KARACHI: Former captain and wicket-keeper Moin Khan on Friday put his weight behind Pakistan’s embattled skipper Sarfraz Ahmed and called on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to give him a longer run as leader until the 2019 World Cup.

Talking to Dawn on Friday, Moin said: “Sarfraz is someone who leads from the front and gives his hundred percent for his country on the field. He was the unanimous choice of fans and critics across Pakistan to lead the team in all the three formats last year and should be given all the backing now so that he could lead with confidence and build up a competitive team for the next year’s World Cup in England.”

Moin, who is known to have mentored Sarfraz during his career and the duo enjoy fabulous camaraderie as captain and coach of the PSL outfit Quetta Gladi*ators, said this is not the time to criticise Sarfraz but support him.

“It is sad to see some people in the media and a few ex-players needlessly going after Sarfraz,” said Moin. “Yes Pakistan lost the ODIs in New Zealand 5-0 because conditions there were very tough and our top order batting just could not click. But the manner in which Pakistan bounced back to win the T20 series speaks of the determined individual that Sarfraz really is and the never-say-die approach that he has instilled among the boys.”

“It was this very approach of Sarfraz, that people are finding faults in, which won us the high-profile Cham*pions Trophy in England last June where again the team bounced back after a heavy defeat against India,” recalled Moin.

“Wins and defeats are part and parcel of the game and every captain and every team experiences that. Look at India which had won so many Tests on their home soil in 2017 but lost 2-1 in South Africa. But is anyone calling for Virat Kohli’s head?

“I strongly feel that the PCB should give Sarfraz a longer run as skipper to bring the best out of him. And, of course, a similar backing for the skipper is required from coach Mickey Arthur and chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq,” he said.

Moin, a brilliant, aggressive cricketer during his playing days, who now runs perhaps the most efficient of cricket academies in Karachi in DHA went on to add: “I admire Sarfraz for his aggressive style of leadership and the fighting qualities that could take Pakistan to new heights.

“All those players who have played with him and the officials who have remained closely associated with him know very well that Sarfraz just hates to lose and this is why he is so animated and vocal on the field. But he is not one to keep any grudges and enjoys complete support of his teammates.”

“All this talk of some players going against him is a load of crap. The PCB will do well to silence all such detractors by firmly putting its weight behind Sarfraz by naming him leader till the World Cup,” concluded Moin.

i Wish our current and ex-players would rather accept they played poorly when they lose. All this nonsense about conditions being tough shows such a poverty of ambition. Conditions were different but we played poorly and lost. As for Sarfaraz being captain : he has to play odi and t20 at number 4 and tests at number 6.

I wish ex players would criticize objectively.

There is no one except Sarfaraz who is capable of leading the team, maybe in next 4-5 years Shadab and Hassan Ali are candidates for captaincy but he is only player capable of leading this team and bringing Glory

But we are led to believe that since Hasan glared at him after taking a wicket, there are problems in the dressing room. :(

Politics, media and greed play a big role in Pakistan cricket. Certain media backs certain players and creates fake rumors in favor of those players. Media standards are low is Pakistan but the sad reality is that PCB comes under pressure from politics and media which needs to decisions in favor of certain players rather than what is best for Pakistan cricket.

Ever since taking of the captaincy Sarfraz is done a good job and he needs to be backed. Any players that tries to interfere in teams stability should be dealt with harshly and made an example of for others to see.

4/5 years is a long time in Pakistan cricket. You can have at least three changes of captaincy in that period

Did he actually say a load of crap in English, and if it was translated from Urdu what they did he say exactly as I am always interested in knowing the Urdu equivalent of English idioms.

He selected his son into his PSL team so can’t really blame him for supporting Sarfu.

Long-term captaincy for Sarfraz will pre-empt dressing-room conflict: Moin Khan

Legendary wicketkeeper Moin Khan on Thursday urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to give an extended tenure to current national team captain Sarfraz Ahmed in order to pre-empt potential dressing-room conflicts.

The history of Pakistan cricket is littered with internal strife between rival cliques — the highlight of which was the infamous Waqar Younis-led mutiny against then captain Wasim Akram during the 1990s.

Such conflicts, however, have diminished during the last decade, partly to make way for bigger vice such as spot-fixing but also due to the calming influence of Misbahul Haq.

It, however, reared its head again during the recent tour of New Zealand when fast-bowler Hasan Ali, when criticised for some wayward bowling by Sarfraz, stared back at the skipper in an act of apparent dissent.

During the same tour there were also reports of some senior players not getting along with Sarfraz as well as coach Mickey Arthur.

Moin Khan, the head coach of Quetta Gladiators, discussed the issue on Thursday, asking the PCB to help command Sarfraz more respect in the dressing room by extending his captaincy until at least the 2019 World Cup.

"Pakistan cricket needs a long-term captain," he reiterated a point he has stressed before. "With long-term stability the team does not fall prey to such problems.

"The board needs to extends his captaincy for at least two more years."

Moin also explained the logic behind his recommendation for extension, saying: "When the boys know that this is their captain for the long haul, such problems don't occur."

have you ever wondered how a certain media channel and its journalists are the first one to get the inside info regarding team matter? There is immense influence because these guys run propaganda for most of these players to be brought in to the team or to be made captain and once they are successful, those players have no other options but to make them happy by giving interviews, inside info like the team XI etc. I was watching sports show on a certain propaganda channel and the journalist admitted he talked directly with Sarfraz on the phone regarding some team issues. This propaganda and influence of this media house runs deep and they are never shy to blackmail players like they did Shoaib Malik 10 years ago.

Sarfraz is the best available option for captain atm.But as a player he needs to improve. He has regressed as a batsman in the last 2 years.
