Argentina defeat France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup

2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar: Matchday & Tournament Thread

So looking forward to seeing Brazil today in just a little more than half an hour's time. I hope that they go a long way in the tournament this time around.

And wasn´t it worth the wait?! They were very disappointing in the first half but seriously turned it on in the second half. They were flawless and a pure joy to watch! That second goal is easily the goal of the tournament so far, easily. I remember scoring such goals in video games back in my childhood:)). Scintillating and spectacular to watch.

It´ll stay with me forever what the German commentator on ZDF said the moment the goal was scored. "Das ist Brasilien, und das ist Kunst! (this is Brazil, and this is art!)" Those words are still fresh in my memory. The German experts and analysts in general were full of praise for the team.

Team news - Hosseini replaces Beiranvand for Iran

Wales v Iran (10:00 GMT)

The Iran team news is in as well. Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand misses out after getting concussed and breaking his nose against England, so Hossein Hosseini comes in.

There are also a couple of tactical changes, with Sadegh Moharrami and Sardar Azmoun recalled to a more attacking line-up, with Iran opting to start with two forwards.

Iran: Hosseini, Hajsafi, Mohammadi, Ezatolahi, Pouraliganji, Taremi, Gholizadeh, Hosseini, Azmoun, Nourollahi, Rezaeian.

HALF-TIME - Wales 0-0 Iran
Wales fail to clear and Ali Gholizadeh's long-range shot dips in front of Wayne Hennessey, but he gathers.

And that's half-time.

It's very, very tense.

A draw doesn't suit either side.

FULL-TIME
Wales 0-2 Iran

All over.

Iran snatch the victory in the last moments of stoppage time, but they utterly deserved it.

Wales, gutted.

Wales' first World Cup for 64 years looks set to end at the first hurdle after they suffered a heartbreaking - but deserved - last-ditch defeat against Iran in Qatar.

Substitute Rouzbeh Cheshmi struck from 20 yards deep into added time, before Ramin Rezaeian finished off a counter-attack to seal victory for a revitalised Iran side who have renewed hope of reaching the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

As they did in their opening draw with the United States, Wales started poorly and had VAR to thank for disallowing a goal from Iran's Ali Gholizadeh for offside.

In one of the most highly-charged atmospheres of this World Cup, Iran's players sang their anthem this time - having refused to do so before their opening loss to England in an apparent show of support for anti-government protests in their country - but their own fans booed the anthem and some could be seen crying in the stands.

Roared on by the fervent and almost entirely Iranian crowd, Carlos Queiroz's side were extremely unlucky not to score early in the second half as Sardar Azmoun and Gholizadeh both struck the post within the space of a few seconds.

Wales were utterly ragged and, as they pushed forward in search of the late winning goal they desperately needed, a long ball over the top left the defence exposed and their onrushing goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was sent off - after a VAR check - for a reckless challenge on Mehdi Taremi.

That set the seal on Wales' fate for this match and, in all likelihood, their hopes of reaching the second round.

While Robert Page's men were just as disjointed as they were against the USA, Iran were unrecognisable from the team thrashed 6-2 by England in their first match and fully deserved this win which breathes new life into their ambitions of progressing to the last 16.

Wales now face the formidable challenge of needing to win their final group match on Tuesday against England, who take on the United States later on Friday.

It is not impossible but, based on how the Group B teams have fared so far in Qatar, Wales' first World Cup for 64 years looks like it is in serious danger of ending at the earliest stage.

Having been absent from World Cups since 1958, Wales marked their emotional and long-awaited return to football's grandest stage with a 1-1 draw against the United States at the same stadium on Monday.

They seemed overawed by the magnitude of that occasion during a first half in which they were overrun and outplayed by the USA, but were much improved after the half-time introduction of Kieffer Moore.

The Bournemouth striker started this time and, while his presence gave Wales an added dimension in attack, they were still as worryingly porous in midfield as they had been against the States.

Iran sensed that weakness and pressed their opponents high up the pitch, prompting panic among Welsh midfielders and defenders, particularly on the break.

Despite their vulnerability through the middle, where Page had stuck with the same selection, Wales looked more dangerous when they played with width, and it was Moore who stood to benefit.

Connor Roberts found the 6ft 5in forward with a fine cross from the right in the 13th minute and, although Moore stretched to connect with a volley, it was straight at goalkeeper Hossein Hosseini.

Roberts' next involvement three minutes later was less distinguished as his cross-field pass was cut out near his own penalty area and allowed Sardar Azmoun to tee up Gholizadeh to finish into an empty net. There was no flag at first but, after a swift VAR check, the goal was disallowed for offside.

Azmoun himself headed the next chance over as Wales struggled to get a hold of the game. Fortunately for them, as energetic and well-drilled as Iran were, they did not create much in the way of genuine scoring opportunities.

Iran!!!!!! What a win! They were throughout the better team on display and fully deserved the win. In fact, they were playing so well that it was making me sad towards the closing stages of the match that Iran hadn't scored a goal, but then the game turned on its head.

Iran maintained great intensity throughout and kept creating chances. So pleased for them!

So happy for Iran.

Maybe if rainbow loving Wales had spend more time focusing on football and less on promoting the lgbtq agenda, they might have won.

What a big match now against USA on Tuesday evening

So many permutations!. What an incredible match that'll be.

Poor Qatar despite all their mercenaries are so poor. Shame because the Arab World TM needed this event and it's hardly been a failure.

Middle Eastern teams doing excellently

It's an absolute disaster for Qatar and defender Boualem Khoukhi.
Without threatening, the hosts had kept Senegal at bay but now they have a real task on their hands.
Plenty of fans are already heading down the exits, going for Maghrib prayers or heading home early again?

HALF-TIME
Qatar 0-1 Senegal

Not exactly a game that will ever be used as an advert for the beautiful game but Senegal doing just enough at the break.

Got to feel happy for Iran, they seem to be in the news for all the wrong reasons. Good for the footballers to get some credit for their football for a change rather than have to field political questions day in day out.

Empty seats at a home WC Game lol. Only in Qatar

??

They are in their traditional white attire so to you it seems like empty stands :)) but it's a packed stadium. They ll start leaving once 10-15 mins are remaining if Qatar doesn't score a goal

Qatar should've gotten a penalty. Referee didn't give it.

Good to see Iran beat Wales.

FULL-TIME
Qatar 1-3 Senegal

Senegal become the first African team to win a game at this World Cup. Qatar will exit the competition if the Netherlands avoid defeat against Ecuador at 16:00 GMT.

And Qatar become the first team to have exited the team! Very poor from the hosts. Expected better from the Asian champions.

I had to correct my brother too on this. He too thought that the stands are empty! :))

The fact that Qatar have been so poor in this tournament will give further ammunition to the critics of this World Cup to attack Qatar.

I expected a better performance from the hosts.

Senegal are a decent team to be fair. Qatar might be hosts, but they are still very much a minnow team.

im always surprised when i see minnow footie fans look like there in absolute shock when their national teams loses, is it a lack of international comp leading ppl to think their teams are actually any good?

also have a cheeky little 4/1 on braz pre tournament so was very happy to see that performance yesterday. even during a poor first half serbia couldn't really get a look in.

vinicius looked so good, richarlsons finish was epic, but that outside foot pinged pass was ballsy and spot on.

Only a handful of western countries are attacking Qatar. Rest of the world either have no comment or are praising Qatar.

Qatar are on the verge of a group-stage exit in their home World Cup after Senegal condemned them to a second straight loss.

The Middle East side battled valiantly but will be out with a game to spare if the Netherlands avoid defeat against Ecuador later on Friday (16:00 GMT kick-off).

But African champions Senegal are up and running.

Boulaye Dia broke the deadlock four minutes before half-time, slamming home to punish Boualem Khoukhi's miscued clearance.

Looking to hit back in the second period, Qatar's hopes were dashed when former Bristol City striker Famara Diedhiou rose to flick in a glorious header just three minutes after the break.

Watford's Ismaila Sarr had an early chance on his 50th cap but struck into the side netting, while Idrissa Gueye of Everton's rasping drive went narrowly wide.

Qatar felt they should have had a first-half penalty when Akram Afif was bundled over in the box by Sarr, but referee Antonio Lahoz pointed only for a goal-kick, much to the anger of the home supporters.

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy made stunning reflex saves to deny Almoez Ali and Ismail Mohamad, but he could do nothing about Mohammed Muntari's powerful header.

Qatar were searching for the equaliser, but Bamba Dieng stroked in to deflate the home following and leave their team bottom of the group without a point after two games played.

Disappointment for hosts

Qatar made history by becoming the first country from this region to host the World Cup, but are now staring at the unwanted record of becoming just the second home team to exit the competition at the group stage, after South Africa in 2010.

They need a huge favour from Ecuador, who beat them in the opening game, to salvage any hope of remaining in the tournament.

Felix Sanchez's men, who did not have a shot on target on their World Cup debut, were backed by a raucous section of supporters behind the goal.

Other men and women dressed in traditional attire filled the stadium at the start of their weekend, but went home disappointed as their side suffered back-to-back defeats.

Senegal's class told with their starting XI featuring 10 players who feature in Europe's top-five leagues, with the exception being Sarr of Watford.

But the story could have been very different had the referee pointed to the spot for Sarr's challenge on Afif, but he left the locals outraged by failing to award a penalty.

It proved crucial as Khoukhi's scuffed clearance allowed Dia to convert the opener, and Diedhiou's unstoppable header double the advantage on 48 minutes.

Qatar, though, showed good fight to hit back via Muntari's thunderous header, which sent the partisan crowd into raptures.

But any optimism for an equaliser was killed when Dieng finished off a swift move to seal Senegal's first victory in the group.

The Qatar players were applauded by their fans at the final whistle, but some hit the deck in regret knowing their prospects of reaching the knockout stage are all but over.

Netherlands look a strong side, wouldn't be surprised if they go deep into the tournament.

Wow what performance by Brazil yesterday stunning the abundance of forwards bought back memories of Brazil sides of 90s

Neymar Vicinus Richarlison Jesus Anthony Rodrygo
90s~
Ronaldo Rivaldo Leonardo Bebeto Denilson Edmundo Romario

Netherlands have a very balanced team, and have a good and experienced manager in Van Gaal. I think they have a decent chance of winning the World Cup.

1-1
The Dutch lack that sheer class in midfield which was their forte over the years Cocu Seedorf Sneijder

It is in the interest of both teams Netherlands and Ecuador to settle for a draw now and qualify for the next stage.

Enner Valencia off the field for Ecuador, a big blow if he is out. He is the leading goal scorer so far in the tournament.

Great effort from Ecuador to draw with Netherlands.

The Senegal v Ecuador match looks like it will a knockout match to see who qualifies with Netherlands.

Qatar are out of the tournament now.

Senegal must win to go through.

Ecuador only need a draw.

A pathetic and very sluggish effort in that match from Netherlands with an xG of 0.07. Very lucky to get away with the draw against an enterprising Ecuador side, who could have won it.

So happy for Iran.

Maybe if rainbow loving Wales had spend more time focusing on football and less on promoting the lgbtq agenda, they might have won.

Iran beat Wales because Iran were the better team and played the more positive football.

Some of these broken record one liners about LGBTQ / protests etc being “the reason why teams lost” isn’t particularly witty or clever anymore, so you might want to find some new material.

Richarlison’s scissor kick last night was fabulous.

Early goal of the tournament contender.

What an incredible World Cup!

The stadiums are the best in history, the playing surface is incredible, the footballs produced in Pakistan are the best ever too.

Unlucky Qatar, played a very good 2nd half. They are out but should be proud of their performance today. Next time they will be better.

I watched the full Saudi match, amazing display.

This half time team talk by the Saudi manager, made them believe they are Brazil! lol Must watch.

I personally want to see Brazil vs Argentina in the final. That would be a classic and befitting final.

If Argentina finish second, they are likely to face France in Round of 16. If they somehow beat them, they can maybe go to final.

Brazil should make it to final from the other end.

That was a really spirited fightback by Ecuador. It was immense fun watching them play with that passion. Actually deserved to win the match. The Netherlands were flat for most of the game, I felt.

England V USA

I really didnt want to support England for their idiotic hypocritical behaviour but since its against the Yanks....smash them 3 Lions"!

My prediction 3-1 to England :wg

Hopefully Iran will go through and will knock out USA and Wales.

England will hopefully be knocked out in Round of 16 or quarterfinal.

England will likely face Senegal or Ecuador in the Round of 16. I can't see how Senegal or Ecuador can beat them.

I think 3-1 for this one sounds about right.

A goal somewhere from USA but England too streetwise across the 90 minutes.

Group A has looked quite solid apart from Qatar. I think these would be tough opponents for England.

England need to start fast as USA players are very fit & can run for 90 mins at high pace.

If England do go behind it could be tough but yep easy win should be the case.

Enner Valencia scored his third goal of the World Cup before being taken off on a stretcher as Ecuador drew with the Netherlands to leave Group A wide open.

PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo had given the Netherlands the lead after just five minutes and four seconds - the quickest goal so far in Qatar - when he struck a shot beautifully into the top of the net.

But the Dutch struggled to build on their lead, with Ecuador's Pervis Estupinan having a goal disallowed on the stroke of half-time.

Ecuador fans were bouncing with excitement throughout the second half at the Khalifa International Stadium as they equalised just after the break and continued to create chances against a rattled Netherlands side.

The entire Ecuador squad ran over to the corner flag to celebrate with Valencia after he poked in the rebound from Estupinan's parried shot in the 49th minute - and Gonzalo Plata hit the crossbar with a long-range effort shortly after.

Captain Valencia, who scored both goals in Ecuador's victory over hosts Qatar on the opening night of the World Cup, was a constant threat but his night was cut short due to injury.

The former West Ham and Everton striker went down in the final minute of normal time and was taken off on a stretcher, but was seen hobbling to his seat in the dugout.

The result means three teams from Group A will be battling it out for a place in the last 16 in the final group match - the Netherlands, Ecuador and Senegal - with all three capable of going through as table leaders.

With the Netherlands heavy favourites going into their final group game against bottom side Qatar, all eyes will be on a showdown between Ecuador and Senegal, which will dictate the table order.

Gakpo's opener was the first goal Ecuador had conceded in 701 minutes across all competitions - and a first since March - but the Netherlands struggled to create much as the game wore on.

Estupinan was left frustrated at half-time, with several of his team-mates remaining on the pitch to chat to the officials after his goal was ruled out when team-mate Jackson Porozo was offside and obstructing the view of the goalkeeper.

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal brought on Memphis Depay at half-time - a planned move as the Barcelona forward continues his return to fitness following injury - but it made little difference as Ecuador were unlucky not to pick up all three points.

Ecuador leader steps up again but at what cost?
The celebrations at full-time were subdued from Ecuador fans after a deserved point against strong opposition.

Valencia, who had an aura about him all evening and had the crowd on their feet on numerous occasions, has scored all three of Ecuador's goals so far at the tournament and they will need him on Tuesday for their crucial group decider with Senegal.

His injury in the final moments of the game will cause concern for Ecuador boss Gustavo Alfaro but otherwise it was a good evening for his side.

They will be frustrated not to come away with more having had 14 shots in total - including four on target - and limiting the Netherlands to just the one, which was Gakpo's early opener.

Gakpo was on the scoresheet again having scored in the victory over Senegal, only enhancing his reputation in Qatar, but he failed to have an impact on the game afterwards.

The Netherlands have looked ropey in both of their group matches so far but are still in with a strong chance of progressing as group winners.

England have a habit of losing to lower-tiered teams often. I remember they lost to Iceland in 2016 Euro. Also, lost to Croatia last World Cup.

England are overated team. They have been lucky in groups because they play a lot of friendlies, therefore have a high ranking.

USA can win this one imo.

That Mario Mandzukic goal broke English hearts, but Croatia is not a lower tiered team. They always punch above their weight.

USA by far the better team so far.

England can only get better.

Foden should be on soon.
