Are Abdullah Shafique and Saim Ayub the worst opening batting pair Pakistan has ever produced?

So far the duo is doing great against Zimbabwe in the 2nd ODI, made 36 so far in 5.4 overs.

consistency is the real problem with both the players... we cant rely on them playing against stronger teams

Still have my doubts on both of them and don’t think it will work against stronger sides than Zimbabwe and not low totals. Though I think both have talent and this will be our international opening partnership in the future. Just not sure they are ready yet.

Think fakhar coming back and Babar slotting in at three again will make this team a lot stronger.

Also would add though I don’t think we should do it, but I think Saud if he opened would do better than those two right now. But of course Saud is more of a finished product and considerably older. The other two have probably more potential.

Abdullah is mentally very weak and anxious player to be playing International cricket , one bad patch and he will be a goner for sure. Even though he is a good talented batter and can play all sorts of shots but is extremely timid and lack confidence to actually pull them off.

Saud should be a no 4 in odi. He's the best player of spin in pakistan and you want to utilise him in the middle.

Fakhar + Saim should open for aggressive starts.

As for saim, I wouldn't worry too much, when he first appeared in domestics he struggled for months before finding rhythm and dominating.

Then when he came into leagues, Same story and same story for international.

Takes him time to adjust to different levels. He's no jaiswal but he can probably he a rachin ravindra in the future who knows.

I think he should play at 4 too. That’s why I said I don’t think we should make him open. I think it was a massive mistake to drop him from odi team so early. Even though I don’t think he’s been fantastic there, with that sort of record you can’t argue that, but he showed massive amounts of potential and pretty much threw his wicket nearly every time after he got a start, he looked more comfortable early on in the crease than most of our other batsmen.

Just think he if happened to open he would outperform Saim or Abdullah. I think he looks better at the crease early on, is comfortable and is used to piling in runs in domestic and tests. Though I think we shouldn’t do it as saud can and probably should play middle order. And I believe Saim and Abdullah are the future so it’s really great for Pakistan if either or both can cement their place on merit.

Saim ayub hit a 53 ball 100. Yes it was againat Zimbabwe however he's clearly improving as a batsmen, he replicated his good form againat Australia as well scoring 82 and 44 in their home den which is impressive.

One of those 80+ scores came against the likes of hazlewood, Cummins, Stark, zampa etc.

He has failed alot but how many pakistani openers have showcased the ability to provide good scores at an aggressive pace and that too at the age of 22? Further more saim is an all format opener. He and fakhar shouldn't be replaced under any circumstances.

Saud cannot hit 53 ball 100's. But he is a solid utility player and a perfect no 4. He's also pakistan's best test batsmen atm.

These 2 haven't had anything to show before that 2nd ODI. Today, they are looking good again. Should make their record better.

This partnership just needed the Zimbabwe tour to get the kick-start it needed

another day, another failure for the Shafique - Saim opening partnership
Abullah out for a duck, again, showing his vulnerabilities to left arm swing bowling

What is the future of Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique's partnership, as Abdullah Shafique completes a hat-trick of ducks in the ODI series against South Africa?

Shafique is basically a free wicket now.

Even at his best he bats too slowly, but at his worst it's like opening with a tailender.

Not only do they have to bring back Fakhar, but they should add a new backup too. There's no value in having Shafique in the CT squad.

The future of Abdullah Shafique is he is developing a prolific poultry farm. His namesake Asad would be proud of him. The farming community are the main beneficaries
