Argentina defeat France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Disastrous start for France.

Hernandez injured and 1-0 down to Australia.

Surely not another shock today.

That Mexico-Poland draw was a good news for Saudi Arabia. That means they are probably through if they can win one more game.

Aussies are playing positively. France look sluggish.

1-0 to Australia after 23 minutes.

Hopefully the defending champions curse doesn't strike France. As I type they have equalized.

Lovely equaliser by France.

Great ball in that by Hernandez.

Mbappe looking very sharp so far.

Good half of football that.

Australia started well but France played some excellent football once they equalised.

France great going forward but shaky at the back.

The Socceroos getting the beating of their lifetime, Giroud strikes again, France leads 4-1.

Messi's a bottler....scraped a behind closed doors Copa which Alexis Sanchez won twice in consecutive years versus Argentina

Fun fact about Mexico
They are the only team apart from brazil to always qualify from the group stages every single world cup they have played since 1986

And always vow out in Last 16. Also-rans

Tunisia -Denmark was game of the day

4-1 to France.

Different class and just in 2nd gear really through the game.

Even with so many players missing, this France side look really strong.

Mexicans start with full energy and then run out of steam by the 2nd round

But they tend to get beaten by top sides like Holland, Brazil or Argentina. Mid range Euro sides find it very hard to beat them apart from the odd exception like Sweden in 2018

Wow! What a matchday it has been with the biggest upset in world cup history.

Just glad the Saudi defender seems okay after getting knocked out stone cold, that was a horrific collision with his keeper.

Not many will remember but Saudi Arabia were 5 minutes away in 1994 World cup from a huge upset leading 1-0 vs Holland. Dutch back then had Bergkamp, Seedorf, De Boers, Jonk and were very solid. Only 2 last ditch goals saved them
(Dutch get very last minute good luck vs smaller teams, Mexico in 2018, Senegal yesterday and Saudi back in 1994)

Agree really good games, even the 0-0 between Denmark and Tunisia was a good watch.

This World Cup could even surpass Russia 2018 as the best ever!

And Brazil havent even played yet. :pele

Said Al Owairan scored the goal of the tournament against Belgium for Saudi!

But this year their team is much better, they could do a Cameroon of 1990 and reach the Quarters.

Saudi Arabia defender Ali Al-Bulayhi slapped Lionel Messi on the back and told him ‘You will not win’ after his side went 2-1 ahead against Argentina during their incredible victory.

Saudi pulled off one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history after beating much-fancied Argentina on Tuesday morning.

Messi had put Scaloni’s side ahead from the penalty spot after just 10 minutes and threatened to ease to a comfortable victory.

They also had three goals disallowed during the first half with Messi and a potential brace from Lautaro Martinez being chalked off for offside.

And the underdogs bit back in the second half.

Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari scored within five minutes of each other to give Saudi a 2-1 lead shortly after the resumption.

Incredible.

Saudi’s tails were up and they wanted to let Argentina know they meant business.

Well, Al-Bulayhi did anyway.

He then mutters a few words to the Paris Saint-Germain star, leaving Messi looking rather shocked. His Argentine teammates then come to his rescue.

What was being said?

Well, after the match, Al-Bulayhi was asked what he said to arguably the greatest player of all time to which he replied: “I told him: you will not win, you will not win!”

Considering there were still 35 minutes – and the lengthy injury-time – still to play, that was very brave of Al-Bulayhi.

But he was spot on, wasn’t he?

After the shock defeat, Messi admitted there are no excuses for Argentina.

We knew that (Saudi) Arabia is a team with good players, that moves the ball well and that advances the line a lot. We work on it, but we speed up a bit.

“There are no excuses. We are going to be more united than ever. This group is strong and they have shown it.

“It is a situation that we did not have to go through in a long time. Now we have to show that this is a real group.

“It’s a very hard blow for everyone, we didn’t expect to start like this. Things happen for a reason. We have to prepare for what’s coming, we have to win or win and it depends on us.

“We have to go back to the base of who we are. We have to think about what’s to come.”

When I jog back mentally at the last 8 or 9 world cups, I dont recall Argentina ever playing vs an Arab side.

They played only once against a Middle eastern team which was Iran in 2014, and almost lost after Iran wasted 2 great chances and won only because of a Messi winner in injury time
Yet they have a good record vs Sub Saharan African teams (except the 1990 loss to Cameroon)
So maybe Middle Eastern teams are Argentinas achilles heels?

Spain v Costa Rica today. I think they'll win the tournament and they're confident in themselves

World Cup 2022: Why is there so much stoppage time being added on?

We are only a few games into this World Cup and already we are seeing a theme developing:

Stoppage time. And lots of it.

The five games so far have had about 85 minutes added on between them, with England's match against Iran lasting an incredible 117 minutes and 16 seconds.

That was partly down to injury - Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand suffered concussion after a nasty clash of heads early on. But it is also part of a concerted effort by Fifa to clamp down on time-wasting by more accurately monitoring the amount of time the game is stopped.

The trend continued with Tuesday's first game, as Saudi Arabia's shock win over Argentina clocked seven minutes of first-half stoppage time time, plus almost 14 minutes added at the end of the second half.

Reasons the game is halted include injuries, video assistant referee decisions, substitutions, penalties and red cards, with some players often deliberately delaying the restart after such incidents in order to wind down the clock.

Chairman of Fifa's referees committee Pierluigi Collina confirmed last week that fourth officials had been instructed to keep track of time lost during the game during the tournament in Qatar, something they had also tried to do at the previous World Cup in Russia in 2018.

"In Russia, we tried to be more accurate in compensating for time lost during games and that's why you saw six, seven or even eight minutes added on," he told reporters at a pre-tournament briefing.

"Think about it: if you have three goals in a half, you'll probably lose four or five minutes in total to celebrations and the restart."

The result of this new approach was a number of records being broken.

According to Opta the five single halves with the most stoppage time in a single World Cup match since records began in 1966 were all on Monday and Tuesday:

England v Iran first half (13.59 minutes)
Argentina v Saudi Arabia second half (13.53)
England v Iran second half (13:05)
USA v Wales second half (10:32)
Senegal v Netherlands second half (10:03)
Unsurprisingly, all that added time led to some VERY late goals.

Mehdi Taremi's penalty for Iran against England came with 102:30 on the clock, the latest World Cup goal on record excluding extra time.

That was swiftly followed by the second latest, with Davy Klaassen's strike for the Netherlands coming after 98 minutes and 17 seconds.

The approach has certainly caused a stir on social media, with some fans praising Fifa's attempts to clamp down on time-wasting but others feeling it is leading to unnecessarily long games.

Either way, it should make you think twice if you ever consider leaving a match early again. You don't know how much action you will miss.

“The Argentine national team remained wrapped up in a sandstorm and the horizon clouded over,” said the headline published by newspaper La Nacion. “It was a strange taste because for more than three years they did not know what it was to lose."

Newspaper Clarin described the defeat as a “nightmare for Messi” and a “historic surprise”.

Even outside of Argentina, media outlets described the defeat as “historic”: “Saudi Arabia and its fan base shake Argentina in a historic surprise” said Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo. Spanish newspaper El Pais also noted that Saudi Arabia “surprised” Argentina.

Argentina “was wrapped up in the spiderweb of Saudi Arabia”, said another headline.

On Twitter, the Argentine national team conveyed a more hopeful message, or at least a more forward-looking message. “We have to return to the base of what we are. We must think about what is coming,” said Messi.

PakPassion Predictions Competition: FIFA World Cup 2022

Still can´t believe what Saudi Arabia did yesterday to Argentina. Wow!

France didn´t panic after that first goal by Australia. They kept attacking and reaped the reward for it in the end. Played like true favourites.

Tunisia put up a highly spirited fight to secure a well earned draw against Denmark earlier in the day. That too was bit of a surprising result, I would think.

Lewandoski must be kicking himself for that missed penalty. If he had put that in, it should´ve been an easy win for the taking. Well done to the Mexican goal-keeper, though.
-----
daytrader an interesting read about the stoppage time. I too wondered as to why they´ve been giving so many minutes after the full-time. What that means, though, is that we might see surprises and late goals even more now, given the length of the additional time. Not bad, I suppose.

Croatia, runners-up four years ago, started their World Cup campaign with a goalless draw against a well-drilled Morocco at Al Bayt Stadium.

Only four players from their final defeat by France in 2018 started this game and they lacked an attacking spark throughout, but came closest through Nikola Vlasic's toe-poked effort.

Morocco were impressive, but failed to create clear-cut opportunities.

Belgium play Canada in the other Group F game at 19:00 GMT on Wednesday.

Croatia, who are 12th in Fifa's world rankings, dominated possession as expected, but they were unable to create opportunities or break down Morocco, who have only lost two of their past 40 games across three years.

The best chance of a match that had only two shots on target from each side came in first-half stoppage time, when a left-wing cross was diverted towards goal by Vlasic, but the midfielder on loan at Torino from West Ham was denied by the right leg of Yassine Bounou, who spread himself to close down the angle.

Morocco, who are ranked 22nd, came closest when Noussair Mazraoui followed in a deflected shot and saw a back-post header saved.

Paris St-Germain full-back Achraf Hakimi also tested Dominik Livakovic, but the Croatia keeper dealt with his dipping, swerving 35-yard strike with ease.

It was a game largely played in the middle third of the pitch, with both sides potentially wary of losing and damaging their chances of progressing to the knockout stages from a group that also contains Belgium and Canada.

The goalless draw is the third of this World Cup, after Denmark's opener against Tunisia and Poland v Mexico on Tuesday. There was only one in the entire 2018 tournament in Russia.

Croatia will play Canada in their next match on Sunday (16:00 GMT kick-off), while Morocco face Belgium on the same day (13:00).

Croatia went pretty flat there. A disappointing show from them. Morocco would gladly take the draw, of course.

Over to Germany now. Let's see what they've got to offer against Japan.

Team news - Havertz and Musiala start
Germany v Japan (13:00 GMT)

Emma Sanders

BBC Sport at Khalifa International Stadium

The Germany team is full of superstars.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer captains the team in their World Cup opener, while Real Madrid's Antonio Rudiger lines up at centre-back.

Chelsea's Kai Havertz and Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan also start, alongside exciting Bayern Munich teenager Jamal Musiala.

The likes of Julian Brandt, Mario Gotze and Leroy Sane are on the bench.

Germany XI: Neuer, Rudiger, Raum, Kimmich, Havertz, Gnabry, Muller, Musiala, Suele, Gundogan, Schlotterbeck.

Japan have got some talented players too.

Schalke centre-back Maya Yoshida captains the side against familiar German opposition.

He is one of five players in the Japan starting XI who are currently playing their football in the German Bundesliga.

Celtic forward Daizen Maeda starts but Brighton's Kaoru Mitoma and former Liverpool midfielder Takumi Minamino are on the bench.

Japan XI: Gonda, Itakura, Nagatomo, Endo, Kubo, Ito, Kamada, Tanaka, Sakai, Yoshia, Maeda.

HALF-TIME
Germany 1-0 Japan

And there goes the half-time whistle.

Japan started well but a lapse in concentration from Shuichi Gonda gifted Germany a penalty, who improved as the half went on.

and he wasnt even the best player of that team. it was Majed Abdallah that we had hopes from. I know my old man raving on and on and on abut how amazing Majed Abdallah was.

Btw that goal is not just the goal of the tournament, I think it is in the top 10 of international goals, as good as Maradona's 86 goal going past Hoddles and Co

That should be the spirit, regardless of whether you win or not. Can anyone imagine if Pak team player says that and the amount of criticism it would get. One should read the saudi forums (it is in Arabic of course, and google does a **** poor job of translation, as what is wirtten on there is miles away from what google translates but even then you will see that the level of criticism isn't any where near to what is seen by Pak fans)

Ma sha Allah.

All the best to them. May they go far in this tournament.

Japan!

They are leading 2-1 against Germans.

Looks like Germans are losing this one.

Germans are busy politicizing the event instead of focusing on football.

Japan have won. Good stuff.

Glad that Germany lost. They can carry on with their "protest".

Massive respect for this Japan team! What a win! Congratulations to them on an amazing performance!

Germany's only goal came off a penalty, otherwise the score-line too would've reflected an even worse display. A lot to prove and improve for this team. The road ahead is only going to get tougher with a match to go against Spain as well.

That comeback was stunning! Totally pathetic defending from Germany, what a WC this is so far.

FULL-TIME - Germany 1-2 Japan
JAPAN HAVE DONE IT!!

It is another shock at this World Cup as Japan come from behind to beat four-time world champions for the first time in their history!

==

A stunning late comeback from Japan saw four-time winners Germany fall to a shock defeat in their opening World Cup game in Qatar.

Germany dominated a frenetic match for large spells but failed to capitalise on their pressure - before Japan caused the Khalifa International Stadium to erupt into a mix of mixed celebration and surprise.

Substitute Takuma Asano squeezed in a thumping strike from a tight angle to make it 2-1 to Japan and ran over to the photographers in the corner of the stadium in sheer delight.

There was a collective pause in the arena as the ball rolled down from the roof of the net before supporters realised it had gone in.

Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan had given Germany the lead from the penalty spot in the first half, before Japan substitute Ritsu Doan equalised in the 75th minute.

The equaliser came after a string of stunning saves at each end - Japan's Shuichi Gonda pulling off a double stop to deny Serge Gnabry and Jonas Hofmann, before Germany's Manuel Neuer got his fingertips to Junya Ito's effort.

Germany, who finished bottom of their group in Russia in 2018, had missed several chances to extend their lead when the score was 1-0.

They face stiff opposition in Group E with 2010 winners Spain to come on Sunday, then a final group game against Costa Rica.

Before kick-off, Germany's players put their hands over their mouths during a team photo and in the stands a German government minister, Nancy Faeser, wore the OneLove armband.

It comes after news the German football federation is investigating whether it is legal for Fifa to threaten players with sanction for wearing the OneLove armband in Qatar.

The Germany team later tweeted that human rights are "non-negotiable" and "we stand by our position".

BBC

Japan indeed plays beautiful football , if you follow this team past 5-8 years I would say they always had potential but just always came up short.

They tend to had issues in the past with goalkeeping and finishing, today seemed to be a different case.

One thing I loved about todays game, the way Japan came out the second half, they just looked like a different team all together. Regardless an amazing result.

Germanys last world cup game was a 2-0 loss to Korea, seems like they have it bad vs Asian sides :)

All sides which indulged in political stuff are losing, be it Germany or Iran whose fans let their anthem be booed in a foreign nation

Argentina and Germany both losing their opening games is genuinely hilarious.

Hope they both lose their second games as well and go out. Early flight home!

Japan were very close to beating Belgium in 2018 losing to 2 last ditch goals.
They are a solid side and looked as they have improved since then

Spain piling up the goal difference/mountain to climb for Germany

Goal difference wont do Germany any benefit, as long as they dont beat Spain and Japan beats Costa Rica they are out in the 1st round

Japan should beat Costa Rica, they look tired already lol

Bye Germany , next time concentrate on football not virtue signalling. 🤭

So the Kashima Antlers have thrashed Bayern Munichers what a surprise, Germany lacks the steel and characters they are famous for over the years

Kahn Ballack, Klose, Asamoah, Kuranyi, Kheidira, Lahm, Kronos, Ozil, Podolski

Yeah they look awful. France and Spain teams to beat I reckon.

Very close WC so far Costa Rica are playing so bad looks disinterested

France is the best team of all matches played some of their moves were PlayStation stuff, still initial stage

This has got to be one of the worst German sides ever. No spine or grit, and too easy to score against. They’ll lose to Spain and go out.

France, Spain and England look the best European teams so far.

I agree, although France and England let their opponents in a couple of times despite scoring a hatful of goals. Both sides look to have some weaknesses in defence.

Spain have absolutely marmalised Costa Rica.
Best team so far.

FULL-TIME
Spain 7-0 Costa Rica

And that's that.

Spain were absolutely amazing. Costa Rica, rather sadly, looking completely out of their depth.

The goals came from Dani Olmo (11 mins), Marco Asensio (21 mins), Ferran Torres (31 and 54 mins), Gavi (74 mins), Carlos Soler (90 mins) and Alvaro Morata (92 mins).

==

Gavi announced himself on the global stage with a brilliant volley as Spain produced a sparkling passing performance to outclass Costa Rica and start their World Cup in sensational style.

Ferran Torres scored twice in what was a stroll from start to finish for the 2010 champions but the pick of their seven goals was Gavi's outstanding volleyed finish, with the Barcelona teenager using the outside of his foot to steer a dropping ball home via the post.

This has been a tournament full of surprises, with Spain's Group E rivals Germany the latest victims with their late defeat by Japan earlier on Wednesday, but there was never a hint of another shock happening here.

La Roja were completely dominant from the start, with Costa Rica unable to live with their pace, movement and precision when they came forward.

The Euro 2020 semi-finalists went close twice in the first 10 minutes, with Dani Olmo and Marco Asensio both firing wide, but they did not have to wait long to take the lead.

Olmo had work to do to when he met Gavi's delicate chipped pass into the area, but he used his strength to hold off Oscar Duarte then span into space to expertly slot past the onrushing Keylor Navas.

It was an ominous start for Costa Rica and things quickly got worse for the 2014 quarter-finalists, who were the last team to qualify for Qatar.

Again Spain advanced up the middle of the pitch unopposed, before the ball was spread left to Jordi Alba and his driven cross was met powerfully by Asensio - although Navas should have done far better with his attempted save.

Victory was sealed just after the half-hour mark, when Torres sent Navas the wrong way from the spot after Duarte had hacked at Alba in the box.

But there was more misery to come for Costa Rica after the break, with Spain still hungry for goals.

Torres capitalised on more poor defending to make it 4-0, collecting a loose ball after bursting into the box and then calmly firing home.

Gavi's superb strike added gloss to an already glittering display, with the 18-year-old finding a finish to match his impressive performance after meeting a cross from substitute Alvaro Morata.

Another substitute, Carlos Soler, made it six after Navas failed to deal with a cross, and Morata rounded off the scoring in injury time after playing a one-two with Olmo.

Sometimes difficult to tell in these sorts of games whether Spain really are that good or if Costa Rica are just out of their depth and totally awful. Spain scored some great goals no doubt.

Canada will play there opening game vs Belgium

This is very big for Canada, last time we qualified for the world cup was 1986 (it was our first time qualifying) however Canada had lost all there 3 matches and did not score a single goal.

Regardless of what happens we are proud to see Canada playing in the world cup again :)

Best of Luck Team Canada.

Spain have so far looked to be the most efficient and clinical of all the teams, in my opinion. Scored some such beautiful goals. They've sent a strong message to all other favourite teams in the tournament.

Germany are in trouble already!

Belgium is favorites, but people shouldn't underestimate Canadas team, they got some talent and play fast paced game, that being said Belgium are clear favorites but like you said we never know :D :)

Spain looked very slick against Costa Rica.

Passed the ball around beautifully and cut through the opposition at will.

Tougher tests to come though for Spain.
