Are we going to witness another Protea choke

62 for 3

Funnily enough 62-3 is seen as a respectable score when Pakistan makes it :)))

Let's hold the horses :ashwin

I thought choke meant losing a match from an easy winning position.... Has the definition changed lately?

Nope! need to score more than 220 I don't see Pakistan chasing that score!

Choke, to lose from a winning position.

South Africa have just played bad so far, 81-3.

Stop with this choke nonsense stop jinxing pakistan.A random group match is not big enough for a choke.

Getting overexcited here.

With Morris, Duminy, Parnell to come, they can easily get to 250 and that'll be enough to wilt Pakistan down with their bowling.

By the way guys...Saffers have yet to complete their innings and more importantly Pakistan have yet to chase...lol

Let's wait patiently...

Body language is horrible. Going to lose this game for sure. My 70 pounds is hanging. Chokers

its definately a choke , if SA cant get to 200 . Most teams make a comeback from 60/3 to get to a 280+ total these days , but SA can crumble badly under pressure . its a bit of a choke imo

Can Kagiso bat? If not, Saffers have a long tail...

Seems its more ineptitude against spin than choking. And anyway its not a knockout match.

Pakistanis have come to play today. They were under too much pressure in the game against India. The bowlers have been bowling in good areas and keeping it tight. Pitch has slowed down and spinners seem to be getting some assistance.

I would still put my money on South Africa, last time we played them at this venue we failed to chase 230 odd and collapsed for 160 odd.

You can't start calling every poor show as choke. There is no choke in the situation you are describing.

They are wilting under pressure. What's the point in being number 1 when you are Shtscared playing against decent bowling attack. Don't expect people to give you respect when you can only win JAMODIs.

I wasn't calling anyone to give respect or anything like that, but every single team will fail time to time. Choke is losing a game from winning position due to pressure. Otherwise every time anyone fails, we can start calling it a choke.

Saffers are the most overrated team in the world, they can keep winning meaningless jamodis and bilaterals but chokers like amla and devillers have no place in my team, I thought de kock would be different but apparently even he's from the same breed of chokers, they might still win this match but if saffers fail to reach final of this tourney despite being no. 1 team in the world then they don't deserve to be rated the best odi side

Dude do you know your team was 2/7 BIG favourite to win this game. Playing against no 8 team. Your team had everything to lose, which is why a lot pressure on your shoulder. How they are handling the pressure? Horribly. I am in the stadium, their body language is so poor. More like how pak was against India. No way this team is playing like no 1. Choking under pressure big time.

I would love to see Fakhar smashing TahirFan for some sixes and get his 50 (38)

If you get South Africa's top four out cheaply than you almost certain to beat them

The top 4 choked. Pakistan get get the required runs by playing their usual tuk tuk way

The #1 contender of the tournament lost to arguably the weakest team of the tournament.

2023 World Cup has been introduced to The Great Southern Afrikaana choke

It would be almost impossible for any team to stay unbeaten in the tournament so it is better to lose a game before the knockouts.

Miller is batting superbly. He has done better than Buttler and Pandya in ODI World Cups.

Chokers be Chockers nothing new.

Atleast we will have a competitive final with Aus and Ind with Aus being mentally much tougher than India while being less in talent compared to India.

They choked once again and it was once again Australia who knocked them out of the World Cup in a semi-final. David Miller innings did provide them some help and their spinners also performed really well but they were never in the game after the kind of start Australian openers provided in the modest run-chase.

Think people are throwing the word choke around senselessly these days.

Choke is when you are in a favorable position and throw it all away.

When was SA in a favorable position this whole game? They were always playing catch up.

If anything Australia almost choked chasing a less than modest total of 212, just like they nearly choked Vs Afghanistan and needed an arguably GOAT ODI innings Tom Cruise rescue mission style.

Let us say both choked. SA prevailed. For SA the definition of choking is larger. Sheer presence in the knockout scenario make them do unusual, funny things. Same Dekock thrashed Australians in the league stage. Here they were 10/2 in 8 overs.

South Africa choked not once but twice (once against Netherlands and then against Aussies).

I expect them to choke again next year. Something seems psychologically wrong with them when it comes to crunch games.

would like to see the headlines of SA leading papers about what happened yesterday

But again that’s not choking, pitch was tough, we saw from both teams. It was a day 5 pitch.

230-240 was a match winning score here.

Choking would be if SA were 100-1 or 150-2 and collapsed to 215-220.

Choke was Vs NL because SA were expected to win 9/10 times. And the way they nearly choked away chasing Vs Pak until the serial choker Nawaz threw one down leg side like he always does. Esp in the latter the game was in the palm of their hands until they started throwing it away.

HERE WE GO

World Cup 2023: South Africa coach Rob Walter plays down 'chokers' tag after being knocked out in the semi-finals

South Africa coach Rob Walter has played down the ‘chokers’ tag after their exit from the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The Proteas failed to reach their maiden ODI World Cup final after suffering a three-wicket loss against Australia at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, November 16.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Walter said they did not choke against Australia as they were behind throughout the course of the game. Australia bundled South Africa for 212 runs and chased down the target with three wickets and 16 balls in hand.

“I guess you need to define what a choke is. For me, a choke is losing a game that you're in a position to win. In this instance, we were behind the eight ball right from the word go and we actually fought our way back into the competition and put up a score that gave us a chance and then again they got off to a flyer and we fought and we put ourselves back into the game,” said Walter.

He went on to say that it was a serious contest between two good teams, playing down the ‘chokers’ tag. South Africa had defeated Australia in their previous four encounters in ODIs but failed to turn up in the World Cup semi-final.

“So for me there's nothing even remotely close to a choke that happened out there today. It's a serious contest between two good teams, number two and three in the tournament. Today, I don't think anyone could watch and say it wasn't through lack of effort. I don't think anyone could say the guys didn't back themselves, they didn't back each other,” Walter added.

Walter backed skipper Temba Bavuma after his dismal performance in the semi-final, saying his leadership and presence on the field is everything. Bavuma said that he wasn’t 100 per cent fit ahead of the semi-final but played anyway. He was dismissed for a duck as South Africa posted 212 runs in the first innings.

From a batting point of view, we were confident that he would be able to go bat properly, run between wickets properly but he was sort of weighing that up with having him on the field present as the captain. And for me that trumps it every day, having his leadership and his presence on the field is everything. We spoke about it, he said I'm not 100 per cent but I can definitely play and I want to be on the park,” said Walter.

Following their win over South Africa, Australia will now face hosts India in the final in Ahmedabad on November 19.

I would still say the Saffers choked. Maybe not as obvious as the chases you mentioned.

This Kolkata pitch was tough but they were going to be well under par without Miller. They couldn't handle the heat of a big game right from ball one.

But SA also choked in other ways starting in the field with their catching and then the fast bowlers getting whooped in the powerplay after being dominant for most of the group matches. All of these things happened because they couldn't handle pressure.

No not really . Not tough enough to be 10 runs in 8 overs. There were lot of loose balls on the pads outside the leg stump. He was not whipping over long leg and square leg anymore. I am not buying every single ball they bowled were unplayable. There were scoring opportunities. But timid mentality did not allow them to do. QDK missed out on all the loose balls and eventually tried to hit a good ball and perished. This is classic choking we have seen over and over from SA. They did the same against Netherlands both in T20 and world cup

South Africa was going all guns blazing in the league stage and when it mattered the most, they did below average. I would call it a choke.
