Alcohol bottles and drugs were reportedly found in Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) leader Sharjeel Memon’s hospital room during a surprise visit by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Saturday, Express News reported.

The chief justice visited three hospitals to check on imprisoned politicians, including Dr Ziauddin Hospital where Memon is under treatment. Justice Nisar met the PPP leader briefly and personally photographed alcohol bottles and drugs.

After the visit, Memon’s room at Ziauddin Hospital was sealed and he was shifted back to jail.

The provincial minister is accused of embezzling around Rs6 billion while heading the provincial information department.

After Ziauddin, Justice Nisar visited Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) where Hussain Lawai and Anwar Majeed, accused in the money laundering case, are admitted. He observed various items in Majeed’s room and confiscated a few records.

Justice Nisar then reached the apex court’s Karachi registry and met Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Anwar Mansoor. During his meeting with the AGP, the chief justice discussed his hospital visits and asked Mansoor to note of items found in Memon’s room.

“We found alcohol bottles in his room. When he was questioned, Memon said they were not his,” the CJP told the AGP.

Should the Chief Justice really be doing this? I don't think if it is part of his job description.

Perhaps he should also do a raid on the GHQ. The drinking culture within the military elite of Pakistan is an open secret.

However, that is not going to happen because he gets his orders from there. If he questions the generals and the brigadiers like he questioned Sharjeel Memon, he will be sitting at home.

That is the problem in Pakistan. The accountability is selective, and it all depends on vested interests, favors to repay and scores to settle.

Mamoon Isn't military bashing getting a bit too boring, try to find a brand new excuse to bash Pakistan and its systems.

Does that put Sharjeel Mamon in the right? Off course not!

This was not about the drinking  nice try of deflecting from the actual point of criminals acting sick to get out of jail and then enjoying themselves in the hospital.

The thing is that you can’t put all the crooks behind bars at once. So in theory, the accountability process is selective by default.

I agree, but some crooks will never be put behind bars for reasons that are known to all of us. Accountability has been applied selectively throughout our history.

I think we should give it some time. It’s a mess that has been pilling up for the last 71 years. Meanwhile, we will have to make sure that democracy is not overthrown by the dictatorship. Because once the democracy is strengthened we will ultimately weed out the political characters who took favours from the army and have morally stronger politicians who would be able to prosecute the crimes of the army.

This is a normal thing in jails especially for so called VIPs to have alcohol and drugs supplied to them.

He was drinking in the gham of Bhutto

Cannot agree more. But our jahil awam love vigilantiasim, fascism and judicial dictatorship. CJP is worse than every politician cause at least media can criticize them unlike him, or he will call them to court for tauheen - e - adalat and ridicule them as if he is the schools principal and they his pupils. What a joke. Our country is truly a banana republic.

KARACHI: An investigation team was formed on Sunday to probe the discovery of liquor bottles from the room of a hospital where Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sharjeel Inam Memon was under treatment.

A day earlier, the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Mian Saqib Nisar paid a surprise visit to the hospital in Karachi's Clifton vicinity. During his visit, the top judge discovered alcohol bottles, drugs, and cigarettes in Memon's room.

In a notification issued earlier today, Additional IG Karachi Dr Amir Shaikh nominated DIG South Javaid Alam Odho as the head of the probe committee. SSP Investigation South Abdullah Jan and SSP Investigation East Shabir Memon are also part of the team.

In the First Information Report (FIR) — lodged 11 hours after the alcohol bottles were discovered — Memon along with the police officers on duty at the hospital was given a clean chit in the case.

Charges were, however, levelled against Shakar Din, Muhammad Jam, and Muhammad Mushtaq. The three men were sent to jail on a 14-day judicial remand. Assistant Superintendent Jail Mujahid Khan, who was the officer-on-duty during Justice Nisar's surprise visit to the hospital, was made party to the case.

Bottles of alcohol contained oil, honey, says man arrested from Sharjeel Memon's room

Following the raid and examination, Memon was shifted to Central Prison Karachi. His blood samples were also taken, while the room was sealed.

While speaking to the media on the same day, SSP South Police Omar Shahid Hamid said a lab test will be conducted of the alcohol bottles found from Memon’s room.

“If a facility is declared a sub-jail then its responsibility lies with the police, however, an inquiry will also be conducted against hospital administration,” said SSP Hamid.

The two bottles recovered from incarcerated PPP leader Sharjeel Inam Memon's room in Karachi's Ziauddin Hospital contained honey and oil, according to a chemical examination report made public on Monday.

On Saturday, Chief Justice Saqib Nisar had conducted a ‘raid’ on a room of Dr Ziauddin Hospital in Clifton, which was declared a sub-jail by provincial authorities, where Memon was staying, and reportedly found "liquor" there.

Soon after the bottles were confiscated, the PPP leadership had insisted that the bottles did not contain alcohol but honey and olive oil.

The chemical report signed by Director of Laboratories and Chemical Examiner to the Government of Sindh Dr Zahid Hasan Ansari confirmed that one bottle contained honey while the other contained olive oil.

Meanwhile, it appeared that Memon's blood also did not contain any traces of alcohol, DawnNewsTV said while quoting the test report.

The blood samples were taken at Ziauddin Hospital on Saturday and the report from Aga Khan Hospital is dated Sunday.

Memon had been under treatment and in judicial custody at the Ziauddin Hospital's Shirin Jinnah branch, where his room had been declared a sub-jail.

He was parcelled off to Karachi's Central Jail soon after the alleged discovery of liquor bottles in his room, as police and hospital authorities scrambled to save face.

After the CJP's 'raid', the Sindh chief secretary and DIG Prisons Aftab Pathan reached Ziauddin Hospital in an effort to "record evidence and take action".

According to Dawn's earlier report, the blood and urine samples of Memon were obtained by the jail authorities and sent to two private hospitals for examination.

Later that day, police claimed to have booked Muhammad Jam, Mushtaq Ali and Shakar Din, who are said to be Memon's employees, in connection with the presence of liquor at the hospital.

On Sunday, the three men were remanded in judicial custody by the concerned judicial magistrate.

However, on Monday the judicial magistrate directed the jail superintendent to release them if their custody was not required in any other case.

Probe team looking for 'foul play'
Meanwhile, a special team formed by Karachi AIG Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh and led by DIG South Javed Alam Odho is conducting an investigation into the liquor case against Sharjeel Memon.

An official privy to the matter said that if any foul play or manipulation is detected, the investigation team may take new blood samples from Sharjeel and send them for third-party verification.

The source also said that the whole episode occurred inside the sub-jail and the jail authorities are responsible for whatever happened within their premises.

Who is behind fake media trial? asks Memon's son
Speaking to the media after his father's blood test report was released, Rawal Sharjeel Memon said that while the allegations against his father have been proven wrong, the question is "who is responsible for the fake media trial and character assassination of Sharjeel Memon?"

"All allegations have been proven wrong after the official medical report was released earlier this afternoon,” Rawal said.

"The blood test is able to catch traces of alcohol consumed even 40 days ago," he claimed.

The Sindh establishment saving their own.

CJP is worse than every politician cause at least media can criticize them unlike him, or he will call them to court for tauheen - e - adalat and ridicule them as if he is the schools principal and they his pupils. What a joke. Our country is truly a banana republic.

What CJP should do is make a special court for suo-moto actions. The judges in that court can visit different public places to examine their conditions and hold the government accountable. Right now, every second he spent outside the court is causing a lot of delay to the cases already pending in the SC.

You do realize that the CJP is more of a manager of other judges in the SC and he himself only listens to cases of utmost importance such as those that involve heads of state etc.

Also it is within CJP's job description to visit any public space that is not functioning as instructed by the constitution, for example a hospital, those crying democracy democracy are actually the ones who have no idea what they are talking about.

And your idea of fixing this banana republic is by voting for a son of a wadera who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, a la, Billoo Rani.

Please don't give us lectures if you support these kind of people.

Pakistan is a banana republic because the bad ones are being rounded up....

Pakistan is not a banana republic when the bad ones are put in charge without any oversight or accountability

No, he should declare himself Khalifa and take over the reins of this country.

Was IK not born in privilege, went to Aitchison and then Oxford, married a heiress and lives on a palatial estate. You could criticize Bilawal on many fronts but him being born in the Bhutto/Zardari family should be the last reason.

Vote is every citizens right and whoever they elect should be respected unlike CJP, who instead of sticking to his supposed job, thinks of himself as some superhero or modern-day Kahliafa, wielding his sword of justice as if the whole country is beholden to him.

We know who changed samples of bottles found from Memon's room: CJP

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar on Tuesday said he knows fully well under whose supervision samples were changed of alcohol bottles seized from Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sharjeel Memon’s hospital room.

The chief justice's remarks came as he heard cases at the Supreme Court.

During the hearing, Sindh chief secretary noted that a report on the contents of the bottles seemed 'suspicious'.

"It seems that the report has been tampered with," the Sindh chief secretary said while adding that CCTV footage is available of the hospital and Memon's room which had been declared sub-jail.

"We will submit a report after looking into the matter," he said.

To this, Justice Nisar said, "I had not called for an examination of the contents of the bottles found from Memon's room."

The chief justice further said that he "saw no bottle of honey" in the former Sindh information minister's room.

He continued, "Memon never denied that there was alcohol in the bottles, he just said there were not his."

"In Sindh, all politicians fall ill and get shifted from the jail to a hospital," the CJP remarked.

Further, during the hearing of another case, the CJP also spoke about his surprise visit to Memon's hospital room and said, “There has been a hue and cry over my visit.”

“Just go and visit that room it is like a presidential suite,” he added.

Justice Nisar further clarified, “I had not intended to seize alcohol and if I wanted to conduct an inquiry, I would have sent the samples for testing myself and would have gotten the suspects arrested then.”

“We know fully well who changed the samples,” he added.

Further, during the hearing of a third case, the CJP also spoke about his visit to the PPP leader's room.

"I had heard that there is a presidential suite at Ziauddin Hospital where a top politician has been admitted," the chief justice said.

"After my visit, honey and oil emerged from the bottles," Justice Nisar remarked.

The chief justice further said, "We are not ones to run away and know how to get people to adhere to our decisions."

Justice Nisar on Saturday made a surprise visit to rooms of political prisoners in three hospitals in Karachi, including Memon's hospital room.

During the CJP's visit, three bottles were found from the PPP leader's room and were sent for testing.

However, on Monday a test report by Chief Chemical Examiner, Dr Zahid Ansari, revealed that the bottles did not contain alcohol.

According to the report, one of the bottles contained honey and the other cooking oil.

Further, a test report revealed that no trace of alcohol was found in the blood samples of Memon.

Memon’s blood samples were sent to two hospitals for testing. The blood samples did not contain traces of plasma alcohol and ethanol, the report stated.

As far as Ik`s privilege goes, did it give him the right to lead a political party?
You are supporter of the corrupt and thuggish mafia called the PPP, and your knowledge of the law is on par with the AZ`s honesty because the constitution does give him the right and i would always take the CJP over any PPP member or supporter. if his acts are constitution then file a complaint.

Looks like CJP suspected something like this would happen and PPP fell for it hook, line and sinker! This is the CJP you're dealing with, not your jahil zinda laashein, he's not gonna believe that you put honey in a whiskey bottle :)))

This episode highlights why the PPP and PML-N need to purged from Pak society, for far too long these parties have treated Pakistani Institutions like Baap ka maal.

I still feel sick to my stomach that Sindh re-elected PPP for yet another 5 year term when it is blatantly clear how much loot maar they have indulged in the last 10 years

Lol, he has already ordered that Sharjeel Memon and his trial be shifted from Punjab. He has ordered police staff, hospital staff at Ziauddin, AKU e.t.c to be arrested with immediate effect.

Last sentence should say if his acts are unconstitutional

CJP seems obsessed with the liquor bottles, remarking on the incident during hearings of two separate unrelated cases in the Supreme Court today.

"I don't drink alcohol myself, but it makes no difference to me if someone else does so," the top judge said. "It seems as though honey and oil were recovered from the bottles after my visit."

Sharjeel Memon must have done a million worse things in his life. He is implicated in cases much more relevant to laws and systems of Pakistan but CJP seems obsessed and intent on stopping his liquor consumption while in jail. Lol, talk about twisted priorities.

I think your reading of this case is as empty as the PPP morals. This is a case about the abuse of power by the PPP and its attempt to run a parallel state for its own mafia. Everytime a crook from the PPP is caught he is always falls ill before he ever sees a prison cell, from AZ mental illness to Dr Asims heart problems to Sharjeel Memons health travails. Where i do agree with the PPP is that things like the NRO means nothing is seen to the end.

Abuse of power would be questioning why he is even in the hospital not why is he is being served liquor in the hospital. But since alcohol consumptions and possession is such a juicy and loaded topic for the mora police, this is what is being highlighted by them and not the former.

Let's move the setting to the USA or Europe, politician in jail complains of illness, moved to hospital. During a routine inspection it's found this politician has bottles of alchohol in his room... is this a moral or a criminal matter? I'd say criminal. As it is in this case.

Jesus turned water to wine, he's managed to turn whiskey to honey.

I agree with part of your 1st sentence but its also the fact that a law maker who is in the upper echelons of the 3rd largest party breaks a law with such impunity and with the help of the law enforcement agencies in Sindh. In whose interest is Sindh being run by the PPP, and let me give you a small hint- its not in the interest of the poor buggers that voted for them. As i have said repeatedly the PPP under AZ and before that under BB is a disgrace, its a mafia to steal from the poor using Sindhi nationalism as a guise for blatant theft.
Rather than Billo making speeches like a young Tory MP in the UK, he should take control of the PPP and make some effort to do something for those poor people that have put so much in his family.

Routine inspection by the CJ of SC of that country???

Tell me in which country does the CJ conducts routine inspections of hospital rooms occupied by prisoners.

I agree. Bilawal should take control of the PPP but when and how. It’s not easy to wring power out of the hands of people who have been so used to it for so long. It’s like the movie Godfather. Michael can’t just take control of the mafia and run it his own way, he needs an inciting event...AZ has to go, his sister Faryal has to go. Then Bilawal would need to do some cleaning of his own. The biggest question is will Bilawal ever get that opportunity and if so when and on getting complete power of the party, what reforms will he inact. Before that, I would like to give young Bilawal the benefit of the doubt.

No normal country would allow PPP to rule.

The fact that CJ himself had to expose them should tell you how broken the system they have made it, to suite their criminality.

Why should Bilawal inherit the throne?

Will he return the stolen money?

What is normal in politics. US electing Trump, is that normal?

People do vote for PPP after all and the fact that their vote bank has been shrinking steadily over the years shows that people are getting tired and fed up with them.

Why should Bilawal inherit the throne?

Will he return the stolen money?

Dynastic politics has been part of the sub-continent. Its not ideal and we should move away from it but for now that is the way it is. In case of Bilawal, from his conduct, speeches and overall political acumen, he has already shown more maturity, courage and elegance than any seasoned politicians currently on the scene. I feel he has earned his spot. Also, if he has stolen any money he should return it, from what I can tell, he himself has not stolen any money.

Dynastic politics is normal in the sub continent, but then again so is a CJ doing the job a prison inspector or the police should be doing.

Admit it, Pi Pi Pi got caught drinking from under the bar and the CJ is gonna clean the mess the alcoholics have created with their lack of governance and accountability so these kind of things won't be normal in the subcontinent

It appears that the most important issue for the CJ is alcohol found on Sharjeel Memon. In fact, it overshadowed the presidential elections.

Some time back, he was very vocal on the issue of Musharraf refusing to come back to Pakistan.

He was told that his passport had been cancelled which meant that he was staying in Dubai illegally.

All the CJ did was to give him his passport back so he could stay there.

I must admit that I liked your Pi Pi Pi better than the other version, Pee Pee Pee, lol

So does it make it fine if he hasn't stolen it himself? He is not some 17 year old kid who should live on ill gotten wealth, he have attain good education use it to find a job or start a business and donate all of the ill gotten wealth to Edhi that he has inherited.

Fitted in better since it involves drinking. I'm glad somebody noticed, kept returning to the thread hoping someone would notice my attempt at wordplay yet nobody paid a blind bit of notice.

But doesn't look good for PPP at the moment, how could they be so lax knowing the CJP is sniffing around

Some 23rd century forensics here, folks. Don't know whether to laugh at the pure ineptness in which they are conducting the laboratory test or the great lengths they are going to persue this

Billo has done nothing and achieved nothing in his life and due to an accident of birth he has great influence over the fate of over millions of poor Sindhis. I hate the whole Zardari-Bhutto dynasty but as a realist, i know that they are going nowhere fast. So with that in mind i am hoping that this Oxford educated graduate may have a conscience and will do something that his family has miserably failed to do and care for the poor buggers that voted for them. But the chances are that Billo lacks the balls to tell his father, auntie and the rest of the PPP in Sindh to get lost so that he could actually do something.

Sharjeel’s DNA samples may be taken, says IG

KARACHI: Inspector General (IG) of Sindh Police Amjid Jawaid Saleemi has hinted that police investigators may take DNA samples of provincial lawmaker Sharjeel Inam Memon in the liquor case.

He was talking to the media at a medical camp set up by the South police at Reti Lane in connection with Defence Day on Thursday.

When asked about the progress made so far in the case, the provincial police chief said investigation was going on. “No final comments can be made at this stage,” he said.

On the question about sending DNA and blood samples to a laboratory in Islamabad, the IG replied that all required steps would be followed.

Given the context here Pee Pee Pee, also works first in its Urdu meaning and then in it's English meaning.

KARACHI: Following the decision of the Supreme Court, an accountability court in Karachi on Wednesday reopened a graft case of Rs5.75 billion against Pakistan People’s Party leader Sharjeel Memon.

The former Sindh minister along with other accused in the case reached the accountability court to challenge the ambit of the court.

After SC’s verdict in the NAB Amendment case, the ambit of the court cannot be challenged and the trial of the case will resume from where it was left, the court said.

Accountability court after summoning the witnesses and the accused in the case on the next hearing, adjourned the further proceedings until October 5.

PPP leader Sharjeel Memon and 16 others have been charged with misappropriating advertisement funds of the information department to the tune of Rs5.76 billion.

NAB had filed a reference against them in 2016 over involvement in alleged irregularities in awarding contracts to different newspapers and channels for running public interest advertisements and others.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan struck down amendments made to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) laws as it announced its reserved verdict on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman’s plea.
