid one.

Even a female judge in UK, not affiliated to taliban or rss, suggested the same.
I don’t think it’s wrong for a judge to beg women to take actions to protect themselves. That must not put responsibility on them rather than the perpetrator. How I see it is burglars are out there and nobody says burglars are OK but we do say: ‘Please don’t leave your back door open at night, take steps to protect yourselves

The petunias would call it victim shaming, but you can see where she is coming from..sounds like a concerned parent warning her kids that it is a bad world out there.

Do you think it is safe to go out in a skirt or a burkha. Not talking about an ideal world which will never exist. Would you as a mother, warn your kids or just expect that others mind their own business just because you do?

What if somebody's kid get sick and there is nobody else to take him to the hospital or an emergency call for help from hospital come to a female doctor at night...what should they do???

I would definitely advice my kids about the evils in the society but this can't go long forever.....someday some change need to be there....

Do you seriously think rapes happen due to the clothes women wear? Please collect the data and see the amount of rapes committed against women in skirts which would probably be around 1-2% of the total rapes.. Most of the rapes are committed against minors, underprivileged girls, small children etc..

Clothes argument is very easy to give for politicians who can't provide you with security my friend but you should never buy it because no rape happens due to clothes of a woman.. If educated people like you fall for this argument then one can see why people call us rape capital of the world..

Do you really want me to answer this brain dead question?

People should lock there door for their own safety.
You: What if someone lost their lock, or have a broken door. what should they do?

crime happens when their is an opportunity and/or there is no fear of retribution. Not giving someone an opportunity to commit the crime is something everyone should do, while the authorities try to work out the rest.

Now spare me your moral outrage and join the bashing against the politician.

The problem is, stats show there's no such thing as staying safe.

1) 49% of rapes happen in broad daylight.
2) Women of all ages/races/body types are raped
3) Women in conservative countries are raped

So even if a woman is old, puts on a burka, and walks at 1 PM, she's not safe.

This is why the comments are ridiculous.

The problem is a 24/7 one and needs to be eradicated without putting the onus on victims. There will come a point where your neighborhood Fatima, Aliya, and Mariam will need to hide in a closet to stay safe.

You need politicians (or judges) who come down hard on these offenders. You have to build faith with current and future sexual assault victims so they do go to the police and trust the justice system.

A woman shouldn't feel like she can't get medicine for an ailing child because there's rapists lingering around in the neighborhood at night!

No moral outrage, you can have whatever opinion you want.. God forbid if something happens to your loved one then you will understand before that I don't see any hope for people like you who have this kind of view..

Can't argue with that. Well played.

While I appreciate your vision for the world, and what should be ideally..I don't believe it will ever be. How about we stop convincing each other. You feel free to trust the world, while I distrust it.

The people of this mentality come from all political parties.Abu Azmi,Mulayam Singh etc to name a few. This is idiocy.

Thanks for reminding me to call my wife. I have come to delhi and in a hotel right now, while she had gone out with her friends to a bar, to celebrate her exams getting over. She said she will reach home in about 30 mins. I will go to sleep after that.
