Are we seeing a Sri Lankan resurgence?

Going by the recent performances, it seems Sri Lanka are on their way up.
They drew one test against New Zealand by not losing any wicket the entire day and were rewarded justly by rain gods on final day of the first test.

In the ODIs as well they are fighting to the core by getting very close to the target. Reaching 325+(In 1st ODI) while chasing 376 is not a mean feat and any top tier team will be proud of that effort.

Reaching 298(In 2nd ODI) while chasing 320 is again a commendable effort.

Sri Lankans need to continue with the same effort and they can be a top team again.

Nope :no

Just some individual brilliance here and there. That's about it. No consistency with the bat, ball or on the field. No consistency when it comes to selections and team planning either. Same minnow level stuff.

They are not much different to Pakistan. Dont have enough match winners (if any).

They got a lot of potential in batting but lack discipline. Their board is worse than Pakistan's.

Consistency is an issue with SL team. One performance here and one performance there by some individuals works for some matches, but team is not consistent.

Hot or miss team but they seem to be on an upswing for sure after the Eng series. They need some bowling firepower and some consistency from the batters. They have the potential to surprise a few teams in the world cup.

They have gun batsmen, but bowling is as benign as Indian bowling was once.

No absolutely not. They will probably compete and maybe beat BD and Windies but the other top 6 teams should hang their heads in shame if they lose to this Lankan team at the CWC.

Bowling is their main problem , they need to find quality bowlers. I bet though they will beat pakistan in tests and odis.

Bangladesh is ranked above Sri Lanka and the gap in points between them is twice as big as the gap between Bangladesh and Australia in the One day rankings. If Australia loses badly vs India Bangladesh might even go above them

Yeah but these are the only teams they have any chance of beating imo.

In ODIs they play the right brand of cricket adopting the modern game and their batting is certainly better than Pakistan's. It's their bowling that really lets down. The bowlers are just as bad as Wahab Riaz and a past it Gul.

Probably premature to say resurgence but I don't think SL will fall that badly as some people are making out. They won't become minnows. Obviously they will be one of the weaker teams as they are currently but they won't decline like Zimbabwe, Kenya etc. I think they need to work on a few basic problems. They lose so many wickets to run outs which is unacceptable when happening over and over again. Their fielding needs work too, but it has improved recently.

They're not going to make the Semi's of the World Cup, but I think they will probably manage to beat one of the bigger teams as on their day they are capable of beating anyone, but as some other posters have said, consistency a problem for them.

They certainly seem to be on their way up. Indications were there but now resurgence is in full swing. Winning and taking a lead against SA is difficult for even strongest of teams.
Well done Sri Lanka!

Problem with Sri Lanka is they rotate quality players soon as they have a bad tour. You got to identify your best players, stick with them in the long run to build a positive team culture. To give an example Roshen Silva, averages 48 in First Class and 40 in List A, dropped after a bad tour even after showing his quality last year. Dinesh Chandimal again dropped. These are players with a proven domestic track record so you shouldn't just discard them like that for players with no track record. Imagine if Sanga was dropped early on when he was young. Sanga himself only peaked later on in his career. For some reason Sri Lanka seems to be missing a good youth development process.

In the era of players like Sanga, Dilshan and Mahela who performed consistently, the players around them could afford to get away with being inconsistent. That luxury is unfortunately missing right now so the selectors just seem to gamble around with players without any proper investment into growing the current pool of players into maybe the next Sanga or Mahela. That in my opinion will take a good few years if they are ready to make the effort.

They are mentally strong regardless of their quality. They don't back away from a challenge. That is an important quality. They just need to identify to some world class batsmen.

Eh, this match was kinda fluke. Let's not forget they got destroyed by England at home. However SL still hasn't become minnow, their first class structure is still there but there's a lack of quality players.

They have the ingredients. They just need to settle down with a squad of 15 and not change too much.

Their batting has potential . They will always find spinners. Just need to find 2 decent pacers . Sri Lanka cricket will be fine .

Not sure about a resurgence but Sri Lanka players are very mentally tough. You have that epic performance to save the test in NZ by Matthews and Mendis and now Perera’s ATG knock. I think they will remain competitive in most places. Not consistent enough to be a top team.

Last year against England no.10 and no.11 added 58 runs against England. They were with in 40 odd runs to win that test.

Nobody should have any doubts now.
After being manhandled by Australia, they came back strongly.
Amazing turnaround.
First Asian side to win a series in SA. Congratulations to all SL fans.
