Argentina defeat France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup

USA look like quite a tidy side. Neat in possession and are clearly hungry to get the ball back when they lose it.

Wales have had a rubbish start. Can barely string two passes together.

Jon Hartson of ITV is an awful co-commentator on this game for Wales. Get him off

USA should be further ahead at half time.

Awful from Wales.

1-1 full-time between Wales and USA.

Fair result in the end, Wales with a good second half.

Stupid tackle for the penalty by the USA defender.

Wales needed the point. A loss would have meant out imo.

Argentina at 10am UK time but you have to watch Messi at a world cup.

I have a feeling he might score a hat trick.

Bale might be the most clutch and arguably one of the best British players of all time. If only England sides in the past played with the same pride, but hey we beat Iran and it’s coming home :yk3

Yep, he turns up at the big games! It would be nice to see Wales qualify to the next stage.

England letting in two goals is a concern. Imagine the Brazil , French or Argentinian forwards up against the likes of McGuire. But lets see might get an easy run again.

Whatever that I´ve watched of Wales in a few recent tournaments, they tend to be a very boring team to watch - well, for the most parts of the game, at least. A stupid foul from the USA player handed them a draw there, as otherwise, USA played far better and were ahead throughout the match.

Team news - Messi starts

Argentina v Saudi Arabia (10:00 GMT)

Kick off is approaching so here's a reminder of the team news.

Lionel Messi had spent a period training away from the Argentina squad in the build-up to this tournament, but the forward starts and captains the side in what may be the opener to his World Cup swansong. He is one of what is a fearsome front three, along with Inter Milan's Lautaro Martinez and Juventus' Angel di Maria.

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez misses out through injury and so Tottenham's Cristian Romero partners Nicolas Otamendi at the back.

Aston Villa keeper Emi Martinez starts in goal.

Argentina: Damian Martinez, Tagliafico, Romero, Otamendi, Molina, Paredes, De Paul, Messi, Di Maria, Gomez, Lautaro Martinez.

Subs: Armani, Foyth, Montiel, Pezzella, Acuna, Alvarez, Palacios, Correa, Almada, Rodriguez, Mac Allister, Dybala, Fernandez, Lisandro Martinez, Rulli.

Salem Al-Dawsari is the man to watch for Saudi Arabia. He starts on the left wing, with Saleh Al-Shehri - top scorer in the third round of AFC qualifying with four goals - is on the opposite side.

Midfielder Riyadh Sharahili misses out through injury but defender Hassan Tambakti starts having overcoming a fitness issue of his own.

Saudi Arabia: Al-Owais, Al-Bulayhi, Abdulhamid, Al-Shahrani, Tambakti, Al-Malki, Salem Al-Dawsari, Al-Shehri, Kanno, Al-Faraj, Al-Buraikan.

Subs: Al-Rubaie, Al-Ghanam, Madu, Al-Amri, Al-Burayk, Otayf, Al-Hassan, Al-Naji, Al-Abed, Bahbri, Al-

and then a disallowed goal for Argentina

Saudis done well to keep the deficit to 1 goal at HT

HALF-TIME
Argentina 1-0 Saudi Arabia

Lionel Messi's early penalty is the difference at the break, although Argentina did have three ruled out for offside, two of them very tight calls.

Saudi Arabia will be happy to keep the score so close, however. They are still in this.

Ahem!!!

Oh. My. Word!

What a match!

KSA 2 - Argentina 1

Perhaps one of the biggest shocks in World Cup Football!

Where would this rank in World Cup shocks?

Saudi Arabia are ranked 51 in the Fifa rankings. This is their 17th match at the World Cup. They’ve lost 11 of those, winning three and drawing two, conceding 39 and scoring 11. Their other wins came against Egypt in 2018 and Morocco and Belgium in 1994.

There are shocks and then there's this. Unbelievable. Argentina has to be the biggest chokers

FULL-TIME
Argentina 1-2 Saudi Arabia

All over!

A HUGE, incredible win for Saudi Arabia and one of the biggest upsets in World Cup football.

Argentina, one of the pre-tournament favourites are stunned.

What a performance, what a result.

ITV commentators have nothing but praise for KSA team.

Superb scenes! And we're only on the 1st match of day 3!

Massive respect to Saudi Arabia. Took the game to the bigger nation and were the better team

I don't think Argentina will recover from this.

This is the biggest World Cup shock I've personally ever witnessed. This tops:

Senegal beating France - 2002 WC
South Korea beating Italy - 2002 WC
Germany beating South Korea - 2018 WC

Well played Saudi and well deserved.

A bold and brilliant Saudi Arabia pulled off one of the World Cup's biggest shocks as they came from behind to stun two-time winners Argentina in a fantastic Group C opener in Lusail.

Ranked 51st in the world, Saudi Arabia could have been done and dusted in the first half as Lionel Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Argentina had three goals ruled out for offside.

But Saudi Arabia flipped the game on its head in a stunning 10-minute period after half-time, Saleh Al-Shehri levelling with a low effort and Salem Al Dawsari firing them ahead to spark pandemonium in the stands.

Having shown their ruthlessness at one end, the Green Falcons demonstrated a ruggedness at the other, holding a stellar Argentina front line at bay to secure only their fourth World Cup win in history and throw the group wide open.

Lionel Scaloni's Argentina came into the tournament among the favourites, on the back of a 36-game unbeaten run that included winning the 2021 Copa America.

They now have it all to do to keep alive their hopes of a first global triumph since 1986 and give Messi a fitting ending to what is very likely his World Cup swansong.

They face Mexico on Saturday, while Saudi Arabia take on Poland.

I think Argentina hadn't lost their previous 35 games either.

This has to be the biggest shock in WC history IMO, plus taking into all the controversy!

I don't know why, but they have massively underperformed in the world cup since Maradona's day. They get hyped to the skies before the tournament starts but always fall flat on their faces once it gets underway.

Someone should tell Argentina that they can still make it to the final through Qudrat Ka Nizaam

What an unnnnnnnnnnnbelievable result! Possibly the biggest shock that I've ever witnessed in a football match!

The great thing was that Saudi Arabia sensed an opportunity after the equaliser and kept the intensity high right from that point, not wanting to settle for a 1-1 draw. Then, after being in the lead, their defence was pretty determined, especially their goal-keeper. An incredible performance by him! They literally bled on the field to hold the score-line at 2-1.

What a performance! Mighty congratulations to them! So pleased for them!

Yeah. They didn't want to settle for a draw (something many teams probably would've done). They were positive.

They thoroughly deserved the win and I hope they will go through to Round of 16.

It will be good for the tournament if they go through. A local team with big support will keep the arabs interested and hopefully they can pack out the stadiums.

New York Times journalist Tariq Panja on BBC Radio 5 Live: "The fans are going mental. This result will go down in the history of Saudi Arabia and then some. I've just spoke to one and asked what will this result mean for these players and he said "they will get everything". That means quite a lot when you're talking about Saudi Arabia.

"The Saudis are the nearest country to the World Cup and a lot just drive over. It was three hours for one fan, 90 minutes for another fan. They've got a really big football culture, I don't think we realise that in Europe. The fandom is certainly there and it was there in full effect today. They completely drowned out the Argentina fans."

Probably the biggest shock of all time. It was almost certain before kick off argentina would win. If saudi tied argentina that would be an upset as well, the fact that they ended up winning is truly something special.

FULL-TIME
Denmark 0-0 Tunisia

It's all over. Tunisia, 30th in the world rankings, earn a brilliant point against a Denmark side 10th in the world.

Denmark will feel they should've had a penalty in injury time when the ball hit the arm of Yassine Meriah. Referee Cesar Arturo Ramos went to check the incident on a pitchside monitor.

Normally we've come to expect that the decision will be changed, but he stuck with his original decision, said 'no penalty' and it's a point apiece.

Denmark were held to a draw by Tunisia in their World Cup opener in a raucous atmosphere at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan.

Despite fielding many Premier League regulars, the much-fancied Danes were given a tough workout in Group D.

Both sides had goals ruled out for offside, while Denmark's Andreas Cornelius somehow missed from a yard.

There was 95th-minute drama when referee Cesar Ramos checked the pitchside monitor over a potential Denmark penalty for handball, only to stick with his original decision and award a goal-kick.

One of the pre-tournament favourites, Denmark will need to find some form if they are to qualify from a group that also includes World Cup holders France.

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez has not quite returned to full fitness so starts on the bench for Mexico.

Experienced goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, 37, is winning his 132nd international cap and captains the side.

The dangerous Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano of Napoli starts up top.

Mexico XI: Ochoa, Sanchez, Montes, Moreno, Alvarez, Gallardo, Herrera, Chavez, Vega, Lozano, Martin.

Aston Villa full-back Matty Cash - born in Slough - starts for Poland in his first World Cup game.

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski is the main man up front, captaining the side and searching for his first goal in the competition.

Centre-back Kamil Glik wins his 100th cap, former West Brom loanee Grzegorz Krychowiak starts in midfield and ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is in between the sticks

Poland XI: Szczesny, Cash, Kiwior, Glik, Berezynski, Krychowiak, Kaminski, Zalewski, Zielinski, Szymanski, Lewandowski.

The Saudi defence was like a wall! Amazing.

Fantastic atmosphere as well.

Argentina and Messi hype looking a bit silly now. Awful. They might recover and come back in the tournament but this was embarrassing!

Stunned
Kudos to KSA really took a leaf out of Mourinho book and defended and defended and defended
Messi:)))

Loved the Saudi high defensive line to get their goals against Argentina. Very brave and went for the win. Then defended like lions! :)

Mexico v Poland 0-0 after an hour

Lively but goalless (so far)

MISSED PENALTY

You'd think Mexico have just won the World Cup already - the noise is unbelievable.

A fantastic save by the keeper and Lewandowski is still without a goal at a World Cup - you just couldn't write this.

The keeper has done his homework but it's quite a poor penalty for a man of his standing.

Hopefully this gets Mexico to change gear a little bit and go after it.

I am not sure why people are acting as if Tunisia got an upset draw vs Denmark

Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria have often been very solid sides and very rarely have teams beaten them easily in the world cup

Agree. Tunisia played well.

Denmark have been overhyped. Same as quite a few teams

Fun fact about Mexico
They are the only team apart from brazil to always qualify from the group stages every single world cup they have played since 1986

Fun fact about Mexico

Mexico has not been able to get past round of 16 since 1994

From 1994 to 2018, mexico has always been eliminated in round of 16.

Thats 7 worlds cup in a row of getting eliminated in round of 16

Mexico 0 Poland 0.

Not the best of games.

The result leaves Argentina bottom of the group.

This is correct, I also have the same perception about them.
